Abstract:Modification on the surface topology of rice husk fiber using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution was evaluated as an approach to enhance the interfacial adhesion between melamine formaldehyde and rice husk fibers. The fiber property changes were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results showed that PVA was absorbed into the fiber and formed a ductile layer outside the fiber. The mechanical properties of the composites were enhanced with increasing PVA concentration before it reached the optimal level (0.5 wt% for flexural strength and 1.0 wt% for impact strength). Further increment in the PVA concentration weakened the mechanical properties. In terms of the fiber content, the flexural strength of the composites made from modified rice husk fibers decreased with increasing content of the fiber, while an opposite trend was observed for the impact strength.
