Abstract:Well-organized hydroxide channels are constructed by introducing quaternary ammonium phthalocyanine (QAPc) into anion exchange membranes. A hydroxide conductivity as high as 236.2 mS cm(-1)@80 degrees C is successfully achieved by striking a balance between the self-aggregation advantage and the weak basicity weakness of the QAPc side chains. The strong pi-pi interaction between QAPc macrocycles is utilized to force the positive charged head groups to aggregate for the formation of hydroxide channels, and trimethylamine (TMA) head groups are added to increase regional OH- mobility. 5 nm hydroxide channels are confirmed by synchrotron radiation and transmission electron microscope methods. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation provide further theoretical chemistry evidences for the enhanced OH- transportation mechanism in the QAPc-containing AEMs.
Highly Controllable Ring–Chain Equilibrium in Quadruply Hydrogen Bonded Supramolecular Polymers

Abstract:Electron-rich dioxynaphthalene (DNP) group bridged bifunctional ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) derivatives (L1, L2, and L3) were synthesized, which could form small cyclic monomers, oligomers, or linear supramolecular polymers at certain concentration in solution, to achieve a highly controllable ring-chain equilibrium self-assembling supramolecular system. The ring-chain equilibrium of these supramolecular monomers constructed by different lengths of oligo(ethylene oxide) (oligoEO) chain as spacers were investigated by a combination of techniques, such as H-1 NMR, DOSY, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and viscometry. The experiment results demonstrated that there exists intramolecular pi-pi stacking interaction between DNP group and intramolecularly dimerized UPy motif in the monomeric cyclic form of these supramolecular monomers, and the strength of this pi-pi stacking interaction directly depends on the length of the oligoEO chain. Furthermore, strong intramolecular pi-pi stacking interaction was found to promote self-assembly favorable for intramolecularly cyclic monomerization, leading to a great increase of critical polymerization concentration (CPC). Monomer L1a with the shortest length of oligoEO chain is present as an exclusive type of intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded assembly, namely the cyclic monomers, over a broad concentration range (1.6-500 mM) in solution. Single crystal structure of the cyclic monomer Lib, which is an analogue of L1a, was thoroughly studied. The CPC values of monomer L2 and L3 with longer oligoEO chain are ca. 70 and 23 mM, respectively. However, L2 and L3 could perform selective cyclization over the entire concentration range in solution after threading into the tetracationic cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene)cyclophane (CBPQT(4+)) driven by host-guest interaction, which provides another supramolecular strategy to control ring-chain equilibrium. The combined results may provide new insights into the ring-chain equilibrium and offer valuable information on the understanding of the correlation between supramolecular assistance and polymerizability.

Abstract:The non-covalent interactions of chiral metal complexes with the achiral 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-sulonatophenyl) porphyrin (H4TTPS2-) have been investigated by UV-vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The results show that under acidic environments, only the chiral complex cations ([CoBr(NH3)(en)(2)](+), [Co(en)(3)](3+), [Ru(phen)(3)](2+)) could interact with H4TTPS2- to form chiral aggregates, accompanied with the metal-centered chirality information transferred to the formed J-aggregates. However, the chiral complex anion ([Co(edta)](-)) does not cause the self-assembly process. The competitive binding interactions between an achiral water-soluble cationic surfactant (N-hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride, CTAC) and a cationic polyelectrolyte (polyallylamine, PAA) with the chiral metal complex H4TTPS2- J-aggregates, respectively, were also investigated. It was found that chiral-symmetry-breaking phenomena occur in the cationic surfactant induced event. In the case of a cationic polyelectrolyte, it could change the conformational flexibility of the H4TTPS2- aggregates. These results may lead us to understand the possible mechanism of the supramolecular self-assembly process by the non-covalent interactions.
Quaternary-ammonium-immobilized Polystyrenes As Efficient and Reusable Heterogeneous Catalysts for Synthesis of Cyclic Carbonate: Effects of Linking Chains and Pendent Hydroxyl Group

Abstract:Spherical polystyrene-supported ammonium salts containing different linking chains between the support and ammonium groups were prepared as efficient and easily reusable heterogeneous cata-lysts for the cycloadditions of CO2 and epoxides. The effects of the length of the linking chains and a hydroxyl group pendent on the linking chain on the catalytic performance of ionic liquid immobi-lized catalysts and their mechanisms were studied through experiments and density functional theory calculations. It was found that, compared with a short linking chain, a long chain can make the halogen anion more negative and provide a larger contact area of the catalysts with the reac-tants, thus enhancing the reaction kinetics. The hydroxyl group can stretch the C–O bonds of the epoxides, promoting the reaction thermodynamics. As a result, for the cycloaddition of propylene oxide, the yield of propylene carbonate is much higher for the catalyst with a long linking chain (yield: 91.4%) compared with the yield for that with a short chain (yield: 70.9%), and is further increased in the presence of pendent hydroxyl groups (yield: 98.5%). The catalyst also shows a high catalytic activity even at mild temperature and good reusability (yield: ≥ 96% for 10 cycles), and the selectivity is always above 99%.

Abstract:Dual networks formed by entangled polymer chains and wormlike surfactant micelles have attracted increasing interest in their application as thickeners in various fields since they combine the advantages of both polymer- and surfactant-based fluids. In particular, such polymer-surfactant mixtures are of great interest as novel hydraulic fracturing fluids with enhanced properties. In this study, we demonstrated the effect of the chemical composition of an uncharged polymer poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and pH on the rheological properties and structure of its mixtures with a cationic surfactant erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl)methylammonium chloride already exploited in fracturing operations. Using a combination of several complementary techniques (rheometry, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, small-angle neutron scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy), we showed that a small number of residual acetate groups (2–12.7 mol%) in PVA could significantly reduce the viscosity of the mixed system. This result was attributed to the incorporation of acetate groups in the corona of the micellar aggregates, decreasing the molecular packing parameter and thereby inducing the shortening of worm-like micelles. When these groups are removed by hydrolysis at a pH higher than 7, viscosity increases by five orders of magnitude due to the growth of worm-like micelles in length. The findings of this study create pathways for the development of dual semi-interpenetrating polymer-micellar networks, which are highly desired by the petroleum industry.

Abstract:With all-atomic molecular dynamics method, we investigated the molecular array behaviors and dynamic properties of extended surfactant: alkyl polypropylene (PO) ether sulfonate (APS) at the water/oil interface. Detailed simulation results, including interfacial thickness, stretch degree and tilt angle, all indicated that the long PO chain curled near-evenly in a row of 4 PO units at the interface on low concentration and then stretched out to achieve tight alignment on high concentration. Based on the simulation results, we proposed a helical shape of long PO chain mechanism at the water/oil interface. Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrated that long enough PO chain played an important role in adjusting the size of hydrophobic group and producing the ultralow interfacial tension, which is in good agreement with the simulation analysis. This study will improve the design and synthesis of more efficient extended surfactants in enhancing crude oil recovery.

Abstract:Based on the benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7)/secondary ammonium salt molecular recognition motif, dual-responsive supramolecular chain extended polymers with a biodegradable poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) chain as the scaffold were successfully prepared by self-assembly of a heteroditopic macromonomer which was synthesized by a combination of ring-opening polymerization and click reaction. 1H NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR, solution viscometry, diffusion NMR and differential scanning calorimetry were employed to characterize these novel supramolecular chain extended polymers. Due to the environmental responsiveness of the recognition of the B21C7 host unit to the secondary ammonium salt guest moiety, the supramolecular chain extended polymers respond to pH and cation stimuli. The crystallization behavior of the PCL segments of the supramolecular chain extended polymers and the neutral counterpart were investigated by polarized optical microscopy. The B21C7/secondary ammonium salt host–guest interactions cause a decrease of the chain mobility of PCL and make the crystallization rate of PCL much slower in comparison with the case of the neutral counterpart.

Abstract:Self-assembly behavior of a double-bond-based amphiphilic graft copolymer consisting of hydrophobic polyallene backbone and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) side chains in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water was investigated. Polyallene backbone was first prepared via living coordination polymerization of 6-methyl-1,2-heptadien-4-ol (MHDO) initiated by [(eta(3)-allyl)NiOCOCF3](2). The targeted amphiphilic graft copolymer with relative narrow molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n = 1.22) was synthesized by the coupling reaction between the pendant hydroxyls of the backbone and acyl chloride end group of poly (ethylene glycol) via the grafting-onto approach. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) was determined by the fluorescence probe technique. Micelle morphologies could be well tuned by water content, initial copolymer content, and ion strength. In particular, this kind of achiral copolymer could aggregate to form chiral helical nanostructures under given conditions.

Abstract:Poly(acrylic acid)-graft-poly(ethylene oxide) (PAA-g-PEO) in aqueous solutions shows one fast and one slow relaxation mode in dynamic light scattering (DLS), but the mixture of PAA and PEO (PAA/PEO) in aqueous solution only has a single fast mode. The effects of pH, polymer concentration, and salt concentration on these two modes have been investigated using laser light scattering (LLS), viscometry, and rheological measurements. Our results showed that the hydrogen bonding between carboxylic group and ether oxygen led to the formation of large complexes among PAA-g-PEO chains, which were absent between PAA and PEO chains in PAA/PEO aqueous solutions. The addition of formamide can break these interchain complexes because the hydrogen bonding between formamide and PAA segment is stronger than that between PEO and PAA segment. Thermodynamically speaking, the formation of hydrogen bonds among PAA-g-PEO chains leads to a less entropy loss than that between PAA and PEO chains in PAA/PEO aqueous solution, because in the former case PEO is already chemically connected to PAA backbone. Therefore, the same enthalpy gain is sufficient to compensate the entropy loss in PAA-g-PEO aqueous solution relative to that in PAA/PEO aqueous solution, resulting in large interchain PAA-g-PEO complexes.

Abstract:The aggregation behavior and solid-state microstructures of conjugated polymers play an important role in optoelectronic properties and device performances. Adaption of classical polymer theory and phenomenological discussion of the structure were commonly applied to unravel the nature of aggregation. However, the broadened molecular weight distribution and the discrepancy in interactions between polymer backbones and alkyl chains increase the difficulty in pinpointing the nature of the aggregation mechanism and behavior. Here, four conjugated polymers were developed to construct the relationship between the polymer conformation and the aggregation behavior. The effect of the interunit torsion and the flexibility differences of the conjugated chains on the aggregation behaviors in solutions was investigated in detail. On this basis, a model combined with supramolecular polymerization and classical polymer theory brought a new perspective of thermodynamics to unravel the aggregation process in solution. The aggregation equilibrium inclined toward short-range/long-range pi-stacks with planar/torsional units, and the disaggregated species inclined toward dispersed chains/coils with a rigid/flexible backbone. Furthermore, the aggregation structures were inherited to the solid phase, resulting in excellent electronic properties for the planar and rigid polymers and strong domain-regulation ability for the torsional and flexible polymers. Our investigation pioneers the introduction of supramolecular aggregation theory into the study of the aggregation behavior of conjugated polymers in solution, which sheds light on the nature of the aggregation of conjugated polymers from a thermodynamic perspective, constructs a landscape for the aggregation process, and also provides guidance for the structure design and the selection of modulation methods matching the structure and performance requirements.

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium salt polymers, a kind of polyelectrolyte with a quaternary ammonium group, are widely used in traditional and emerging industries due to their good water-solubility, adjustable cationicity and molecular weight, high efficiency and nontoxicity. In this paper, firstly, the properties and several synthesis methods of typical quaternary ammonium salt monomers were introduced. Secondly, the research progress on the synthesis of polymers was summarized from the perspective of obtaining products with high molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution and high monomer conversion, and special functional polymers. Thirdly, the relationships between the structures and properties of the polymer were analyzed from the perspectives of molecular weight, charge density, structural stability, and microstructural regulation of the polymer chain unit. Fourthly, typical examples of quaternary ammonium salt polymers in the application fields of water treatment, daily chemicals, petroleum exploitation, papermaking, and textile printing and dyeing were listed. Finally, constructive suggestions were put forward on developing quaternary ammonium salt polymers with high molecular weights, strengthening the research on the relationships between the structures and their properties and pinpointing relevant application fields.

Abstract:The interactions between a host, water-soluble corona[n]-arene (S6-CAP), and a series of guests, bisquaternary ammonium derivatives (CnDAs), in water, were investigated. The host and guest can form 1:1 host-guest complex. Their binding constants decrease as the alkyl length of CnDAs increases, which can be tunable ranging from 103 to 106 M-1. The binding processes are mainly entropy-driven, while the enthalpy changes also play an important role in enhancing the host-guest interactions. In addition, a supra-amphiphile was fabricated with S6-CAP and a normal surfactant bearing bisquatemary. ammonium (C4R). The S6-CAP.C4R complex forms micellar aggregates in water, and the system possesses better assembling activity and dilution stability than its building block C4R. This study enriches the families of supra-amphiphiles with a new architecture, and employing such a supra-amphiphile in biofunctional materials is highly anticipated.
Enhancement of hydroxide conduction by self-assembly in anion conductive comb-shaped copolymers

Abstract:An anion exchange membrane (AEM) was prepared from comb-shaped copolymers bearing locally and densely functionalized side chains. In this study, we synthesized the graft copolymer of bromomethylated poly(phenylene oxide)-graft-quaternary ammonium functionalized 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (BPPO-g-QVBC), using an activator regenerated by electron transfer for atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) of QVBC from a BPPO macroinitiator. The BPPO-g-QVBC graft copolymers with a combination of a high graft density and appropriate graft length present advanced materials for AEMs. Flexible and transparent membranes were obtained by casting the polymers from NMP solutions, and displayed a microphase-separated morphology with nano-sized ionic clusters embedded in the hydrophobic BPPO matrix. Accordingly, the resultant membranes show considerably high conductivities, up to 0.1 S cm(-1) at 80 degrees C, derived from the special polymer architecture. This study gives some pioneering insights and directions from the viewpoint of macromolecular design to prepare highly conductive AEMs.

Abstract:The salt resistance of hydrophobically relating polymer fracturing fluid is one of the main indicators to meet the fracturing operation. Thus, a chain transfer agent was created in this study. Hydrophobically related polymer PDMA2 was synthesized in an aqueous solution through the RAFT approach. The salt resistance mechanism of the polymer was elucidated using molecular simulation software. The experimental results demonstrated that the salt resistance of the polymer can be enhanced by introducing long hydrophobic chain monomers via RAFT polymerization. Inorganic salt ions can improve the polymer skeleton and facilitate polymer chain bonding. The rotation radius of the hydrophobic polymer PDMA2 lowers as the salt concentration rises, allowing polymer molecule interaction. Combined with spatial conformation and fluorescence spectrum analysis, PDMA2 containing hydrophobic monomer was discovered to improve the association effect of polymer and produce more hydrophobic microregions. The radial distribution function results show that increasing the salt content compresses the polymer's main chain. On the polymer backbone, the radial distribution function between N-N atoms grows. This study demonstrates that the hydrophobic-association polymer can meet the service conditions of oilfield mineralized strata and lower the consumption of freshwater resources.

Abstract:A series of porous polymers bearing functional quaternary ammonium salts were solvothermally synthesized through the free radical copolymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) and functionalized quaternary ammonium salts. The obtained polymers feature highly cross-linked matrices, large surface areas, and abundant halogen anions. These polymers were evaluated as heterogeneous catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2 in the absence of co-catalysts and solvents. The results revealed that the synergistic effect between the functional hydroxyl groups and the halide anion Br(-) afforded excellent catalytic activity to cyclic carbonates. In addition, the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for at least five cycles without significant loss in activity.

Abstract:Nucleating agents (NA) is a kind of the most important additives in polymer industry. The phenomena of NA self-assembling/crystallizing into various supramolecular aggregations in the polymer melt and showing different nucleation effects have been widely reported. However, the process of the self-assembly formation, which is essential for understanding the exact nucleating mechanism of NAs, is not well elucidated. In this work, the self-assembly process of a bisamide NA, N,N′-dicyclohexylterephthalamide (DCTH), in polypropylene (iPP) matrix was systematically investigated. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results reveal that the self-assembly of DCTH is related to the dissociation/association of hydrogen bonds and the conformational change of molecules. Upon heating, the hydrogen-bond dissociation generates the “free” DCTH molecules in iPP melt and provides space for the conformational rotation of cyclohexyl groups toward co-plane direction with the aromatic core plane; while upon cooling, the hydrogen-bond association triggers the self-assembly/recrystallization of “free” DCTH molecules into supramolecular aggregations and the conformational rotation makes hydrogen bonds stronger. By exploring the microenvironments of individual chemical groups of DCTH and the interactions between DCTH and iPP matrix, we demonstrate the physical mechanism of how the NA self-assembles into supramolecular crystals at molecular level.

Abstract:The reduction of interfacial interaction and the deterioration of processing properties of aluminum hydrides (AlH 3 ) is the main challenges preventing its practical application. Here, a simple and effective core–shell structure aluminum hydrides@polydopamine (AlH 3 @PDA) complex was constructed through in-situ polymerization. The evolution of element states on the surface of AlH 3 conducted by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the successful introduction of PDA to form the core@shell structure, the thickness of the PDA coated layer increased with the increasing PDA dosage from 0.1 to 1.6% in mass fraction, and the maximum of thickness is 50 nm in TEM testing. Py GC/MS results proved that the increase of dopamine concentration leads to higher proportions of self-assemble units, whereas lower dopamine concentrations favor higher levels of chemical bonded components. Regarding whether PDA is a covalent polymer or a noncovalent aggregate of some species, the formation of intermediates, such as dopaminechrome and 5,6-dihydroxyindole played an important role to coordination interaction with AlH 3 in FTIR, Raman, and UV–Vis spectra testing. Compared with pure AlH 3 , the formation of organic PDA coating improved AlH 3 heat resistance. The adhesion work with GAP adhesive was also improved from 107.02 J/m 2 of pure AlH 3 to 111.13 mJ/m 2 of AlH 3 @PDA-5 complex. This paper provides well support for further practical application of AlH 3 in solid propellants.

Abstract:To address the practical issues of poor temperature and salt tolerance of polymers, a new amphoteric monomer (E)-N-(docos-13-enoyl)-N-methylglycine named CQ was developed. The polymer CQMP was synthesized by acrylamide (AM) and CQ as an associative monomer and sodium p-styrene sulfonate (SSS) as a functional monomer in aqueous solution. The structure of the products was confirmed by FTIR, 1 H NMR and TGA, while the micro-morphology of the polymer was observed by SEM. Taking HAPAM as a control, the properties of polymer in aqueous solution were studied as a function of salinity, shear rate, temperature, and polymer concentration. The oil displacement performance was also evaluated in detail. Additionally, the surface tension (SFT) and interfacial tension (IFT) of CQMP solution were measured. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of CQMP in aqueous solution and in NaCl solution are 2.13 g·L -1 and 1.79 g·L -1 ,respectively. The copolymer can reduce the interfacial tension between water and crude oil from Changqing Oilfield, with an IFT value of about 15.96 mN·m −1 . The results indicate that the critical association concentration (CAC) is approximately 600 mg·L -1 , and the polymer exhibits good salt tolerance and oil flooding performance. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulation demonstrated that CQ can enhance intermolecular interactions while maintaining the same hydrophobic chain content, thereby reinforcing the polymer's resistance temperature and salt. The laboratory flooding experiment showed that the enhance oil recovery of CQMP with 0.5 PV 3000 mg·L -1 was 12.23 % greater than that of HAPAM, which is promising for multiple applications in complex oil fields.
