Abstract:A multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (MEDFL) with simple line structure is experimentally demonstrated by using a Sagnac interferometer as a comb filter. Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a switchable multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber laser that employs cascaded weakly-coupled few-mode fiber (FMF) Sagnac fiber loops with mode differential delay line. A comb filter of multiple specific wavelengths is performed by incorporating a weakly-coupled FMF in cascaded Sagnac fiber loops. The incorporation of the weakly-coupled FMF is realized with all-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX), which can simultaneously generate transversal LP01 and LP11 modes. The comb filter characteristics of cascaded Sagnac fiber loops are simulated and analyzed by Jones matrix. By adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs), the fiber laser can operate in single-, dual-, and triple-wavelength laser states around C band. The side mode suppression ratio is larger than 30.0 dB. Moreover, the laser output stabilities for single-, dual-, and triple-wavelength lasing are investigated in a range of over 30 min at room temperature. Experimental results indicate that this work has potential applications in WDM systems, sensing, and instrument testing.

Abstract:A novel multiwavelength erbium-doped fibre laser is proposed by incorporating a section of dispersion-shifted fibre (DSF) and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Abstract:A wavelength tunable linear cavity erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser based on Sagnac loop incorporating with polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The Sagnac loop was composed of 0.5 m length PM-PCF, 1 × 2 optical coupler with 50:50 splitting ratio, and one polarization controller (PC). For the proposed fiber laser, the working threshold was 35 mW, the 3 m length EDF was used as gain medium, and 0.5 m length EDF was selected as saturable absorber to improve lasers stability. In the experiment, the comb filter effect was generated by Sagnac interferometer, and period was 2.52 nm. When the pump power was 150 mW, single-wavelength tunable laser output was realized within the range of 1528.73–1531.45 nm through adjusting PC, wavelength tuning interval was more than 0.58 nm, power difference was less than 3.681 dB, and signal to noise ratio (SNR) were higher than 31.101 dB. For the designed fiber laser, different groups of dual- and triple-wavelength lasers output were obtained, the power difference was lower than 7.349 and 7.724 dB, and SNR was more than 31.752 and 38.623 respectively. The single-, dual- and triple-wavelength laser stability was test within 20 min, and power and wavelength fluctuation were 3.325 dB and 0.07 nm respectively.

Abstract:We propose a spatial-mode switchable and multi-wavelength lasing all-fiber EDF ring laser based on Sagnac interferometer with mode MUX/DEMUX. We experimentally demonstrate that it has feasibility, can achieve multi-wavelength lasing and higher-order modes output. Single-, dual, triple-wavelength lasing for LP01, LP11, LP21 and hybrid modes are obtained with OSNR higher than 20-dB.

Abstract:We report a widely tunable V-cavity laser monolithically integrated with an electro-absorption modulator (EAM). The device shows a 41-nm wavelength tunability covering 51 channels at 100 GHz spacing on the ITU grid, with a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) higher than 47 dB. Error-free transmission over 50 km standard single-mode fiber at 10 Gb/s is demonstrated at all wavelengths over the tuning range. The integrated EAM exhibits a dynamic extinction ratio higher than 12.5 dB. The bit-error-rate measurements show a power penalty less than 3 dB for 50-km transmission. The results demonstrate that this ultra-compact and regrowth-free electro-absorption modulated tunable laser can be a cost-effective transmitter solution for DWDM metropolitan and access networks.

Abstract:<p>A novel widely tunable and interval-adjustable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) is experimentally demonstrated in this paper. It is based on the cascaded structure of two-segment Sagnac filter and Lyot filter with the assistance of nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). By properly adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs) in the laser cavity, the output wavelengths with different flexible lasing states can be obtained, such as tunable single-, dual-, triple-wavelength outputs with a tuning range more than 18 nm. The outputs of quad-, quintuple-, sextuple- and septuple-wavelength can also be tuned, but the step size of the tuning is not fixed due to the intense wavelength competition. In addition, the outputs can achieve changes in wavelength interval. The switchability and tuning range of the laser have been greatly improved, and the wavelength interval adjustment is more flexible. The maximum SMSR of the output laser can up to 47 dB. This EDFL can be used in optical fiber sensing, WDM network and other fields desiring very flexible optical source.</p>

Abstract:A multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser incorporating an semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based on a tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometer (as a comb filter) is proposed. Wavelength-spacing can be continuously tuned and multi-wavelength lasing with wavelength spacings of 0.4 nm, 0.8 nm, and 1.6 nm is demonstrated. The output of the proposed multi-wavelength laser is rather stable at room temperature and the output spectra can be adjusted by controlling the bias current of the SOA and the power of the pump laser diode.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength D-SIFBG has the advantages of small size, wavelength interval and flexible reflectivity, so it is suitable for tunable EDFL. Therefore, a single wavelength tunable EDFL based on multi-wavelength D-SIFBG is proposed. The pump source of the laser is a 980 nm semiconductor laser, and the resonator is composed of SIFBG1 with a reflectivity higher than 91% and SIFBG2 with a reflectivity higher than 87%. The gain medium is erbium-doped fiber. Based on gain equalization technology, stable single-wavelength tunable laser output is obtained at room temperature. The test results show that the 3 dB line width is less than 0.020 nm, the optical signal-to-noise ratio is more than 60.4 dB, the central wavelength shift and maximum output power fluctuation are less than 0.004 nm and 1.25 dBm respectively, and the maximum tunable range is 5.796 nm. The single-wavelength laser output from this multi-wavelength laser has good stability.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a high performance four-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL), enabled by a figure-8 compound-ring-cavity (F8-CRC) filter for single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) selection and a polarization-managed four-channel filter (PM-FCF) for defining four lasing wavelengths. We introduce a novel methodology utilizing signal-flow graph combined with Mason's rule to analyze a CRC filter in general and apply it to obtain the important design parameters for the F8-CRC filter used in this paper. By combining the functions of the F8-CRC filter and the PM-FCF filter assisted by the enhanced polarization hole-burning and polarization dependent loss, we achieve the EDFL with fifteen lasing states, including four single-, six dual-, four tri- and one quad-wavelength lasing operations. In particular, all the four single-wavelength operations are in stable SLM oscillation, typically with a linewidth of <600 Hz, a RIN of <=-154.58 dB/Hz@>=3 MHz and an output power fluctuation of <=+/-3.45%. In addition, all the six dual-wavelength operations have very similar performances, with the performance parameters close to those of the single-wavelength lasing operations. Finally, we achieve the wavelength spacing tuning of the dual-wavelength operations for the photonic generation of tunable microwave signals, and successfully obtain a signal at 23.10 GHz as a demonstration.

Abstract:We present a 1560-nm-band digitally wavelength tunable V-coupled-cavity semiconductor laser monolithically integrated with two waveguides based monitoring photodiodes (MPD) through deeply etched reflective trenches. The reflective trenches are designed to be 1.16 mu m wide, about three quarters of the wavelength, and are deeply etched through the waveguide with a depth larger than 4 mu m. Due to the high reflectivity of the etched trenches, a low threshold current of 19mA is achieved. Using a single electrode control, wavelength tuning of 22 channels at 100GHz spacing with SMSR above 35 dB is obtained. The relationship between the photocurrents of the two MPD at the two waveguide branches and the laser output power from the coupler side is investigated as a function of the wavelength. Since the integrated tunable laser with MPDs is very compact and does not involve any grating or epitaxial regrowth, it is suitable for low-cost multifunctional photonic applications for access and data center networks.

Abstract:We report the design and experimental results of a widely tunable three-section laser by using reflecting Fabry-Perot filters with deeply etched lossy half-wave coupling trenches. Good performance in side-mode suppression ratio and wavelength tuning range has been demonstrated experimentally. By introducing moderate coupling loss in the half-wave coupling trenches, high-mode selectivity can be achieved. The single-mode selectivity can be further improved by introducing slight gain in the Fabry-Perot filters. Electrical tuning of 12 channels covering as large as 84-nm wavelength range with side-mode suppression ratio up to 48 dB has been demonstrated. The large wavelength tuning range is a result of large temperature induced gain spectrum shift, which is verified by amplified spontaneous emission measurements
Experimental demonstration of a widely tunable two-section DFB laser

Abstract:We report our experimental results on a two-section DFB laser with a wide tuning range of over 10nm. The device consists of two individually injected gain-coupled DFB sections with a uniform grating pitch. The total device length is only 350um, with 150um for one section and 200um for the other. The threshold current is about 24mA total for the two electrodes. The lasing mode lies on the longer wavelength side of the stop band. In the tuning process, we adjust only one injected current monotonically until the other DFB mode at the shorter wavelength side of the stop band is about to be excited. Then we alter to the other electrode and repeat the process. We found that the shorter wavelength DFB mode can be suppressed efficiently through this method and a mode-hop-free tuning range as large as 11 nm can be obtained. The side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) in optimal conditions is maintained above 45 dB when the wavelength is tuned from 1541nm to 1550nm, while the output power variation is less than 3 dB. To our knowledge, this is the largest tuning range achieved for a two-section DFB laser with a simple uniform grating tuned only by injection current. The device is suitable for applications in DWDM systems as well as laser spectroscopy and lidar sensing.

Abstract:A novel interval-adjustable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) is experimentally demonstrated in this paper. The proposed EDFL is based on the cascaded structure of two-segment Sagnac filter and nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). By properly adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs), the wavelength interval and number of output wavelengths can be changed. When the wavelength interval is 2nm and 0.5nm, the number of wavelengths is 1–3 and 5–8, respectively. At the same time, when the number of output wavelengths is 6~8, the wavelengths can be tuned within a certain range. In order to compare the effects of two similar nonlinear loop mirrors on the outputs, a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) is used to replace the NOLM in the laser cavity. The number of output wavelengths is increased to 10 when using NALM. The structure and principle of NOLM and NALM are analyzed. The influences of the two structures on the stability and output power of the laser are also discussed.

Abstract:We report the design and experimental results of a single-electrode controlled four-section coupled-cavity tunable laser. The device is fabricated by standard photolithography without epitaxial regrowth. A nine-channel switching of 100 GHz spacing, which is tuned by current injection on a single electrode, is demonstrated. The side-mode-suppression-ratio of each channel is between 31 and 37 dB and the power variation of all channels is <;1.6 dB. The performances under different temperatures are investigated.

Abstract:A widely tunable narrow-linewidth laser consisting of a sampled-grating distributed Bragg reflector (SG-DBR) laser and an external silica-based multi-period-delayed feedback (MPDF) photonic circuit is fabricated and experimentally demonstrated. The measured results show that a 58-nm lasing wavelength tuning range together with a more than 40 dB side-mode suppression ratio can be achieved. Notably, among the wavelength tuning range, all linewidths remain below 1 kHz, which are narrowed by more than three orders of magnitude compared to the average intrinsic linewidth of 3 MHz for the original SG-DBR laser. Besides, since the proposed MPDF structure has an ultra-dense distribution of the multi-period feedback, the linewidth reduction capability can be maintained over the entire operating wavelength range does not require free spectral range (FSR)-alignment or any extra phase match. Such widely tunable narrow-linewidth laser might offer a compact, cost-effective and easily-implemented solution for next-generation applications including ultra-wideband dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on a taper-coupled microbottle resonator is proposed and investigated experimentally. The taper-coupled microbottle resonator has the comb filter characteristics with Q factor 2.9 × 104, which is integrated into an EDFL system. The taper-coupled microbottle resonator was packaged by ultraviolet glue, which has excellent stability of output power and wavelength at room temperature. Then, switchable dual-, triple-, quad- and quint-wavelength fiber laser states can be achieved by adjusting the polarization controller (PC). Furthermore, for dual-wavelength and triple-wavelength laser state, the position of output wavelengths also can be precisely modulated with the PC. The developed multi-wavelength EDFL has the optical signal to noise ratio as high as 40 dBm, and the wavelength shift and peak power fluctuation are less than 0.03 nm and 6 dBm.

Abstract:This letter describes a switchable multi-wavelength actively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) structure with Sagnac filter and electro-optic modulator (EOM). The intensity-dependent loss (IDL) generated by the constructed NPR structure can suppress the mode competition caused by EDF, combined with a comb filter Sagnac loop which composed of only 2-m-long polarization maintaining fiber (PMF), the constructed laser generates nine-wavelengths laser output with a constant wavelength interval of 3 nm. When the NPR structure is removed, the constructed laser generates quadruple-wavelengths laser output with 3 nm constant wavelength interval. It is proved that the effect of the NPR can suppress mode competition to achieve multi-wavelength laser output. In the laser with the constructed NPR structure, the nine-wavelengths laser output has a maximum wavelength shift of 0.21 nm and a maximum power fluctuation of 0.69 dB, while when the NPR structure is removed from the constructed laser, for the quadruple-wavelengths laser output, the maximum wavelength shift is 0.16 nm and the maximum power fluctuation is 0.29 dB. When the constructed laser with or without NPR structure, the minimum Q-switched pulse width and maximum average output power are 1.42μs, 1.24μs and 3.2μW, 10.2μW, respectively.

Abstract:A novel vernier effect filter is designed utilizing two cascaded Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). Integrating the filter into an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL), the tunability of laser wavelength is achieved. Each MZI comprises two sequentially interconnected 3 dB optical couplers (OCs), where the incoming light is initially split into two arms at the first OC and subsequently recombined at the second OC. Interference occurs due to the optical path difference between these two beams. Notably, the two MZIs exhibit closely matched free spectral ranges (FSRs), leading to the formation of a broadened envelope in the superimposed spectrum. By delicately adjusting the optical path difference between the two arms of one MZI, a little drift of the interference spectrum is induced. This small amount of drift, in turn, triggers a significant movement of the envelope, giving rise to the so-called vernier effect. Integrating the vernier effect filter into an EDFL, the wavelength of the fiber laser can be tuned from 1542.56 nm to 1556.62 nm, with a tuning range of 14.06 nm. Furthermore, by employing a high-precision stepper motor, a remarkable tuning accuracy of 0.01 nm is attainable. The side mode suppression ratio of all wavelengths is above 55 dB. In comparison to reported tunable fiber lasers utilizing MZI filters, the proposed fiber laser in this study offers enhanced precision and a more user-friendly tuning process.
