Abstract:Recently, rare earth (RE) ion doped single-phased phosphors, which can emit tunable colors upon single wavelength excitation, have received a great deal of attention, but most of them involve multiple dopants as luminescence centers. This work reports on single-phased LuVO4:Eu3+ phosphors with tunable emission colors upon a single wavelength excitation while using Eu3+ as a single dopant ion. The tunable emission is realized through precisely manipulating the energy transfer efficiency from VO43− to Eu3+ by controlling the Eu3+ doping content, which allows modulating the photoemission intensity ratio between VO43− and Eu3+ upon excitation at 265 nm and therefore color tuning from blue (0.2204, 0.2194) to red (0.6703, 0.2986). Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy measurements reveal that the energy transfer process occurs 4 μs after the excitation and becomes dominant 10 μs later with the disappearance of the VO43− emission. The temperature-dependent PL spectra show that the energy transfer can be accelerated as the temperature increases, and it leads to abnormal enhancement of the Eu3+ emission at the earlier state. A similar scenario is not observed upon exciting the phosphors at the intrinsic absorption of Eu3+, which implies that the reversible energy transfer from Eu3+ to VO43− is impossible. Our results demonstrate a feasible strategy for tuning the emission color of single-phased phosphors through controlling the energy transfer process from the host to the dopant, and it opens up new possibilities for designing tunable luminescent materials for future optoelectronics applications.

Abstract:The achievement of multiple emission color phosphors has a significant importance in screen display, lighting devices, and multicolor imaging, but it still faces formidable challenges. In this work, double perovskite La2MgTiO6: Tb3+, Eu3+ phosphors with tunable emissions are designed and successfully synthesized. The obtained phosphors can emit intense green (Tb3+), red (Eu3+), and yellow emissions (Tb3+/Eu3+) via varying the co-doping concentration of Tb3+ and Eu3+. The CIE coordinates exhibit an excellent linear behavior in La2MgTiO6: Tb3+, Eu3+, revealing the possibility of linear adjustment of multiple emission colors. Detailed material characterization demonstrates that the multicolor tunable emission originates from energy transfer between Tb3+ and Eu3+. The decay dynamics analysis suggests that the multipole interaction between Tb3+ and Eu3+ is quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. A white light-emitting diode device with color rendering index of 84.7, correlated color temperature of 4684 K, and CIE coordinate of (0.3472, 0.3083) is fabricated by combining La2MgTiO6: Tb3+, Eu3+ yellow phosphor and BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ blue phosphor. Our results reveal that La2MgTiO6: Tb3+, Eu3+ phosphors are promising luminescent materials in white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:In this work, we report a color-tunable green-orange-emitting phosphor by introducing Bi3+ and Eu3+ into Ba3Lu4O9 host lattice. The emission spectra of Ba3Lu4O9:Bi3+,Eu3+ cover the whole visible spectral region, and present both the typical emissions from P-3(1) - S-1(0) transitions of Bi3+ and D-5(0,1) - F-7(J) transitions of Eu3+. The energy transfer behavior in the phosphor has been verified, based on which the emitting color of Ba3Lu4(0.98-y)O9:0.08Bi(3+),4yEu(3+) (y = 0-0.08) can be tuned from yellowish green (0.3188, 0.4491) to orange (0.5304, 0.3871). The phosphor Ba3Lu3.6O9:0.08Bi(3+),0.32Eu(3+) shows 33.3% improvement in emission intensity of Eu3+ compared with that of Ba3Lu3.92O9:0.32Eu3+. Moreover, soft polydimethylsiloxane/phosphor composite films were prepared utilizing the Ba3Lu4O9:Bi3+,Eu3+. Intense green-orange emissions suggest that the phosphors and corresponding s-PDMS-based films can be considered as promising candidates for near-UV pumped lighting and flexible devices. Abstract:A series of original tunable-luminescence phosphors K3Lu(PO4)2: Tb3+, Eu3+ with efficient energy transfer (ET) was synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The samples were characterized via X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, CIE chromaticity coordinates, and fluorescence decay analysis. The energy band and density of states of K3Lu(PO4)2 were analyzed by the first-principles method. The cross-relaxation of Tb3+-doped phosphors was investigated as well. The ET from Tb3+ to Eu3+ ions, realizing through the electric dipole-dipole (d-d) interaction with a high ET efficiency of 98.36%, could be controlled principally by the Tb3+/Eu3+ doping concentration ratio, yielding the tunable emissions from green (0.293, 0.537) to orange-red (0.563, 0.367) range. Based on the obtained results, a three-phosphor-conversion white light-emitting diode (w-LED) was fabricated through the integration of a 365 nm chip and commercial blue-emitting BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ phosphors, green-emitting SiAlON: Eu2+ phosphors, and orange-red-emitting K3Lu(PO4)2: 0.1 Tb3+, 0.06Eu3+ phosphors. The appliance emits the white light at a suitable correlated color temperature of 3678 K and a high color rendering index of 91.4. These parameters are almost equal to those of ideal white light, which opens up the prospects for using this up-and-coming phosphor for warm w-LED applications.

Abstract:A novel single-phased tunable emitting phosphor Ba9Lu2Si6O24:Bi3+, Eu3+ (BLSO: Bi3+, Eu3+) was successfully prepared via a simple solid-state approach. The main excitation peaks range from 320 to 400 nm of BLSO: Bi3+ were identified by photoluminescence characterization, indicating BLSO:Bi3+ viable for ultraviolet (UV) excitation. Emission spectra show that Bi3+ occupies at least two nonequivalent sites in BLSO host, and display broad emission peaks at 410 and 490 nm when excited by UV light, respectively. As red emitting center Eu3+ was introduced into BLSO: Bi3+, significant energy transfer (ET) occurs from Bi3+ to Eu3+ through a dipoledipole mechanism. The ET efficiency reaches 97.57%. By varying the doped ratio of Bi3+ and Eu3+, tunable light and white emission can be easily realized. Results indicate that BLSO:Bi3+, Eu3+ is a potential tunable emission phosphor in UV excited W-LEDs.

Abstract:Manipulating the distribution of rare earth activators in multiple cations' sites of phosphor materials is an essential step to obtain tunable emission for the phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). However, it remains the challenge to realize the photoluminescence tuning in the single-phased phosphor with single activator, due to the uncertain location of doped ions and adjustable crystallographic sites. Herein we reported the β-Ca3(PO4)2-type solid solution phosphors (Ca8.98- xSr x)MgK(PO4)7:2%Eu2+ ( x = 0-8.98) and the effects of replacing Ca2+ by Sr2+ ions on the phase structures and color-tunable emission were investigated in detail. Tunable color emission has been realized by manipulating the redistribution of Eu2+ ions among different cation sites with adjustable chemical environment, and the related mechanism on the local structures has been discussed. The high Ra (85) and low color temperature (CCT) (4465 K) values of the as-fabricated WLEDs lamp indicate that (Ca4.98Sr4)MgK(PO4)7:2%Eu2+ can act as a promising white-emitting phosphor for single-phased pc-WLEDs. This work provides a new insight into the tuning of the compositions and multiple activator sites toward single-phased white emission.

Abstract:A series of Eu3+/Bi3+ single and co-doped La2MgSnO6 phosphors are synthesized by the solid-state method. The crystal structure, optical properties, energy transfer processes, and thermal stability of phosphors are investigated systematically. Under 331 nm excitation, both the orange-red emission of Eu3+ ions ranging from 500 to 750 nm and the blue emission band centered at 403 nm are observed in the La2MgSnO6:Eu3+, Bi3+ samples. With the doping concentration of Eu3+ changing, the emission of La2MgSnO6:Eu3+, Bi3+ phosphors can be adjusted from blue (0.219, 0.350) to orange-red light (0.644, 0.341) in chromaticity coordinate. Furthermore, the security ink prepared by phosphors can be effectively used for encryption writing and anti-counterfeit marking. Additionally, the latent fingerprint developed using La2MgSnO6: Eu3+, Bi3+ phosphor demonstrates excellent contrast and sensitivity.

Abstract:A series of new emission-tunable phosphors Bi0.95−yPO4:0.05Tb3+,yEu3+ were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with surfactant-free environment. XRD results indicated that phosphors possess the standard BiPO4 monoclinic structure. From the luminescence spectra and decay curves, the energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ was confirmed. The efficient Tb3+ to Eu3+ energy transfer can be used to tune the emission color from green, yellow to orange by simply changing the concentration of europium, making the materials have potential applications in three-color-based displays and white light illumination. Finally, the energy transfer mechanism between Tb3+ and Eu3+ was demonstrated to be the electric quadrupole–quadrupole interaction based on Dexter׳s energy transfer formula and the Inokuti–Hirayama model.

Abstract:A set of colour tuning K 2 Ba(MoO 4 ) 2 : Dy 3+ /Eu 3+ (KBM: Dy 3+ /Eu 3+ ) phosphors were fabricated by solid-state method. The phase purity of as-prepared materials was validated by XRD and DRS analyses. The KBM: 0.03Dy 3+ sample exhibits two major luminescence lines at 481 and 572 nm when excited by 351 nm light, corresponding to Dy 3+ ions' typical transitions of 4 F 9/2 → 6 H J (J = 15/2, 13/2). By introducing Eu 3+ ions into KBM: 0.03Dy 3+ phosphor, the ET from Dy 3+ to Eu 3+ ions arises, leading to colour tuning from green via yellowish green to pink with changing Eu 3+ ions' concentration, along with the lowest CCT of KBM: 0.03Dy 3+ /0.03Eu 3+ sample. It can be verified by PLE and PL spectra analysis combined with the decay times of KBM: 0.03Dy 3+ /yEu 3+ samples. The energy transfer mechanism is also expounded. Meanwhile, the emission intensities at 423 K still maintain 72.8% for Dy 3+ ions and 91.2% for Eu 3+ ions relative to 303 K of the KBM: 0.03Dy 3+ /0.03Eu 3+ sample, displaying its brilliant thermal stability. All these results connote that KBM: Dy 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphors are prospected to be used for the near-UV excited white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:The color-tunable Sr3Sc(PO4)(3):Tb3+, Eu3+ phosphors were synthesized by high-temperature solid-phase method. XRD results indicate that all phosphors doped with and without rare ions are pure orthophosphate in structure. Under 376 nm excitation, the photoluminescence emission spectra show the increase in Eu3+ concentration caused the intensity of Tb3+ emission peak to decrease, and the intensity of Eu3+ emission peak to increase, indicating that the energy transfer occurs from Tb3+ to Eu3+. Based on theoretical calculation, the energy transfer efficiency was found to be about 97.7% and the dipole-quadrupole interaction is assigned to the energy transfer mechanism. By adjusting the Tb3+/Eu3+ ratio, yellow-green, yellow and yellow-orange color shift can be achieved. Furthermore, the phosphor has a quenching temperature of about 553 K and an activation energy of 0.1708 eV.

Abstract:A series of Bi3+ and/or Eu3+ doped LiGd5P2O13 (LGPO) were synthesized via a solid state reaction. In the LiGd5P2O13 lattice, Bi3+ shows a broad bluish-green emission around 500 nm and Eu3+ exhibits typical f-f red emissions. Based on the Bi3+ -> Eu3+ energy transfers, the luminescence colors can be tuned from bluish-green to orange by altering the Bi3+/Eu3+ ratio. Under the 290 nm excitation, the sample with optimal composition of LGPO:0.1Bi(3+),0.01Eu(3+) exhibits a white light emission with a CRI of 82 and a CCT of 4250 K. The energy transfer mechanism from Bi3+ to Eu3+ in the LiGd5P2O13 host was ascribed to the dipole-dipole interaction. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of luminescent Ba0.79Al10.9O17.14:xEu (x = 0.005–0.12) phosphors were prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction in air atmosphere. The coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ was observed and verified by photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and diffuse reflection spectra. The band emission peaking at 430 nm was assigned to 4F65D–4F7 transition of Eu2+, and another four emissions peaking at 589, 619, 655, and 704 nm were attributed to 4F–4F transitions of 5D0–7F J (J = 1, 2, 3, 4) of Eu3+. The related mechanism of self-reduction was discussed in detail. The color of the Ba0.79Al10.9O17.14:xEu phosphors could be shifted from blue (0.23, 0.10) to red (0.42, 0.27) by doping Li+ ions, and the temperature dependence properties were investigated.

Abstract:A series of novel emission-tunable ScPO4:xTb3+, yEu3+ phosphors were prepared by a high temperature solid-state reaction. The phase purity was examined using X-ray diffraction refinement. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the crystal information, luminescence properties and energy transfer between Tb3+ and Eu3+ are analyzed systematically. The cross relaxation from 5D3 to 5D4 of single doped Tb3+ in the host is investigated. The energy transfer between Tb3+ and Eu3+ has been demonstrated by the decay times, which are ascribed to the dipole–dipole (d–d) mechanism, and the ηT reaches 54.4%. Additionally, the energy transfer critical distance between Tb3+ and Eu3+ was calculated to be about 12.95 A. The emission color can be adjusted from green to yellow to orange-red by tuning the ratio of Tb3+/Eu3+. The ScPO4:0.03Tb3+, 0.025Eu3+ exhibits good thermal stability, indicating its great potential in w-LED applications.

Abstract:Rare earth-doped Ba3La(VO4)3 phosphors with tunable emitting colors were firstly explored and their photoluminescence properties were systematically investigated. The experimental results show that the Ba3La(VO4)3 phosphors exhibit high-brightness self-activated emission and enable us to sensitize the luminescence of rare earth activators. Under near-ultraviolet (UV) excitation, both the broadband emission from VO43- groups and the sharp peak emissions from Eu3+ ions are observed in Ba3La(VO4)3:Eu3+ phosphors. Modulation of the emitting color from green to red can be realized by adjusting the Eu3+ doping concentration, which is assigned to an efficient energy transfer from VO43- to Eu3+ ions. Notably, the optical thermometry of Ba3La(VO4)3:Eu3+ was characterized based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of VO43- and Eu3+ emissions in the 298-573 K range, with the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of 0.0515 K-1 and 1.77% K-1 at 298 K. In addition, similar phenomena were observed in Sm3+ and Dy3+-doped Ba3La(VO4)3 phosphors. These results verify a feasible strategy for varying the emission color and realizing optical thermometry in the single-component phosphors by adjusting the energy transfer between the host and the activator. It provides new possibilities for the design of multifunctional materials for white light-emitting diodes and non-contact thermometry.
Color-tunable emissions realized by Tb3+ to Eu3+ energy transfer in ZnGdB5O10 under near-UV excitation

Abstract:Photoluminescent (PL) energy transfer (ET) between two typical rare earth activators Tb3+ and Eu3+ is utilized to achieve color-tunable emission and the color range is apparently dependent on the ET efficiency. In the target host ZnGdB5O10 (ZGBO), the relatively low symmetric coordination environment of rare earth cation not only suppresses the parity-forbidden law of the 4f-4f transitions of Tb3+ in the near-UV region, but also enhances the internal quantum efficiency (IQE), where the optimal IQE is 65.61% for ZGBO:0.8Tb3+. Moreover, its ET to Eu3+ is highly efficient, i.e. 94.71% in ZGBO:0.8Tb3+, 0.10Eu3+, which eventually leads to a wide range of color-tunable emissions from green (0.2915, 0.5915) to red (0.6207, 0.3731). The systematical PL spectra study on Tb3+/Eu3+ singly- and co-doped phosphors suggests the ET mechanism is through the electric dipole-dipole interaction according to the Inokuti-Hirayama (I-H) model. Additionally, the in-situ high temperature PL spectra indicate the very high thermal stability of ZnGd0.19Tb0.8Eu0.01B5O10, indicating the potential candidate to the near-UV light emitting diodes pumped phosphors.
