Abstract:This paper highlights the lubricating and film-forming behaviors of diketone and surface characteristics of tribopairs after the friction test. An ultralow friction coefficient of 0.007 is accomplished on steel surfaces with diketone. The existence of tribochemical adsorption films inside the wear track is directly measured and observed. Moreover, a well-developed conformal contact surface morphology is generated between two friction pairs, which can be helpful to the realization of ultralow friction on rough surfaces. In addition, the film thickness of diketone was detected using by relative optical interference intensity (ROII) under different rolling speeds. Present work reveals that diketone lubricant has a good lubricating performance on steel surfaces, and can be extended to applications with small loads.

Abstract:Superlubricity, especially achieved using oil-based materials, is of great significance for the reliability of mechanical systems. In this study, the superlubricity (mu approximate to 0.006) of steel surfaces using a synthetic 1,3-diketone lubricant EPBD-02/01 was investigated. The friction test shows that the superlubricity of EPBD-02/01 was induced by a tribochemical running-in process, through which the contact pressure was dramatically reduced. By comparing with a surface generated by the mechanical polishing, it was found that the surface-chemisorption of diketone plays an important role in the lubrication. Moreover, combining with the shear-thinning behavior of EPBD-02/01, it was supposed that the superlubricity of 1,3-diketone is based on autonomous viscosity control over a wide range of velocities in the thin film lubrication regime.

Abstract:Achievement of steady and reliable super-low friction at the steel/steel contact interface, one of the most tribological systems applied for mechanical moving parts, is of importance for prolonging machine lifetime and reducing energy consumption. Here we reported that the superlubricity performance of the steel/steel sliding interface lubricated with tiny amounts of diketone solution strongly depends on the oxygen content in surrounding environment. The increase of oxygen not only significantly shortens the initial running-in time but also further reduces the stable coefficient of friction in superlubricity stage due to the enhancement of tribochemical reactions. On the one hand, more severe oxidation wear occurring at higher oxygen content facilitates material removal of the contact interface, lowering the contact pressure and the corresponding initial friction. On the other hand, the growth of iron ions during the shear process in high oxygen environment promotes the formation of chelate which acted as an effective lubricated film chemisorbed at the steel/steel friction interface to further lower the interfacial friction. The results provide a new opportunity to further optimize the tribological performance of diketone superlubricity system, especially towards the lubrication of mechanical engineering materials.

Abstract:Friction was the main way of energy loss in society, and reducing friction has become a focal point in current research. Inspired by special wetting phenomena, an asymmetric multiphase composite (AMPC) friction system was constructed. Tribological behavior of the friction system was evaluated using hydrogel on anodized aluminum as friction pair and superhydrophobic alumina with micro/nano-composite as substrate. Ultra-low friction coefficients (similar to 10(-3)) were measured under both Cassie and Wenzel regimes. Especially in Wenzel state, increased contact stress or extended shear rate promoted the formation of transfer lubricant film, thus enabling the ultra-low friction coefficient. Moreover, the system showed mechanical stability during prolonged water lubrication. This novel lubrication approach may provide valuable scientific solutions for specific tribology applications.

Abstract:The complex dynamics of tribofilm formation on boundary-lubricated steel surfaces were investigated in real time by combining in situ measurements of the temporal variation of the coefficient of friction and contact voltage. Sliding experiments were performed with various blends consisting of base oil, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) additive, and two different dispersants at an elevated oil temperature for a wide range of normal load and fixed sliding speed. The evolution of the transient and steady-state coefficient of friction, contact voltage, and critical sliding distance (time) for stable tribofilm formation were used to evaluate the tribological performance of the tribofilms. The blend composition affected the load dependence of the critical sliding distance for stable tribofilm formation. Tribofilm friction was influenced by competing effects between the additive and the dispersants. Among various formulations examined, the tribofilm with the best friction characteristics was found to be the blend consisting of base oil, a small amount of ZDDP, and a bis-succinimide dispersant treated with ethylene carbonate. The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of the present experimental approach to track the formation and removal of protective tribofilms under boundary lubrication conditions in real time.

The Synergistic Effect of Diketone and Its Chelate Enables Macroscale Superlubricity for a Steel/steel Contact

Abstract:In this article, the Claisen condensation method was used to synthesize 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-nonane-1,3-dione. The tribological properties of diketone, chelate and PAO6 were investigated. Among them, when the ratio of diketone to chelate in the mixed solution was 4:6, the optimal macroscale superlubricity can be obtained, the friction coefficient, wear scar diameter and contact pressure were 0.006, 210 mu m and 105.2 MPa, respectively. Surface analysis showed that diketone can be adsorbed on the surface of the metal friction pair through tribochemical reactions. Characterization of the cross-section of the friction pair confirmed that a 2.7 nm thick film was indeed formed on the surface. The excellent lubrication performance of the mixed solution was due to the synergistic effect between diketone and chelate.

Abstract:The tribological behaviors of steel–aluminium and steel–steel friction pairs lubricated by aqueous solution with amine-polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene-ether, KE-1, as additives are investigated with the help of universal micro-tribotester. The results show that the lubricant has a good effect on the performances of friction reducing and anti-wear. It demonstrates a better performance to steel–steel friction pair than steel–aluminium pairs for the anti-wear property under same conditions.

Ultra-Low Friction Achieved by Diluted Lactic Acid Solutions

Abstract:Notable lubrication performance was found using lactic acid solutions between two solid surfaces, silica glass against silicon nitride. The sliding friction coefficient was as low as 0.02 under a Hertzian contact pressure up to 400 MPa with a quite low concentration of 0.085 mol L−1. The results in the present work also exhibit the significant effect of concentration on the running-in process. A shortened running-in period, which could be contributed to the effective adsorption of the lactic acid molecules on the solid substrates, could be obtained by increasing the concentration of the lactic acid solution. In addition, surface hydroxyl groups gained by piranha solution were suggested to effectively reduce the friction. The work suggests that the excellent lubricity of lactic acid can be mostly contributed to the surface adsorption combined with the surface hydroxylation.
Effect of the Molecular Structure of 1,3-Diketones on the Realization of Oil-Based Superlubricity on Steel/Steel Friction Pairs

Abstract:In this article, five kinds of 1,3-diketones and their chelates with different molecular structures were prepared, and their tribological properties were tested. The experimental results show that the running-in time and friction coefficient of the friction pairs lubricated by 1,3-diketones containing a benzene ring increased with the increase of the carbon chain length. In addition, only the friction pair lubricated by 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-butane-1,3-dione (0201) and 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-nonane-1,3-dione (0206) could achieve stable superlubricity. When the benzene ring was replaced with a carbon six-membered ring, it was found that although the friction pair lubricated by this lubricant could achieve superlubricity, the wear of the friction pair was severe, and obvious abrasive wear occurred. In addition, the lubricants prepared by mixing 1,3-diketones and the corresponding chelates in a ratio of 4:6 had greatly improved lubricating properties compared to 1,3-diketones. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the surface of the friction pair after the test and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses of 1,3-diketones before and after the experiment, we found that the necessary conditions for the friction pair lubricated by 1,3-diketone to achieve superlubricity were formation of tribochemical adsorption films and the presence of chelates in solution.

Abstract:In this work, the macroscopic superlubricity with an extremely low coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.004 was achieved on the friction pair of the amorphous carbon (a-C) film / steel with the lubrication of 3-hydroxypropionic acid aqueous solution (3HPA (aq) ). The excellent lubrication performance was ascribed to the solid-liquid synergistic lubrication effect between the a-C film and the 3HPA. Abstract:Ultralow friction coefficient (μ) of a polyalkylene glycol (PAG) aqueous solution obtained in both droplet state (40 μL) and full immersion state after a running‐in period. Here, two key factors in achieving the superlubricity state (μ < 0.01) demonstrated: the low shearing strength of the hydrated layer and the presence of a suitable amount of free water molecules. In the initial running‐in period, a decrease in contact pressure contributes to the formation of elastohydrodynamic behavior of fluid. The hydrogen‐bonded PAG chains produce a hydrated layer between two sliding solid surfaces so as to lower the shear strength. The presence of free water molecules effectively weakens interactions between polymer chains. Therefore, the superlubricity state can be realized over a wide range of concentrations (30–60 wt%). Present work shows the mechanism of a stable lubricating system with superior tribological properties, and has a significant potential in industrial applications.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to find appropriate surface potentials under which the ZDDP tribofim formation can be promoted efficiently with low ZDDP concentrations. Firstly, the boundary lubrication performance of ZrO2 ball and AISI 52100 steel plate in propylene carbonate (PC)/diethyl succinate (DES) blended with different ZDDP concentrations was investigated. With increase of ZDDP concentrations, the coefficient of friction and wear volume decreased and the tribofilm covered wider regions within the wear scars. Secondly, the boundary lubrication performance of the same tribo-system under different surface potentials was studied with a relative low ZDDP concentration. The coefficient of friction and wear decreased and the tribofilm-covered area increased along with the elevation of surface potentials, which is similar to the above mentioned concentration test results. Thirdly, the difference of ZDDP tribofilm chemical structures under different surface potentials were characterized by TEM, EDS and XPS. Finally, the mechanism of electrochemical effect on ZDDP tribofilm formation was discussed. It was considered that the effects of applied potentials on the adsorption of ZDDP additive and on activation energy of electrochemical reactions on the steel surface are the reasons for the observed electro-tribochemical experiment results.
Accelerating Macroscale Superlubricity through Carbon Quantum Dots on Engineering Steel Surfaces

Abstract:A liquid superlubricating material containing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) is synthesized using citric acid as a carbon source. The introduction of CQDs significantly shortens the running‐in period required to achieve superlubrication and reduces the wear rate of the friction pair surface. This work offers a novel approach for developing liquid superlubricating materials with a shortened running‐in period for use in steel tribopairs. Macroscale superlubricity on engineering steel surfaces offers a promising solution for minimizing friction and wear in engineering applications. However, achieving superlubricity typically requires a long running‐in period, which may result in significant wear for the friction pair. Herein, a new lubricant with superlubricating properties is rationally designed by using polyethylene glycol (PEG) and critic acid (CA) under complexing effect with a running‐in period of about 800 s. Importantly, the introduction of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) obtained from the pyrolysis of CA into PEG aqueous solution shortens the running‐in period for achieving macroscale superlubricity (μ ≈ 0.005) between steel/steel contact to 44 s. The corresponding wear rate (1.15 × 10−7 mm3 N−1 m−1) on the steel disk is reduced by 77% due to the shorter running‐in time. Furthermore, the surface analysis combined with the molecular dynamics simulations demonstrates that CQDs easily adsorb on the surface of the friction pair, forming a carbon film that reduces interaction energy between the lubricant molecules and the substrate. This work provides new insights into the lubrication mechanism of CQDs and contributes to the design of liquid superlubricants with short running‐in periods and low wear rates on engineering steel surfaces.

Abstract:Hydrogen-deficient amorphous carbon (a-C:H) is subjected to abnormally high friction in an inert environment, and the possibility of maintaining ultra-low friction is still a great challenge. Here, nanodiamond and hexagonal boron nitride are used to improve the tribological properties of a-C:H films. Particularly, an excellent synergistic lubrication effect was obtained after surface treatment using a solution droplet of nanodiamond + h-BN mixture with a mass ratio of 1:1 and a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL, and concurrently vacuum heated at 80 °C. The COF also decreased sharply to be below 0.001, about two orders of magnitude lower than the case without surface treatment. Correspondingly, the wear rate of steel ball was also decreased by ∼97%. The dominant factor to obtain ultra-low friction is the incommensurate contact between the tribolayer formed by nanodiamond + hexagonal boron nitride and the hydrogen passivation layer. Meanwhile, the incommensurate contact of mismatched h-BN nanoflakes promotes the formation of ultra-low friction. Besides, low shear slip at the interface formed by the in-situ growth of h-BN layered shear band and ND + h-BN nano-composited shear band, respectively, rubbing against the upper ND + h-BN mixed tribolayer also makes a contribution. The ultra-low friction is achieved under the joint action of these factors. These findings can enrich the understanding of the surface modification of a-C:H films by low dimensional nano-lubricants. It is helpful to develop solid carbon films with more adaptability and robustness under extreme working conditions and provide important scientific and technical guidance.

An investigation of fretting wear behaviors of bonded solid lubricant coatings

Abstract:Three different bonded solid lubrication coatings, i.e. a bonded MoS2 coating, a bonded graphite coating and a bonded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating, on AISI E4142 steel were studied in order to compare their fretting wear behaviors and mechanisms. Fretting tests were conducted on the steel substrate and the coatings under the same conditions. Dynamic analyses were performed in combination with examinations through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Experimental results show that the three coatings have excellent anti-friction and wear-resistant performances under fretting condition, and strongly modify fretting regime behaviors compared to that of the non-coating condition. Crack propagation and coating fatigue are believed to be the predominant mechanism of particle detachment layer by layer.

Abstract:Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) possesses good lubricity properties, prompting numerous research work to explore their potential as lubricant additives. However, fully formulated lubricants consist of additive packages, which includes essential anti-wear agents, such as zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP). Adding FAME into a lubricant could lead to adverse tribological effects if the competitive molecular interaction between different additives are not well understood. Therefore, the present study determines the tribological impact of molecular interaction between ZDDP and methyl oleate along boundary lubrication regime. Lateral force microscopy, coupled with fluid imaging approach, is adopted, allowing for the analysis to focus on asperity level interaction. A silicon nitride tip is used to slide against a mirror-polished steel substrate while being fully submerged in the tested fluids. The tested fluids are mixtures of ZDDP and methyl oleate, blended at different volumetric percentages. It is observed that the lowest friction force is measured for ZDDP-methyl oleate mixture containing 70-vol% of methyl oleate. Interestingly, the friction force measured for such mixture is found to be lower than that of neat methyl oleate. This finding indicates that an optimum blending ratio between FAME and ZDDP is essential in achieving better boundary lubrication performance for tribological conjunctions.
Preparation, Characterization and Investigation of Molecular Films Coated on Diamond-Like Carbon Substrate

Abstract:For the successful application of boundary lubrication, detailed investigations about the influence of preparation process on molecular films are needed. In this paper, a specially designed device was used for the film preparation. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) combined with atomic force microscope (AFM) was employed to characterize the surface morphology and nanotribological behavior of molecular films. After the liquid phase deposition, molecular films are randomly and densely distributed over Ti-doped diamond-like carbon (Ti-DLC) substrates. Through rigorous surface treatments, island-like molecular films were finally achieved on substrate surfaces. The surface friction of molecular films is obviously lower than that of Ti-DLC surfaces. Then, pin-on-disk tribotests were performed to study the macrofriction behavior of molecular films under different preparation parameters. Based on the orthogonal experiment, the effect of five preparation parameters (solution weight percent, smearing force and processing time of three smearing steps) on initial friction coefficient of molecular films was investigated. The results indicated that the order of significance levels is as follows: processing time of the second smearing step > solution weight percent > processing time of step 1 > processing time of step 3 > smearing force. For the purpose of friction reduction, the appropriate level ranges are 0.75% (Solution), 2.5 N-15 N (Force), 1 min-10 min (Step 1), 1 min-2 min (Step 2) and 1 min, 2 min, 5 min and 15 min (Step 3). The initial friction coefficient under the optimized conditions is around 0.112, and the equilibrium friction coefficient is around 0.162, which is lower than that of unlubricated Ti-DLC substrates.

Abstract:Experimental investigations have been conducted to study the effects of surface topography on ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) chemical tribofilm formation during running-in stage under boundary lubrication conditions. The scope of presented work has been limited and focused on reciprocating motion under boundary lubrication to simulate the upper and lower dead centre of piston ring movement, which is prone to adhesive wear failure. Several surface topographies were designed and fabricated to measure, compare coefficient of friction and ZDDP critical time of tribofilm formation. Rubbing surfaces and their corresponding tribofilms were characterized by SEM and EDX. Mechanisms of surface topography effects on the critical time of ZDDP tribofilm formation is presented and discussed. Results from this study have demonstrated that the surface topography has a significant influence on the critical time of ZDDP tribofilm formation during running-in process and corresponding wear performance. This research provides an opportunity to augment anti-wear performance under boundary lubrication condition. This can be achieved by optimizing surface morphology design to influence the formation of anti-wear tribofilms during the running-in stage. In turn, this will result in interacting component’s service life enhancement and significant cost savings from mitigated wear.
