Abstract:The one-pot synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from glucose as a cheap feedstock under mild conditions continues to be challenging for the chemical industry. Herein, a solid acid-base bifunctional catalyst was prepared by the postsynthetic modification of MCM-41 mesoporous silica with 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane and subsequent anchoring of sulfanilic acid to its surface. A combination of N-2 sorption, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy studies proved that the ordered mesostructure of MCM-41 was preserved during the process of catalyst preparation. The as-synthesized catalyst was successful in the one-pot production of HMF from glucose in an aqueous medium. The influences of numerous reaction parameters on the HMF yield were examined in detail. In optimal circumstances, 89% HMF was obtained by glucose conversion at 100 degrees C and 120 min using 20 mg of catalyst. Remarkably, the catalyst was tested up to six recycles and demonstrated no observable drop in catalytic performance, indicating its potential for industry applications.

Abstract:This work presents experimental and kinetic modeling studies on fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the solution of mixed acetone and water, catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl). A reaction scheme that added an intermediate was proposed. A corresponding kinetic model that considered the parameters, including temperature (383-423 K), initial substrate concentration (10-100 g/L), and catalyst concentration (5-60 mmol/L), was established, and the influence of solvent ratio (3-19) was also studied. The maximum yield was 91% in the ideal plug flow reactor under the optimized condition (T = 383 K, C-F0 = 10 g/L, C-HCl = 10 mmol/L). The model can well support the delicate reactor design since an industrially accessible HMF production process was proposed in this work.

Abstract:We have developed an effective route for obtaining 5-hydroxymethylfurfural with a yield of 92.6 mol% from the dehydration of fructose in N,N-dimethylformamide using a mixture of AlCl3, H2SO4 and H3PO4 as catalyst. The NMR analysis showed the intermediate formed among fructose, AlCl3 and H3PO4 plays an important role in the novel result.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a crucial biobased compound for synthesizing chemicals and biofuels, but the direct conversion of glucose to HMF suffers low yield and purification problems. In this paper, a cheap and efficient deep eutectic solvent (DES) of choline chloride-chromium chloride (ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O) was developed to convert glucose and other carbohydrates to HMF. High HMF yields of 70.2, 78.6, 72.6, and 71.7% were achieved from glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, and sucrose, respectively. The DES ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O could be reused nine times without a significant loss of catalytic activity. In addition, a method was developed to regenerate humins-polluted DES. Combined with ultraviolet and visible spectrum data and density functional theory calculation, [Cr(H2O)(2)Cl(3)Ch](+) was identified as the active species in DES ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O. This paper proposed a new effective system to convert carbohydrates to HMF. The discovery of active species provides a base for future studies on dehydration mechanisms.
Synergetic Effect of Brønsted/Lewis Acid Sites and Water on the Catalytic Dehydration of Glucose to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural by Heteropolyacid‐Based Ionic Hybrids

Abstract:The effective dehydration of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has attracted increasing attention. Herein, a series of sulfonic-acid-functionalized ionic liquid (IL)-heteropolyacid (HPA) hybrid catalysts are proposed for the conversion of glucose to HMF. A maximum total yield of HMF and levoglucosan (LGA; approximate to 71 %) was achieved in the presence of pyrazine IL-HPA hybrid catalyst [PzS]H2PW in THF/H2O-NaCl (v/v 5:1). The mechanism of glucose dehydration was studied by tailoring the Bronsted/Lewis acid sites of the hybrid catalysts and altering the solvent composition. It was found that water and heteropolyanions have a significant effect on the reaction kinetics. Heteropolyanions are able to stabilize the intermediates and promote the direct dehydration of glucose and intermediate LGA to HMF. A small amount of water could facilitate the conversion of glucose to LGA and suppress the dehydration of LGA to levoglucosenone. In addition, the synergetic effect of Bronsted/Lewis acid sites and a little water was conducive to accelerated proton transfer, which improved the yield of HMF from glucose dehydration.

Abstract:The development of sustainable, efficient routes for conversion of glucose in biomass to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), an important green intermediate in the production of value-added chemicals and fuels, has emerged due to the need to replace depletion of non-renewable fossil sources and climate change caused by their use. In this study, we describe a highly efficient reaction system for the production of HMF with a combination of homogeneous catalyst and heterogeneous catalyst in a polar cosolvent. The catalyst system consists of activated carbon (AC) supported aluminum (AC-Al) and maleic acid (MA) dissolved in a mixture of water, acetonitrile (ACN) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Kinetic analysis of HMF production from glucose shows that carbon supported aluminum catalyst in combination with homogeneous maleic acid favored fructose dehydration to HMF instead of the formation of insoluble humins when compared to dissolved aluminum chloride and maleic acid in the same solvent. In addition, the rate constant of HMF hydrolysis to levulinic and formic acid was lower for AC-Al compared to dissolved Al. Response surface methodology (RSM), with central composite rotatable design (CCRD), identified the optimum conditions for glucose conversion to HMF as 168 °C for 11 min with a predicted molar yield of 50.3 mol%, which compared well to the experimentally verified yield of 45.8 mol% for these reaction conditions. To test the influence of glucose concentration on HMF yield, a range of initial glucose concentrations were examined. Results showed that the HMF yield increased with the decrease of weight percentage of glucose, suggesting that second order reactions result in humins formation.

Abstract:Glucose conversion to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) generally undergoes catalytic isomerization reaction by Lewis acids followed by the catalytical dehydration to HMF with Brönsted acid. In this work, a sulfonic acid functionalized metal‐organic framework MIL‐101(Cr)‐SO3H containing both Lewis acid and Brönsted acid sites, was examined as the catalyst for γ‐valerolactone‐mediated cascade reaction of glucose dehydration into HMF. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the batch heterogeneous reaction gave a HMF yield of 44.9% and selectivity of 45.8%. Reaction kinetics suggested that the glucose isomerization in GVL with 10 wt % water follows the second‐order kinetics with an apparent activation energy of 100.9 kJ mol−1. Continuous reaction in the fixed‐bed reactor showed that the catalyst is highly stable and able to provide a steady HMF yield. Abstract:The development of highly-efficient catalysts for conversion of glucose and fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is of great importance. In this work, theoretical simulations form the basis for rational design and synthesis of a superhydrophobic mesoporous acid, that can completely prevent HMF hydration, giving HMF as sole product from full conversion of fructose. Interestingly, the combined superhydrophobic solid acid and superhydrophilic solid base catalysts are very efficient for one-pot conversion of glucose to HMF, giving a yield as high as 95.4 %. The excellent catalytic data in the conversion of glucose to HMF is attributed to the unique wettabilities of the solid acid and base catalysts.

Abstract:Conversion of cellulosic biomass to renewable chemicals such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is of high current interest. Herein, we report a rare example of one-pot synthesis of HMF from glucose by tandem catalysis. The system is composed of a thermophilic glucose isomerase enzyme for glucose isomerization to fructose and a solid acid catalyst for fructose dehydration to HIVIF. A base (-NH2) fiinctionalized mesoporous silica (aminopropyl-FMS) with large pore size was deployed successfully to immobilize and protect the thermophilic glucose isomerase in organic solvents at high temperature. The combination of this catalyst with a Bronsted acid (-SO3H) functionalized mesoporous silica (propylsulfonic acid-FMS) allowed us to conduct a one-pot transformation of glucose to HMF directly in a monophasic solvent system composed of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and H2O (4:1 v/v) with 61% yield of fructose and 30% yield of HMF at temperatures >363 K in 24 h.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based solid acid, which was prepared by a facile and eco-friendly approach from glucose and p-toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH), was used to catalyze fructose dehydration into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for the first time and exhibits excellent catalytic performance. As high as 91.2% yield of HMF was achieved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 130 degrees C after only 1.5 h. Besides, this catalyst also displayed a good reusability.

Abstract:We report the catalytic conversion of glucose in high yields (62%) to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a versatile platform chemical. The reaction system consists of a Lewis acid metal chloride (e.g., AlCl3) and a Bronsted acid (HCl) in a biphasic reactor consisting of water and an alkylphenol compound (2-sec-butylphenol) as the organic phase. The conversion of glucose in the presence of Lewis and Bronsted acidity proceeds through a tandem pathway involving isomerization of glucose to fructose, followed by dehydration of fructose to HMF. The organic phase extracts 97% of the HMF produced, while both acid catalysts remain in the aqueous phase.
Direct Conversion of Glucose to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural over Zirconium Phosphate Catalyst in a Biphasic System

Abstract:Efficient and selective production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfuml (HMF) from glucose was achieved in the presence of zirconium phosphate (ZrPO) catalyst in a biphasic system. With the use of this catalyst, a high HMF yield of 56.8% was obtained from glucose in a water-tetrahydrofuran (THF) biphasic system. Characterization results showed that such catalyst had weak to strong acid sites and contained both Lewis and BrOnsted acid sites. The results of comparative experiments over some other solid acid catalysts demonstrated that the Lewis acid sites on the ZrPO catalyst played a crucial role in the isomerization of glucose to fructose and the Bronsted ones were active in the dehydration of generated fructose to HMF. Moreover, less levulinic acid (LA) and fonnic acid (FA) (0.5%) were detected in the reaction solution, indicating that this ZrPO catalyst exhibited high selectivity towards the formation of HMF. Furthermore, the ZrPO catalyst was very stable and could maintain its activity after being used for six times.

Abstract:5‐Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is one of the most important and versatile biomass‐derived platform chemicals for the synthesis of a wide range of industrial chemicals, including biofuels. HMF can be obtained by dehydration of glucose with acid catalysts. The conversion proceeds through two steps, that is, glucose–fructose isomerization and dehydration of fructose to HMF. During the first step, water plays an important role as a proton shuttle to promote the reaction and reduce the energy barriers, which results in the acceleration of the reaction. Besides, water can also block the side reaction. The role of water joining and catalyzing the reaction is further proved by experimental findings, that is, by using DMSO/D2O as solvent deuterium was found at C1 of HMF from NMR analysis.

Abstract:The conversion of abundant and inexpensive glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a critical step in the roadmap towards renewable biomass resources for production of fuel and key chemicals instead of fossil resource. A low-cost bifunctional solid acid catalyst capable of both isomerization and dehydration processes is essential for the success of this reaction route. To this end, in this paper, we present a novel porous carbon-based solid acid catalyst derived from bio-tar, functionalized by sulfonation and Al-Ti metal loading with structural regulation. We systematically investigated the influencing factors including reaction temperature, time, catalysts loading amount, and type of solvent during isomerization of glucose and the subsequent dehydration reactions. The synthesized catalyst (Al-Ti/SAPC) exhibited outstanding catalytic performance, converting 96.1% of glucose to 74.6% HMF under optimum conditions (140°C, 4 h, DMAO: H 2 O = 4:1, and 20 wt% NaCl). The cooperation of two types of acid sites was the primary contributor to this exceptional catalytic activity of Al-Ti/SAPC. When the ratio of DMSO to H 2 O was adjusted to 4:1, the problem of poor HMF selectivity in a single solvent could be significantly improved, and the hazard caused by excessive water in the system for glucose conversion could also be avoided. Additionally, a detailed kinetic model was developed to further elucidate the specific roles of the decorated acid sites during catalytic conversion of glucose. Overall, we established a highly cost-effective and efficient heterogeneous catalytic system for directed HMF production and provided a high-added approach to biomass waste for promising sustainable biomass utilization.

Abstract:A series of Lewis acidic metal salts were used for glucose dehydration to 5-hydroymethylfurfural (HMF) in water. Effect of valence state, ionic radii of Lewis acidic cation, and the type of anions on the catalytic performance have been studied systematically. The experimental results showed that the valence state played an important role in determining catalytic activity and selectivity. It was found that a higher glucose conversion rate and HMF selectivity could be obtained over high valent Lewis acid salts, where the ionic radii of these Lewis acidic metal salts are usually relatively small. Analysis on the effect of the anions of Lewis acid salts on the catalytic activity and the selectivity suggested that a higher glucose conversion and HMF selectivity could be readily obtained with Cl-. Furthermore, the recyclability of high valence state Lewis acid salt was also studied, however, inferior catalytic performance was observed. The deactivation mechanism was speculated to be the fact that high valence state Lewis acid salt was comparatively easier to undergo hydrolysis to yield complicated metal aqua ions with less catalytic activity. The Lewis acidic activity could be recovered by introducing a stoichiometric amount of hydrochloric acid (HCl) to the catalytic before the reaction.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and levulinic acid (LA) are two important platform compounds that can be produced by the dehydration of hexoses from hydrolysis of cellulose. In this study, glucose dehydration was catalyzed by the SO42-/ZrO2 catalyst in the NaCl-THF/H2O biphasic solvent system. Complete conversion of glucose was achieved at 160 degrees C. The highest HMF yield and LA yield were 61.84% and 29.68%, respectively. The results showed that the conversion and product distribution were influenced by catalyst acidity, solvent composition, temperature, and time. The SO42- load greatly changed the acidity of the catalyst, thus affecting the product distribution. By changing the composition of the catalyst and the biphasic solvent system, different yields of HMF and LA could be obtained, so as to realize directional synthesis of the target products.

Abstract:A two-step process combining the (equilibrium) glucose isomerization to fructose with selective dehydration of fructose in the obtained sugar mixture to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), where glucose is largely unconverted and recycled, represents an attractive concept to increase the overall efficiency for HMF synthesis. This work presents experimental and modelling studies on the conversion of such fructose-glucose mixture to HMF using the sulfuric acid catalyst in a water-methyl isobutyl ketone biphasic system under a wide range of conditions (e.g., temperature, catalyst and sugar concentrations). Through detailed product analyses and ESI-MS spectroscopy, the excess formation of formic acid (together with humins) by the direct sugar/HMF degradation was confirmed and included in the reaction network (neglected in most literatures). The kinetic modelling based on batch experiments in monophasic water well describes the measurements thereof, whereas distinct deviations were found in the prediction of typical literature kinetic models. The incorporation of HMF equilibrium extraction into the developed kinetic model, with consideration of phase volume change as a function of temperature and partial phase miscibility, enables to predict reaction results in the biphasic system in batch. This kinetic model allows to optimize conditions for HMF synthesis that are favored in continuous reactors with minimized back mixing. Based on the model implications, the biphasic system was optimized with slug flow microreactors to better address process intensification and scale-up aspects. Using a simulated fructose-glucose mixture feedstock to represent commercially available high fructose corn syrups, a maximum HMF yield of 81% was obtained at 155 °C over 0.05 M H2SO4 at a residence time of 16 min in the microreactor, with 96% fructose conversion and over 95% of glucose remaining unconverted.

The reaction of glucose dehydration to HMF was found to proceed under near-neutral conditions (pH = 5.5) and a moderately high yield of 42 mol % could be obtained. The combined catalytic system also showed effectiveness to convert other polysaccharides to HMF. Furthermore, the aqueous phase was recycled and used for multiple times without significant loss of catalytic performance.
