Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:Analytical pyrolysis-comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC × GC/MS) was used for the on-line analysis of pyrolysis vapors. Bio-based activated carbon (B-AC) catalysts were used to produce highly selectivity valuable chemicals such as furans and phenols. B-AC catalyst was subjected to several characterizations to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalyst and its relationship with products distribution. The results showed that B-AC catalyst showed high catalytic activity and selectivity for the production of furans and phenols under mild catalytic temperature (350 °C). Furans are mainly from pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose, while phenols are mainly from pyrolysis of lignin. Methylfurans and phenol were dominated compounds. With the use of B-AC, the relative peak area of methylfurans increased from 6.58% to 39.35% (cellulose), 0%–27.79% (xylan), 0.54%–26.82% (corncob); the relative peak area of phenol increased from 6.31% to 53.83% (lignin) and 2.77%–12.34% (corncob). A significant reduction of aldehydes, ketones, and sugars was also observed over B-AC catalyst. The higher total acidity (weak acidity and Lewis acidity) of B-AC favored the formation of 2-methylfuran and phenol.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to catalytically upgrade fast pyrolysis vapors of sawdust using various Fe-based catalysts for producing phenolic-rich bio-oil by analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) technique. A variety of parameters, including support characteristic, calcination temperature, pyrolysis temperature, as well as the catalyst-to-biomass ratio during the pyrolysis process were evaluated for their effects on product distribution of bio-oil. GC-MS analysis showed that compared to Fe–Mg and Fe–Al catalysts, the developed Fe–Ca catalyst significantly promoted the formation of phenols and its derivatives. The phenolic concentration declined with increasing calcination temperature and pyrolysis temperature, while increased monotonically along with increasing catalyst-to-biomass ratio. The phenolics concentration was high upto 81% (peak area) under optimum conditions of calcination temperature of 500 °C, pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C and catalyst-to-biomass ratio of 10. At higher catalyst-to-biomass ratio of 20, phenolics (88.03% in peak area) and hydrocarbons (including 7.86% of aromatics and 4.1% aliphatics) were the only two components that can be detected, with all the acids, aldehydes and ketones completely eliminated. This indicated the excellent capability of developed Fe–Ca catalyst in promoting the decomposition of lignin in biomass to generate phenolic compounds and meanwhile inhibiting the devolatilization of holocellulose.

Abstract:Carbon materials prepared by biomass pyrolysis have been studied for conversion of lignin into phenols . In this study, the control mechanism of free radicals on phenolic products selectivity was studied using guaiacol as a model chemical. The results showed that gaseous radicals or carbon-centered radicals of carbon materials could promote phenols formation through different mechanisms. In gas-phase system, the selectivity of phenols was mainly controlled by methyl radicals which led to a theoretical selectivity of phenols lower than 50%. In the heterogeneous system, methyl radicals and phenolic radicals were easily and rapidly adsorbed on the carbon edge sites. The o-hydroxyphenoxy radical was the key intermediate and was firstly absorbed on the carbon center radical sites where phenols produced at the same position after undergoing desorption and hydrogenation. In conclusion, the present study concluded that conversion of lignin to phenols can proceed rapidly as long as there are carbon-centered radicals distributed at zigzag edge on the carbon surface.

Abstract:A new technique was proposed to co-produce phenol and activated carbon (AC) from catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass impregnated with K3PO4 in a hydrogen atmosphere, followed by activation of the pyrolytic solid residues. Lab-scale catalytic fast pyrolysis experiments were performed to quantitatively determine the pyrolytic product distribution, as well as to investigate the effects of several factors on the phenol production, including pyrolysis atmosphere, catalyst type, biomass type, catalytic pyrolysis temperature, and catalyst impregnation content. In addition, the pyrolytic solid residues were activated to prepare ACs with high specific surface areas. The results indicated that phenol could be obtained due to the synergistic effects of K3PO4 and hydrogen atmosphere, with the yield and selectivity reaching 5.3 wt% and 17.8% from catalytic fast pyrolysis of poplar wood with 8 wt% K3PO4 at 550°C in a hydrogen atmosphere. This technique was adaptable to different woody materials for phenol production. Moreover, gas product generated from the pyrolysis process was feasible to be recycled to provide the hydrogen atmosphere, instead of extra hydrogen supply. In addition, the pyrolytic solid residue was suitable for AC preparation, using CO2 activation method, the specific surface area was as high as 1,605 m2/g.

Abstract:Biomass catalytic pyrolysis for valuable O-containing chemicals is a promising approach for better utilization of oxygen in biomass resource, where the catalyst, with the properties of green, low cost, high activity and stability, is a critical point. In this study, we proposed a novel and green method to produce phenols through biomass (bamboo wastes) catalytic pyrolysis with N-doped biochar catalyst, which was investigated in a fixed bed reactor to explore the catalytic pyrolysis mechanism of N-doped biochar catalyst. N-doped biochar catalysts, with different nitrogen content and specific surface area, were by products came from biomass N-enriched pyrolysis. Results showed that N-doped biochar catalyst greatly promoted the generation of phenols (reached 82%), especially valuable 4-vinyl phenol with 31% content and 6.65 wt% yield, as well as 16% 4-ethyl phenol with 3.04 wt% yield, based on biomass. It also promoted aromatics formation, while inhibited the generation of O-species and acetic acid with more CO2 and H2O release, thus greatly improved bio-oil quality. Furthermore, N-containing groups in N-doped biochar catalyst showed good stability, while O-containing groups decreased largely. N-doped biochar mainly acted as adsorbent, catalyst, and reactant during catalytic pyrolysis, and the possible catalytic pyrolysis mechanism was proposed based on experiment results and quantum calculations. In conclusion, N-doped biochar catalyst showed excellent catalytic property for biomass catalytic pyrolysis for phenols products.

Abstract:How to achieve high value modification of biomass through simple process and low cost is an important bottleneck in the development of biomass energy. In this study, hydrogen-rich syngas, phenol-rich bio-oil and high specific surface area nanostructured porous carbon materials were synthesized by one-step in situ catalytic pyrolysis at 500 °C. Composition and physicochemical property tests of the three-phase products showed that KOH promotes ring opening and bond breaking of macromolecules in the bio-oil, improves the directional selectivity of phenolic compounds, and generates more small molecule gases. Molten K + and water vapor etched the biomass to prepare porous carbon with high graphitization and rich pore structure and generate more H 2 . Further electrochemical characterization showed that the porous carbon material had good specific capacitance and cyclic stability. This study provides a new idea for the utilization of pyrolysis polygeneration technology of agroforestry biomass resources, and it is also of guiding significance for the research of high-value utilization of biomass resources.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Catalytic co‐pyrolysis of biomass with waste plastics can produce high‐quality chemicals, making it a potential alternative to fossil fuels. The production of aromatic‐rich oil was achieved in this work by catalytic the co‐pyrolysis of pine sawdust and LDPE using a series of biochar made using different preparation methods. ZnCl2 was employed to activate biochar during the preparation process, owing to its optimal activity for the co‐pyrolysis intermediates. The study compared the effects of biochar activated using different treatment methods on the yield and fractions of pine sawdust and LDPE co‐pyrolysis in a fast pyrolysis tube furnace at 650 °C. RESULTS The study indicates that the ZnCl2 biochar, prepared from pine sawdust by fast pyrolysis (F‐AC), exhibited the best aromatic catalytic activity. The selectivity to aromatic hydrocarbons was 72.53%, and the content of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) was 32.17%. CONCLUSION The Diels‐Alder reaction and aromatization were made more effective since to the Zn sites and large pore structure in F‐AC. Using FTIR, SEM, and XPS analysis, it was found that F‐AC contained more O‐containing groups in abundance, which improved its adsorption capacity for reaction intermediates. At the same time, the porous structure and high specific surface area of biochar provided a region for the reaction intermediate to interact with the active center containing O‐containing groups. This enhanced the synergy between biomass and plastics and raised the selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons. Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin to obtain value-added phenolic chemicals is a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for the efficient valorization of biomass derived wastes. Herein, an innovative approach by using a single-step microwave assisted depolymerization of lignin from birch sawdust without external hydrogen in the mixture of water-alcohol (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) co-solvents over commercial catalysts (Pd/C, Pt/C, Ru/C) was investigated. A 65 wt% yield of phenolic monomers was obtained based on 43.8 wt% of delignification (190 degrees C, 3 h). The solid residues retained 92.0 wt% of cellulose and 57.3 wt% of hemicellulose, which could be further used for fermentation or in the pulp industry. Analysis of the lignin oil revealed that in-situ hydrogen generated from methanol decomposition promoted the hydrogenolysis of beta-O-4 ether linkage and selective hydrogenation of unsaturated side-chains of phenolic monomers. This work introduces new perspec-tives for the efficient and cost-effective production of value-added phenolic compounds from lignin in agroindustrial wastes without external hydrogen assisted by microwave heating.
Neglected but Efficient Electron Utilization Driven by Biochar-Coactivated Phenols and Peroxydisulfate: Polyphenol Accumulation Rather than Mineralization.

Abstract:We report an unrecognized but efficient nonradical mechanism in biochar-activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) systems. Combining a newly developed fluorescence trapper of reactive oxygen species with steady-state concentration calculations, we showed that raising pyrolysis temperatures of biochar (BC) from 400 to 800 °C remarkably enhanced trichlorophenol degradation but inhibited the catalytic production of radicals (SO and OH) in water and soil, thereby switching a radical-based activation into an electron-transfer-dominated nonradical pathway (contribution increased from 12.9 to 76.9%). Distinct from previously reported PDS* complex-determined oxidation, Raman and electrochemical results of this study demonstrated that the simultaneous activation of phenols and PDS on the biochar surface triggers the potential difference-driven electron transfer. The formed phenoxy radicals subsequently undergo coupling and polymerization reactions to generate dimeric and oligomeric intermediates, which are eventually accumulated on the biochar surface and removed. Such a unique nonmineralizing oxidation achieved an ultrahigh electron utilization efficiency (/) of 182%. Through biochar molecular modeling and theoretical calculations, we highlighted the critical role of graphitic domains rather than redox-active moieties in lowering band-gap energy to facilitate electron transfer. Our work provides insights into outstanding contradictions and controversies related to nonradical oxidation and inspiration for more oxidant-saving remediation technologies.
Influence of the Feedstock on Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis with a Solid Acid Catalyst

Abstract:At RTI, we are developing a catalytic fast pyrolysis process with a new solid acid catalyst, the performance of which has been evaluated in a pilot-scale reactor using loblolly pine. More robust technology development requires a deeper understanding of the influence of the feedstock properties of process performance defined by the organic liquid yield and composition. Seven types of woody and herbaceous biomass were tested in a 2.54 cm diameter fluidized-bed reactor. This study shows that the product distribution and biocrude composition vary widely with different feedstocks. The yield of organic biocrude is in the range of 14.0-20.8 wt% for the tested feedstocks. The yields of incondensable gases and carbonaceous solids vary significantly from feedstock to feedstock, which may be because of the variation of the ash content in the feedstock. A feedstock with a higher ash content generates more gases; specifically more CO2 but not necessarily more CO. The chemical composition, which includes lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose, also affects the biocrude composition and the yield of gases. We also demonstrated a positive correlation between the cellulose content and CO yield and a negative correlation between the hemicellulose content and CO yield.
Microwave-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass for production of phenolic-rich bio-oil

Abstract:Catalytic microwave pyrolysis of peanut shell (PT) and pine sawdust (PS) using activated carbon (AC) and lignite char (LC) for production of phenolic-rich bio-oil and nanotubes was investigated in this study. The effects of process parameters such as pyrolysis temperature and biomass/catalyst ratio on the yields and composition of pyrolysis products were investigated. Fast heating rates were achieved under microwave irradiation conditions. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of bio-oil showed that activated carbon significantly enhanced the selectivity of phenolic compounds in bio-oil. The highest phenolics content in the bio-oil (61.19 %(area)) was achieved at 300°C. The selectivity of phenolics in bio-oil was higher for PT sample compared to that of PS. The formation of nanotubes in PT biomass particles was observed for the first time in biomass microwave pyrolysis.

Abstract:To recover valuable products from biomass, bifunctional catalysts (N-Fe/BC) capable of microwave absorption and oriented production of phenolics were prepared by a one-pot method involving the microwave-induced K2FeO4. Its catalytic performances were evaluated, and the catalytic mechanism was explored using a model compound and DFT calculations. The cycle performance and deactivation mechanism were investigated. N-Fe/BC possessed a large S BET value (265.21 m2 g–1), good pore distribution, and abundant Fe and N species, resulting in good dielectric and catalytic properties. After catalysis, the heating rates reached 63.78–107.84 °C min–1, and the selectivity and yield of phenol-enriched bio-oil improved significantly, reaching maximum values of 80.28% and 38.09 wt % at 550 °C with 20 wt % N-Fe/BC, respectively. Model compound experiments and DFT calculations showed that N-Fe/BC directionally generated phenolics by changing the reaction path and forming “hot spots” that stimulated the catalytic reforming of oxygen-containing compounds. The catalytic performance decreased slightly after five cycles, due to active site loss, carbon deposition, and pore collapse.

Abstract:As an indispensable by-product of thermal conversion process, biochar can be modified to achieve outstanding performance in many applications. In particular, it has favorable properties for catalytic pyrolysis due to its advantageous porous structure and abundant surface functional groups. In the present study, the ecological impact of activated biochar obtained from phaeophyte Hizikia fusiformis was evaluated using life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. Subsequently, activated biochar was employed as a catalyst during pyrolysis of waste sawdust for monophenols recovery. Concretely, activated biochar was prepared from H. fusiformis in a fixed bed reactor through a two-step activation method. Results of LCA showed that employment of KOH has the highest environmental burdens in all steps for all studied impact categories. In addition, it was found that employment of KOH as an activator resulted in lower greenhouse gas emissions than other activated biochars. During catalytic pyrolysis process, the biochar-based catalyst was confirmed to facilitate the dehydration, decarbonylation, and decarboxylation reactions, resulting in more gaseous components. In addition, the content of -OH was found to decrease after catalytic process, while the content of C-O-C increased. According to GC-MS analysis, it was found that activated biochar catalyst significantly promotes the yields of monophenols (reached up to 48.99%), which were mainly ascribed to the porous structure and the surface functional groups, i.e. mesopores structure and pyridinic-N, respectively.

Abstract:To enhance the quality of raw bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of biomass, hydrogen-rich reactants such as waste plastics, cooking oils, and soap stock are frequently incorporated into the fast catalytic co-pyrolysis (co-CFP) of biomass. Nevertheless, widespread uses of acids, bases, and zeolite catalysts must address concerns such as easy to coke, regeneration challenges, and environmental impacts. In this study, one green carbon catalyst is derived from nanocellulose (NCCC) and then firstly applied to co-pyrolyze the Douglas Fir (DF), a typical lumber species in North America, together with low-density polyethylene (LDPE), a commonly used plastic. The use of NCCC during feedstock co-pyrolysis boosted the formation of aromatics, particularly the mono-aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) in bio-oil and H 2 -rich gaseous products, with a selectivity of H 2 to 65 vol.%, nearly double the selectivity without catalysts. Even after five consecutive applications, the NCCC still displays good catalytic effectiveness in the co-pyrolysis: its selectivity for H 2 in gaseous products (48 area%) after five-time usage is virtually equal to that without catalysts (46 area%). Abstract:In this study, three types of hydrothermal char-supported metal nanoparticle composites (HCM-Fe, HCM-Co, and HCM-Ni) were prepared using pinewood as the raw material via an ion hydrothermal pretreatment followed by microwave heating method, which were then served as both catalysts and microwave absorbers to enhance the rapid pyrolysis of pine wood particles for the selective preparation of phenols-rich bio-oil. The combined effects of hydrothermal carbonization and microwave heating enriched the pore structure of the composite surface, yielding ordered carbon structures such as carbon microspheres, carbon nanotubes, and graphite layers. Also, metal nanoparticles were generated and uniformly anchored on the hydrothermal char matrix by the graphite layers. The three types of hydrothermal carbon-based catalysts exhibit excellent microwave absorption performance, facilitating rapid heating of pine particles at a rate as fast as 5.49 °C/s. Among these catalysts, HCM-Co demonstrates the best catalytic performance, efficiently promoting the cleavage of the β -O-4 bond in lignin and achieving a liquid product yield of 38.4 % at 500 °C. The resulting bio-oil is characterized by its richness in phenolic compounds, accounting for 54.9 % of its composition, and partial mitigation of acidity.

Abstract:The utilization of biomass pyrolysis is a crucial approach for sustainable development. This study used the typical biomass of pine (PI), rice husk (RH), and corn straw (ST) as feedstocks to evaluate the pyrolysis mechanisms, features and conversion mechanisms of the phenol tar product. The phenolic gaseous products were more trailing in ST, which mostly concentrated around 320-500 °C. Primary phenol tar is produced from lignin through the homolytic cleavage of β-O and α-O, and C-C bond breakage, primarily occurring before 550 °C. As the degree of aromatization increases, the oxygenates progressively deoxygenate, and the primary tar demethoxylates to form secondary tar as the temperature increases. The pyrolysis of cellulose produces H radicals, which aid the transformation of lignin into phenol tar. This study can provide a theoretical basis for biomass pyrolysis to select the appropriate process parameters to improve the quality of bio-oil and regulate phenol tar products.

Abstract:We report a sustainable strategy to cleanly address biomass waste with high-value utilization. Phenol-rich bio-oil is selectively produced by direct pyrolysis of biomass waste corn straw (CS) without use of any catalyst in a microwave device. The effects of temperature and power on the yield and composition of pyrolysis products are investigated in detail. Under microwave irradiation, a very fast pyrolysis rate and bio-oil yield as high as 46.7 wt.% were obtained, which were competitive with most of the previous results. GC-MS analysis showed that temperature and power (heating rate) had great influences on the yield of bio-oil and the selectivity of phenolic compounds. The optimal selectivity of phenols in bio-oil was 49.4 area% by adjusting the operating parameters. Besides, we have made detailed statistics on the change trend of some components and different phenols in bio-oil and given the law and reason of their change with temperature and power. The in situ formed highly active biochar from CS with high content of potassium (1.34 wt.%) is responsible for the improvement of phenol-rich oils. This study offers a sustainable way to fully utilize biomass waste and promote the achievement of carbon neutrality.

Production of Phenolic Compounds from Bagasse Lignin via Catalytic Pyrolysis of Ca1-xPrxFeO3

Abstract:A series of calcium ferrite oxides with different loading of praseodymium(Ca1-xPrxFeO3, CPF-x ) was synthesized by sol-gel method. The calcination mechanism was optimized, its catalytic pyrolysis effect on bagasse lignin( BL) was evaluated, and its regeneration performance was investigated. The results showed that the suitable synthesis and calcination parameters of CPF-x were as follows : x = 0.5, the calcination temperature was 800 degrees C, and the calcination time was 6 h. The CPF-0.5-800-6 obtained under this condition presented cubic crystal phase, porous structure, and the specific surface area increased by nearly 3 times with the addition of Pr into CaFeO3. The optimal technological parameters for catalytic pyrolysis of BL by CPF-0.5-800-6 were as follows : m(CPF-0.5-800-6) m(BL) was 1 3, the pyrolysis temperature was 650 degrees C, and the liquid phase yield was up to 20. 73%. The main phenolic compounds are syringols, phenolics and guaiacols typed compounds. The total selectivity was 63.21%. The selectivity of syringols increased from 20.60% to 29.59% with CPF-0.5-800-6 as catalyst. The selectivity of a certain phenol compound in BL catalytic pyrolysis was improved. CPF-0.5-800-6 still has nice selectivity and structural stability even after 5 catalytic pyrolysis and regeneration cycles.
