Abstract:Operators' mental models play a central role in safety-critical domains like the chemical process industries. Accurate mental models, i.e., a correct understanding of the process and its causal linkages, are prerequisites for safe operation. Mental models are often defined and explained in abstract terms that make their interpretation subjective and prone to bias. In this work, we propose a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based formalism to characterize control room operators' mental models while handling abnormal situations. We show that a suitable HMM representing the operator's mental model – including the states, state transition probabilities, and emission probability distributions – can be identified experimentally using data of the operator's control actions, eye gaze, and process variable values. This HMM can be used for the quantitative assessment of operators' mental models as illustrated using various case studies. We discuss the potential applications of the model in identifying various cognitive errors and human reliability assessment. In Part 2 of this paper, we use the proposed approach to assess operators' learning during training.

Abstract:It was held that after the introduction of digitalized technology for main control room in nuclear power plant,the way operators perform situation assessment tasks was dramatically changed,and that the potential human factor issues arising from digitalization needed to be identified,and their effects on operators' situation assessment must be evaluated.Based on Adam's perception/action cycle theory and Norman's resource-limited theory,and taking Bayesian network as an inference method,a structured causal model for analyzing the effects of digitalization on situation assessment was built.It not only revealed the mechanisms the human factor issues affected situation assessment,but also prioritized their influences quantitatively.The results indicate that interface management tasks and task load transition influence the reliability of situation assessment significantly.In order to improve the margin of safety for digitalized nuclear power plant,corresponding measures were proposed.

Abstract:Abstract The main control room of the nuclear power plant is a complex human-machine tightly coupled system with frequent human-machine interactions, resulting in a high percentage of accidents/incidents due to operator factors. High temperature gas-cooled reactors adopt a multi-module design, with multiple reactor modules driving a single turbine. As a result, future high temperature gas cooled reactor - pebble-bed module nuclear power plants (HTR-PM) may require a single operator to monitor two or more nuclear steam supply system (NSSS), which may introduce new human factor safety issues. The rationality and ease of use of the human-machine interface (HMI) can reduce the cognitive load and the probability of error of the operator and ensure the safe operation of the nuclear power plant. In this paper, we conducted experiments on the HTR-PM600 simulator to simulate the main control room operator’s patrol task on two types of interfaces. And we simulate the cognitive behavior of operators in the above tasks based on the queuing network-model human processor (QN-MHP) method. The results of the simulations and experiments show that the QN-MHP method can well model the cognitive behavior of the nuclear power plant main control room operator. Moreover, the optimized HMI significantly reduces the operator’s task completion time and cognitive load, which proves that the QN-MHP method can support the optimization of HMI in nuclear power plants.

Abstract:In this study, our focus lies on the issue of optimal load frequency control (LFC) in a multi-area interconnected power system. A shared control strategy that incorporates knowledge of human operational behavior is proposed. Given the difficulty in obtaining analytical models of operators, a Gaussian process regression is introduced to construct a data-driven model for operator behaviors. To improve the performance of the multi- area interconnected power system, a shared control approach with an operational model is presented, which integrates grid state information and operator instructions. Specifically, a GP-MPC is designed to predict the system states by propagating uncertainty and obtain an optimal control profile within the prediction horizon. Several experiments are conducted to validate the efficiency of the proposed shared control approach.
Total simulation of operator team behavior in emergencies at nuclear power plants

Abstract:In a large and complex system (i.e., a space aeronautics and nuclear power plant) it would be valuable to conduct operator training and support to demonstrate standard operators' behavior in coping with an anomaly caused by multiple malfunctions in which procedures would not have been stipulated previously. A system simulating operator team behavior including individual operator's cognitive behavior, his operations and physical behavior, and even verbal communication among team members, has been developed for a typical commercial nuclear power plant. This simulation model is not a scenario-based system but a complete knowledge-based system, based on the mental model that was envisaged by detailed analyses of experimental results obtained in the full-scope plant simulator. This mental model is composed of a set of knowledge bases and rules able to generate both diagnosis and prognosis depending on the observed situation even for multiple malfunctions. Simulation results of operator team behavior and plant dynamics were compared with corresponding experiments in several anomalies of multiple malfunctions. The comparison showed a reasonable agreement, so the simulation conditions were varied on cognitive task processing speed of individual operators, on team role sharing scheme, and on human machine interface (1st generation to 2nd generation control panel) to assess the sensitivity of this simulation model. Finally, it was shown that this simulation model has applications for the use of training standards and computer aided operator support systems.

Abstract:For multi-modular nuclear power plants under the scheme of multiple nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) modules driving a single steam turbine, the NSSS modules are coupled tightly with each other by the common turbine, giving more complex normal operation with respect to the single-modular plants. To limit the operation cost of multi-modular plants, one operator is assigned to monitor and control two or more modules, whose feasibility should be verified. Combined with the characteristics of multi-module control rooms and multi-module running tasks, this paper designs a comprehensive situation awareness measurement method that combines SART, NASA-TLX (NASA Task Load Index), and eye movement tracking methods. The SART, NASA-TLX, and gaze entropy are adopted to measure the operators’ SA, and a series of accident handling experiments are performed on a full-scale simulator to gain enough data for analysis. The operators’ eye trajectories on the human–machine interface (HMI) during the experiments are all recorded for calculating the gaze entropy. Both the SART and NASA-TLX scales are filled by the operators after finishing the experiments. The experiment results show that the difference in operators’ workload and SA amongst all the experimental scenarios is limited, even between the toughest and tenderest scenarios, indicating the feasibility of one operator driving two NSSS modules simultaneously.

Abstract:While much research has investigated the predictors of operators’ performance such as personality, attitudes and motivation in high-risk industries, its cognitive antecedents and boundary conditions have not been fully investigated. Based on a multilevel investigation of 312 nuclear power plant main control room operators from 50 shift teams, the present study investigated how general mental ability (GMA) at both individual and team level can influence task and safety performance. At the individual level, operators’ GMA was predictive of their task and safety performance and this trend became more significant as they accumulated more experience. At the team level, we found team GMA had positive influences on all three performance criteria. However, we also found a “big-fish-little-pond” effect insofar as team GMA had a relatively smaller effect and inhibited the contribution of individual GMA to workers’ extra-role behaviors (safety participation) compared to its clear beneficial influence on in-role behaviors (task performance and safety compliance). The possible mechanisms related to learning and social comparison processes are discussed.

Abstract:Part II of this study aims to provide detailed, diagnostic information about the complexity difference between conventional and digital main control rooms (MCRs) in nuclear power plants. Complexity factors were classified according to task components and complexity dimensions. The effects of operator experience and plant type on complexity factors were statistically analyzed from three levels, i.e., task components, complexity dimensions, and individual factors. Interface management complexity factors were compared with other factors in digital MCRs. The results suggest that generally operator experience had effects on several task components and complexity dimensions only in abnormal/emergency situations. Plant type affected several task component and complexity dimensions in both abnormal emergency and normal situations. Complexity factors in the affected task components and complexity dimensions had higher frequency, complexity, or impact in digital MCRs than those in conventional MCRs. Factors related to crew activity and the dimensions of overabundance, temporal demand, and variability had relatively high frequency, complexity, or impact. Compared with other factors, interface management complexity factors had marginally higher frequency, but significantly lower complexity and impact.Relevance to industry: This study quantitatively addresses the complexity difference between conventional and digital MCRs in detail. It may provide rich information for how to improve operator working environments in NPPs. It may also contribute to other applied domains, such as human reliability analysis and interface design. Identifying Key Performance Shaping Factors in Digital Main Control Rooms of Nuclear Power Plants: A Risk-Based Approach

Abstract:Various human reliability analysis (HRA) methods use performance shaping factors (PSFs) to model operator performance. The tendency in HRA is to increase the number of PSFs. However, using many PSFs may negatively affect the quality of HRA outcomes. An elite-set PSF model with key PSFs is lacking. We therefore suggest a risk-based approach for identifying the key PSFs by ranking their risks to operator performance. In this approach, we elicit nuclear power plant (NPP) operators' perceptions of the frequency and impact of PSF indicators in main control rooms (MCRs), quantify the perceived risk scores of PSFs by multiplying their perceived frequency and impact, and classify PSF risk levels according to the suggested PSF risk matrix. Licensed operators (N= 33) from a digital NPP MCR participated in our survey. The top-ranked PSFs in terms of perceived risk score and the PSFs at the High Risk level were identified as the key PSFs from the surveyed NPP MCR. A comparison with other studies indicates that the importance of these key PSFs has been previously recognized, implying that the risk-based approach can yield meaningful results for ranking and identifying the key PSFs. Abstract:Operator training is critical to ensure safe operation in safety-critical domains such as chemical process industries. Training enhances the operator's understanding of the process, which is then encapsulated as mental models. Typically, the operator's learning in traditional training programs is assessed using expert judgment or in terms of process- and operator action-based metrics. These assessment schemes, however, ignore the cognitive aspects of learning, such as mental model development and cognitive workload. The HMM-based model proposed in Part 1 offers a systematic way to quantify operators' cognition during abnormalities. In this Part 2, we show that the cognitive behaviors displayed by expert operators can be represented as target values on the HMM's state transitions and emission probability distributions. Further, we propose two axioms of learning that can capture the evolution of the operator's mental models as they learn the causal relationships in the process and gain expertise in handling abnormal situations. We validate the proposed axioms by conducting training experiments involving 10 participants performing 486 tasks. Our results reveal that the axioms can accurately assess the progress of operators' learning.

Abstract:There are two kinds of cognitive tasks in digitized control room,including task of directly monitoring and controlling on system state(the primary task) and interface management task.Competing for cognitive resources between these tasks results in the lower efficiency of operator performance.For reducing the operating errors,this article addresses the effects of interface management task on operator and the potential errors of these effects based on analyzing their relationship.According to these effects and factors,we provide improving measures for the nuclear safety from the perspective of cognitive psychology.

Abstract:The modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plant adopts an innovative "multi-modules with one turbine" power generation structure. Due to complex process mechanism, strict operation conditions, and lack of practical operation experience of the new technique, how to keep the power plant safe, stable, economical and efficient becomes an urgent problem to be solved. In this paper, a real-time optimization strategy based on mechanism model is adopted, an object-oriented modeling strategy is used to construct a modular equation oriented first principles model of nuclear power plant, a systematic multi-parameters simultaneous estimation method and sensitivity analysis method are used in parameter modification and model reconstruction during the optimization process. Based on previous work, a trust region framework is introduced to ensure the local calculation accuracy of the model. Finally, the article validates the effectiveness of the real-time optimization strategy through significant load changes in modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plant.

Abstract:Nuclear plant modeling and control is an important subject in nuclear power engineering, giving the dynamic model from process mechanics and/or operational data as well as guaranteeing satisfactory transient and steady-state operational performance by well-designed plant control laws. With the fast development of small modular reactors (SMRs) and in the context of massive integration of intermittent renewables, it is required to operate the nuclear plants more reliably, efficiently, flexibly and smartly, motivating the recent exciting progress in nuclear plant modeling and control. In this paper, the main progress during the last several years in dynamical modeling and control of nuclear plants is reviewed. The requirement of nuclear plant operation to the subject of modeling and control is first given. By categorizing the results to the aspects of mechanism-based, data-based and hybrid modeling methods, the advances in dynamical modeling are then given, where the modeling of SMR plants, learning-based modeling and state-observers are typical hot topics. In addition, from the directions of intelligent control, nonlinear control, online control optimization and multimodular coordinated control, the advanced results in nuclear plant control methods are introduced, where the hot topics include fuzzy logic inference, neural-network control, reinforcement learning, sliding mode, feedback linearization, passivation and decoupling. Based upon the review of recent progress, the future directions in nuclear plant modeling and control are finally given.

Abstract:Based on the working tasks of an operator being taken into full consideration in this paper, on the one hand the table of measuring psychological characteristics is designed through the selection of special dimensions; on the other hand the table of performance appraisal is drafted through the choice of suitable standards of an operator. The paper analyzes the results of two aspects, sets relevant nuclear power plant operators as the research objective, and obtains the psychological characteristics and performance relativity of operators. The research can be as important and applied reference for the selection, evaluation and use of operators.

Abstract:The digital control system (DCS)+state-oriented procedure (SOP) system adopted by China's Ling'ao Phase II nuclear power plant's main control room requires changes to the cognitive process, behavior mode, and error mode while triggering new human factors. Therefore, in this paper we present a cognitive reliability model for the DCS+SOP system in the Ling'ao Phase II Nuclear Power Plant's main control room and conduct a human reliability analysis. The model is based on the cognitive process with respect to considering the coordinator's accident recovery effect and obtaining the method of calculating cognitive reliability. We determine impact factors for the three cognitive stages of the operator's and the coordinator's diagnosis, decision making, and operation. We obtain the operator's and the coordinator's weights for each process through an analytic hierarchy process. Using methods of simulation and analyzing the experiment data, we obtain revised coefficients for the cognitive reliability model. Additionally, the trend of the simulation curve indicates the rationality of the model. Finally, we provide an example based on the proposed cognitive reliability model. The process of analyzing the example demonstrates that this method provides a feasible analysis method for the cognitive reliability of the DCS+SOP system in the main control room.

Abstract:The nuclear system with multiple small modular reactors is a promising solution to realize the economics as well as maintain the safety features. The control room of the nuclear power plant with multiple SMRs is different with current pressured water reactors, these differences may have potential to impact human performance. These differences include the function analysis and function allocation, the staffing level and the staffing responsibilities, human machine interface design, situation awareness support, etc. This paper makes a review of the human factor engineering issues associated with the control room design of the plant with multiple SMRs. Some strategies are presented based on the experiences of the two-modular design of the high temperature gas-cooled pebble-bed modules (HTR-PM).

Abstract:Human plays an important role in sophisticated and safety-critical systems such as Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). Digital systems are applied in the control room alongside the development of technology. Operators in the control room of NPPs can interact with the system through traditional consoles as well as computer workstations. In order to evaluate the design of human-system interface, measures can be taken by assessing the task results and human performance. By observing the behaviors of operators, evaluators can identify potential problems of Human-System Interface (HSI) and thus making improvement. This paper briefly summarizes issues of human activities and performance assessment in NPPs, and then discusses the relationship between human behavior and HSI design. It provides some recommendations on interface design based on the observation of human activities in the control room, such as working on traditional panels and workstations, communication, and auxiliary activities. Discussions are then made on the objectives of evaluation and conditions of HSI evaluation in China nuclear industry. The corresponding experiences can be generalized to human-system interface design in other systems.

Abstract:In nuclear power plants, many accidents are caused by human errors. As a result, to be vigilant about the risks during human-machine interaction (HMI) is becoming critical. An effective HMI system can reduce the operators' workload and feedback the operators' status in real time, thus it will greatly reduce these risks. Based on this, it is necessary to discuss the topic of HMI in nuclear power control. In this work, the authors review the development of nuclear power interaction system and briefly analyze the current limitations. Then the paper summarizes the explorations in nuclear power HMI based on artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years, and conceive a multi-modal intelligent nuclear power control room. The authors believe that people want to improve the efficiency and accuracy of nuclear power HMI, it is important to apply new interaction methods and improve the evaluation system for the operating system.
