Abstract:Hereby, one kind of facile carbon dots (CDs) from hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) has been successfully provided, which obviously emitted blue fluorescence. With the related characterizations in detail, the CDs prepared here mainly consisted of C and O, owing to the functional groups of–OH and C=O on their surfaces. Likewise, the CDs also showed multiple advantages, including excellent photostability, superior dispersity and desirable stability. Moreover, the CDs were applied for sensing ciprofloxacin due to forming complexes with ciprofloxacin, thus leading to the fluorescence quenching of CDs. This proposed method was permitted to sense ciprofloxacin in a linear range of 10 nM L^–1–90 μM L^–1, suggesting that it may broaden the sensing ways for assaying ciprofloxacin.
Fluorescent Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-Doped Carbon Dots from Casein and Their Applications for Sensitive Detection of Hg2+ and Biothiols and Cellular Imaging.

Abstract:Fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were synthesized by a one-step pyrolysis strategy using casein as carbon, nitrogen and sulfur sources, and characterized by UVevis spectrum, fluorescent spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FT-IR, etc. The synthesized NSCDs displayed a blue emission under ultraviolet illumination with a quantum yield of 31.8%, and a good aqueous solubility, photostability and biocompatibility. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of NSCDs could be selectively quenched by Hg2+, so NSCDs was used as an effective probe for the detection of Hg2+. The linear range and the limit of detection (LOD) of the fluorescent sensor based on NSCDs for the detection of Hg2+ were 0.01-0.25 mu M and 6.5 mu M, respectively. Spiked water samples were detected by the sensor with the recovery of 95.4-106.3% and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.6-8.6%. It was also observed that the quenched NSCDs-Hg2+ system could be restored by the addition of biothiols such as L-cysteine (Lcy), homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH), thus NSCDs-Hg2+ system was employed as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of biothiols. The linear range and LOD of the NSCDs-Hg2+ system were 1-10 mM and 23.6 nM for Lcy, 0.2-2.5 mM and 12.3 nM for Hcy, and 0.1-2.0 mM and 16.8 nM for GSH, respectively. The NSCDs-Hg2+ system was applied for the detection of biothiols in serum samples with satisfied results. In addition, the study in vitro imaging HeLa cells revealed that the synthesized NSCDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in cellular imaging without noticeable cytotoxicity. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have garnered extensive interest in basic physical chemistry as well as in biomedical applications due to their low cost, good biocompatibility, and great aqueous solubility. However, the synthesis of multi-functional carbon dots has always been a challenge for researchers. Here, we synthesized novel CDs with a high quantum yield of 28.2% through the straightforward hydrothermal method using Diaminomaleonitrile and Boc-D-2, 3-diaminopropionic acid. The size, chemical functional group, and photophysical properties of the CDs were characterized by TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV, and fluorescence. It was demonstrated in this study that the prepared CDs have a high quantum yield, excellent photostability, and low cytotoxicity. Regarding the highly water-soluble property of CDs, they were proven to possess selective and sensitive behavior against Cu2+ ions (linear range = 0-9 μM and limit of detection = 1.34 μM). Moreover, the CDs were utilized in fluorescent ink in anti-counterfeiting measures. Because of their low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, the CDs were also successfully utilized in cell imaging. Therefore, the as-prepared CDs have great potential in fluorescence sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and bioimaging.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have been identified as potential nanosensors and attracted tremendous research interests in wide areas including anti-counterfeiting, environmental and biological sensing and imaging in considering of the attractive optical properties. In this work, we present a CDs based fluorescent sensor from polyvinylpyrrolidone, citric acid, and methionine as precursors by hydrothermal approach. The selective quantifying of Fe 3+ and ascorbic acid (AA) are based on the fluorescent on-off-on process, in which the fluorescent quenching is induced by the coordination of the Fe 3+ on the surface of the CDs, while the fluorescence recovery is mainly attributed to redox reaction between Fe 3+ and AA, breaking the coordination and bringing the fluorescence back. Inspired by the good water solubility and biocompatibility, significant photostability, superior photobleaching resistance as well as high selectivity, sensitivity, and interference immunity, which are constructed mainly from the N,S-doping and methionine surface functionalization, the CDs have not only been employed as fluorescence ink in multiple anti-counterfeiting printing and confidential document writing or transmitting, but also been developed as promising fluorescence sensors in solution and solid by CDs doped test strips and hydrogels for effectively monitoring and removing of Fe 3+ and AA in environmental aqueous solution. The CDs have been also implemented as effective diagnostic candidates for imaging and tracking of Fe 3+ and AA in living cells, accelerating the understanding of their function and importance in related biological processes for the prevention and treatment specific diseases.

Abstract:The conventional hydrothermal bottom-up synthesis for preparing carbon dots (CDs) usually requires stringent conditions and high energy consumption, whereas the quantum yield (QY) of CDs remains at a relatively low level. Herein, CDs exhibiting strong blue photoluminescence (PL) with an ultra-high QY (up to 94.4%) were prepared via a simple one-step microwave-assisted route using citric acid (CA) and o-phenylenediamine (o-PD) as precursors. The operating conditions, including reaction time, solvent species, amount of solvent, and precursor molar ratio, were optimized. The CDs synthesized within 3.5 min of microwave heating in ethylene glycol (EG) at a CA-to-PD molar ratio of 5:1 exhibited the highest QY (94.4%). A synergistic PL mechanism of the molecule state and carbon core state emissive centers was proposed according to the characterization results of CDs. Moreover, the proof-to-concept H2O2 fluorescent detection performances of the prepared CDs confirmed their great application potential as probe materials. Through directly mixing the CD products and H2O2, a strong PL response could be rapidly detected after merely 1 min, and the detection limit was calculated to be as low as 8.6 nM. Besides, the CDs exhibited high biocompatibility, making them suitable for in-vivo detection of H2O2. Therefore, this work provides a novel and efficient approach for synthesis of ultra-high QY CDs that can be directly applied in biological detection.
Preparation of Microcrystalline Cellulose-Derived Carbon Dots as a Sensor for Fe3+ Detection

Abstract:In this article, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were prepared by a hydrothermal method using microcrystalline cellulose as the carbon source and polyethylenimine as the nitrogen source. The ratio of microcrystalline cellulose to polyethylenimine added exerted a great influence on the fluorescence quantum yield of N-CDs. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs 2 was significantly affected by the solvent type and pH value, but not influenced by the time of irradiation with the UV lamp. Intriguingly, N-CDs 2 could be applied to temperature sensing (30~70 °C). With the addition of Fe3+ (20 ppm), the fluorescence of N-CDs 2 was greatly quenched, and the quenching rate reached 82.84%. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs 2 showed a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.995) with Fe3+ concentrations (0~14 ppm), and they achieved a limit of detection of 0.21 ppm. In addition, N-CDs 2 could also effectively detect Fe3+ in real water samples, showing a good recovery rate (98.25%~102.75%) and low relative standard deviation (less than 3%). According to the fluorescence lifetime data, the fluorescence quenching of N-CDs by Fe3+ might be a static process.

Abstract:In the present study, novel β-cyclodextrin doped carbon dots (CCDs) were prepared via a simple one-pot hydrothermal method at a mild temperature (140 °C), using mixtures of β-cyclodextrin and citric acid as precursors. By characterizing the chemical properties of CCDs prepared at 140 °C and 180 °C, the importance of low-temperature reaction for preservation of the specific structure of β-CD was elucidated. The CCDs showed excellent optical properties and were stable to changes in pH, ionic strength and light irradiation. Since the fluorescence of the CCDs could be selectively quenched by isoniazid (INZ) through specific host–guest recognition effects, a convenient isoniazid fluorescence sensor was developed. Under the optimal conditions, the sensor exhibited a relatively low detection limit of 0.140 μg mL −1 and a wide detection range from 0.2 μg mL −1 to 50 μg mL −1 for INZ detection. Furthermore, the sensor was employed successfully for the determination of INZ in urine samples with satisfactory recovery (91.1–109.5%), displaying potential in clinical applications. Finally, low cytotoxicity of the prepared CCDs was confirmed using the CCK-8 method, followed by application in HepG2 cell imaging.

Abstract:In this study, a facile synthesis of two ionized carbon dots (CDs-2 and CDs-3) is reported, in which different ionic pairs are formed at the surface of the carbon core. In contrast to CDs-3, the accumulation of carbon core can be clearly observed in the TEM image of CDs-2. This is due to the linkage of the dibromine alkyl group. Compared with naked CDs in the absence of the ionic pair, the maximum emission wavelength undergoes a red-shift of nearly 60 nm. Moreover, protic solvents (water, ethanol and N,N'-dimethyl formamide) have an apparent effect on the emission intensities of CDs-2 and CDs-3. The time-resolved average lifetimes of CDs-2 and CDs-3 are calculated as 56.34 ns and 54.50 ns, respectively. Furthermore, they both have much better fluorescence stability in the solution with pH ranging from 2 to 11 due to the presence of the imidazolium cation. It is interesting to see that CDs-2 and CDs-3 have much different responses towards Cu2+ and Fe2+. The CDs-3 solution generates clear fluorescence quenching when treated with Fe2+. In brief, we believe that these findings can inspire more research developments in the synthesis and further application of functional CDs.

Abstract:The carbon dots (DCDs) derived from jaggery via simple synthesis and cost‐effective direct heating method. DCDs shown excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards Fe3+ ions over other competing metal ions with good linearity and limit of detection (LOD) of 1.92 μg/mL. The transformation of jaggery into value added DCDs with potential applications as a fluorescent sensor for ferric ions in environmental monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, and industrial quality control. Photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) have greatest potential in fluorescence sensing, energy, bioimaging and environmental pollutant sensing. Heteroatom doping have dramatically enhanced fluorescent properties and stability of CDs. In this work, sulfur doped carbon dots (DCDs) using jaggery as carbon precursor through direct heating method at 180 °C. The synthesized DCDs were characterized through XRD, FTIR, XPS, TEM, Fluorescence and UV‐Visible spectroscopic techniques. The DCDs have 9 nm particle size with amorphous nature and surface decorated with −OH, C−S, C=O functional groups on surface because of contribution of major element like C, O, and S elements. The DCDs showing bright blue emission having 360 nm excitation and 460 nm emission wavelength. Further, the DCDs were employed for metal ion sensing and it selectively detects Fe3+ metal ion with 1.92 μg/mL of detection and 5.84 μg/mL limit of quantification. The experiment follows static quenching mechanism which is confirmed by fluorescence life time experiment. This low‐cost, time effective fluorescent sensitive carbon dots have potential application in environmental pollution control, biomedical and forensic applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots synthesized from a renewable and sustainable source of biomass have greater attention in the nanomaterial research field. In the present study, we adopted a facile and green synthesis of carbon dots from bio waste of pumpkin seeds using a one-pot microwave-assisted carbonization method. The synthesized carbon dots exhibit excellent photoluminescence properties with a bright blue emission peak at 399 nm and fluorescence quantum yield was about 9.5%. The optical properties and structure of carbon dots were examined using various spectroscopy techniques and the synthesized carbon practical size was about 4.37 nm and possessed good solubility in water. Carbon dots were used for the detection of Ferric ions in the water bodies and the interaction between Fe 3+ ions and carbon dots was evaluated by fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. This method is a simple and selective detection of Fe 3+ in the aqueous medium. Interestingly carbon dots also show good antibacterial activity at a very low concentration (1 mg/L) for effective control of E . coli 93% and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (81%), within 12 h.

One-pot Synthesis of High-performance Green-emitting Carbon Dots for Cd2+ Sensing and Anti-counterfeiting Applications

Abstract:This study presents a facile one-pot solvothermal synthesis of high-performance green fluorescent carbon dots (G-CDs) using o-phenylenediamine and ethylenediamine as precursors. The G-CDs show excellent optical, temporal, and chemical stability. Notably, they exhibit the highest quantum yield of 24.2% in ethanol and a strong green emission peaking at 546¬Ýnm under 440‚Äì490¬Ýnm excitation. In addition, G-CDs have outstanding salt resistance and multi-solvent compatibility. Due to its bright photoluminescence, G-CDs can be used as a secure ink for anti-counterfeiting. More remarkably, Cd 2+ ions can efficiently quench the fluorescence of G-CDs with a detection limit of 0.152 ¬μmol/L, enabling accurate quantification of Cd 2+ in water systems. The simple synthesis of high-performance G-CDs expands their applicability in sensing and bioimaging.

Abstract:Biomass-based carbon dots (Bio-CDs) were prepared from dehydroabietic acid using a one-step hydrothermal process. Characterization by TEM, XPS and FTIR spectroscopy showed that the Bio-CDs are spherical nanoparticles containing mainly C, N and O elements, with functional groups such as amino and carbonyl groups on their surface. The optical properties of the Bio-CDs were studied in detail. A solution of Bio-CDs exhibited excitation-dependent blue fluorescence emission. The solution showed excellent photostability under ultraviolet light and the fluorescence intensity could be enhanced by decreasing the temperature. The intensity of fluorescence emission of the solution was essentially unchanged over the pH range 3.91–8.69, and in the presence of different anions and cations, other than Fe 3+ and Pb 2+ . Fe 3+ and Pb 2+ ions, respectively, quenched and enhanced the intensity of the fluorescence emission of the solution, allowing sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ (LOD = 2.33 μM, Em = 437 nm) and of Pb 2+ (LOD = 0.27 μM, Em = 437 nm and LOD = 0.33 μM, Em = 500 nm). As a further demonstration of potential applications, the Bio-CDs were shown to have low cytotoxicity and to stain cell nuclei as effectively as the commonly used nuclear stain 4′,6-diamino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), demonstrating their promise in the field of cell imaging.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have been regarded as novel heavy-metal-free fluorescent materials because of their prominent optical features. In this work, one type of amphipathic CDs is prepared by facile one-step solvothermal treatment of p-Phenylenediamine. The obtained CDs own numerous surface function groups which endow them prominent dispersibility in different solvents. Absorption, steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy have been adopted to investigate the mutual influence between the surface groups and different solvent molecules on the optical properties of the CDs. Strong solvatochromic behavior with tunable emission from blue to green and strict excitation-independent emission characteristic can be observed when the as-prepared CDs are dissolved in different solvents, suggesting their feasible sensing applications as an alternative of solvatochromic dye molecules. Furthermore, highly selective detection of Cu2+ ions using the as-synthesized CDs as sensing probes is achieved. It is expected that the investigated CDs with solvent-dependent optical properties as well as selective Cu2+ detection may have broad application prospects in bioimaging and biodetecting.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glutathione (GSH) have been reported to be associated with a variety of diseases. Therefore, the accurate and rapid determination of H2O2 and GSH was very important. The traditional assay was the colorimetric method, which suffered from the bottleneck of single-mode analysis. In this work, we designed a dual-mode fluorescence and colorimetric sensor for detecting H2O2 and GSH based on bifunctional Fe, Co-CDs, which possessed peroxidase (POD)-mimetic activity and fluorescence property. Concretely, the Fe, Co-CDs catalyzed oxidation of 3,3 ',5,5 '-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to a blue product (oxTMB) with the help of H2O2, which could be inhibited by GSH. Meanwhile, the fluorescence of Fe, Co-CDs weakened with increasing oxTMB, realizing the fluorescence analysis of H2O2 and GSH. In fluorescence and colorimetric sensors, the detection limit (LOD) of H2O2 could reach as low as 0.54 mu M and 0.81 mu M, as well as the LOD of GSH was 0.39 and 0.61 mu M, respectively. Besides, the smartphone-assisted hydrogel sensor was developed for on-site detection of GSH via color change. This study not only designed a dual-mode sensor for dual-target detection but also provided insights for further exploration of multifunctional nanozymes.
Green Synthesis of Fluorescent Carbon Dots from Ascorbic Acid and Their Application in Sensing and Biological Imaging

Abstract:A simple, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly one-step method has been developed to synthesize fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with the assistance of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Here H2O2 acts as a green accelerator to promote the preparation of CDs, while temperature plays a critical role in controlling the entire synthesis process. The prepared CDs demonstrate monodispersion, with an average diameter of ∼6.8 nm, superior stability, and excitation-dependent photoluminescent (PL) behavior. The PL mechanism of the CDs was investigated using time-resolved PL decay, revealing that the PL originates from both the defect state and the intrinsic state of the CDs. Furthermore, the CDs show significant promise as pH sensors and versatile nanothermometry devices, owing to their remarkable sensitivity to both pH and temperature, as demonstrated by the pronounced dependence of their steady-state fluorescence emission spectra. It’s worth noting that temperature and pH sensors present significant reversibility, sensitivity, and linearity. More importantly, the CDs display low cytotoxicity, good biocompatibility, and the ability to enter human breast cancer Bcap-37 cells, making them highly suitable candidates for cellular imaging and labeling.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) is a new type of nanomaterial, and its excellent properties such as optical properties, good water solubility, easy-to-modify surface make it promising in various practical applications. Carbon dots with multiple functions are "interdisciplinary talents" among the candidates and are more favorable. However, low quantum yields limit the widespread use of carbon dots. Therefore, the development of multi-functional carbon dots with high quantum yield is of great significance. In this work, nitrogen doped blue fluorescent CDs (B-CDs) were prepared by microwave assisted hydrothermal method using citric acid (CA) and o-phenylenediamine (OPD) as raw materials. The obtained B-CDs emit strong blue fluorescence in aqueous solution, and the relative quantum yield is as high as 87.07%. A highly sensitive fluorescent probe was developed for detecting Fe3+. The concentration range for Fe3+ detection was found to be linear in the range of 0.8 to 80 μM, with a limit of detection 0.095 μM. In addition, the fluorescence of B-CDs can be quenched by Fe3+ and restored by L-cysteine (L-Cys), resulting in an 'on-off-on' phenomenon, which makes it potential in information encryption and anti-counterfeiting, thereby expanding its application.

Abstract:Fluorescent materials, including organic molecules and quantum dots, usually respond to the environmental changes, such as acidity and basicity. It is challenging to construct highly-stable fluorescent materials. In this work, we fabricated novel carbon dots (CDs) with a high stability and a high quantum yield by using a solvothermal process, in which cellulose was the green precursor and 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl)/N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) was the solvent. The resultant CDs had the cationic imidazolium groups on their surface. As a result, they exhibited the excellent fluorescence stability in strong-acidic, strong-basic and high salt solutions. In addition, the CDs also presented a good resistance to the photobleaching under strong UV irradiation conditions. The highly stable CDs can be utilized as a fluorescent reference to significantly improve the responsiveness of the fluorescent materials. For example, the CDs were combined with cellulose acetate fluorescein isothiocyanate (CA-FITC) to obtain a series of ratiometric probes, which can visually detect pH values with a higher sensitivity. Furthermore, based on the outstanding processability and formability of cellulose derivatives, the CDs/CA-FITC was easily fabricated into responsive fluorescent coatings, films, and inks, indicating a huge potential in visual detection, solid-state luminescence, and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:A novel sensing system has been designed for the detection of cupric ions. It is based on the quenched fluorescence signal of carbon dots (CDs), which were carbonized from poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and L-Cysteine (CYS). Cupric ions interact with the nitrogen and sulfur atoms on surface of the CDs to form an absorbed complex; this results in strong quenching of the fluorescence of the CDs via a fast metal-to-ligand binding affinity. The synthesized water-soluble CDs also exhibited a quantum yield of 7.6%, with favorable photoluminescent properties and good photostability. The fluorescence intensity of the CDs was very stable in high ionic strength (up to 1.0 M NaCl) and over a wide range of pH levels (2.0–12.0). This facile method can therefore develop a sensor that offers reliable, fast, and selective detection of cupric ions with a detection limit down to 0.15 μM and a linear range from 0.5 to 7.0 μM (R2 = 0.980). The CDs were used for cell imaging, observed that they were low toxicity to Tramp C1 cells and exhibited blue and green and red fluorescence under a fluorescence microscope. In summary, the CDs exhibited excellent fluorescence properties, and could be applied to the selective and sensitive detection of cupric ion and multicolor cell imaging.

Abstract:Novel photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method using Hibiscus tea extract as a natural carbon source and boric acid as a boron source. The optical and physicochemical properties of the as-synthesized nitrogen- and boron-doped CDs (NB-CDs) were characterized using UV–Visible (UV–Vis), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The as-synthesized NB-CDs showed spherical morphology of approximately 6.2 ± 0.5 nm with quantum yield (9.2%), high aqueous solubility, strong photo-stability, and excitation-dependent PL behavior. The obtained NB-CDs exhibited high stability over a wide pH range and high ionic strength. Additionally, NB-CDs exhibited PL enhancement response with excellent sensitivity toward multi-metal ions, including Ag+, Cd2+, and Cr3+ ions, with very low detection limits of 44.5, 164.4, and 54.6 nM, respectively, with a wide concentration range of 0–10 μM. Upon testing the cytotoxicity of the NB-CDs at a concentration of 20 μg/mL for 24 h, we found no obvious inhibition of cell viability. Therefore, the proposed sensor method can be successfully applied to detect Ag+, Cd2+, and Cr3+ ions in cell imaging as well as in real water environmental samples.
