Abstract:Development of active and earth-abundant catalysts is pivotal to render hydrazine monohydrate (N2H4·H2O) viable as a hydrogen carrier. Herein, we report the synthesis of noble-metal-free Ni-W-O-derived catalysts using a hydrothermal method in combination with reductive annealing treatment. Interestingly, the thus-prepared Ni-based catalysts exhibit remarkably distinct catalytic properties toward N2H4·H2O decomposition depending upon the annealing temperature. From a systematic phase/microstructure/chemical state characterization and the first-principles calculations, we found that the variation of the apparent catalytic properties of these Ni-based catalysts should stem from the formation of different Ni-W alloys with distinct intrinsic activity, selectivity, and distribution state. The thereby chosen Ni-W alloy nanocomposite catalyst prepared under an optimized condition showed high activity, nearly 100% selectivity, and excellent stability toward N2H4·H2O decomposition for hydrogen production. Furthermore, this noble-metal-free catalyst enables rapid hydrogen production from commercially available N2H4·H2O solution with an intriguingly high hydrogen capacity of 6.28 wt % and a satisfactory dynamic response property. These results are inspiring and momentous for promoting the use of the N2H4·H2O-based H2 source systems.

Abstract:For the application of photocatalysis, the development of noble metal-free cocatalysts is crucial. Here, a simple molecular fusion method was employed to create high crystallinity GQDs with the-NHNH2 modification, which were then used as an effective metal-free cocatalyst in the photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction. The modified-NHNH2 Lewis base active sites, the quick charge separation channels, and the improved electric conductivity allowed the optimized NHNH2-GQDs/PUCN sample to exhibit an H2 evolution rate of 204.2 mmol g-1 h-1, which is an 80-fold greater activity than that of pure PUCN. Abstract:The development of hydrazine monohydrate (N2H4 center dot H2O) as a viable hydrogen carrier requires high-performance and cost-effective catalysts for selectively promoting its decomposition to generate hydrogen at mild conditions. Herein, we report the synthesis of a non-precious metal nanocatalyst, in both powdery and monolithic forms, using a simple hydrothermal method followed by annealing treatment under H-2 atmosphere. Thus-obtained nanocomposite outperforms the reported non-precious metal catalysts in terms of the overall catalytic properties. More impressively, the system composed of the monolithic Ni10Mo/Ni-Mo-O/Ni foam catalyst, the 85 wt% N2H4 center dot H2O solution and alkali promoter show high hydrogen generation rate, rapid dynamic response and a material-based hydrogen capacity of 6.2 wt%. For the first time, our study demonstrates that the usage of noble-metal-free monolithic catalyst enabled rapid and high-density hydrogen generation from commercial N2H4 center dot H2O solution. Abstract:RhNiB nanoparticles with sodium hydroxide dependent boron content are highly efficient catalysts for the decomposition of hydrous hydrazine at room temperature including 100% H2 selectivity and exceptionally high catalytic kinetics, which are derived from the synergistic effect of boron doping and alkali promotion. These encouraging results will promote the practical application of hydrous hydrazine for chemical hydrogen storage.

Abstract:The rational design of highly efficient nanocatalysts and understanding of the hydrogen generation process for selective and complete decomposition of hydrazine borane (HB) remain challenging. Here, a series of monodispersed, ultrasmall, highly efficient PtxNiy alloyed nanoparticles were prepared using ZIF-8 as the MOF template. Upon scrutinizing the optimal Pt, Ni and support proportions, remarkable synergy of volcano-type is disclosed between these two metals in their alloy and with the ZIF-8 support. The high catalyst efficiency with complete gas evolution is among the best ever recorded, also showing promising utilization of this catalyst to other tandem reactions involving hydrogen. Experimental and DFT simulation results indicate that alloying Pt with Ni in PtNi@ZIF-8 with optimized surface d-band center optimizes absorption and activation of the HB molecule, thereby reducing the energy barrier of the hydrolysis of BH3 group in HB. By systemically comparing the hydrolytic decomposition processes of HB over the nanocatalysts PtNi@ZIF-8 and RhNi@ZIF-8, the desorption of the borates is identified as the rate-determining step. In the following decomposition of the N2H4 moiety, the nanocatalyst PtNi@ZIF-8 always shows smaller Gibbs free energy gap than RhNi@ZIF-8, rationalizing the faster kinetics for complete hydrogen evolution. The principle and results generated in the present study should contribute to optimizing the design of highly efficient nanocatalysts for hydrogen generation from hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:The exploration of heterogeneous supported nanocatalysts with high performance as well as low cost is vital but still challenged for utilization of sustainable hydrogen fuel. In this work, bimetallic CuNi nanoparticles are immobilized on zirconia/nitrogen doped porous carbon/reduced graphene oxide (ZrO2/NC/RGO) derived from NH2-UiO-66/GO precursor. Thanks to the usage of ZrO2/NC/RGO, the well-dispersed CuNi NPs with the size of 2.5 nm were successfully obtained via a facile wet-chemical co-reduction method. By virtue of the synergistic effect induced by solid supports, the resulted Cu0.8Ni0.2@ZrO2/NC/RGO nanocatalysts display excellent activity of catalyzing ammonia borane hydrolysis, with an outstanding overall turnover frequency (TOF) value of as high as 40.9 molH2 molcat- 1 min- 1 at mild condition. Such an enhanced catalytic performance is attributed that zirconium oxide combined with N species could induce a strong synergistic effect to efficiently adjust the electronic distribution, optimize the d-band center as well as favor the Femi level of CuNi catalytic sites, resulting in an improving kinetics of ammonia borane hydrolysis (ABH). This work not only deeply explores the catalytic mechanism of ABH, but also provides a promising strategy for construction of heterogeneous nanocatalytic systems with high performance for industrial application.

Abstract:Developing an efficient catalyst for hydrogen (H2) generation from hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB) to significantly improve the activity for the hydrogen generation from AB is important for its practical application. Herein, we report a novel hybrid nanostructure composed of uniformly dispersed 2P core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in N-doped carbon nanotube polyhedron (2P/N–CNP) through a carbonization-phosphidation strategy derived from ZIF-67. Benefiting from the electronic effect of P doping, high dispersibility and strong interfacial interaction between 2P and N-CNTs, the 2P/N–CNP catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance towards the hydrolysis of AB for hydrogen generation, affording a high TOF value of 18.4 mol H2 mol metal−1 min−1 at the first cycle. This work provides a promising lead for the design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts towards convenient H2 generation from hydrogen-rich substrates in the close future.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogen is a promising energy carrier for a future sustainable energy economy. The two most promising routes for its large‐scale production in high purity are electrocatalytic water splitting and chemical release from hydrogen‐storage materials. The rational design and synthesis of robust catalysts for hydrogen evolution are crucial stages in the development of hydrogen as an energy source. This work reports the production of a novel hydrogen evolution catalyst consisting of uniform hollow porous carbon spheres loaded with ruthenium nanoclusters via a simple hydrothermal process at low temperature. The catalyst not only exhibits extraordinary catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction, with extremely low overpotentials at all pH values, but also shows outstanding activity for hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB) with a high turnover frequency. Furthermore, the catalyst remains stable during both reactions, thus allowing one unified catalyst to facilitate hydrogen generation by two different methods for highly efficient and superstable hydrogen production. This work may provide a template method for rational design and fabrication of various metals/N‐doped carbon catalysts that promote hydrogen production through both the electrolysis of water and the hydrolysis of AB, which will advance the development of hydrogen as an energy source.

Abstract:Ammonia borane hydrolysis is considered as a potential means of safe and fast method of H2 production if it is efficiently catalyzed. Here a series of nearly monodispersed alloyed bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts are introduced, optimized among transition metals, and found to be extremely efficient and highly selective with sharp positive synergy between 2/3 Ni and 1/3 Pt embedded inside a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) support. These catalysts are much more efficient for H2 release than either Ni or Pt analogues alone on this support, and for instance the best catalyst Ni2Pt@ZiF-8 achieves a TOF of 600 molH2·molcatal-1·min-1 and 2222 molH2·molPt-1·min-1 under ambient conditions, which overtakes performances of previous Pt-base catalysts. The presence of NaOH boosts H2 evolution that becomes 87 times faster than in its absence with Ni2Pt@ZiF-8, whereas NaOH decreases H2 evolution on the related Pt@ZiF-8 catalyst. The ZIF-8 support appears outstanding and much more efficient than other supports including graphene oxide, active carbon and SBA-15 with these nanoparticles. Mechanistic studies especially involving kinetic isotope effects using D2O show that cleavage by oxidative addition of an O-H bond of water onto the catalyst surface is the rate-determining step of this reaction. The remarkable catalyst activity of Ni2Pt@ZiF-8 has been exploited for successful tandem catalytic hydrogenation reactions using ammonia borane as H2 source. In conclusion the selective and remarkable synergy disclosed here together with the mechanistic results should allow significant progress in catalyst design toward convenient H2 generation from hydrogen-rich substrates in the close future.
Hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH3BH3 over Cu/CoOx(OH)y nanocomposite for H2 evolution

Abstract:Although a variety of noble-metal-based nanocatalysts, such as Pd, Pt, Au, Rh, and Ru, have been developed for the efficient H2 evolution from hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH3BH3, it is extremely desirable to design and develop noble-metal-free nanomaterials as the high-efficiency nanocatalysts for H2 generation from hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH3BH3. Herein, we first designed and synthesized a string of CoOx(OH)y colloid-stabilized Cu, Ni, Co and Fe nanoparticles (Cu/CoOx(OH)y, Ni/CoOx(OH)y, Co/CoOx(OH)y and Fe/CoOx(OH)y), by immobilization of Cu, Ni, Co or Fe nanoparticles at the surface of CoOx(OH)y colloid, for the efficient H2 evolution from hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH3BH3 at 30 °C. The optional Cu/CoOx(OH)y nanohybrid exhibits the super-high catalytic property, with the highest TOF of 67.5 mol(H2)·molCu -1·min−1, in the H2 evolution from hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH3BH3 at 30 °C. More Interestingly, the TOF of Cu/CoOx(OH)y nanohybrid catalyzed hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH3BH3 reaches to 630.58 mol(H2)·molCu -1·min−1 (2789 mL(H2)·gcat -1·min−1) under 0.3 mol/L NaOH, which exceeds all or almost all non-noble metal nanocatalysts, even some noble metal nanocatalysts. The comparison of other common supports, including Fe(OH)3, Ni(OH)2 and Cu(OH)2, has highlighted the vital role of CoOx(OH)y in NH3BH3 hydrolytic dehydrogenation. A large KIE of 2.7 with D2O has illustrated that the oxygen-hydrogen bond cleavage of water was the rate-determining step in the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH3BH3. This work not only provides a new explication for the cost-effective design and synthesis of magnetic nanomaterials, but also offers a high-efficiency noble-metal-free nanocatalyst for H2 evolution from hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NH3BH3.

Abstract:The catalyst with high activity, 100% selectivity and good durability is highly desirable in developing a hydrous hydrazine-based hydrogen generation system. Herein we report the synthesis of nickel–platinum (Ni–Pt) bimetallic nanoparticles supported on mesoporous alumina (MA) using a simple one-pot evaporation-induced self-assembly method. The Ni–Pt/MA catalyst exhibits excellent activity and satisfactory stability for selectively catalyzing the decomposition of hydrous hydrazine to generate hydrogen at mild temperatures, which compares favorably with the performance of the catalysts developed to date. The facile synthesis of high-performance and cost-effective Ni-based catalyst is of clear significance for the development of hydrous hydrazine as a viable hydrogen carrier.

Abstract:The development of active, selective, and robust catalysts is a key issue in promoting the practical application of hydrazine monohydrate (N2H4H2O) as a viable hydrogen carrier. Herein, the synthesis of a supported Ni-Pt bimetallic nanocatalyst on mesoporous ceria by a one-pot evaporation-induced self-assembly method is reported. The catalyst exhibits exceptionally high catalytic activity, 100% selectivity, and satisfactory stability in promoting H-2 generation from an alkaline solution of N2H4H2O at moderate temperatures. For example, the Ni60Pt40/CeO2 catalyst enabled complete decomposition of N2H4H2O to generate H-2 at a rate of 293h(-1) at 30 degrees C in the presence of 2M NaOH, which compares favorably with the reported N2H4H2O decomposition catalysts. Phase/structural analysis by XRD, TEM, and Auger electron spectroscopy was conducted to gain insight into the excellent catalytic performance of the Ni-Pt/CeO2 catalyst.
Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanoribbons: Graphene‐Assisted Formation and Synergic Function for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:The development of new promising metal-free catalysts is of great significance for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a rationally assembled three-dimensional (3D) architecture of 1D graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanoribbons with 2D graphene sheets has been developed by a one-step hydrothermal method. Because of the multipathway of charge and mass transport, the hierarchically structured g-C3N4 nanoribbon-graphene hybrids lead to a high electrocatalytic ability for HER with a Tafel slope of 54mVdecade(-1), a low onset overpotential of 80mV and overpotential of 207mV to approach a current of 10mAcm(-2), superior to those non-metal materials and well-developed metallic catalysts reported previously. This work presents a great advance for designing and developing highly efficient metal-free catalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Developing noble-metal-free catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) with superior stability in acid is of critical importance for large-scale, low-cost hydrogen production from water electrolysis. Herein, we report a highly efficient and stable noble-metal-free HER catalyst, which is composed of Ni and Mo2C nanocrystals supported on N-doped graphite nanotubes. This catalyst shows very low overpotential (65 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel plot of 67 mV/dec) and good stability for HER in acidic electrolyte, which is a promising noble-metal-free HER catalyst.
Ruthenium Nanoclusters and Single Atoms on α-MoC/N-Doped Carbon Achieves Low-Input/Input-Free Hydrogen Evolution via Decoupled/Coupled Hydrazine Oxidation

Abstract:The hydrazine oxidation-assisted H2 evolution method promises low-input and input-free hydrogen production. However, developing high-performance catalysts for hydrazine oxidation (HzOR) and hydrogen evolution (HER) is challenging. Here, we introduce a bifunctional electrocatalyst α-MoC/N-C/RuNSA, merging ruthenium (Ru) nanoclusters (NCs) and single atoms (SA) into cubic α-MoC nanoparticles-decorated N-doped carbon (α-MoC/N-C) nanowires, through electrodeposition. The composite showcases exceptional activity for both HzOR and HER, requiring -80 mV and -9 mV respectively to reach 10 mA cm-2. Theoretical and experimental insights confirm the importance of two Ru species for bifunctionality: NCs enhance the conductivity, and its coexistence with SA balances the H ad/desorption for HER and facilitates the initial dehydrogenation during the HzOR. In the overall hydrazine splitting (OHzS) system, α-MoC/N-C/RuNSA excels as both anode and cathode materials, achieving 10 mA cm-2 at just 64 mV. The zinc hydrazine (Zn-Hz) battery assembled with α-MoC/N-C/RuNSA cathode and Zn foil anode can exhibit 97.3 % energy efficiency, as well as temporary separation of hydrogen gas during the discharge process. Therefore, integrating Zn-Hz with OHzS system enables self-powered H2 evolution, even in hydrazine sewage. Overall, the amalgamation of NCs with SA achieves diverse catalytic activities for yielding multifold hydrogen gas through advanced cell-integrated-electrolyzer system.
A Highly Efficient and Stable Biphasic Nanocrystalline Ni–Mo–N Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution in Both Acidic and Alkaline Electrolytes

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of critical importance for sustainable hydrogen production from water electrolysis. In this work, we report a highly efficient and stable noble metal free HER catalyst, which is composed of homogeneously distributed metallic Ni and NiMo4N5 nanocrystals. The biphasic nanocrystalline Ni–Mo–N catalyst shows very low overpotential (53mV in 0.5M H2SO4 and 43mV in 1M KOH, at current density 20mA/cm2) and good stability for HER in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes, which is a promising low cost alternative for platinum based HER catalysts.

Abstract:Finding a non-noble metal (NNM) electrocatalyst with comparative hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in a broad pH range is essential but challenging. Here, we report a unique shrunken hollow spherical shell with Mo2N andMo(2)C dual active phases encapsulated by nitrogen-doped carbon (Mo-N/ C@N-C). As NNM electrocatalyst, it shows high HER activity and stability in a broad pH range. This material can be synthesized by pyrolysis of sulfonated polystyrene@polyaniline-MoOx sphere-like precursors using sulfonated polystyrene as template and polyaniline as carbon and nitrogen source. In an alkaline solution, the as-prepared Mo-N/C@N-C only needs an overpotential of 135mV to reach the current density of 10 mAcm(-2), and exhibits high electrochemical and structural durability. The catalyst also possesses similar performance in acidic and neutral media, making it a suitable candidate for hydrogen production in all pH media. Such excellent catalytic performance is mainly driven by the synergy of abundant Mo2N and Mo2C dual active centers, and shrunken hollow sphere structures with high packing density, as well as the N-C active site and protection of N-doped carbon frameworks.
