Abstract:Delamination treatment is crucial in promoting the activity of bulk graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). However, most of the currently used methods of exfoliating bulk g-C3N4 to achieve g-C3N4 thin layers suffer from low yield and environmental pollution. Herein, we developed a facile bacterial etching approach for the preparation of high-quality g-C3N4 nanosheets by exfoliating bulk g-C3N4 under room temperature. Morphology and physicochemical characterizations show that the bacteria-treated g-C3N4 (BT-CN) samples, especially BT-CN-2d, have a lamina-like two-dimensional (2D) in-plane porous structure, a significantly enlarged specific surface area (82.61 m2 g-1), and a remarkable narrow band gap (2.11 eV). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra confirm the dramatic enrichment of unpaired electron in the BT-CN-2d g-C3N4 nanosheets. EIS spectra and photocurrent tests indicate the fast electron transportation. As a result, the representative BT-CN-2d g-C3N4 photocatalyst shows an optimal visible light-driven photocatalytic performance in water disinfection (fourfold higher than bulk g-C3N4), as well as good cycle stability. This moderate and clean bacterial etching process can be realized in tens of gram scale in the laboratory and should be readily extended to kilogram scale. The present work provides fundamental knowledge about the scalable production of high-quality g-C3N4 by bioengineering method, offering extendable availability for designing and fabricating other functional 2D materials.

Abstract:Single atomic layer nanosheet materials show great application potential in many fields due to their enhanced intrinsic properties compared to their counterparts and newly born properties. Herein, g-C3N4 nanosheets with a single atomic layer structure are prepared by a simple chemical exfoliation method. The as-prepared nanosheets show a single atomic thickness of 0.4 nm and a lateral size of micrometers. The structure and photocatalytic properties of the as-prepared single layer g-C3N4 are then studied. Compared with the bulk g-C3N4, single layer g-C3N4 nanosheets show great superiority in photogenerated charge carrier transfer and separation. Accordingly, the photocatalytic H-2 production and pollutant decomposition activities and photocurrent generation of single layer g-C3N4 nanosheets are much higher than those of the bulk g-C3N4, indicating the great application potential of single layer g-C3N4 nanosheets in photocatalysis and photosynthesis.
"Alternated Cooling and Heating" Strategy Enables Rapid Fabrication of Highly-Crystalline G-C3n4 Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic Water Purification under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Highly-crystalline 2-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets with low structural imperfection usually possess high photocatalytic activity that benefits from the suppressed electron ehole recombination. However, the conventional exfoliation strategy is incapable for fast and clean preparation of such highly-quality g-C3N4 nanosheets from their bulk-type counterparts. Herein, highly-crystalline few-layer g-C3N4 nanosheets were synthesized only within 10 min by judiciously combining flash freezing and microwave-assisted thermo-exfoliation. Physicochemical characterization showed the ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets had high crystallinity, narrowed band gap (2.62 eV), enlarged specific surface area (88.59m(2)/g) and enhanced electron transport ability. The quasi-2D few-layer g-C3N4 nanosheets were more efficient than bulk g-C3N4 in photocatalytic water purification and disinfection, as evidenced by 3-fold enhancement in humic acid photodegradation and fast water disinfection against Escherichia coli under visible-light irradiation. Such improvements were mainly attributed to the reduction of structural defects and enrichment of exposed active sites, which together led to efficient self-suppression of electronehole recombination. Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a fascinating material with potential applications in photocatalysis due to its good chemical stability, high thermal stability, and relative ease of synthesis. In this work, ultrathin g-C3N4 is constructed using a hybridized method, which combines the advantages of thermal and liquid-phase stripping methods. This sample can improve performance in degrading organic pollutants several times, and the highest enhancement efficiency occurs in an alkaline environment. In addition, photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide can be increased to 2.6 times that of the bulk sample. These improved properties are due to the increase in specific surface area, the generation of free radicals, and adsorption capacity. This work presents a one-step exfoliation method for bulk g-C3N4 for more surface-active sites and strong redox capacity.

Abstract:Ultrathin holey graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets have caused tremendous concern on highly active photocatalytic elimination of environmental contaminants because of its many interesting physichemical properties. But the photocatalysis ability for the bulk g-C3N4 is always limited by their small specific surface area and the scant number of active sites in the process of photocatalysis. Here, a fast and simple way to prepare ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets have rich in-plane pores by sodium hypochlorite etching is reported in water solution at room temperature, whereas the intercalation of Na+ and the synergistic effect of ClO- oxidation enable a fast exfoliation of bulk g-C3N4. Comprehensive structural and morphological of these products were analyzed through transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscope, N-2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electron spin resonance measurements at room temperature. The obtained porous ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets by N-2 adsorption-desorption tests show significantly increased specific surface area (85.7 m(2) g(-1)). In addition, the results of the obtained ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets reveal its remarkable hierarchical pore structures composed of abundant mesopores and small micropores (< 20 nm) and UV-vis exhibit narrower band gap (2.59 eV), more new exposed edges and improved electron transport capacity. Compared to the bulk g-C3N4, micro-meso of the hierarchical porous ultrathin g-C3N4 show more than 4 times higher activity when tested under visible-light-driven (VLD) Cr(VI) photo detoxification. This can be owed to the enrichment of active sites and the short distance of matter transfers from carrier to reaction sites. The experiment provides a strategy of the clean and scalable preparation the highly reactive and ultrathin g-C3N4 photocatalysts for energy development and environmental treatment.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) shows a graphite-like layered structure, which provides a high theoretical value for solar-to-hydrogen evolution especially for a 2D nanostructure. However, conventional polycondensation induces a strong agglomeration and collapse of nanostructure, resulting in a relatively poor photocatalytic performance. To overcome this problem, we develop a gas bubbling exfoliation strategy with NH4Cl assistant to make ultrathin 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets self-assembled into a 3D macroporous network on a large scale. The hierarchical structure significantly improves the specific surface area to 176.4 m2 g−1 (11.6 times higher than the reference g-C3N4), which allows a large water/g-C3N4 interface for photocatalytic water reduction reaction. The ultrathin 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets show a thickness of about 1.4 nm, which greatly suppress photoinduced carriers recombination and enhance charge transfer at the interface. Furthermore, the doping of N and Cl is achieved during synthesis. As a result, the resulting g-C3N4 demonstrates a remarkable improvement in H2 production of 12.89 mmol g-1 h−1, which is 21 times higher than the g-C3N4 obtained from the conventional condensation method. These explorations provide a facile guidance for the quasi 3D g-C3N4 hierarchical architecture engineering even for various energy-related applications.

Abstract:Exfoliation of carbon nitride (g-C3N4) into an ultrathin nanostructure significantly improves its photoactivity. However, the effects of the exfoliation method on the microstructure and photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 nanosheets remain largely unknown. Herein, several typical strategies, such as thermal, chemical, ultrasonic and one-step exfoliation, were applied to exfoliate g-C3N4 nanosheets for photocatalytic applications. A procedure capable of controlling the morphology, microstructure, light-absorption property, and visible light photoactivity of g-C3N4 nanosheets was attempted. We found that nanosheets prepared from one-step exfoliation present superior photocatalytic efficiency under visible light than those fabricated by thermal exfoliation and ultrasonic exfoliation. The kinetic constants for bisphenol A (BPA) photodegradation over these samples were determined to be 6.5, 4.5 and 2.3 times higher than bulk g-C3N4, respectively. For chemical exfoliation, excessive oxidation by H2SO4 can lead to the structural defects and deactivation of urea-derived g-C3N4 nanosheets. Carbon nitride nanosheets synthesized by one-step exfoliation exhibited high specific surface area, optimal band gap energy structure, and high charge separation efficiency, thereby increasing visible-light photoactivity. Enabling cost-effective production of ultrathin and robust g-C3N4 nanosheets, one-step exfoliation offers a potential strategy to exploit high-performance g-C3N4 for water purification applications.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets are extracted, produced via simple liquid-phase exfoliation of a layered bulk material, g-C3N4. The resulting nanosheets, having ≈2 nm thickness and N/C atomic ratio of 1.31, show an optical bandgap of 2.65 eV. The carbon nitride nanosheets are demonstrated to exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution under visible light.

Abstract:As a promising visible-light-responsive catalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been widely used in environmental and energy applications owing to its unique semiconducting optoelectronic properties. However, the photocatalytic performance of bulk g-C3N4 synthesized using N-containing precursors via a conventional thermal polycondensation process is generally limited by low crystallinity caused by incomplete polymerization. In addition to forced polymerization under high-pressure conditions, removing the unpolymerized and inactive part of bulk g-C3N4 through controllable etching is another practical way to optimize its crystallinity. Therefore, we developed an economical and general method to fabricate g-C3N4 with high crystallinity and excellent photocatalytic properties, in which cheap sodium nitrite aqueous solution is utilized as a moderate etching agent. The compositions and physiochemical properties of the products were comprehensively investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. In addition, ToF-SIMS (time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry), a new surface analysis technology, was also used to determine the surface and structural characteristics of all samples. The obtained g-C3N4 shows ideal high-crystallinity features and excellent charge transfer ability, leading to significantly improved Cr(VI) reduction activity under visible light. Moreover, there is only a low content of nitrite residue (63.3 mg g(-1)) in the final g-C3N4 product, indicating that the method employing NaNO2, which is widely used in the food industry, is safe and waste-free. Therefore, the new controllable NaNO2 etching method is cleaner and more efficient than commonly-used corrosion approaches based on strong acids or strong oxidants, and thus affords a new strategy in the regulation and structural design of various catalysts.

Herein, a facile dicyandiamide-blowing method with NH4Cl as the gas template for the synergic achievement of large-quantity and high-quality graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets has been reported. The g-C3N4 nanosheets prepared by this one step method possess enhanced specific area surface, improved electron transport ability and increased lifetime of photoexcited charge carriers, revealing enhanced photocatalytic H-2 activities than that of bulk g-C3N4. Our work represents a significant progress for the scalable fabrication of high quality 2D g-C3N4 and provides a new pathway for the scalable production of other 2D nanomaterials.

Abstract:Microwave induced rapid decomposition of nitromethane at low temperature exfoliates the graphene sheets from the FeCl(3) and CH(3)NO(2) co-intercalated graphite compound without creating many defects and functional groups. Tailored Exfoliation of Polymeric Carbon Nitride for Photocatalytic H2O2 Production and CH4 Valorization Mediated by O2 Activation

Abstract:The exfoliation of bulk C3N4 (BCN) into ultrathin layered structure is an effective strategy to boost photocatalytic efficiency by exposing interior active sites and accelerating charge separation and transportation. Herein, we report a novel nitrate anion intercalation–decomposition (NID) strategy that is effective in peeling off BCN into few-layer C3N4 (fl-CN) with tailored thickness down to bi-layer. This strategy only involves hydrothermal treatment of BCN in diluted HNO3 aqueous solution, followed by pyrolysis at various temperatures. The decomposition of the nitrate anions not only exfoliates BCN and changes the band structure, but also incorporates oxygen species onto fl-CN, which is conducive to O2 adsorption and hence relevant chemical processes. In photocatalytic O2 reduction under visible light irradiation, the H2O2 production rate over the optimal fl-CN-530 catalyst is 952 μmol g–1 h–1, which is 8.8 times that over BCN. More importantly, under full arc irradiation and in the absence of hole scavenger, CH4 can be photocatalytically oxidized by on-site formed H2O2 and active oxygen species to generate value-added C1 oxygenates with high selectivity of 99.2% and record-high production rate of 1893 μmol g−1 h−1 among the metal-free C3N4-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Graphitic‐carbon nitride (g‐C3N4), a metal‐free two‐dimensional layered semiconductor material, holds great potential for energy conversion, environmental remediation, and sensing. However, the limited solubility of g‐C3N4 in conventional solvents hinders its widespread application. Improving the dissolution of g‐C3N4 in the liquid phase is highly desired but challenging. Herein, we report an innovative approach to dissolve g‐C3N4 using ZnCl2 molten salt hydrates. The solubility of g‐C3N4 in the solution reaches up to 200 mg mL‐1. Density functional theory (DFT) results suggest that ZnCl+H2O is the key species that leads to charge redistribution on g‐C3N4 surface and promotes the dissolution of carbon nitride in the solution. Furthermore, through dilution, the dissolved carbon nitride can be effectively recovered while maintaining its intrinsic chemical structure. The resultant regenerated C3N4 (r‐C3N4) exhibits nanobelt morphology and demonstrates a substantially improved photocatalytic activity in H2O2 production. The rate of H2O2 production over the r‐ C3N4 reaches 20,228 μmol g‐1 h‐1, which is 6.2 times higher than that of pristine g‐C3N4. This green and efficient dissolution route of g‐C3N4 offers an effective approach for its diverse applications.

Abstract:This study demonstrates the simultaneous exfoliation and modification of graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) via reductive alkylation. Our results reveal that the method is feasible and highly efficient in producing 2D g‐C3N4 nanosheets which greatly overcome the drawbacks of bulk g‐C3N4 photocatalyst. The reduced band gap caused by the covalent functionalization of alkyl chains on g‐C3N4 lattice improves the photoresponse and the visible‐light harvesting ability, indicating more charge carriers will generate under visible‐light irradiation. In addition, the significantly enlarged surface area and the nanosheet structural benefits are favorable for the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The photocatalytic activity of AGCNNs under visible‐light irradiation is highly enhanced because of the synergistic effects of these favorable factors. The RhB photodegradation rate and the photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of AGCNNs are 3.9 and 1.9 times as fast as that of g‐C3N4, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of AGCNNs is further improved when combined with a minority of graphene sheets which are employed as electron acceptors promoting the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The RhB photodegradation rate and the photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of AGCNNs are further improved to 9.1 and 3.3 times as fast as that of g‐C3N4, respectively. Alkylated g‐C3N4 nanosheets are synthesized via a simultaneous exfoliation and surface modification method. Due to the synergistic effects of reduced band gap and significantly enlarged surface area, the produced 2D g‐C3N4 nanosheets show greatly improved photocatalytic performance in comparison to the bulk counterpart g‐C3N4.

Abstract:A large-scale, inexpensive, and facile strategy has been successfully developed for preparation of high-quality graphene nanosheets by combining electron-absorbing materials and chorine in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The as-obtained graphene sheets were proven to contain low levels of naturally absorbed oxygen inherited from the starting graphite by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. Meanwhile, the structure of produced graphene sheets was further characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Compared to the previous techniques, this eco-friendly approach demonstrates obvious advantages, such as low cost and simplicity, which could be an alternative method to prepare graphene-based composites for the potential applications in the near future.
Lysozyme-assisted ultrasonic exfoliation of graphitic carbon nitride into highly stable nanosheets with enhanced bactericidal capacity

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a visible light-responsive photocatalytic material with important application prospects in many fields. However, the interaction between g-C3N4 monolayers makes it easy to aggregate and precipitate in aqueous solutions, and it is necessary to prepare stable g-C3N4 aqueous dispersions for their applications. Here we propose a facile, green, and low-cost method for the preparation of stable g-C3N4 dispersions by ultrasonicating g-C3N4 in lysozyme (LYZ) solution. The LYZ was adsorbed on the surface of g-C3N4 through non-covalent interactions such as electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-cation interaction to prevent the aggregation of g-C3N4 nanolayers. The LYZ/g-C3N4 could quickly re-form a uniform aqueous dispersion solution after freeze-drying, and exhibit good stability. Further, the results of photocatalytic sterilization showed that the assisted dispersion of LYZ enhanced the bactericidal activity of g-C3N4 and exhibited promising application prospects in the field of biomedicine and water disinfection.

Enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity and oxidation ability of porous graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets via thermal exfoliation

Abstract:Graphene-like porous g-C3N4 nanosheets were synthesized via direct pyrolysis of thiourea followed by a thermal exfoliation. With increased exfoliation temperature, the color of the resulting samples gradually became shallow, and the thickness and size of the layers were decreased. A formation mechanism involving layer-by-layer exfoliation coupled with layer splitting was proposed. The band structure of the g-C3N4 nanosheets was continuously tuned because of quantum size effect. Time-resolved decay spectra indicated that the radiative lifetime of charge carriers (τ 1 and τ 2) increased from 4.13 and 26.23ns for bulk g-C3N4 to 5.36 and 36.57ns for graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets. The g-C3N4 nanosheet samples were applied for visible light photocatalytic removal of NOx in air. The performance of porous g-C3N4 nanosheets was significantly enhanced with increased exfoliation temperature from 450 to 550°C. Moreover, photochemical and structural stability was well maintained after multiple reaction cycles. By monitoring the reaction intermediate NO2, it was found that the generation of NO2 was inhibited. The activity enhancement of graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets can be predominantly ascribed to the prolonged lifetime and improved photo-oxidation ability of charge carriers arising from the unique electronic structure. As the synthesis method for graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets with high a performance is simple, the g-C3N4 nanosheets can be envisioned to be applicable in environmental remediation and solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Eco-friendly exfoliation of two-dimensional nanosheets from their layered bulks is very attracting but still remains a big challenge. Here, we report a novel preparation route of two-dimensional nanosheets through soaking the bulk layered material in the C2H4O3-based chemical exfoliation system followed by microwave irradiation. This route has demonstrated the effective exfoliation of two-dimensional nanosheets (graphene nanosheets, BNNS and MoS2NS) from their layered bulks in a green and eco-friendly way. The average layer-number of the obtained graphene nanosheets, BNNS and MoS2NS is 4, 6 and 5, respectively, behaving a few-layer feature. Interestingly, when the graphene paper is prepared from the exfoliated graphene nanosheets by simple vacuum filtration and mechanical pressing, its average electrical conductivity is up to 7.36 × 105 S/m and the EMI SE value reaches to 61 dB, both among the highest for the graphene papers reported previously. Since there exists no serious fragmentation of layered materials during the whole exfoliation, the present exfoliation strategy is more competent in preparing the large-sized two-dimensional nanosheets over those conventional green routes.
