Abstract:In materials science, "green" synthesis has gotten a lot of interest as a reliable, long-lasting, and ecofriendly way to make a variety of materials/nanomaterials, including metal/metal oxide nanomaterials. To accommodate various biological materials, green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has been used (e.g., bacteria, fungi, algae, and plant extracts). In this work, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was used to biosynthesize palladium nanoparticles (bioPd) under aerobic conditions for the Cr(VI) bio-reduction. The size and distribution of bio-Pd are controlled by adjusting the ratio of microbial biomass and palladium precursors. The high cell: Pd ratio has the smallest average particle size of 6.33 ± 1.69 nm. And it has the lowest electrocatalytic potential (-0.132 V) for the oxidation of formic acid, which is 0.158 V lower than commercial Pd/C (5%). Our results revealed that the small size and uniformly distributed extracellular bio-Pd could achieve completely catalytic reduction of 200 mg/L Cr(VI) solution within 10 min, while the commercial Pd/C (5%) need at least 45 min. The bio-Pd materials maintain a high reduction during five cycles. Microorganisms play an important role in the whole process, which can fully disperse palladium nanoparticles, completely reduce Cr(VI), and effectively adsorb Cr(III). This work expands our understanding and provides a reference for the design and development of efficient and green bio-Pd catalysts for environmental pollution control under simple and mild conditions.
Highly Efficient Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium on Amino-Functionalized Palladium Nanowires

Abstract:Palladium (Pd) nanostructures are attracting much attention due to their intriguing optical, electrical, and catalytic properties. Pd-catalytic hydrogenation is an effective route for remediating organic and inorganic contaminants. In this work, a simple formate-mediated chemical reduction method is used to synthesize the polyallylamine functionalized Pd nanowire networks (Pd-NWWs). The morphology, structure, and surface composition of Pd-NWWs are investigated in detail. The formation mechanism of Pd-NWWs is defined in accordance with the experimental observation and discussion. Physical characterization shows the as-synthesized products are a three-dimensionally interconnected network with one-dimensional Pd nanowires as building blocks, and the Pd nanowires grow from the primary spherical Pd nanocrystals via the oriented attachment. In comparison with commercial Pd black, the amino-functionalized Pd-NWWs exhibit remarkably improved catalytic activity for the hexavalent chromium reduction at room temperature. Abstract:Palladium, a kind of platinum group metal, owns catalytic capacity for a variety of hydrogenations. In this study, Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) were generated through enzymatic recovery by microbes of activated sludge at various biomass/Pd, and further used for the Cr(VI) reduction. The results show that biomass had a strong adsorption capacity for Pd(II), which was 17.25 mg Pd/g sludge. The XRD and TEM-EDX results confirmed the existence of PdNPs associated with microbes (bio-Pd). The increase of biomass had little effect on the reduction rate of Pd(II), but it could cause decreasing particle size and shifting location of Pd(0) with the better dispersion degree on the cell surface. In the Cr(VI) reduction experiments, Cr(VI) was first adsorbed on bio-Pd with hydrogen and then reduced using active hydrogen as electron donor. Biomass improved the catalytic activity of PdNPs. When the biomass/Pd (w/w) ratio increased to six or higher, Cr(VI) reduction achieved maximum rate that 50 mg/L of Cr(VI) could be rapidly reduced in one minute.

Abstract:The Cr(VI) pollutants are known to cause serious harm to the environment and human health. Chemical reduction is one of the efficient methods to eliminate the Cr(VI) pollutants. We synthesized polyvinylpyrrolidone-stabilized palladium (PVP-Pd) colloidal nanoparticles to catalytically reduce Cr(VI). The PVP-Pd colloidal nanocatalysts were active on the complete reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) with a rate of 22.2 molCr/(molPd min) or a turn-over frequency (TOF) of 1,329 h−1 at pH 4.0 and 45 °C. Magnetic Fe3O4 support was used for recycling the palladium nanocatalysts. The as-prepared Pd–Fe3O4 catalyst was easy to be separated from the reaction system by simply applying an external magnet and it exhibited efficient and stable reduction performance even after eight recycles.

Abstract:Through theoretical calculations, we show that integrating Pd with WO 3 nanomaterials can trigger the interfacial electron transfer from Pd to WO 3 , thus upshifting the d -band center (ε d ) of Pd to optimize toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction. The elevated ε d can derive stronger chemisorption capability toward crucial formic acid molecules, notably lowering the thermodynamic energy barrier and speeding up the kinetics process. In order to realize this concept, we synthesized unique Pd/WO 3 nanofibers by loading Pd nanoparticles onto electrospun WO 3 nanofibers through an in situ photodeposition technique. Extensive structural, morphological, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) characterizations confirm the successful formation of the above nanofibers. As anticipated, the as-designed Pd/WO 3 nanofibers exhibit enhanced catalytic performance in the Cr(VI) reduction with a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 62.12 min −1 , surpassing a series of reported Pd-based catalysts. Such nanofibrous WO 3 -induced electronic modification of Pd with a high specific area leads to catalytic enhancement, providing a novel model for catalyst design.

Abstract:Recently, biosynthetic metal nanoparticles have attracted much attention due to their simplicity and environmental harmfulness. Shewanella is a typical dissimilatory metal‐reducing bacterium and widely studied strain for bio‐nanomaterials. In this study, mutant strains lacking different surface substances which may be involved in EPS‐induced pathway or biofilm synthesis and the wild strain Shewanella oneidensis MR‐1 were selected to prepare biocatalysts in order to attain a deeper understanding of bio‐nanomaterials at the genetic level. Additionally, the absence of biofilms has been identified as a crucial factor in the formation of high‐quality bio‐Pd. Because the absence of biofilm can minimize metal agglomeration, resulting in uniform particle size dispersion. These findings provide valuable mechanical insights into the generation of biogenic metal nanoparticles and show potential industrial and environmental applications, especially in accelerating oxygen reduction reactions.

Abstract:The biological synthesis of palladium nanoparticle (BioPd) by S.oneidensis MR-1 and its ability to reduce 2-chloronitrobenzene (2-CNB) were investigated.The results showed that BioPd reduced 2-CNB through cooperation with S.oneidensis MR-1,and heavily depended on the quinone dehydrogenase CymA in S.oneidensis MR-1.The reduction products included in nitrobenzene,chloroaniline and aniline,and aniline was the final product,indicating that the synergistically catalytic system could achieve dechlorination and nitro-reduction simultaneously.The reduction of 2-CNB could be described as the second-order kinetics.

Abstract:Coenzyme A (CoA), as a cofactor of enzymes in bacteria, is involved in various reactions of intermediary metabolism owing to its thiol groups. Herein we develop a facile CoA-assisted approach for the green synthesis of nonspherical Pd nanoparticles (NPs) with grain boundaries, which potentially serve as the catalytic hot spots. As-prepared CoA-Pd nanocomposites were applied for the catalytic reduction of highly toxic chromium (VI) by using formic acid (FA) as the reductant with the highest reduction rate of 2.45 mmol mg(-1) min(-1 )(50 degrees C), which is superior to recently reported homogenous and heterogeneous Pd-based catalysts. Through the characterizations by UV-vis, FTIR, TEM, XRD and XPS in combination with DFT calculations, CoA plays an essential role in regulating the growth of Pd NPs, resulting in the formation of nonspherical morphology at high [Na2PdCl4]/ [CoA]. The catalytic activity of CoA-Pd was also assessed for the hydrogenation reduction of p-nitrophenol and the degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in the presence of formic acid. This strategy expands eco-friendly synthetic techniques to design highly efficient nanocatalysts to meet the requirement of catalytic reduction of Cr (VI) and other types of FA-mediated hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:Background Biopalladium (bioPd(0)) nanoparticles on Klebsiella Pneumoniae ECU-15 were synthesized mainly on the microorganism's surface. Data suggest that the resistance of mass transfer around the cell surface region plays a critical role in bioPd(0) synthesis process. However, the mechanisms for its role remains elusive. Results The experimental results indicated that 1) diffusion resistance existed around the microorganism's cell in reaction vessel and 2) fluid shear stress affected the mass transfer rates differently according to its strength and thus had varying effects on the bioPd(0) synthesis. More than 97.9 ± 1.5% Chromium(VI)(Cr(VI)) (384 μM) was reduced to Cr(III) within 20 min with 5% Pd/bioPd(0) as catalyst, which was generated by the K. Pneumoniae ECU-15, and the catalytic performance of Pd/bioPd(0) was stable over 6 months. The optimal condition of bioreduction of Pd(II) to Pd(0) was determined at the Kolmogorov eddy length of 7.33 ± 0.5 μm and lasted for 1 h in the extended reduction process after the usual adsorption and reduction process. Conclusions It is concluded that a high bioPd(0) catalytic activity can be achieved by controlling the fluid shear stress intensity in an extended reduction process in the bioreactor.
Facile synthesis of porous PdCu nanoboxes for efficient chromium (VI) reduction

Abstract:Hollow porous nanostructures offer a multitude of advantages for heterogeneous catalysts over solid nanoparticle catalysts. Herein, we reported the facile synthesis of PdCu nanoboxes with porous shells through a Cu2O template-assisted strategy, enabling efficient chromium-VI (Cr(vi)) reduction. The synthesis procedure involved the formation of well-defined Cu2O nanocubes and the transformation of partial Cu2O into a PdCu shell by a galvanic reaction. The structure/composition and formation mechanism of the PdCu nanoboxes were investigated in detail. When used as a heterogeneous catalyst, in the presence of formic acid (HCOOH), the PdCu nanobox demonstrated an excellent catalytic effect for Cr(vi) reduction with low activation energy (Ea = 47.8 kJ mol(-1)) and a high kinetic constant (k = 0.274 min(-1)). Moreover, the PdCu nanoboxes were recycled ten times without significant reduction in the transformation efficiency. The improved catalysis originated from the unique structure-/composition-dependent merits of the porous PdCu nanoboxes, which effectively promoted the dehydrogenation decomposition of HCOOH molecules.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Palladium nanoparticles can act as a shuttle to accelerate the extracellular electron transfer (EET) by exoelectrogens. Through the EET process, microorganisms drive the redox cycle of many substances. The palladium nanoparticle has a variety of catalytic activities and activities can be significantly improved by combining with the active effects of microorganisms. RESULTS In this study, Staphylococcus saprophyticus JJ‐1 was utilized as a biological template carrier to synthesize palladium nanoparticles that were immobilized on the bacterial surface. The morphology and composition of palladium were characterized by various techniques including transmission electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the hydrogenation activity of the synthesized Pd was tested at room temperature and atmospheric pressure using methyl orange as a model pollutant. Electrochemical characterization was carried out by cyclic voltammetry and potentiostatic measurements. The research demonstrated that palladium nanoparticles acted as both electronic mediators and catalysts in the dye reduction process, while S. saprophyticus JJ‐1 contributed to stabilizing nanoparticles and electrochemical activity. The synergistic effect between these two components significantly enhances MO degradation efficiency. CONCLUSION This study presented an energy‐saving method to synthesize an integrated catalyst based on the synergistic interaction between biomass and nanoparticles, offering a novel approach for developing environmentally friendly, cost‐effective, and efficient integrated catalysts. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Abstract:Efficient immobilization of catalytic active metal nanoparticles into porous supporting materials is of important scientific interest in practice. We report on the fabrication of novel bionanocomposites, comprising a three-dimensional porous eggshell membrane (ESM) bioscaffold decorated with catalytic active metal (Pt, Pd) nanoparticles, to reduce highly toxic Cr(VI). Procyanidin (Pro), a natural plant polyphenol with abundant phenolic hydroxyls, was first covalently grafted on the ESM fiber surface to provide stable binding sites for chelating metal precursors. Highly dispersed Pt and Pd nanoparticles with small size were facilely generated and stably immobilized onto the surface of ESM followed by NaBH4 reduction. These metal nanoparticle-incorporating ESM composites were active heterogeneous catalysts for the reduction of toxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by employing formic acid as the reducing agent. Notably, it is easy to recover and recycle the catalysts, revealing the good stabilization of procyanidin-grafted ESM for nanoparticles.

Abstract:Searching efficient sustainable approaches for the metal nanoparticles (NPs) synthesis has become a research focus. Bioreduction with metal-reducing bacterium at ambient temperature provides a green route for metal NPs synthesis, especially for precious metals. In this work, activated Pd NPs were synthesized by contacting Pd2+ solution with an efficient metal-reducing Shewanella oneidensis bacterium, in which the bacterium acted as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents, and the shape and composition of the Pd NPs could be tuned with the activation of KOH at elevated temperatures. The as-activated Pd NPs showed a favorable performance toward catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP), with a remarkable apparent kinetic constant of 5.0 x 10(-3) s(-1) which was 12 times greater than that of the raw biogenic Pd NPs, even comparable to that of the commercial 5.0 wt % Pd/C. Changes of the Pd NPs aggregates, ratio of Pd to S, and surface area of the support at different temperatures and with different activation reactants were tested to explore the improvement associated with the KOH activation at elevated temperatures. Such an activation approach was also successfully applied for improving the catalytic activity of biogenic Au NPs. This work may offer a sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient approach to prepare biogenic metal nanomaterials for catalytic organic reaction or polutants removal.
One-Pot Fabrication of Hollow and Porous Pd-Cu Alloy Nanospheres and Their Remarkably Improved Catalytic Performance for Hexavalent Chromium Reduction.

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures (NMNSs) play a crucial role in many heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Hollow and porous NMNSs possess generally prominent advantages over their solid counterparts due to their unordinary structural features. In this work, we describe a facial one-pot synthesis of hollow and porous Pd-Cu alloy nanospheres (Pd-Cu HPANSs) through a polyethylenimine (PEI)-assisted oxidation-dissolution mechanism. The strong coordination interaction between CuII and PEI facilitates the oxidation-dissolution of the Cu2O nanospheres template under air conditions, which is responsible for the generation of the Pd-Cu alloy and the convenient removal of the Cu2O nanospheres template at room temperature. Compared to the commercial Pd black, the Pd-Cu HPANSs show remarkably improved catalytic activity for the reduction of K2Cr2O7 by HCOOH at room temperature, attributing to the enhanced catalytic activity of the Pd-Cu HPANSs for the dehydrogenation decomposition of HCOOH.

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) can catalyse a range of reductive chemical reactions transforming both organic and inorganic environmental pollutants. PdNPs that ranged from < 2 to 2-40 nm were synthesized using chemical methods, and bacterial biomass with/without chemical fixatives. PdNP formation was enhanced by adsorption of Pd(II) to bacterial biomass, followed by fixation with formate or glutaraldehyde. TEM-SAED analyses confirmed that the cell associated PdNPs were polycrystalline with a face-centered cubic structure. Chemically formed PdNPs possessed a higher Pd(0):Pd(II) ratio and produced structurally similar nanoparticles as the biotic systems. These PdNPs were employed to catalyze two, reductive chemical reactions, transforming 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], into 4-aminophenol and Cr(IV), respectively. In the reduction of 4-NP, the catalytic performance was directly proportional to PdNP surface area, i.e., the smallest PdNPs in formate-PdCH34 cells had the fastest rate of reaction. The mass of Pd(0) as PdNPs was the main contributor to Cr(VI) reduction; the chemically synthesized PdNPs showed the highest removal efficiency with 96% at 20 min. The use of glutaraldehyde enhanced the reduction of Pd(II) and promoted PdNPs formation, i.e., creating an artefact of fixation; however, this treatment also enhanced the catalytic performance of these PdNPs.
Catalytic Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium by a Novel Nitrogen-Functionalized Magnetic Ordered Mesoporous Carbon Doped with Pd Nanoparticles

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is a toxic water pollutant which can cause serious influence to the health of the human and animals. Therefore, developing new methods to remove hexavalent chromium in water attracts great attention of scholars. In our research, we successfully synthesized a new type of magnetic mesoporous carbon hybrid nitrogen (Fe-NMC) loaded with catalyst Pd nanoparticles (NPs), which performed excellent catalytic reduction efficiency toward Cr(VI). The characterization of Pd/Fe-NMC composite was investigated in detail using scanning electron microscope (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. According to the experimental results, we dealt with in-depth discussion and studied on the mechanism of hexavalent chromium removed by Pd/Fe-NMC composite. Furthermore, the batch experiments were conducted to investigate the catalytic reduction ability of composite. It was found that the chromium reduction process conforms to pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics model when the concentrations of chromium and sodium formate were low. It took only 20 min for the Pd/Fe-NMC composite to reach 99.8 % reduction of Cr(VI) (50 mg/L). The results suggested that the Pd/Fe-NMC composite may exhibit significantly improved catalytic activity for the hexavalent chromium reduction at industrial wastewater.
Palladium Nanoparticles As Catalysts for Reduction of Cr(VI) and Suzuki Coupling Reaction

Abstract:Herein, six kinds of PdNPs (including icosahedron, sphere, spindle, cube, rod, and wire) were synthesized via simple methods. The catalytic activities were investigated by the reduction reaction of Cr(VI) and Suzuki coupling reaction. Chemically synthesized morphologies of the six catalysis were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, etc. Pd icosahedron shows a better catalytic property than other PdNPs with a rate constants 0.42 min−1 for the reduction of Cr(VI). Moreover, the electrocatalyst shows that Pd icosahedron possesses a bigger surface area of 8.56 m2/g than other nanoparticles, which is attributed to the better catalyst. The Pd icosahedron possesses a better catalytic property, attributing to the abundant exposed {111} facets with high activity on Pd icosahedron. The catalytic activities are closely related to the surface area with the following order: icosahedrons ≥ sphere > rod > spindle > cube > wire. The Pd icosahedron catalyst represents a strong activity for Suzuki coupling reaction as well, outweighting is 80%. The results reveal that Pd icosahedron acts as an efficient catalyst compared to other PdNPs (wire, rod, sphere, spindle, and cube).
