Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and application of a novel hierarchical porous SiO2/C composite (denoted KEG) through assembling mesoporous KIT-6 onto the layers of expanded graphite (EG). The obtained KEG composite has a well-ordered cubic mesostructure, and its surface becomes smoother with the enhancement of carbon content in the composite. Simultaneously, smaller primary pore size (6.9-7.0 nm) and larger wall thickness (3.9-4.2 nm) than those of KIT-6 were found for the KEG, which is caused by the interface interactions among siliceous species, hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments of the surfactant, and the graphitic layers of EG during the synthesis. In the batch tests, the KEG composite exhibits larger adsorption capacity (Q(e) = 58 mg.g(-1) SiO2), stronger adsorption intensity (K-L = 0.91 L.mg(-1)), and faster adsorption rate (k = 0.021 g.mg(-1).min(-1)) than those of KIT-6 for the removal of methylene blue. It is proposed that the large and accessible pores and highly attachable adsorption sites of KEG are responsible for the improved adsorption efficiency and the rapid mass transfer rate.
