Abstract:The asymptotic Lyapunov stability with probability one of multi-degree-of-freedom quasi linear systems subject to multi-time-delayed feedback control and multiplicative (parametric) excitation of wide-band random process is studied. First, the multi-time-delayed feedback control forces are expressed approximately in terms of the system state variables without time delay and the system is converted into ordinary quasi linear system. Then, the averaged Itô stochastic differential equations are derived by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi linear systems and the expression for the largest Lyapunov exponent of the linearized averaged Itô equations is derived. Finally, the necessary and sufficient condition for the asymptotic Lyapunov stability with probability one of the trivial solution of the original system is obtained approximately by letting the largest Lyapunov exponent to be negative. An example is worked out in detail to illustrate the application and validity of the proposed procedure and to show the effect of the time delay in feedback control on the largest Lyapunov exponent and the stability of system.
Two-stage Method for System Identification Based on Asymptotic Theory

Abstract:A two-stage method for system identification based on asymptotic theory was proposed.Firstly, an unbiased estimation and its frequency variance were obtained by the high-order ARX model.Then each sub model was reduced by the OE structure and MDL criterion.It translated multivariable model structure selection into a simple SISO problem and realized model validation through frequency variance, which resolved the difficult problem of model order selection and model validation for the multivariable system.The use of multivariable test signal reduced time for plant test and disturbance to operation.The application results were given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the identification method.

Abstract:In this paper, the asymptotic stability with probability one of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivative damping parametrically excited by Gaussian white noises is investigated. A stochastic averaging method and the Khasminskii’s procedure are employed to evaluate the largest Lyapunov exponent, whose sign determines the stability of the system. As an example, two coupled nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivative damping is worked out to demonstrate the proposed procedure and to examine the effect of fractional order on the stochastic stability of system. In particular, the case of factional order more than 1 is studied for the first time.

Abstract:In the present paper, we consider an approximate approach for predicting the responses of the quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system with multi-time-delayed feedback control under combined Gaussian and Poisson white noise excitations. Two-step approximation is taken here to obtain the responses of such system. First, based on the property of the system solution, the time-delayed system state variables are approximated by using the system state variables without time delay. After this approximation, the system is converted to the one without time delay but with delay time as parameters. Then, stochastic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system under combined Gaussian and Poisson white noises is applied to simplify the converted system to obtain the averaged stochastic integro-differential equations and generalized Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov equations for both non-resonant and resonant cases. Finally, two examples are worked out to show the detailed procedure of proposed method for the illustrative purpose. And the influences of the time delay on the responses of the systems are also discussed. In addition, the validity of the results obtained by present method is verified by Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:Ann-degree-of-freedom quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system is first reduced to anItôequation of one-dimensional averaged Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method developed by the first author and his coworkers. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability in probability of the trivial solution of the quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system are then obtained approximately by examining the sample behaviors of the one-dimensional diffusion process of the square-root of averaged Hamiltonian at the two boundaries. A system of linearly and non-linearly coupled two non-linearly damped oscillators subject to parametric excitations of Gaussian white noises is employed as an example to illustrate the procedure, and the effects of non-linear damping and non-linear coupling on the stability are analyzed in detail.

Exact Stationary Solutions Independent of Energy for Strongly Nonlinear Stochastic Systems of Multiple Degrees of Freedom

Abstract:A new procedure is proposed to construct strongly nonlinear systems of multiple degrees of freedom subjected to parametric and/or external Gaussian white noises, whose exact stationary solutions are independent of energy. Firstly, the equivalent Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equations are derived by using exterior differentiation. The main difference between the equivalent FPK equation and the original FPK equation lies in the additional arbitrary antisymmetric diffusion matrix. Then the exact stationary solutions and the structures of the original systems can be obtained by using the coefficients of antisymmetric diffusion matrix. The obtained exact stationary solutions, which are generally independent of energy, are for the most general class of strongly nonlinear stochastic systems multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) so far, and some classes of the known ones dependent on energy belong to the special cases of them.

Abstract:The method of quasi-conservative averaging, or the stochastic averaging of energy envelope, is extended to a system with a double-well potential subjected to both the external and parametric non-white noise excitations. Instead of using the power spectral densities, the correlation functions of the excitation processes are used directly so that the averaging procedure can be performed for different types of motions appearing in the system with a double-well potential. The obtained Markov process of the energy envelope allows to carry out the dynamic analysis of the system, such as to assess the asymptotic behaviors at the boundaries, to find the probability density of the response, and to investigate the transition of the system motion between the two wells, as done in the present paper. Furthermore, the proposed procedure can be applied not only to systems with double-well potentials, but also to those with potentials of more complicated shapes.

Abstract:The exact stationary solutions of the averaged equations of stochastically and harmonically excitedndegree-of-freedom quasi-linear systems withminternal and/or external resonances are obtained as functions of bothnindependent amplitudes andmcombinations of phase angles. To make the solutions more general, the equivalent stochastic systems of the averaged equations are obtained by using the differential forms and exterior differentiation. By considering the periodic boundary conditions with respect tomcombinations of phase angles, the probability potentials of the exact stationary solutions of the equivalent stochastic systems are expanded into anm-fold harmonic series ofmcombinations of phase angles, and the exact stationary solutions are obtained for the case where the averaged equations belong to the class of stationary potential. To examples are given to illustrate the application of the proposed procedure.

Abstract:The almost sure asymptotic stability of higher-dimensional linear stochastic systems and of a special class of nonlinear stochastic systems with homogeneous drift and diffusion coefficients of order one is studied. Based on the well-known Khasminskii's theorem, a new approach for obtaining the regions of almost sure asymptotic stability and instability without evaluating the stationary probability density of the diffusion process defined on unit hypersphere is proposed. Two examples of two and three degree-of-freedom linear stochastic systems are given to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed approach combined with stochastic averaging.
Stochastic Averaging of Strongly Nonlinear Oscillators Under Combined Harmonic and Wide-Band Noise Excitations

Abstract:Physical and engineering systems are often subjected to combined harmonic and random excitations. The random excitation is often modeled as Gaussian white noise for mathematical tractability. However, in practice, the random excitation is nonwhite. This paper investigates the stationary response probability density of strongly nonlinear oscillators under combined harmonic and wide-band noise excitations. By using generalized harmonic functions, a new stochastic averaging procedure for estimating stationary response probability density of strongly nonlinear oscillators under combined harmonic and wide-band noise excitations is developed. The damping can be linear and (or) nonlinear and the excitations can be external and (or) parametric. After stochastic averaging, the system state is represented by two-dimensional time-homogeneous diffusive Markov processes. The method of reduced Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation is used to investigate the stationary response of the vibration system. A nonlinearly damped Duffing oscillator is taken as an example to show the application and validity of the method. In the case of primary external resonance, based on the stationary joint probability density of amplitude and phase difference, the stochastic jump of the Duffing oscillator and P-bifurcation as the system parameters change are examined for the first time. The agreement between the analytical results and those from Monte Carlo simulation of original system shows that the proposed procedure works quite well.

Abstract:A symplectic numerical approach to the stability analysis of nonlinear parametric excited systems with multi-degree-of-freedom is developed and the stability of a nonlinear vibration system depends on the dynamic behavior of its perturbation. The nonlinear parameter-varying differential equations for the perturbation motion are expressed in the form of Hamiltonian equations with time-varying Hamiltonian, and are converted further into the classical Hamiltonian equations with extended time-invariant Hamiltonian by augmenting the state variables. The solution to the augmented Hamiltonian equations has the symplectic structure in terms of the symplectic transformation. Then the difference equations of the symplectic Runge-Kutta algorithm with a sufficient condition are constructed, which is proved to preserve the intrinsic symplectic structure of the original solution. In particular, the symplectic Gauss-Runge-Kutta algorithm with stage 2 and order 4 is proposed and applied to the stability analysis of a nonlinear system. Unstable regions based on the nonlinear periodic-parameter perturbation equation are obtained by using the symplectic Gauss-Runge-Kutta algorithm, analytical solution method and non-symplectic conventional Runge-Kutta algorithm to verify the higher accuracy of the proposed algorithm. Unstable regions based on the nonlinear perturbation are given to illustrate the improvement over those based on the linear perturbation. The developed symplectic approach to the stability analysis can preserve the symplectic structure of the original system and is applicable to nonlinear parametric excited systems with multi-degree-of-freedom.

Abstract:A new integral inequality method is put forward to analyze the general decay stability for Markovian switching neutral stochastic functional differential systems. At first, in order to get around the dynamic analyses difficulty induced by the coinstantaneous presence of neutral term, Markovian switching and Brownian motion noise, an new integral inequality as a powerful tool is gained. Then, based on the integral inequality, general decay stability in the sense of <math>p</math>th(<math>p>0</math>) moment and the almost sure can be taken out by utilizing the nonnegative semimartingale convergence theorem and Lyapunov stability theory. The obtained results can be especially applied to two special types of neutral stochastic differential systems that have been studied in the literature. Finally, an example has been performed to verify the obtained analytical results.

Nonlinear Analysis Hybrid Systems

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of computing Lyapunov functions for asymptotic stability analysis of autonomous polynomial systems of differential equations. We propose a new semi-algebraic approach by making advantage of the local property of the Lyapunov function as well as its derivative. This is done by first constructing a semi-algebraic system and then solving this semi-algebraic system in an adaptive way. Experiment results show that our semi-algebraic approach is more efficient in practice, especially for low-order systems.

Abstract:Systems which specifications change abruptly and statistically, referred to as Markovian-jump systems, are considered in this paper. An approximate method is presented to assess the asymptotic stability, with probability one, of nonlinear, multi-degree-of-freedom, Markovian-jump quasi-nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems subjected to stochastic excitations. Using stochastic averaging and linearization, an approximate formula for the largest Lyapunov exponent of the Hamiltonian equations is derived, from which necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability are obtained for different jump rules. In a Markovian-jump system with unstable operating forms, the stability conditions prescribe limitations on time spent in each unstable form so as to render the entire system asymptotically stable. The validity and utility of this approximate technique are demonstrated by a nonlinear two-degree-of-freedom oscillator that is stochastically driven and capable of Markovian jumps.

Abstract:A systematic procedure is developed to obtain the stationary probability density for the response of a nonlinear system under parametric and external excitations of Gaussian white noises. The procedure is devised by separating the circulatory portion of the probability flow from the noncirculatory flow, thus obtaining two sets of equations that must be satisfied by the probability potential. It is shown that these equations are identical to two of the conditions established previously under the assumption of detailed balance; therefore, one remaining condition for detailed balance is superfluous. Three examples are given for illustration, one of which is capable of exhibiting limit cycle and bifurcation behaviors, while another is selected to show that two different systems under two differents sets of excitations may result in the same probability distribution for their responses.

On the algebraization of asymptotic stability analysis for differential systems

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the asymptotic stability of autonomous and non-autonomous differential systems by verifying the existence of Lyapunov functions. We start with an algebraic approach for verifying the existence of a Lyapunov function in quadratic form for autonomous systems by first formulating a semi-algebraic system and then solving such a semi-algebraic system by a semi-algebraic system solver. Then, this algebraic approach is extended to parametric autonomous systems and (parametric) non-autonomous systems by introducing quantifiers during algebraization. Experiments on some examples in the literature show the success of our approach in practice.
