Abstract:Non-dimensionalized equations and boundary conditions are presented for the torsion problem of an anisotropic body. The error of the fundamental solution cited in some boundary element books Is pointed out after an examination of the fundamental solution. Furthermore,a necessary and sufficient boundary integral equation is given for the problem and compared with the conventional boundary integral equation. Numerical results show that great errors of the boundary shear stresses obtained by the conventional boundary integral equation appear with a small error of torsion stiffness. Meanwhile,the necessary and sufficient;boundary integral equation always gives accurate results.

Abstract:This work deals with catastrophe of a spherical cavity and cavitation of a spherical cavity for Hooke material with 1/2 Poisson's ratio. A nonlinear problem, which is the Cauchy traction problem, is solved analytically. The governing equations are written on the deformed region or on the present configuration. And the conditions are described on moving boundary. A closed form solution is found. Furthermore, a bifurcation solution in closed form is given from the trivial homogeneous solution of a solid sphere. The results indicate that there is a tangent bifurcation on the displacement-load curve for a sphere with a cavity. On the tangent bifurcation point, the cavity grows up suddenly, which is a kind of catastrophe. And there is a pitchfork bifurcation on the displacement-load curve for a solid sphere. On the pitchfork bifurcation point, there is a cavitation in the solid sphere.

Abstract:Many soft nonlinear elastic materials, such as polymers, organic tissues, etc., can produce special singular deformation called cavitation under certain conditions. The study of cavitation is an important part of the effort to understand, characterize, analyze and apply the materials. In this paper, we will try to show the readers a rough picture of the computation and simulation of the cavitation phenomenon in nonlinear elasticity by a brief review on some of the representative mathematical models and theories, numerical methods and corresponding analytical and numerical results.
Stability of the catenoid for the hyperbolic vanishing mean curvature equation in 4 spatial dimensions

Abstract:We establish the asymptotic stability of the catenoid, as a nonflat stationary solution to the hyperbolic vanishing mean curvature (HVMC) equation in Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1 + (n + 1)}$ for $n = 4$. Our main result is under a ``codimension-$1$'' assumption on initial perturbation, modulo suitable translation and boost (i.e. modulation), without any symmetry assumptions. In comparison to the $n \geq 5$ case addressed by Lührmann-Oh-Shahshahani <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.05620" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.05620">arXiv:2212.05620</a>, proving catenoid stability in $4$ dimensions shares additional difficulties with its $3$ dimensional analog, namely the slower spatial decay of the catenoid and slower temporal decay of waves. To overcome these difficulties in the $n = 3$ case, the strong Huygens principle, as well as a miraculous cancellation in the source term, plays an important role in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2409.05968" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.05968">arXiv:2409.05968</a> to obtain strong late time tails. In $n = 4$ dimensions, without these special structural advantages, our novelty is to introduce an appropriate commutator vector field to derive a new hierarchy of estimates with higher $r^p$-weights so that an improved pointwise decay can be established. We expect this to be applicable for proving improved late time tails of other quasilinear wave equations in even dimensions or wave equations with inverse square potential.

Stability of the 3-dimensional catenoid for the hyperbolic vanishing mean curvature equation

Abstract:We prove that the $3$-dimensional catenoid is asymptotically stable as a solution to the hyperbolic vanishing mean curvature equation in Minkowski space, modulo suitable translation and boost (i.e., modulation) and with respect to a codimension one set of initial data perturbations. The modulation and the codimension one restriction on the initial data are necessary (and optimal) in view of the kernel and the unique simple eigenvalue, respectively, of the stability operator of the catenoid. The $3$-dimensional problem is more challenging than the higher (specifically, $5$ and higher) dimensional case addressed in the previous work of the authors with J.~Lührmann, due to slower temporal decay of waves and slower spatial decay of the catenoid. To overcome these issues, we introduce several innovations, such as a proof of Morawetz- (or local-energy-decay-) estimates for the linearized operator with slowly decaying kernel elements based on the Darboux transform, a new method to obtain Price's-law-type bounds for waves on a moving catenoid, as well as a refined profile construction designed to capture a crucial cancellation in the wave-catenoid interaction. In conjunction with our previous work on the higher dimensional case, this paper outlines a systematic approach for studying other soliton stability problems for $(3+1)$-dimensional quasilinear wave equations.

On the Classical Solutions of Two Dimensional Inviscid Rotating Shallow Water System

Abstract:We prove global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions for two dimensional inviscid rotating shallow water system with small initial data subject to the zero relative vorticity condition. One of the key steps is a reformulation of the problem into a symmetric quasilinear Klein–Gordon system with quadratic nonlinearity, for which the global existence of classical solutions is then proved with combination of the vector field approach and the normal form method. We also probe the case of general initial data and reveal a lower bound for the lifespan that is almost inversely proportional to the size of the initial relative vorticity.

Abstract:We consider the system of equations modeling the free motion of a rigid body with a cavity filled by a viscous (Navier-Stokes) liquid. We give a rigorous proof of Zhukovskiy's Theorem, which states that in the limit of time going to infinity, the relative fluid velocity tends to zero and the rigid velocity of the full structure tends to a steady rotation around one of the principle axes of inertia. The existence of global weak solutions for this system was established previously. In particular, we prove that every weak solution of this type is subject to Zhukovskiy's Theorem. Independently of the geometry and of parameters, this shows that the presence of fluid prevents precession of the body in the limit. In general, we cannot predict which axis will be attained, but we show stability of the largest axis and provide criteria on the initial data which are decisive in special cases.

Abstract:We prove the existence of both local and global smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem in the whole space and the periodic problem in the n -dimensional torus for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd-B type in the case of near- equilibrium initial data. The results hold in both two- and three-dimensional spaces. The results and methods presented in this paper are also valid for a wide range of elastic complex fluids, such as magnetohydrodynamics, liquid crystals, and mixture problems.

Abstract:An exact two-dimensional rotation–strain model describing the motion of Hookean incompressible viscoelastic materials is constructed by the polar decomposition of the deformation tensor. The global existence of classical solutions is proved under smallness assumptions only on the size of the initial strain tensor. The proof of global existence utilizes the weak dissipative mechanism of motion, which is revealed by passing the partial dissipation to the whole system.

Abstract:An iso-parametric finite element method is introduced in this paper to study cavitations and configurational forces in nonlinear elasticity. The method is shown to be highly efficient in capturing the cavitation phenomenon, especially in dealing with multiple cavities of various sizes and shapes. Our numerical experiments verified and extended, for a class of nonlinear elasticity materials, the theory of Sivaloganathan and Spector on the configurational forces of cavities, as well as justified a crucial hypothesis of the theory on the cavities. Numerical experiments on configurational forces indicate that, in the case of a round reference configuration with radially symmetric stretch on the boundary, the cavitation centered at the origin is the unique energy minimizer. Numerical experiments also reveal an interesting size effect phenomenon: for macro-scale pre-existing-defects, the cavitation process is dominated by the relatively larger pre-existing-defects, and the cavitation tendency of much smaller pre-existing-defects is significantly suppressed.

Abstract:We consider a viscoelastic body occupying a smooth bounded domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ under the effect of a volumic traction force g . The macroscopic displacement vector from the equilibrium configuration is denoted by u . Inertial effects are considered; hence, the equation for u contains the second-order term u tt . On a part Γ D of the boundary of Ω, the body is fixed and no displacement may occur; on a second part Γ N ⊂ ∂ Ω , the body can move freely; on a third portion Γ C ⊂ ∂ Ω , the body is in adhesive contact with a solid support. The boundary forces acting on Γ C due to the action of elastic stresses are responsible for delamination, i.e., progressive failure of adhesive bonds. This phenomenon is mathematically represented by a non-linear ordinary differential equation settled on Γ C and describing the evolution of the delamination order parameter z . Following the lines of a new approach outlined in Bonetti et al. (2015, arXiv:1503.01911) and based on duality methods in Sobolev–Bochner spaces, we define a suitable concept of weak solution to the resulting system of partial differential equations. Correspondingly, we prove an existence result on finite-time intervals of arbitrary length.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the global existence of strong solutions for the 3D incompressible inhomogeneous viscoelastic system. We do not assume the "initial state" assumption and the "div-curl" structure inspired by the works [59,61]. It is a key to transform the original system into a suitable dissipative system by introducing a new effective tensor, which is useful to establish a series of energy estimates with appropriate time weights.

Abstract:With the purpose of investigating a linear elastic solid containing a dilute distribution of cylindrical and prismatic holes parallel to the torsion axis, the full-field solution for an infinite elastic plane containing a single void and subject to torsion is derived. The obtained solution is exploited to derive the analytic expressions for the Stress Concentration Factor (SCF) related to the presence of an elliptical hole, for the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) for hypocycloidal-shaped hole and star-shaped cracks, and for the Notch Stress Intensity Factor (NSIF) for star-shaped polygons. Special sets of the void location are obtained for which peculiar mechanical behaviours are displayed, such as the stress annihilation at some points along the boundary of elliptical voids and the stress singularity removal at the cusps/points of hypocycloidal shaped/isotoxal star-shaped polygonal voids. By means of finite element simulations it is finally shown that the presented closed-form expressions for the stress intensification provide reliable predictions even for finite domain realizations and, in particular, the infinite-plane solution remains highly accurate when the size of smooth and non-smooth external boundary is greater than twice and five times the void dimension, respectively. Under these geometrical conditions, the derived analytical expressions represent a valid 'guide tool' in mechanical design.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, Volume 84, Issue 4, Page 1818-1844, August 2024. For problems in the Calculus of Variations that exhibit the Lavrentiev phenomenon, it is known that a repulsion property may hold, that is, if one approximates the global minimizer in these problems by smooth functions, then the approximate energies will blow up. Thus, standard numerical schemes, like the finite element method, may fail when applied directly to these types of problems. In this paper we prove that a repulsion property holds for variational problems in three-dimensional elasticity that exhibit cavitation. In addition, we propose a numerical scheme that circumvents the repulsion property, which is an adaptation of the Modica and Mortola functional for phase transitions in liquids, in which the phase function is coupled, via the determinant of the deformation gradient, to the stored energy functional. We show that the corresponding approximations by this method satisfy the lower bound [math]–convergence property in the multidimensional, nonradial, case. The convergence to the actual cavitating minimizer is established for a spherical body, in the case of radial deformations.

Abstract:A dual-parametric finite element method is introduced in this paper for the computation of singular minimizers in the 2D cavitation problem in nonlinear elasticity. The method overcomes the difficulties, such as the mesh entanglement and material interpenetration, generally encountered in the finite element approximation of problems with extremely large expansionary deformation. Numerical experiments show that the method is highly efficient in the computation of cavitation problems. Numerical experiments are also conducted on discrete problems without the radial symmetry to show the validity of the method to more general settings and the potential of its application to the study of mechanism of cavity nucleation in nonlinear elastic materials.
