Abstract:In a background of low-carbon and green development in medium- and small-sized cities,the paper considers the integrated land uses as the basis for travel accessibility.Drawn from information obtained in resident surveys,the paper proposes four measurement indicators,including complex demand,integrated scale,travel mode and travel time.The features of the four indicators are described according to the current situation in China.and the accessibility model based on integrated land-use system is constructed based on Graph Theory,GIS analysis and modeling. At the end,the paper explains the application of the model in the planning practice in Qujiang in Zhejiang province.
Using Open Source Data to Measure Street Walkability and Bikeability in China: A Case of Four Cities

Abstract:Whether people would choose to walk or ride a bike for their daily travel is affected by how desirable the environment is for walking and biking. To better inform urban planning and design practices, studies on measuring walkability and bikeability have emerged in western countries over the last decade. However, such efforts are still rare in developing countries, partially due to the scarcity of urban data. Utilizing open source data, this paper puts forward a methodology to comprehensively and objectively measure street walkability and bikeability in China. The methodology was applied to four Chinese cities: Tianjin, Chongqing, Kunming, and Shijiazhuang. Analyses showed the following results: (1) city centers tend to have higher walkability than periphery areas; (2) a preliminary bikeable street network exists in most cities (except mountainous cities), but the prevalence of bike lanes on streets is much lower than that of sidewalks; (3) the problem of illegal parking on both sidewalks and bike lanes is severe, especially in city centers; (4) biking safety and comfort is compromised due to a lack of physically separated bike lanes; and (5) the street wall continuity varies from place to place whereas the street network in traditional city centers is much denser than newly developed car-oriented areas. The end of the paper provides corresponding policy implications.
Comprehensive walkability assessment of urban pedestrian environments using big data and deep learning techniques

Abstract:Assessing street walkability is a critical agenda in urban planning and multidisciplinary research, as it facilitates public health, community cohesion, and urban sustainability. Existing evaluation systems primarily focus on objective measurements, often neglecting subjective assessments and the diverse walking needs influenced by different urban spatial elements. This study addresses these gaps by constructing a comprehensive evaluation framework that integrates both subjective and objective dimensions, combining three neighbourhood indicators: Macro-Scale Index, Micro-Scale Index, and Street Walking Preferences Index. A normalization weighting method synthesizes these indicators into a comprehensive index. We applied this framework to assess the street environment within Beijing's Fifth Ring Road. The empirical results demonstrate that: (1) The framework reliably reflects the distribution of walkability. (2) The three indicators show both similarities and differences, underscoring the need to consider the distinct roles of community and street-level elements and the interaction between subjective and objective dimensions. (3) In high-density cities with ring-road development patterns, the Macro-Scale Index closely aligns with the Comprehensive Index, demonstrating its accuracy in reflecting walkability. The proposed framework and findings offer new insights for street walkability research and theoretical support for developing more inclusive, sustainable and walkable cities.

Abstract:The study of walkability is of great significance to the construction of healthy cities. In this paper, taking 1283 articles of walkability, which were included in Web of Science, as the research object. This paper adopts to analysis the research progress by using the method of scientometrics and knowledge networks analysis. Objectively and systematically analyze the research progress of walkability abroad from the aspects of publication overview, knowledge foundation, research direction and hot spots, etc. It is found that foreign researches on walkability mainly include three core directions: walkability and physical activity, walkability evaluation, walkability and urban design. Among them, walkability and physical activity orientation have been studied from various perspectives, such as various groups, various environmental types, different behavioral patterns and various chronic diseases. With the increasingly prominent urbanization problems and the rapid development of new technologies, multiple data, new methods and interdisciplinary cooperation will actively promote the vigorous development of walking suitability research.

Abstract:This project examines and discusses the spatial features that influence pedestrian permeability in central Hangzhou, China. It acknowledges the multifactorial nature of walkability and highlights the critical and complex role of pedestrian permeability in assessing walking environment. A descriptive indicator bundle is built to examine the permeability of the walking patterns in six study areas around subway transfer stations in the city of Hangzhou. To achieve an inclusive understanding of the walking environment in the given areas, the investigation employed indicators of intersection density, space syntax, walk shed, modified pedestrian route directness and area-weighted average perimeter to measure the different layers and attributes of pedestrian permeability. The results indicate that the walking conditions identified in this study are generally poor and those in the old city centre have relatively higher permeability than those in new built-up areas, and none of the cases is decisively permeable for walking in all three dimensions of spatial features (i.e. constitution, configuration and composition). The comparison of the metrics also suggest that pedestrian permeability involves multiple attributes and should be assessed by a collaboration of complementary measures rather than an assembly of single ones.

Abstract:The improvement of walking environment quality can effectively alleviate the traffic pressure of the city, which is conducive to the environment construction of the low-carbon city. The measurement of the pedestrian environment is an important premise of urban planning and construction, and an important indicator to measure social ecology and pedestrian safety. From the perspective of spatial syntax, this paper selects four parameter values, namely connection value, global integration degree, local integration degree and comprehensibility degree, to quantitatively analyses the spatial structure and road network characteristics of blocks, and to explore the walkability of blocks from the topological structure itself. The empirical research object is Shanghai Old City area, which is the cradle of Shanghai-style culture and the window to show the historical accumulation and traditional culture of Shanghai to foreign tourists. Through the research and analysis, it provides a theoretical basis for further optimizing the walking experience of historical districts and updating the planning and design of road space.

Abstract:The built environment is an important factor affecting physical activity, especially walkability. Walkability is used to characterize the user friendliness of outdoor physical activity. However, studies on walkability and physical activity are mainly concentrated on low-density Western cities. Study on the walkability of high-density cities in Asia, especially with the elderly, is seriously lacking. And walkability is often used as a composite indicator. This study mainly re-examines the relationship between the common indicators of walkability (population density, street connectivity, land-use mix, and retail density), transport-related walking, and leisure-time walking with older adults in China's megacities. Twelve housing estates in Wuhan were selected for study areas. We explored the association between the walking activities of 1,161 elderly people (≥60 years old) and the indicators of walkability in their neighborhoods. Socio-demographic characteristics were controlled in the multilevel logistic regression models of the built environment walking associations. We found that there was no significant correlation between the four indicators of walkability and transport-related walking. Street connectivity is significantly positively correlated with the participants' leisure-time walking (OR = 1.499, 95% CI = 1.068~2.103), and there was no significant correlation between the other indicator of walkability and leisure-time walking. The results show that there was no statistical correlation between walkability and transport-related walking in the elderly, and only one indicator was related to leisure-time walking. It is extremely important to re-examine the characteristics of built environments and elderly walking activities in high-density cities. Only by implementing effective intervention strategies in different urban backgrounds can cities move toward a more active and healthier path.

Abstract:The significant effect of walking on urban sustainability has attracted worldwide attention. More and more walkability evaluation studies have been conducted in recent years. In this paper, we revised the evaluation method for WalkScore via introducing street greenery and applied the revised method in Chengdu. The application results reveal that streets in residential areas are associated with greater WalkScore, in comparing with those in business areas. In addition, streets being closer to the city center, sub centers, subway stations and shopping centers have greater WalkScore values as well.

Abstract:Urban sprawl and increasing population density in urban centers create the challenge to finding ways of sustainable transportation solutions that preserve the convenience of residents while reducing emissions. Therefore, walkability is a core urban design element because of being advantageous onto three fronts: health, livability, and sustainability. Adopting walkability as urban solution relieves conceptual and practical tensions between the individualistic interests manifested in the desire to own and use private cars, and the need to reduce transportation-based consumption. This review advocates that long-term health benefits from walking and physical activity are the premier incentive to repurpose our cities to be more sustainable and more walking friendly, and spark behavioral change into reducing car dependency for all daily transportations. The review inspects physical elements of the built environment that make the walking trip feasible and desirable, such as connectivity, accessibility, and closeness of destination points, presence of greenness and parks, commercial retail, and proximity to transit hubs and stations. Hence, this review explores a few popular walkability evaluation indices and frameworks that employ subjective, objective, and/or distinctive methods within variant environmental, cultural, and national context. There is no unified universal standardized walkability theory despite the need for rigorous evaluation tools for policy makers and developers. Furthermore, there is a lack of emphasis on air quality and thermal stress while approaching walkability, despite being important elements in the walking experience. Research opportunities in the field of walkability can leverage location tracking from smart devices and identify the interaction patterns of pedestrians with other transportation modes, especially for those with fundamental movement challenges such as wheelchair users.

Abstract:Walkability has increasingly been recognized as an important factor for sustainable urban development that, however, has seldom been investigated in rapid urbanizing cities, especially in the Asian context. This paper assessed walkability in Futian District in the central area of Shenzhen, which has undergone very rapid urbanization within a short period of time. Walkability was assessed for 2013 and 2018 using a walkability index adapted from Walk Score. It was compared with housing prices of 215 randomly selected residential buildings, to further explore the relationships between walkability and residential estate value, provided as one practical application of the assessment of walkability in urban management. Our results show that Futian District has low walkability level, although walkability has been generally improved from 2013 to 2018. A high spatial variation of walkability level within this area was observed in both years. Overall, there was a negative relationship between walkability and housing prices (significant only in 2018), which is inconsistent with studies elsewhere. The results suggest that the housing prices in Futian District are more strongly influenced by other factors rather than by walkability. In addition, the ability of the walkability model to explicitly delineate spatial variation of walkability level makes it a powerful tool to be applied in urban planning and management. Results of this study also have practical applications, which can be used as a reference for residents' home selection and enable them to make informed decisions in selecting walkable neighborhoods with acceptable prices.

Abstract:Evaluating the walking suitability of urban streets is an important basis for creating a quality street environment. Based on the spatial properties of streets and human behavior perception, this study constructs a walking suitability evaluation method based on “dynamic-flow” and “static-frame” of streets, and measures it in five dimensions: connectivity of spatial structure, connectivity of transportation modes, integration of functional facilities, safety of street space and comfort of street environment. Taking Nanjing as an example, the results show that the overall walking suitability of streets in the main urban area is good, but there is still room for further improvement in the connectivity of transportation modes and the safety of street space. New neighborhoods and remote roads in the city are the areas where the street walking environment needs to be improved, which should be paid attention to in the future renovation. The evaluation results can be used as a reference for proposing targeted strategies in urban design.
The Large-Scale Calculation of" Walk Score" of Main Cities in China

Abstract:This research optimizes the" Walk Score" algorithm from Walkscore. com, which ranges from0 to 100, and uses it to calculate the walk score for more than 700,000 streets in 287 main cities (at or above prefecture-level) in China. In addition, the research analyzes the walk score at the street level and the city level. The results show that although the walkability is generally good at the country level, it is polarized when it comes to the city level and within the cities. What's more, street walk score, function density, function mix and other related factors all have skewed distribution, and the largest positive correlation happens between function mix and junction density. Lastly, western cities and eastern coastal cities have relatively higher average walk scores, comparing to those in the northern and northwestern regions; provincial capitals and sub-provincial cities have relatively higher walk scores in comparison with municipalities and prefecture-level cities. Furthermore, a Walk Score visualization platform was created to provide street-level walk score lookups. Government officials and scientists can use it to learn about walkability and its related measurements, and hence improve the policy related to the walking system.
Measuring Perceived Walkability at the City Scale Using Open Data

Abstract:The walkability of the built environment has been shown to be critical to the health of residents, and open data have been widely used to assess walkability. However, previous research has focused on the relationship between the built environment and walking behavior rather than perceived walkability, and there is a lack of systematic research on walkability at the urban scale using open data. This paper presents a methodological framework for systematically measuring and assessing perceived walkability at the urban scale, considering general and specific features. The walkability indices are obtained using variables from open data or calculated automatically through machine learning and algorithms to ensure they can be evaluated at a larger urban scale. The proposed method is applied to Harbin, China, to assess the perceived walkability of streets using hundreds of thousands of street view images and points of interest obtained from open data. The results are compared with a subjective evaluation of walkability to validate the proposed method. The results demonstrate that measures of the urban built environment can describe perceived walkability. Thus, the proposed framework shows promise for assessing the walkability of urban spaces, supporting policy proposals, and establishing design guidelines for optimising urban spaces.

Abstract:Improvement of the walkability of the 15-min community life circle can enhance convenience for residents to obtain daily service facilities. In this paper, by obtaining the Point of Interest (POI) data of daily facilities used by Shanghai residents, we calculate the walk scores of community residents within 15-min walking distance using the walkability assessment tool and analyze the results with population density for spatial correlation. The results show that communities with high walk scores are concentrated in central areas, with low walk scores are scattered in the suburbs of the city. Walking scores are high for access from communities to bus stops and commercial services but low for access to parks and primary schools. The formation of a compact and accessible spatial layout can significantly improve the walkability of the community. Walkability is not only related to the construction of facilities in terms of quantity and space but is also influenced by the degree of spatial clustering in the community. It needs to be reasonably configured in conjunction with the spatial distribution of the community in order to effectively improve the utilization of facilities. Finally, community walkability is significantly and positively correlated with population density.

Abstract:Green space accessibility, which relates to the provision of public goods and services to urban residents, is central to addressing many sustainability issues in urban greening practice. As global cities are growing rapidly, it raises public debates on whether larger cities can provide more accessible green space. In this study, we investigated the correlation between multiple facets of urban scale feature and green space accessibility. To do so, we used a real-time navigation approach to map green space accessibility for 106 Chinese cities, which was consequently used to examine its correlation with urban scale features based on multiscale geographically weighted regression. The results reveal a similar pattern of decreasing green space accessibility from urban cores to peripheries in Chinese cities. Coastal cities and provincial capitals have a larger coverage of good green space accessibility (15 min and 15-30 min). Urban scale features, including population size, annual income, administrative hierarchy, public budget, and planning strategy, are positively related to green space accessibility, supporting the idea that larger cities tend to enjoy better access to green space. This finding may be attributed to the impacts of institutional role and economic power. However, urban area is negatively correlated with green space accessibility due to the prevalence of sprawling development in Chinese cities. This study can provide insights that governors and planners can apply hierarchical decision-making in planning green spaces according to the features of urban scale.

Abstract:With the rapid economic growth in China over the past three decades, urban development has been evolved from simple to optimized expansion in many coastal cities. Urban revitalization has become the main theme during the second phase of the construction boom. In the thick of globalization, how to inject new vitality into the old, historical building blocks while preserving the traditional image of cities that lost in the process of modernization has become the strategic measure by which China tries to avoid similarity of all the cities. In this paper, taking the city of Hangzhou as the model, the author identifies the vernacular of walking grey space, "Langpeng", a spatial typology consisting of roofs on the street. By analyzing the factors such as climate change and commercial values, and summarizing variation applications of the typology, this paper asserts that Langpeng will become an important component of the city's urban and economic revitalization.

Abstract:The ongoing discourse on air quality and climate changes positions walkability as a pivotal point of sustainable urban planning. Urban studies examine a city’s walkability in terms of pedestrian flows, design qualities, and street network topology, leaving walkability comparative frameworks under development. Building on the space syntax theory, this research introduces a “walkability compass”, a four spatial indicator-designed tool for city walkability assessment and comparison. The tools are being tested on eight Baltic region cities: Vilnius, Kaunas (LT), Malmö (SE), Riga (LV), Tallinn (ES), Gdansk, Bialystok, Lublin (PL). The nine-step method framework integrates four indexes: Gravity (Gr), Reach (Re), Straightness (St), and Population density (Pop). The “walkability compass” results reveal significant Re and St correlations; thus, visual and cultural aspects become the main factors in pedestrian-friendly cities. The spatial pattern typology has matched similar cities (Malmö and Kaunas) to work closely on sustainable urban planning development. In all case studies, specific walkability zones were mapped, but the Gr zones turned out to be the most compact ones (the Z-score of Gr was ranged from 355.4 to 584; other indexes oscillated between 209.4 and 542.6). The walkability mapping results are publicly shared via WebMap to stimulate the participatory discussion on case studies cities further development.

Walkability Perceptions and Gender Differences in Urban Fringe New Towns: A Case Study of Shanghai

Abstract:Urban fringe areas, characterized by relatively larger community sizes and lower population densities compared to central areas, may lead to variations in walkability as well as gender differences, such as safety perception. While objective measurements have received considerable attention, further research is needed to comprehensively assess subjective perceptions of walking in the urban periphery. As a case study, we evaluated survey responses of community perceptions of "Imageability", "Enclosure", "Human scale", "Complexity" and "Safety" of Shanghai's five new towns, comparing these with responses from the central area in terms of gender difference, and analyzed influencing factors and prediction performance of machine learning (ML) models. We developed a TrueSkill-based rating system to dynamically collect audits of street view images (SVIs) from professional students and used the result to integrate with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Vision (CV), Clustering analysis, and ML algorithm for further investigation. Results show that most of the new towns' communities are perceived as moderately walkable or higher, with the city center's community exhibiting the best walkability perceptions in general. Male and female perceptions of the "Human scale" and the factors that affect it differ little, but there are significant disparities in the other four perceptions. The best-performing ML models were effective at variable explanations and generalizations, with Random Forest Regression (RFR) performing better on more perception predictions. Responses also suggest that certain street design factors, such as street openness, can positively influence walkability perceptions of women and could be prioritized in new town development and urban renewal for more inclusive and walkable cities.

Abstract:Walking is the primary travel mode for daily errands, leisure, and accessing local services, particularly for most seniors. Sufficient and diverse facilities within walking distance help improve seniors' well-being. Countries today face the challenge of providing enough facilities for more seniors and adopt some possible solutions, such as China's 15-minute community life circle. Focused on Jiande, a medium-sized city in southeast China, we propose an assessment framework with three dimensions: availability, diversity, and balance among medical, living, and leisure facilities. Using GIS network analysis, this study reveals disparities in facility provision at the household-level between earlier and newer developed urban areas, which are closely related to geographical factors and gated communities. This is common in Chinese cities, suggesting the cumulative effects of urban development sequences. To alleviate and prevent serious service inequity, we propose the following two strategies to achieve an equally walkable city: increasing landscape services to overcome geographical obstacles and implementing open-gated community strategies. Furthermore, the limitations of relying solely on big data to calculate walking routes were noted. This diagnostic framework for assessing city environments for seniors is straightforward yet comprehensive and potentially promotes cooperation between planning professionals, policymakers, and the public.

Abstract:Stimulating more citizens to walk plays an essential role in building a healthy city. This paper explores the mismatch between walkability and walking behavior, using mobile phone data, street view images, and various sources of open data. Using Shenzhen as our case study, we identified walking trips of 6 months in 2021 from cellular mobile data, taking the rule-based heuristics approach. We collected ground truth GPS data to validate the walking trip extraction method. Open data and deep learning enabled quantifying walkability from the perspective of four pedestrian needs: safety, convenience, continuity, and attractiveness. We employed geospatial techniques to identify the mismatch areas between walkability and walking behavior in the city. We also explored the spatially varying effects of walkability on walking behavior. Our results showed that the mismatch areas with high-level walking trips but low-level walkability mainly occurred in the fringe areas of the central business district (CBD) and subcenters that require prioritizing more interventions. Moreover, walkability showed strong effects on walking trips in the inner suburbs. For the four aspects of our walkability framework, safety and convenience had greater positive effects on walking trips in suburbs than in urban areas. Continuity promotes walking trips mainly in the city's western sector. The positive effect of attractiveness on walking trips clustered in the central and western parts of the city. Based on the findings, we provide prioritized and contextualized built-environment intervention strategies and policy recommendations for urban designers and transportation planners.
