Abstract:Objective: To examine the mediating effects of self-control between self-esteem and binge eating behavior among overweight and obese adolescents. Methods: 1175 primary and middle school students(207 overweight and obesity)completed the Self-esteem Scale, Binge Eating Scale and the Self-control Scale. Results: 1The rates of Binge eating in normal weight students, overweight students and obese students are 6.78%, 5.88% and 16.90% respectively. 2The differences in self-esteem and binge eating were significant(P 0.05). 3Self-esteem was negatively related to binge eating(r=-0.257, P<0.01), and positively related to self-control(r=0.402, P<0.01). Binge eating was negatively related to self-control(r=-0.473, P<0.01). 4Self-control played a mediating role on the relationship between self-esteem and binge eating(P<0.01). Conclusion: Self-control fully mediated the effect of self-esteem on binge eating among overweight and obese adolescents.
