Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for transmitting a phase-modulated (PM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal along an existing fiber infrastructure without degradation of the existing baseband signal. Optical phase encoding of both signals, namely a baseband 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keyed signal and a 5.25-GHz RoF carrying 1.25 Gb/s, enables the use of identical optical receiver structures. The experimental results show that both receivers achieve error-free operation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. The proposed scheme has potential applications for converged wireless and wireline optical access networks.

Abstract:With the progress of high-capacity radio access networks, ultra-dense small cells are rapidly being deployed in urban areas. As a result, the deployment of a large number of optical fibers in urban areas becomes a severe issue. In this Letter, we propose a hybrid fiber–terahertz (THz) mobile fronthaul system supporting flexible and high-order wireless signal transmission with the delta-sigma modulation. The photonic THz transmission is used as the seamless extension of fiber-based fronthaul in small cells. A 20-Gbit/s digital fiber–THz fronthaul system is experimentally demonstrated to validate the proposed scheme, with 10-km optical fiber transmission and 300-GHz wireless relay. Carrier aggregation of up to 10 40-MHz and 60-MHz 5G-new radio (5G-NR) channels at the radio carrier frequency of 3.9 GHz is reported. The design of quantization noise suppressed delta-sigma modulation enables the system to transmit orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation up to 16384 order quadrate amplitude modulation (QAM) mapping with the error vector magnitude (EVM) below 0.5%.
A Novel OFDM Transmission Scheme with Length-Adaptive Cyclic Prefix

Abstract:Conventional OFDM transmission system uses a fixed-length Cyclic Prefix to counteract Inter-Symbol Interferences (ISI) caused by channel delay spreading under wireless mobile environment. This may cause considerable performance deterioration when the CP length is less than the channel RMS delay spread, or may decrease the system power and spectrum efficiency when it is much larger. A novel Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme is proposed in this paper to adapt the CP length to the variation of channel delay spread. AOFDM-VCPL utilizes the preamble or pilot sub-carriers of each OFDM packet to estimate the channel RMS delay spread; and then uses a criterion to calculate the CP length, which finally affects the OFDM transmitter. As illustrated in the simulation section, by deploying this scheme in a typical wireless environment, the system can transmit at data rate 11.5 Mb/s higher than conventional non-adaptive system while gaining a 0.65 dB power saving at the same BER performance.

Abstract:Four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) has been considered as a low-cost modulation format for capacity upgrade in digital mobile fronthaul; however, the bit error ratio increases due to the reduced Euclidean distance. In this letter, a novel scheme is proposed to suppress bit-error-induced error vector magnitude (EVM) distortion upon radio signal in PAM4-based fronthaul. The scheme is realized by pairing one highorder bit and one low-order bit onto one PAM4 symbol and setting a portion of low-order bits to "0." As a result, sample bits with high priority are delivered by PAM2 symbols with small error probability, and sample bits with low priority are transmitted by PAM4 signal with high spectral efficiency. Without any modification of the hardware, the proportion between PAM2 and PAM4 can be flexibly adjusted according to the quality of optical link. Experiments validate that, under respective optimal PAM2/4 proportion, EVM of long term evolution-advanced like radio signal decreases by at least 20 dB, and up to 1024-quadratic-amplitude modulation can be supported.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplex/offset QAM (OFDM/OQAM) has been proven to be a promising multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique for the transmission of signals over multipath fading channels. However, OFDM/OQAM has also the intrinsic disadvantage of high peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) that should be alleviated. In this paper, a novel selective mapping (SLM) method is proposed for OFDM/OQAM system. Since the pulse shape may cover a few OFDM symbols, the basic principle of the proposed method is to apply the SLM method in the range of the most relevant OFDM symbols. Analysis and simulation results show that, compared to the existing SLM algorithms for OFDM/OQAM system, the proposed method has better PAPR performance and lower computation complexity.

Abstract:This paper explores the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) influence of the base band orthogonal-frequencydivision-multiplexing (OFDM) signal and the multiband orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing ultrawideband (MB-OFDM UWB) signal, and compares the performance of discrete fourier transform spread (DFTspread) scheme with clipping filter (CF) scheme to reducing PAPR in MB-OFDM UWB signal. On this basis, this paper also puts forward a scheme for restraining the influence of high PAPR and frequency selective fading (FSF) in 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) MB-OFDM UWBoF system, which is based on the combination of DFT-spread and pre-compensation. The results of simulation show that this scheme can improve the receiver sensitivity by 3.30 dB after the transmission of 70 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with the bit error rate (BER) of 1.0 x 10-3, which compared with the situation without DFT-spread and pre-compensation.

Abstract:Driven by continuously growing mobile traffic, line rate of digital mobile fronthaul (MFH) network keeps surging. 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) is a promising format to provide such high data capacity, due to its bandwidth and cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose an improved method to reduce mobile signal distortion caused by bit error of optical transmission. The concept comes from the characteristic that high order sample bit error induces far severer performance degradation to radio signal than low order one. In the solution, high order sample bits and low order sample bits are interleaved, so that they are respectively mapped to first bit (1stb) and second bit (2ndb) of PAM4 symbol. On the other hand, amplitude levels of PAM4 are set unequal to broaden the "middle eye", levering accuracy of 1stb. Hence, the total fidelity of mobile signal is enhanced. The feasibility is confirmed both theoretically and experimentally. The investigation is based on two typical digital systems, i.e., 16-bit uniform quantizing and 8-bit nonuniform quantizing. Experimental results indicate that, EVM of LTE-A like radio signal decreases by up to 13dB in uniform quantizing system, and by up to 5dB in nonuniform quantizing system, compared with conventional equally-spaced PAM4.

Abstract:Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA), which combines the single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) and frequency division multiple access (FDMA) techniques is a promising broadband wireless access scheme. However, previous research has shown that the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of SC-FDMA is high especially in the case of localized subcarrier mapping. In this paper, we simulate and analyze the PAPR for SC-FDMA with two subcarrier mapping schemes known as Localized FDMA (LFDMA) and Interleaved FDMA (IFDMA) respectively, and evaluate the PAPR performance of users assigned on different subcarriers in LFDMA. To reduce the PAPR, we propose an efficient clipping-based PAPR reduction algorithm. Simulation results show that with a small degradation in the system bit error rate (BER) performance the proposed scheme can achieve around 2dB PAPR reduction for LFDMA.

Abstract:A low-complexity mobile fronthaul architecture via digital code-division multiplexing (CDM) is proposed to enable channel aggregation of 4G-LTE signals. In comparison with traditional frequency division multiplexing based aggregation scheme, the fast Fourier transformation/inverse fast Fourier transformation operations are replaced by simple sign selection and addition, leading to the significant reduction of computational complexity. Moreover, synchronous transmission of both the I/Q waveforms of wireless signals and the control words (CWs) used for the purpose of control and management using the CDM approach is also presented to be compliant with the common public radio interface (CPRI). In a proof-of-concept experiment, we demonstrate the transmission of 48 × 20 MHz LTE signals with CPRI equivalent data rate of 59 Gb/s, achieving an average error vector magnitude (EVM) of ~3.6% and ~4.3% after 5 and 20 km transmission over standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), respectively. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrate the transmission of 32 × 20 MHz LTE signals together with CPRI-compliant CWs, corresponding to CPRI-equivalent data rate of 39.32 Gb/s, only using single optical wavelength channel with analog bandwidth of ~1.96 GHz. After transmission over 5 km SSMF, CWs can be error-free recovered while the LTE signals are recovered with an EVM of ~3.6%.

Abstract:In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate digital mobile fronthaul (MFH) for 65536 quadrature amplitude modulation (65536-QAM) signals based on a diff-delta-sigma modulation (D-DSM) scheme with orthogonal circulant matrix transform (OCT) precoding. By combining the DDSM scheme with OCT precoding, we successfully solved the problem of uneven distribution of in-band quantization noise (IBN) while bringing about a quantization SNR gain of about 1.5 dB. In addition, we compare two signal combination schemes, Gray coding and power superposition, in the D-DSM scheme. The results show that the power superposition scheme can achieve similar performance to Gray coding with lower computational complexity. At the same time, the power superposition scheme is less affected by the saturation effect. Therefore, the D-DSM solution combined with OCT precoding and power superposition provides an effective solution for future 6 G digital mobile fronthaul. (c) 2024 Optica Publishing Group. Abstract:Considering the drawbacks of the traditional companding transforms，an efficient companding scheme combined with iterative filtering was proposed to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals.By introducing a joint optimization approach for PAPR and bit error rate (BER) performances along with remaining an unchanged average output power level，the scheme could achieve significant reduction in PAPR as well as an improved BER simultaneously.Moreover，by adaptively adjusting the transform parameters in the iterative process，more design flexibility in companding form and lower out-of-band radiation could also be given to satisfy various system requirements.The proposed scheme had a simple functional form and less computational complexity.The theoretical results regarding the transform gain and impact of companding distortion were derived.Simulation results show that this scheme can substantially offer better overall performances in terms of PAPR reduction，BER performance and bandwidth efficiency.

Abstract:A differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) based digital mobile fronthaul architecture is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By using a linear predictor in the DPCM encoding process, the quantization noise can be effectively suppressed and a prediction gain of 7~8 dB can be obtained. Experimental validation is carried out with a 20 km 15-Gbaud/λ 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) intensity modulation and direct detection system. The results verify the feasibility of supporting 163, 122, 98, 81 20-MHz 4, 16, 64, 256 QAM based antenna-carrier (AxC) containers with only 3, 4, 5, 6 quantization bits at a sampling rate of 30.72MSa/s in LTE-A environment. Further increasing the number of quantization bits to 8 and 9, 1024 quadrature amplitude modulation (1024 QAM) and 4096 QAM transmission can be realized with error vector magnitude (EVM) lower than 1% and 0.5%, respectively. The supported number of AxCs in the proposed DPCM-based fronthaul is increased and the EVM is greatly reduced compared to the common public radio interface (CPRI) based fronthaul that uses pulse code modulation. Besides, the DPCM-based fronthaul is also experimentally demonstrated to support universal filtered multicarrier signal that is one candidate waveform for the 5th generation mobile systems.
