Abstract:By employing molecular dynamics simulations, we explored different size-dependent dynamics of NPs in semiflexible linear and ring polymer nanocomposites. Large NPs diffuse faster slightly in flexible ring polymer nanocomposites than in flexible linear polymer ones. However, the motions of large NPs in semiflexible ring polymer nanocomposites with large bending energies are very slow and NPs exhibit the glassy state in which the NPs are all caged by the neighbouring semiflexible ring polymers, while large NPs in semiflexible linear polymer nanocomposites transport much faster than those in semiflexible ring polymer ones because rod-like structures of semiflexible linear polymers can favour the motions of NPs. Meanwhile, the diffusion coefficients Dpolymer of semiflexible ring polymers decrease monotonously with increasing bending energy Kb, while the minimum diffusion coefficient for semiflexible linear polymers occurs at the moderate bending energy such as Kb = 6, in which the semiflexible linear polymers hold the maximum entanglement density. NP size, polymer topological constraint as well as chain stiffness affect the dynamics of NPs in polymer nanocomposites seriously, and this investigation can help us understand the complicated dynamical behaviours for NPs in polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:A strong and stable fluorescent signal is the crux for the ultrasensitive biodetection technology, conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) as new fluorescence labels have attracted more and more attention for their excellent optical properties. However, a systematic understanding of the size-dependent optical properties of CPNs with diameters from the nano to submicron ranges is lacking, which is the most important issue when choosing label materials. Hence, poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(1,4-benzo-{2,10,3}thiadiazole)] (PFBT) nanoparticles with sizes from 50 nm to 200 nm were synthesized and studied. It was demonstrated that the spectroscopic and fluorescent properties are similar for CPNs with different sizes. The relationship between single-particle brightness and diameter was investigated via fluorescence spectrometry and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), and the results presented that the singleparticle brightness increased quadratically with the increase of the diameter of CPNs. This research may provide valuable support to further application of CPNs in biological diagnostics.
Selective adsorption behavior of polymer at the polymer–nanoparticle interface

Abstract:Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the adsorption behavior of monodisperse and bidisperse polymer chains on the nanoparticle (NP) surface at various polymer-NP interactions, chain lengths, and stiffness. At a strong polymer-NP interaction, long chains preferentially occupy interfacial region and squeeze short chains out of the interfacial region. Semiflexible chains with proper stiffness wrap NPs dominantly in a helical fashion, whereas fully flexible chains constitute the surrounding matrix. As chain stiffness increases, the results of the preferential adsorption are the opposite. The chain-length or chain-stiffness-induced selective adsorption behavior of polymer chains in the polymer-NP interfacial region relies on a delicate competition between entropic and enthalpic contributions to the total free energy. These results could provide insights into polymer-NP interfacial adsorption behavior and guide the design of high-performance nanocomposites. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Nanomaterials filled polymers system is a simple method to produce organic/inorganic hybrid with synergistic or complementary effects. The properties of nanocomposites strongly depend on the dispersion effects of nanomaterials in the polymer and their interfaces. The optimized interface of nanocomposites would decrease the barrier height between filler and polymer for charge transfer. To avoid aggregation of metal nanoparticles and improve interfacial charge transfer, Pt nanodots filled in the non-conjugated polymer was synthesized with an in situ method. The results exhibited that the absorbance of nanocomposite covered from the visible light region to NIR (near infrared). The photo-current responses to typical visible light and 808 nm NIR were studied based on Au gap electrodes on a flexible substrate. The results showed that the size of Pt nanoparticles was about 1-2 nm and had uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix. The resulting nanocomposite exhibited photo-current switching behavior to weak visible light and NIR. Simultaneously, the nanocomposite also showed electrical switching responses to strain applied to a certain extent. Well-dispersion of Pt nanodots in the polymer is attributable to the in situ synthesis of metal nanodots, and photo-current switching behavior is due to interface optimization to decrease barrier height between metal filler and polymer. It provided a simple way to obtain organic/inorganic hybrid with external stimuli responses and multi-functionalities.
Anomalous Size Dependence of Optical Properties in Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots

Abstract:Understanding electron transitions in black phosphorus nanostructures plays a crucial role in applications in electronics and optoelectronics. In this work, by employing time-dependent density functional theory calculations, we systematically study the size-dependent electronic, optical absorption, and emission properties of black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs). Both the electronic gap and the absorption gap follow an inversely proportional law to the diameter of BPQDs in conformity to the quantum confinement effect. In contrast, the emission gap exhibits anomalous size dependence in the range of 0.8-1.8 nm, which is blue-shifted with the increase of size. The anomaly in fact arises from the structure distortion induced by the excited-state relaxation, and it leads to a huge Stokes shift in small BPQDs.

Abstract:A core-shell structure of novel complex conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) consisting of poly(2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)- 1,4-phenylenevinylene), polyethyleneimine (PEI) is developed. PEI is used to construct CPN@PEI core-shell structure through electrostatic attraction, and shell thickness can be controlled by PEI. Small Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles (ANPs) are then inserted into CPN@PEI core-shell structure to plasmonically tune luminescence properties. The coupling structure with double polymer core-shell CPN@PEI and ANPs presents unique luminescent characters, and maximum luminescence enhancement is realized when shell thickness is 8.6 nm. The strategies taking polymer as shell material in construction of core-shell complex CPNs and tuning optical properties by ANPs shall have significant values in applications of CPNs as probes and fluorescent tags in biological science. Abstract:The ground-and the excited-state nonlinearities of two new copolymers are investigated in nanosecond scale at 1064 nm. It is found that the excited-state susceptibility is dramatically larger than the corresponding groundstate susceptibility for each sample. The experimental results also give evidence that superlattice structure of the copolymers can enhance, especially for the excited state, the molecular hyperpolarizabilities significantly. This enhancement may be attributed to the confinement effect of the pump-induced carriers.

Abstract:A novel chiral conjugated polymer is developed and used for the preparation of conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) with particle sizes ranging from 80 to 190 nm. The size-dependent optical properties of chiral CPNs are fully studied and it was found that the nanoparticles exhibited a prominent red shift both in UV-vis and fluorescence emission with increasing diameters. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra and anisotropy r values of the CPNs display size-tunable chirality features, which can be attributed to the nature of the aggregates as nanoparticles grow. Meanwhile, the obtained CPNs can serve as efficient far-red/near-infrared (FR/NIR) fluorescent probes with low cytotoxicity and high photostability for HeLa cell imaging.

Abstract:In this paper, poly(o-phenylenediamine) quantum dots (PoQDs) with amorphous structures were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal treatment. The size of PoQDs can be easily controlled by changing the reaction time. All these quantum dots show excellent photoluminescent (PL) performance. The p-pi* transition between N and conjugated system in PoQDs increased the quantum yield significantly. Further experiments suggested the existence of quantum size effect in amorphous structures for the first time. The controllable PL performance were closely related to the significant quantum size effect. What's more, these PoQDs were low cost and have high anti-jamming performance, good stability and application perspective of fluorescent bio-imaging. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Near-infrared-II fluorescence imaging (NIR-II FI) has become a powerful imaging technique for disease diagnosis owing to its superiorities, including high sensitivity, high spatial resolution, deep imaging depth, and low background interference. Despite the widespread application of conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) for NIR-II FI, most of the developed CPNs have quite low NIR-II fluorescence quantum yields based on the energy gap law, which makes high-sensitivity and high-resolution imaging toward deep lesions still a huge challenge. This work proposes a nanoengineering strategy to modulate the size of CPNs aimed at optimizing their NIR-II fluorescence performance for improved NIR-II phototheranostics. By adjusting the initial concentration of the synthesized conjugated polymer, a series of CPNs with different particle sizes are successfully prepared via a nanoprecipitation approach. Results show that the NIR-II fluorescence brightness of CPNs gradually amplifies with decreasing particle size, and the optimal CPNs, NP0.2, demonstrate up to a 2.05-fold fluorescence enhancement compared with the counterpart nanoparticles. With the merits of reliable biocompatibility, high photostability, and efficient light-heat conversion, the optimal NP0.2 has been successfully employed for NIR-II FI-guided photothermal therapy both in vitro and in vivo. Our work highlights an effective strategy of nanoengineering to improve the NIR-II performance of CPNs, advancing the development of NIR-II FI in life sciences.

Abstract:Soluble conjugated polymeric nanoparticles are synthesized by Suzuki-type polycondensation of two monomers (Ax + By, x>2, y≥2) in the channel of ordered mesoporous silica-supported carbon nanomembranes (nanoreactors). These synthesized soluble conjugated microporous polymers (SCMPs) exhibit uniform particle-size distributions and well-controlled particle sizes. The control of particle size stems from the fact that the polycondensations exclusively take place inside the mesochannels of the nanoreactors. Photoluminescence studies show that polymeric nanoparticles with tetraphenylethene and pyrene substructures are highly fluorescent. The combination of both physical stability and processability offered by the soluble polymeric nanoparticles makes them particularly attractive in light emitting and other optoelectronic applications.
Selective photothermal and photodynamic capabilities of conjugated polymer nanoparticles

Abstract:We found out that the conjugated polymers with different molecular weights and fullerene addition selectively controlled the photothermal and photodynamic effects of conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs). It turned out that the use of high molecular weight (MW) conjugated polymer increase near infrared absorption, resulting in more photothermal effect than photodynamic effect. The highest photothermal effect was achieved when the more molecular ordering was expected by using a high MW conjugated polymer, phase-separated film dispersion process and a phospholipid-polyethylene glycol with alkyl tails for dense association with alkyl side chains of a conjugated polymer. On the other hand, the photodynamic effect was generally enhanced when less-organized molecular assemblies were expected by using a low molecular weight conjugated polymer, a nanoprecipitation process, and/or a surfactant without compact alkyl chain association with a conjugated polymer. It was notable that fullerene acted differently on the photophysical properties of CPNs, depending on the molecular ordering. With limited fluctuation in the photothermal effect, the fullerene addition into CPNs enhanced the photodynamic effect under situations that can disrupt molecular ordering. In the meantime, the fullerene in CPNs enhanced the photothermal effect while maintaining the photodynamic effect with higher molecular ordering. Our results show that the combination of fullerenes can selectively and significantly increase the phototherapeutic capabilities based on molecular ordering of CPNs, suggesting a strategic approach for efficiency enhancement in the phototherapeutic medicinal applications.

Abstract:This article reports a class of nanoscale materials, that is, optically active nanoparticles consisting of helical-substituted polyacetylenes. Such nanoparticles were prepared via aqueous catalytic miniemulsion polymerization, by which nanoparticles with a wide range of size (diameter: 60-400 nm) can be easily prepared. The nanoparticles could be obtained in quantitative monomer conversions. Large specific rotations and intense circular dichroism effects demonstrated that the nanoparticles possessed large optical activities; moreover, the optical activities were found to increase with a decrease in particle size. From the obtained polymer nanoparticles and with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as supporting material, composite films were further prepared and also exhibited considerable optical activities. Abstract:Soluble conjugated polymeric nanoparticles were synthesized through Sonogashira polycondensation between different combinations of multifunctional alkynes and aryl halides in structurally well-defined mesoporous reactors. The growth of the polymeric nanoparticles was controlled by the spatial confinement of the nanoreactors, giving conjugated polymeric nanoparticles with narrow size distribution centered at 5 nm. All the obtained polymers are freely soluble in common solvents and can be fabricated into thin film. Both of the solution and thin film prepared from these polymeric nanoparticles were highly fluorescent, endowing them potential applications in light emitting and other optoelectronic fields. Abstract:A size-controlled method has been exploited to synthesize 20 kinds of soluble-conjugated polymeric nanoparticles (SCPNs) through cross-coupling polymerizations between various combinations of symmetrical multifunctional monomers (A(x)+B-y, x > 2, y >= 2). Unlike the classical polycondensation of these kinds of monomers where infinite polymer networks and insoluble polymeric products are typically formed, this confined polymerization in palladium nanoparticles-loaded dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres produced SCPNs with good to high yields, narrow particle size distribution, and high solubility in common organic solvents. The controlled size of SCPNs characterized with gel permeation chromatography shows narrow distribution and various molecular weight ranging from 2164 to 14 234 Da, transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering analyses range from 5 to 15 nm, suggesting the confined polymerization occurring inside of the mesopores. By simply adjusting the monomer structure and selecting an appropriate cross-coupling polymerization method among Suzuki, Stille, Sonogashira, and direct arylation polymerizations, the obtained SCPNs show bright fluorescence emission varying from blue to red. The SCPNs with long alkyl chain substituents in monomer units show good processability and smooth polymer films are formed by the simple spin-casting method. The repeatable and straightforward synthesis of SCPNs endows them with wide application prospects in light-emission, fluorescence sensing, and bioimaging.
Tunable variation of optical properties of polymer capped gold nanoparticles

Abstract:Optical properties of polymer capped gold nanoparticles of various sizes (diameter 3-6 nm) have been studied. We present a new scheme to extract size dependent variation of total dielectric function of gold nanoparticles from measured UV-Vis absorption data. The new scheme can also be used, in principle, for other related systems as well. We show how quantum effect, surface atomic co - ordination and polymer - nanoparticle interface morphology leads to a systematic variation in inter band part of the dielectric function of gold nanoparticles, obtained from the analysis using our new scheme. Careful analysis enables identification of the possible changes to the electronic band structure in such nanoparticles.

Optimizing the Polymer Cloak for Upconverting Nanoparticles: An Evaluation of Bioactivity and Optical Performance

Abstract:The ability of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) to convert low-energy near-infrared (NIR) light into high-energy visible-ultraviolet light has resulted in their development as novel contrast agents for biomedical imaging. However, UCNPs often succumb to poor colloidal stability in aqueous media, which can be conquered by decorating the nanoparticle surface with polymers. The polymer cloak, therefore, plays an instrumental role in ensuring good stability in biological media. This study aims to understand the relationship between the length and grafting density of the polymer shell on the physicochemical and biological properties of these core–shell UCNPs. Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate block ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate (PPEGMEMAn-b-PEGMP3) with different numbers of PEGMEMA repeating units (26, 38, and 80) was prepared and attached to the UCNPs via the phosphate ligand of the poly(ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate) (PEGMP) block at different polymer densities. The in vitro and in vivo protein corona, cellular uptake in two-dimensional (2D) monolayer and three-dimensional (3D) multicellular tumor spheroid (MCTS) models, and in vivo biodistribution in mice were evaluated. Furthermore, the photoluminescence of single-polymer-coated UCNPs was compared in solid state and cancer cells using laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). Our results showed that the bioactivity and luminescence properties are chain length and grafting density dependent. The UCNPs coated with the longest PPEGMEMA chain, grafted at low brush density, were able to reduce the formation of the protein corona in vitro and in vivo, while these UCNPs also showed the brightest upconversion luminescence in the solid state. Optical Label-Free Microscopy Characterization of Dielectric Nanoparticles

Abstract:In order to relate nanoparticle properties to function, fast and detailed particle characterization, is needed. The ability to characterize nanoparticle samples using optical microscopy techniques has drastically improved over the past few decades; consequently, there are now numerous microscopy methods available for detailed characterization of particles with nanometric size. However, there is currently no ``one size fits all'' solution to the problem of nanoparticle characterization. Instead, since the available techniques have different detection limits and deliver related but different quantitative information, the measurement and analysis approaches need to be selected and adapted for the sample at hand. In this tutorial, we review the optical theory of single particle scattering and how it relates to the differences and similarities in the quantitative particle information obtained from commonly used microscopy techniques, with an emphasis on nanometric (submicron) sized dielectric particles. Particular emphasis is placed on how the optical signal relates to mass, size, structure, and material properties of the detected particles and to its combination with diffusivity-based particle sizing. We also discuss emerging opportunities in the wake of new technology development, with the ambition to guide the choice of measurement strategy based on various challenges related to different types of nanoparticle samples and associated analytical demands.

Synthesis And Optical Properties Of Polymer Functionalized Inorganic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Nanoparticles possess many special characteristics that can be used in many fields such as optics, electricity, magnetism and catalysis. However, it is difficult to obtain a uniform dispersion system of nanoparticles owing to their strong tendency of agglomeration for their high surface energy, so surface modification is urgently needed. Using polymer to modify the surface performance of nanoparticles is an interesting method. One major topical areas on preparing polymer nanoparticles are summarized in this chapter. Poly (methyl methacrylate) functionalized nanoparticles (anatase, gamma-Al2O3, SiO2, and ZnO) are prepared using gamma and electron radiation. A blue luminescence peak (at similar to 430 nm) can be observed for the nanocomposite. Annealing in air atmosphere destroys the carboxylate bonds and induces the decrease of luminescence density.

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) are important materials that are widely used in many current technologies and potentially have broader applications in the future due to their excellent property tunability, light weight, and low cost. However, expanding the limits in property enhancement remains a fundamental scientific challenge. Here, we demonstrate that well-dispersed, small (diameter ∼1.8 nm) nanoparticles with attractive interactions lead to unexpectedly large and qualitatively different changes in PNC structural dynamics in comparison to conventional nanocomposites based on particles of diameters ∼10-50 nm. At the same time, the zero-shear viscosity at high temperatures remains comparable to that of the neat polymer, thereby retaining good processability and resolving a major challenge in PNC applications. Our results suggest that the nanoparticle mobility and relatively short lifetimes of nanoparticle-polymer associations open qualitatively different horizons in the tunability of macroscopic properties in nanocomposites with a high potential for the development of advanced functional materials.
