Abstract:Colloidal delivery systems have been widely used as carriers for controlled delivery of pesticides to improve the efficacy and photostability of natural and semi-synthetic pesticides. In this study, we have synthesized emamectin benzoate nanoformulations (EB + NFs) depending on polymeric nanocapsules (PNC) and two types of the nanosilica, mesoporous nanosilica (MCM-48) and silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SNPs) as carriers for the emamectin benzoate (EB). The fabricated nanoformulations were characterized by using X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, particle size, zeta potential, morphology, absolute recovery (AR), entrapment efficiency (EE), UV stability and release kinetics. The obtained results showed that the carriers had a remarkable loading ability for EB and improved the EB photostability. The EE% of nanoformulations were 92.84%, 87.45% and 71.19% for emamectin benzoate polymeric nanocapsules (EB + PNC), emamectin benzoate SNPs (EB + SNPs) and emamectin benzoate MCM-48 (EB + MCM-48) respectively. The insecticidal activity of EB + NFs against Plutella xylostella showed that the EB + SNPs was more effective than other EB + NFs and EB alone. The LC50 values were 0.18, 4.03, 8.49 and 11.06 mg L-1 for EB + SNPs, EB + MCM-48, EB + PNC and EB respectively. The obtained results suggest the colloidal delivery systems that used in this study could improve the efficacy and photostability for EB, and they are able to overcome the disadvantage of the natural and semi-synthetic pesticides such as environmental sensitivity and to increase the efficacy of pesticides, which eventually leads to reduce the dosage of pesticides needed, reducing the number of applications required in comparison to conventional formulations.

Abstract:Using nanotechnology to develop new formulations of pesticides is considered a possible option in enhancing the efficiency, safety, and photostability of pesticides under various climatic conditions. In the present study, two novel nanoformulations (NFs) were successfully prepared based on nano-delivery systems for emamectin benzoate (EMB) by loading it on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SNPs) as carriers through a freeze-drying method. The synthesized nanoformulations were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results showed that SNPs and CNCs had a loading efficiency of 43.31% and 15.04% (w/w) for EMB, respectively, and could effectively protect EMB from photolysis under UV radiation. The LC50 values for EMB + SNPs, EMB + CNCs, and EMB commercial formulation against Phenacoccus solenopsis were 0.01, 0.05, and 0.31 μg/mL, respectively, indicating that both NFs were more effective than the EMB commercial formulation. This work seeks to develop new nano-carriers for potential applications of pesticides in plant protection, which will reduce the recommended dose of pesticides and thereby decrease the amount of pesticide residue in food and the environment.

Abstract:Inefficient usage and overdosage of conventional pesticide formulations has resulted in large economic losses and environmental pollution due to their poor water solubility and weak adhesion to foliage. In order to develop a green and efficient pesticide formulation, a kind of alkyd resin (AR) based on vegetable oil was first synthesized and used to fabricate the lambda-cyhalothrin/AR (LC/AR) nanoemulsion via in situ phase inverse emulsification, and its properties were then investigated. Results showed that the particle size of the LC/AR nanoemulsion was 50-150 nm with maximum LC loading capacity of as much as 40.9 wt %, high encapsulation efficiency >90%, and great stability in multiple environments. The LC/AR nanoemulsion exhibited better controlled release characteristics compared with LC commercial formulations, and a stronger adhesion on the foliage of the resulted nanoemulsion was also observed, which was attributed to low surface tension and strong interactions with foliar surfaces.

Abstract:Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-co-polylactide (PHEMA-co-PLA) and its corresponding cyhalothrin-loaded ultrafine particles were successfully synthesized and prepared, respectively. The chemical structures of the copolymers have been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Furthermore, the particle size, the cyhalothrin loading content (LC), and the cyhalothrin release behavior were investigated. PHEMA-co-PLA proved to be a good material for the preparation of ultrafine particles for lipophilic pesticide delivery. The developed cyhalothrin-loaded PHEMA-co-PLA ultrafine particles showed good dispersity in water and sustained release behavior. Abstract:The utilization of interfacial polymerization in the preparation of microcapsules with a slow-controlled release has been shown to effectively improve pesticide efficacy and reduce environmental pollution. In this study, polyurea microcapsules loaded with lambda-cyhalothrin were prepared by an interfacial polymerization method using modified isocyanate (MDI) as the wall material and GT-34 as the initiator. The microcapsules were fully characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, etc., and release behaviors were investigated. The results indicated that the microcapsules had a smooth surface and uniform distribution, the average particle size of the microcapsules was 1.97 μm, and the encapsulation efficiency of lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules could reach 91.48%. Compared with other commercial formulations, the microcapsules exhibited an excellent sustained release property (>7 days) in a 50% acetonitrile aqueous solution (v/v). Subsequently, in vitro release studies showed that the lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules could consistently control the release of the core materials at different pH, temperature, and MDI addition amount conditions. The release of lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules was in accordance with the first-order model release, which was mainly by the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Furthermore, the biological activity on Myzus persicae showed that the microcapsules' persistence period was above 21 days, which was longer than that for the emulsifiable concentrate formulation.

Abstract:Avermectin (AVM) is a low-toxic and high-active biopesticide, but it can be easily degraded by UV light. In this paper, biodegradable castor oil-based polyurethanes (CO-PU) are synthesized and used as carriers to fabricate a new kind of AVM/CO-PU nanoemulsion through an emulsion solvent evaporation method, and the chemical structure, colloidal property, AVM loading capacity, controlled-release behavior, foliar adhesion, and photostability of the AVM/CO-PU drug delivery systems are investigated. Results show that AVM is physically encapsulated in the CO-PU carrier nanospheres, the diameter of the AVM/CO-PU nanoparticles is <50 nm, and the AVM/CO-PU films are flat and smooth without any AVM aggregate. The drug loading capacity is up to 42.3 wt % with a high encapsulation efficiency of >85%. The release profiles indicate that the release rate is relatively high at the early stage and then slows, which can be adjusted by loaded AVM content, temperature, and pH of the release medium. The foliar pesticide retention of the AVM/CO-PU nanoemulsions is improved, and the photolysis rate of AVM in the AVM/CO-PU nanoparticles is significantly slower than that of the free AVM. A release mechanism of the AVM/CO-PU nanoemulsions is proposed, which is controlled by both diffusion and matrix erosion.

Abstract:The nanosuspension of 5% lambda-cyhalothrin with 0.2% surfactants was prepared by the melt emulsification-high pressure homogenization method. The surfactants composition, content, and homogenization process were optimized. The anionic surfactant (1-dodecanesulfonic acid sodium salt) and polymeric surfactant (maleic rosin-polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate) screened from 12 types of commercially common-used surfactants were used to prepare lambda-cyhalothrin nanosuspension with high dispersity and stability. The mean particle size and polydispersity index of the nanosuspension were 16.01 ± 0.11 nm and 0.266 ± 0.002, respectively. The high zeta potential value of −41.7 ± 1.3 mV and stable crystalline state of the nanoparticles indicated the excellent physical and chemical stability. The method could be widely used for preparing nanosuspension of various pesticides with melting points below boiling point of water. This formulation may avoid the use of organic solvents and reduce surfactants and is perspective for improving bioavailability and reducing residual pollution of pesticide in agricultural products and environment.

Abstract:Environmental concerns and low efficacy pose a challenge for the application of traditional insecticide formulations. In this study, a series of λ-cyhalothrin (LC)-loaded nanoparticles (NPs) were produced by flash nanoprecipitation (FNP), and the parameters that influence nanoparticle size were systematically studied. The narrowly distributed and size-controllable NPs formed stable suspensions in aqueous solution without organic solvents. The amphiphilic block polymer PEG-PDLLA played an important role as a drug carrier, and the encapsulation content was as high as 99%. The obtained NPs with high loading of LC exhibited toxicity comparable to those of two commercial formulations at low doses. This confirms that FNP technology is a promising and scalable method for agrochemical delivery.

Abstract:It is highly desirable to construct stimuli-responsive nanocarriers for improving pesticides targeting and preventing the pesticides premature release. In this study, five new amphiphilic polymer emulsifiers with stimuli-responsive properties were designed and prepared via esterifying ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer (EMA) with straight chain alkyl alcohols (including n-octanol, n-decanol, n-dodecanol, n-tetradecanol, and n-hexadecanol), followed by ionizing the esterification products. The alkyl ester side groups in the polymer structure gave the emulsifiers multiple characteristics, including adjustable amphiphilicity, affinity to pesticide, ability to form micelle in water, cleavable dynamic covalent ester linkages, and the possibility of temperature-induced phase transition. With these emulsifiers, especially for the one with dodecyl ester side groups (defined as HEMA-C 12 ), lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) was fabricated into the nanoemulsion with nanosized particles (71.1 nm) via the phase inversion emulsification process. HEMA-C 12 could also emulsify other hydrophobic pesticides, including avermectin, cyhalothrin, and bifenthrin , into nanoemulsions. The obtained LC nanoemulsion exhibited a series of advantages, including exceptional encapsulation efficiency (86.06%), high drug loading (52.10%), high stability towards shearing, storage and dilution, and high wettability, retention and adhesion to different leaves. In particular, the releasing of LC from the nanoparticles could be triggered by multidimensional stimuli, including pH, temperature, and esterase. The changes in structure and the stabilizing effect of HEMA-C 12 under various stimuli were investigated to understand the releasing mechanism. Finally, the releasing profiles were fitted with different kinetic models to provide insights into the releasing behaviors. The releasing curves in the presence and absence of esterase conformed to the Logistic model, except for that at the benchmark condition (pH 7.0 and 25 oC), which was controlled by the Korsmeyer-Peppas model and followed Fickian diffusion. Inspired by the rational-designed emulsifiers, a wide variety of novel polymer emulsifiers are expected to be developed for the construction of promising nanopesticide systems.

Abstract:An environmental friendly novel formulation of lambda-cyhalothrin EW was prepared by the phase transfer method using polymer emulsifier, and its physical and chemical performances were evaluated.The optimum formulation of lambda-cyhalothrin 5% EW was consisted of lambda-cyhalothrin 5%, cyclohexanone 4%, xylene 4%, glycerol 3%,polymer emulsifier N-300 2.5%, G-200 2.5%, and water making up to 100%. The results indicated that the formulation was stable in room temperature, low temperature and thermal storage, and the physical and chemical performances met the technical standards of EW.Oil droplet particle size was measured by laser particle analyzer, the results showed that the physical stability of EW was particularly associated with particle size and distribution.

Abstract:A series of lambda‐cyhalothrin (LC)‐loaded nanogels simultaneously featuring easy preparation, low‐cost, size‐controllable, and excellent stability are fabricated through one‐step microemulsion polymerization. These nanogels endow LC with the bidirectional translocation ability in plants, potentially creating a threshold for the nanocarrier to exhibit unique and rapid transport, which correspondingly improves the control efficiency and security compared with commercial microemulsion. Nanopesticides have been acknowledged by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry as a critical tool for revolutionizing future agricultural practices. However, the existing nanopesticides are often plagued by high costs, strict preparation conditions, uncontrollable size, and poor stability. Herein, taking the non‐systemic insecticide lambda‐cyhalothrin (LC) as a model pesticide, a series of LC‐loaded poly(octyl acrylate) nanogel formulations (LONFs) simultaneously featuring easy‐preparation, size‐controllable, and targeted delivery using microemulsion polymerization are developed. By adjusting the ratio of surfactants, the size of LONFs can be accurately designed to be 20, 50, 100, and 200 nm, exhibiting good stability under unconventional storage conditions (0 °C, 54 °C, ultraviolet radiation). Furthermore, reducing the particle diameter enhances the bidirectional translocation of LONFs in Vicia faba L., potentially reaching an optimal diameter (≈20 nm) for unique and rapid transport. LONFs increase the acute toxicity of LC to Aphis craccivora compared to conventional microemulsions (with a maximum reduction of 82.40% in LC50 at 24 h). Additionally, LONFs alter the lethal process of LC in human embryonic kidney 293T cells, with minimal cytotoxicity at a concentration of general application (40 mg L−1). This strategy simultaneously considers convenience, size controllability, and efficiency, providing a feasible method for the industrial development of nanopesticides.

Abstract:Lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) is a highly efficient broad-spectrum pesticide in agricultural production, yet its application is limited by weak solubility and poor adhesion to foliage. To develop effective utilization and enhance pesticide adhesion to targets, LC was loaded into a water-based vesicle system formed by aerosol OT (AOT) with a double hydrocarbon chain. The LC-loaded AOT vesicles (LC-AOT) had a high encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 97%. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements showed that LC-AOT vesicles had uniform morphology with a particle size of around 200 nm. The zeta potential and polydispersity index (PDI) values of LC-AOT vesicles were -70.3 mV and 0.20, respectively. Compared with commercial LC formulations, LC-AOT vesicles exhibited better wettability and retention on cabbage leaves. In addition, an insecticidal activity study demonstrated that LC-AOT vesicles exhibited prominent toxicity against Aphis craccivora. This research provided a valuable approach for solving problems of low utilization and little deposition on foliage for water-insoluble LC pesticides.

Abstract:In this study, pH-responsive O -CMCS/PU nanoparticles were prepared by encapsulating λ-cyhalothrin (LC) with O -carboxymethyl chitosan ( O -CMCS) to form LC/ O -CMCS and then covering it with polyurethane (PU). Characterization and performance test results demonstrate that O -CMCS/PU had good alkaline release properties and pesticide loading performance. Compared to commercial formulations containing large amounts of emulsifiers (e.g., emulsifiable concentrate, EC), O -CMCS/PU showed better leaf-surface adhesion. On the dried pesticide-applied surfaces, the acute contact toxicity of O -CMCS/PU to Harmonia axyridis ( H. axyridis ) was nearly 20 times lower than that of LC EC. Due to the slow-releasing property of O -CMCS/PU, only 16.38 % of LC was released at 48 h in dew and effectively reduced the toxicity of dew. On the pesticide-applied leaves with dew, exposure to the LC (EC) caused 86.66 % mortality of H. axyridis larvae significantly higher than the O -CMCS/PU, which was only 16.66 % lethality. Additionally, quantitative analysis demonstrated 11.33 mg/kg of λ-cyhalothrin in the dew on O -CMCS/PU lower than LC (EC) with 4.54 mg/kg. In summary, O -CMCS/PU effectively improves the safety of λ-cyhalothrin to H. axyridis and has great potential to be used in pest control combining natural enemies and chemical pesticides.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, stimuli-responsive controlled-release pesticide formulations have drawn extensive as they show huge potential in the practical application of agriculture. Herein, a multifunctional composite nanocarrier was prepared by our group, Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) modified graphene oxide (PNIPAm-GO), this is a temperature-responsive release pesticide formulation that can regulate pesticide release based on the temperature change. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) was loaded on PNIPAm-GO nanocomposite carrier via a simple physisorption process and exhibited temperature-responsive controlled release performance leading to release of LC at a specified temperature and extended its persisted release time. In addition, the controlled-release pesticide formulations showed both good water solubility and dispersion stability while its anti-UV property. Furthermore, we also assessed the biological safety of and proved that PNIPAm-GO is non-toxic. The study of this temperature-responsive pesticide formulation has promoted the development of intelligent pesticide formulations to great extent.</p>

Abstract:The deposition of pesticides and their retention on plant surfaces are critical challenges for modern precision agriculture, which directly affect phytosanitary treatment, bioavailability, efficacy, and the loss of pesticides. Herein, a novel and eco-friendly waterborne polyurethane delivery system was developed to enhance the spray deposition and pesticide retention on plant surfaces. More specifically, biobased cationic and anionic waterborne polyurethane dispersions were synthesized from castor oil. Both cationic and anionic polyurethane dispersions exhibited remarkable microstructural, amphiphilic, and nanoparticle morphologies with a core–shell structure that served to encapsulate a biopesticide (azadirachtin) in their hydrophobic cores (WPU-ACT). The results indicated that the cationic WPU-ACT carriers exhibited a better sustained release behavior and a better protective effect from light and heat for azadirachtin. In addition, the simultaneous spray of anionic and cationic WPU-ACT significantly enhanced the spray deposition and prolonged the retention of pesticides due to the reduced surface tension and surface precipitation induced by the electrostatic interaction when two droplets with opposite charges come into contact with each other. A field efficacy assessment also indicated that the simultaneous spray of anionic and cationic WPU-ACT could control the infestation of brown planthopper in rice crops. Abstract:Microcapsulses can be designed to effectively encapsulate, protect, and control the release of pesticides. In this study, emulsion-solvent evaporation method was used to fabricate microcapsules using dichloromethane as the solvent, polylactic acid (PLA) as the carrier materials, poly(vinyl alcohol) as the emulsifier, and β-cypermethrin as the entrapped pesticide. The effects of process parameters on the microcapsules characteristics (size, loading content, and encapsulation efficiency) were investigated. Also, the release behavior of the β-cypermethrin was measured experimentally and modeled mathematically. Kinetic analysis indicated that release mechanism of β-cypermethrin was compatible to Fickian diffusion. By optimizing the process parameters, β-cypermethrin-loaded microcapsules were successfully produced with spherical shape, smooth surface, high encapsulation efficiency (> 80%), and a range of pesticide contents. These parameters could be adjusted to achieve delivery systems with desirable release profiles. The results are beneficial to develop delivery systems for rational and effective usage of pesticides.

Abstract:Controlled release system has been widely developed and used in agriculture to improve efficacy and minimize environmental pollution. Here, the pesticide-loaded carboxymethyl chitosan microspheres were constructed by suspension-crosslinking method. Carboxymethyl chitosan was used as a carrier to formulate microsphere to load neonicotinoids with a mixture of calcium chloride and glutaraldehyde as double-component cross-linking agent. The resulting microsphere processed high drug loading and encapsulation efficiency with a mean diameter of 1 mm. The UV detection method of pesticide was established, which was convenient and quick. The pesticides release properties of the microspheres were investigated, and the controlled release time was more than 6 days, which achieves the objective of improving the efficacy of the pesticides. This work would promote the development of controlled-release pesticide systems.
