Abstract:Multilayer nanocomposite films composed of negative charged Ag nanosized particles and cationic polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) molecules were fabricated on polymer modified single-crystal silicon and flat glass slides by a layer-by-layer (LBL) molecular self-assembly technique. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the formed Ag particles successfully absorbed onto the positively charged surfaces. The atomic force microscopy image of a two-cycle Ag/PAH bilayer film showed that no surface damage or defects existed on the thin-films surface. The Ag particles were densely and homogeneously distributed on the surface and relatively uniform in size. Goniometry was employed to verify the assembly process and the water contact angles oscillated regularly, depending on the composition of the outermost layer. By using the LBL deposition technique, a molecular-level ordered multilayer film with the thickness up to 40 layers (20 bilayers) was obtained. Results from UV–vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements revealed that the self-assembly of the Ag/PAH multilayer film was well quantitative and reproducible. Thus we can conclude that the consecutive LBL deposition technique is a feasible and effective way to produce multilayer film and control the surface properties.
Mechanical Properties of Diamond‐Structured Polymer Microlattices Coated with the Silicon Nitride Film

Abstract:Inspired by crystal structures of the diamond and polymer/ceramic core‐shell structures of hard biological materials, diamond‐structured polymer/SiN microlattices with enhanced mechanical properties have been fabricated by 3D printing and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. It is found that the compressive strength of the resultant microlattices improves with increasing silicon nitride film thickness and can reach 1.95 MPa at the thickness of 400 nm, which is 3.4 times higher than the pure polymer, but a little increase of 4.8% in density, which is only 169.2 kg m−3. The work may provide a simplified and feasible avenue to improve the strength of low density materials.

Herein, we report incorporation of chloromethyl moieties into a living diatom to prepare an alkyl-halide activated siliceous biotemplate. Abstract:A novel method using a combination of microcontact printing(muCP) technique, surface-directed condensation and surface-directed dewetting has been developed to fabricate patterned polymer films on gold substrates. These patterned polymer films can serve as resists in the argon ion etching effectively to transfer patterns into. the underlying gold substrates. This method is flexible in controlling the shape and feature size of the patterns in the polymer resists by simply adjusting the concentration of polymer solution, and especially it also provides a route to sub-micrometer sized features by using an original template with micrometer sized features.

Abstract:Biosilicification in diatoms is achieved by specific interactions between silaffins, composed of polypeptides and long-chain polyamines, and silicic acid derivatives. The polycondensation of silicic acids is reported to be catalyzed by the long-chain polyamines that mainly contain tertiary N-methylpropyleneimine moieties. In this report, we utilized a tertiary amine-containing polymer, poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (poly(DMAEMA)), as a surface-grafted, biomimetic counterpart of the long-chain polyamines in silaffins and demonstrated that the surface-initiated polycondensation of silicic acids, leading to the formation of silica thin films, proceeded smoothly on surfaces presenting poly(DMAEMA), where poly(DMAEMA) was grown from gold surfaces by surface-initiated, atom transfer radical polymerization. The formed silica film was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of colloidal polymers with various T-g, composition, and sphere size were synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization and dispersion polymerization methods and then blended with colloidal silica particles to obtain polymer/silica nanocomposite latexes. When these nanocomposite latexes were forced dry at high temperature (e.g., 110 degrees C) for 2 h, a three-dimensional ordered porous structure was directly obtained. Neither complex processes nor removal of any templates like in a templating method is needed. These ordered pores should form from the top surface and then propagate layer by layer from the top surface to substrate.

Abstract:This paper reports a novel single-step wafer-level fabrication of superhydrophobic micro/nano dual-scale (MNDS) poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) films. The MNDS PDMS films were replicated directly from an ultralow-surface-energy silicon substrate at high temperature without any surfactant coating, achieving high precision. An improved deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process with enhanced passivation steps was proposed to easily realize the ultralow-surface-energy MNDS silicon substrate and also utilized as a post-treatment process to strengthen the hydrophobicity of the MNDS PDMS film. The chemical modification of this enhanced passivation step to the surface energy has been studied by density functional theory, which is also the first investigation of C4F8 plasma treatment at molecular level by using first-principle calculations. From the results of a systematic study on the effect of key process parameters (i.e., baking temperature and time) on PDMS replication, insight into the interaction of hierarchical multiscale structures of polymeric materials during the micro/nano integrated fabrication process is experimentally obtained for the first time. Finite element simulation has been employed to illustrate this new phenomenon. Additionally, hierarchical PDMS pyramid arrays and V-shaped grooves have been developed and are intended for applications as functional structures for a light-absorption coating layer and directional transport of liquid droplets, respectively. This stable, self-cleaning PDMS film with functional micro/nano hierarchical structures, which is fabricated through a wafer-level single-step fabrication process using a reusable silicon mold, shows attractive potential for future applications in micro/nanodevices, especially in micro/nanofluidics.

Abstract:Forming freestanding 2D crystals with intrinsically disordered polymer materials is an important and challenging goal in various fields. Here, we show a convenient method to prepare freestanding polymer crystalline layers with a single polymer in one step. We find that the cyclo-polymethacrylate with bis-dimethylsiloxane side groups (pbMA) forms a layer structure spontaneously on a water surface and the bis-dimethylsiloxane side groups form a 2D hexagonal crystal (a = b = 5.4 angstrom, gamma = 120 degrees) in the layers. Because of the significance of silicon materials in microelectronics, we anticipate that the method has potential applications in fields such as microelectronics and high-performance sensors.

Abstract:Novel organic/inorganic hybrid for coating material is prepared by the pentablock copolymer PDMS-b-(PMMA-b-PMPS)2 (PMMDMM) and SiO2 nanoparticles. PMMDMM is obtained via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) by using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as bifunctional macroinitiator. Poly 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (PMPS) is designed as the end block for facilitating the chemical bond of triethoxysilane (Si(OCH3)3) groups with SiO2 nanoparticles produced by tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is designed as the middle block for improving the solubility and the film-forming ability of copolymer. The homogeneous dispersion of SiO2 nanoparticles in the pentablock copolymer matrix enables PMMDMM/SiO2 to self-assemble into 210 nm SiO2 core/PMMDMM shell elliptic or spherical micelles in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. This self-assembled aggregate could provide the film surface with uniform distribution of SiO2 nanoparticles, obvious hydrophobicity (101-102° water contact angles), lower surface free energy (22.3-21.8 nN/m) and lower viscoelasticity. SiO2 involved into the copolymer matrix could increase the nanostructures roughness. When TEOS is controlled as 20 wt.%, the hybrid performs higher glass transition temperature (Tg = 113 °C) and excellent thermostability (520 °C) than PMMDMM (Tg = 87 °C, 295 °C) due to the introduction of SiO2 nanoparticles. These excellent properties promise PMMDMM/SiO2 hybrid as the candidate for coating material.

Abstract:The formation of microarrays on the surface of flexible materials has great potential value in fabrication of functional devices such as various kinds of flexible electronic sensors. To fabricate microarrays on the surface of flexible materials, many methods have been proposed, such as nanoimprint lithography technique, single-pulse laser interference and colloidal self-assembly. In our study, we present a simple method to fabricate silica microsphere arrays embedded on the surface of polyurethane film in a single-step. We directly solidified self assembled microspheres at the air-liquid interface, and obtained polyurethane film embedded with silica microarrays on its surface. Compared with other methods, precise operation and complicated equipment are not required. In addition, we also utilized the fabricated microarrays as a template to fabricate concave microarrays on the surface of other flexible materials.

Abstract:Polymer coating on the surface of inorganic ceramic nanoparticles is beneficial to decrease agglomeration and improve dispersion in organic solvent in ceramic injection moulding technology. A layer of thin polymer film on zirconia nanoparticles is deposited by inductively coupled ethylene/nitrogen plasma. Transmission electron microscopy photographs indicate the presence of uniform polymer coatings and the thickness of the polymer layer is estimated as several nanometers. The chemical structure of the film is revealed as quasi-polyethylene long hydrocarbon chain by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy examination. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The long-range ordering and directed self-assembly of thin films of a high interaction parameter rod–coil liquid crystalline block copolymer (LC BCP), poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)-oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PDMS-b-PMPCS, or DM), is described. The LC BCP was spin-coated on a polystyrene brush functionalized substrate and then thermally annealed at different temperatures with respect to the LC ordering temperature. The effects of the wetting behavior, commensurability between the film thickness and the periodicity, and the LC orientation on the ordering and orientation of the microdomains are described. A monolayer of in-plane cylinders with excellent long-range ordering was produced, and was transferred into SiO x patterns with tunable sub-10 nm feature sizes. Well-ordered multilayer in-plane cylinders were produced in thicker films, and the correlation between microstructure evolution and the LC ordering process was studied by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). Finally, the cylindrical rod–coil BCP was directed into a novel ladder morphology within lithographically patterned substrate trenches, as well as into patterns of parallel or transverse cylinders. The ordering of cylinders, the ladder morphology, and the etch selectivity and thermal stability of this high-interaction parameter silicon-containing LC rod–coil BCP demonstrate its applicability to nanoscale lithography.

Abstract:Diamond-like carbon(DLC)films were deposited on(100)silicon substrates at atmospheric pressure and low temperature(60 ℃～70 ℃)with a direct current pulsed power supply using a methanol solution.The morphology and microstructure of the films were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),transmission electron diffraction(TED)and Raman spectroscopy.The SEM observations showed that the films consisted of fine and compact ball-like grains with about 200 nm～400 nm in diameter.Raman spectroscopy analysis confirmed the diamond structure by the presence of strong peaks around 1 332 cm-1.The analyzed results of electron diffraction pattern confirmed the diamond 8H and graphite 2H structure in the films.

Abstract:Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were deposited on an Si plate from N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with pulse-modulated power. The deposition process can be facilitated by the promotion of the temperature or the decrease of the electrode separation distance. The films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The results showed that the films were hydrogenated DLC films. Hydrogen was removed and the primary bonding in the films changed gradually from sp(3)-bonded carbon to sp(2)-bonded carbon as annealing proceeded. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Scalable Nanostructuring on Polymer by a SiC Stamp: Optical and Wetting Effects

Abstract:A method for fabricating scalable antireflective nanostructures on polymer surfaces (polycarbonate) is demonstrated. The transition from small scale fabrication of nanostructures to a scalable replication technique can be quite challenging. In this work, an area per print corresponding to a 2-inch-wafer, is presented. The initial nanopatterning is performed on SiC in a 2-step process. Depending on the nanostructures the transmission of the SiC surface can be increased or suppressed (average height of nanostructures ~300nm and ~600nm, respectively) while the reflectance is decreased, when compared to a bare surface. The reflectance of SiC can be reduced down to 0.5% when the ~600nm nanostructures are applied on the surface (bare surface reflectance 25%). The texture of the green SiC color is changed when the different nanostructures are apparent. The ~600nm SiC nanostructures are replicated on polymer through a process flow that involved hot embossing and galvanization. The resulted polymer structures have similar average height and exhibit more rounded edges than the initial SiC nanostructures. The polymer surface becomes antireflective and hydrophobic after nanostructuring. The contact angle changes from 68 (bare) to 123 (nanostructured) degrees. The optical effect on the polymer surface can be maximized by applying a thin aluminum (Al) layer coating on the nanostructures (bare polymer reflectance 11%, nanostructured polymer reflectance 5%, Al coated nanostructured polymer reflectance 3%). The optical measurements were performed with an integrating sphere and a spectrometer. The contact angles were measured with a drop shape analyzer. The nanostructures were characterized with scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:Formation of polymeric spheres in nanometer to sub-micrometer is achieved through a spin-coating process with polyamide (from 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)dianiline and 4,4′-dicarboxydiphenylether) solutions in N,N-dimethylformamide and N,N-dimethylacetamide. The formation of polymeric spheres and their sizes are dependent on the polymer solution concentrations and the rates in spin-coating. The polymeric spheres could be obtained on various substrates including silicon, mica, and glass.

Abstract:Hierarchical structure consisting of ordered silica nanoparticles grown onto carbon fiber (CF) has been fabricated to improve the interfacial properties between the CFs and polymer matrix. In order to improve the reactivity of CFs, their surface was modified using poly(1,4-phenylene diisocyanate) (PPDI) via in-situ polymerization, which also resulted in the distribution of numerous isocyanate groups on the surface of CFs. Silica nanoparticles was modified on the interface of CF-PPDI by chemical grafting method. The microstructure, chemical composition and interfacial properties of CFs with ordered silica nanoparticles were comprehensively investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results indicated an obvious increase in the interfacial shear strength, compared to those of CF precursor, which was attributed to silica nanoparticles interacting with the epoxy resin. Furthermore, siliconborocarbonitride (SiBCN) ceramic was used as thermal barrier coating to enhance three-dimensional carbon fiber architecture substrate antioxidant and ablation properties. Thermogravimetric results show that the thermal stability of the CF with SiBCN ceramic layer has a marked increase at high temperature.

Abstract:Diamond shows great potentials as an ultimate material candidate for application in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). In this work, we report microcontact printing (μCP) transfer as a facile technique to fabricate diamond MEMS cantilever arrays. We started from the Deryaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) principles and formulated a colloidal "ink" that contains nanodiamonds (NDs) seeds well dispersed in polymethyl methacrylate/acetone. The NDs seeds were then transfer printed onto a silicon (100) substrate by using a flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp with predefined pattern. The densely packed NDs pattern (~10 9 cm −2 ) enables facile and selected-area growth of diamond with microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) technique. A diamond film with minimal graphite contaminants and low residual stresses was obtained after growth at 1118 K for 3 h. The diamond cantilevers were released from the substrate by wet chemical etching using KOH (40 % wt.) and isopropyl alcohol (10 % vol.). An examination of the vibrational kinetics indicates that the diamond film has a high Young's modulus (~795 GPa) and the cantilevers exhibit consistently distributed resonant frequencies and high quality factors in ambient air. The method opens the door for large-scale, cost-effective production of uniform diamond MEMS devices for sensor and quantum applications.

Abstract:3D pyramidal polymer single crystals provide spatial gradient variations within the crystal molecules, and these variations facilitate the study of the relationship between structure and properties within the molecules of various complexes with anisotropic structures. As described herein, a low-temperature-assisted microfluidic pore channeling approach is proposed to prepare structurally ordered polymer single crystals. A mixture of dichloromethane and dimethyl sulfoxide is used as a prepolymer, and a liquid microfluidic technique is employed to grow the end-functionalized polymers into 3D polymer single crystals. Through the ordered growth of single crystals, a personalized pyramidal pattern with a homogeneous structure is formed. To evaluate the mesh node density, low-temperature growth time and substrate type are also investigated. Rectangular, pyramidal, and dendritic patterns are synthesized via low-temperature single crystal growth. This work shows that low temperature-assisted microfluidics provides a novel means to tune the 3D structure of polymer single crystals.
