Abstract:Heterostructured semiconductor nanostructures have provoked great interest in the areas of energy, environment and catalysis. Herein, we report a novel hierarchical Ag3PO4/TiO2 heterostructure consisting of nearly spherical Ag3PO4 particles firmly coupled on the surface of TiO2 nanofibers (NFs). The construction of Ag3PO4/TiO2 heterostructure with tailored morphologies, compositions and optical properties was simply achieved via a facile and green synthetic strategy involving the electrospinning and solution-based processes. Owing to the synergetic effects of the components, the resulting hybrid heterostructures exhibited much improved visible light photocatalytic performance, which could degrade the RhB dye completely in 7.5 min. In addition, the coupling of Ag3PO4 particles with UV-light-sensitive TiO2 NFs enabled full utilization of solar energy and less consumption of noble metals, significantly appealing for their practical use in new energy sources and environmental issues. The developed synthetic strategy was considered to be applicable for the rational design and construction of other heterostructured catalysts. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs)/ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions were fabricated by a three-step method and investigated as photocatalysts. Experimental results showed that the novel material exhibited enhanced optical properties and a high degradation rate (for methyl orange) under UV light (109% compared to bare TiO2 NRAs). The high rate was attributed to an increase in the separation of electrons-holes induced by the introduction of the ZnO NPs and the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag QDs. The degradation mechanism was elucidated based on the band structure. It is suggested that the TiO2/ZnO/Ag nanostructure developed in our work can provide a new platform for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:A high performance photocatalyst based on a heterostructure using ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) decorating mesoporous anatase-TiO2 (B) biphase TiO2 nanowires (NWs) was synthesized by a facile water bath reflux method. The morphology, structure, and optical properties of the prepared hybrid photocatalyst were well characterized. The results showed that the mesoporous biphase TiO2 NWs consisted of TiO2 (B) and anatase phases. When ZnO NPs were loaded on the surface of biphase TiO2 NWs, a heterojunction was formed between TiO2 NWs and ZnO NPs that could favor the separation of photogenerated electronhole pairs. The TiO2-ZnO heterojunction exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity and excellent stability for both dye degradation and H-2 evolution compared with TiO2 NWs. The heterojunction with a 20 wt% ZnO content exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity and the reaction rate constant was about 4.2 and 1.3 times higher than that of TiO2 NWs for dye degradation and H-2 evolution, respectively. The main active species were found to be O-2(center dot-) and cOH by the electron paramagnetic resonance technique. This work may open a promising avenue in producing highly efficient heterojunction photocatalysts with special structures for large-scale environmental and energy applications.
Titanium Dioxide Nano-Heterostructure with Nanoparticles Decorating Nanowires for High-Performance Photocatalysis

Abstract:In this work, we have synthesized a nano-heterostructure of TiO2 nanoparticles decorating TiO2 nanowires (TiO2 NPs/NWs). Both the TiO2 NPs and NWs show an anatase crystal phase with {101} facet predominately exposed. It is found that the ratio of NPs to NWs affects the dispersion of TiO2 NPs and their combination with TiO2 NWs, as well as the separation of photo-generated charges and further the photocatalytic activity of the material. The heterostructure with a TiO2 NPs to NWs ratio of 1:1 (NP0.5/NW0.5) shows high activity and excellent cycling stability in both Rhodamine B degradation and water splitting. A possible charge transfer mechanism on the TiO2 NPs/NWs hybrid has been proposed to clarify the correlation between material structure and performance. This work not only demonstrates the advantage of 0D-1D nano-heterostructures, but also provides a facile approach of designing and fabricating excellent catalysts for energy and environmental applications.
Controlled Growth of AgI Nanoparticles on Hollow WO3 Hierarchical Structures to Act As Z-scheme Photocatalyst for Visible-Light Photocatalysis.

Abstract:Controllable fabrication of nanomaterials with hierarchical architecture have received much attention in the field of photocatalysis due to their enhanced light-harvesting efficiency. Moreover, fabricating direct Z-scheme heterojunctions havebeenproven to be effective way to enhance the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts. Herein, hierarchically hollow WO3 nanoflower was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal treatment of tungsten chloride (WCl6) in ethanol solution. Decoration of the obtained WO3 with AgI nanoparticles in situ can form the Z-scheme AgI/WO3 hollow hierarchical nanoflowers (AgI/WO3 HHNFs). The AgI/WO3 HHNFs exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and remarkable stability for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) and Eosin B (EB) under the irradiation of a low energy consume light (LED lamp, 5 W). Interestingly, compared to pure AgI nanoparticles, 3D hollow WO3 nanoflowers and AgI/WO3 nanosheets, the AgI/WO3 HHNFs revealed conspicuously enhanced photocatalytic activity. Thisphenomenon could be associated to three aspects, namely the high light-harvesting efficiency, increased light trapping and scattering capability and strongly coupled Z-scheme heterointerface, which effectively improved the photoelectron-hole sepreation efficiency. Our work therefore provide a novel insight for the fabrication of 3D hollow hierarchical structures.

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow heterostructures with ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet subunits have various intrinsic advantages in photocatalytic aspects such as increasing light collection, accelerating electron hole separation and migration, and promoting surface redox reactions. Herein, we demonstrated the rational design and construction of hierarchical hollow core-shell g-C3N4@ZnIn2S4 heterostructures with coating the ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on the hollow g-C3N4 spheres by a low temperature solvothermal route. The hollow g-C3N4@ZnIn2S4 spherical nanoflower realized the improvement of photocatalytic activity by multiple scattering and reflection of light in the spherical cavity. Furthermore, the photo-generated charge carriers can be effectively separated by constructing layered heterojunctions. The optimized g-C3N4@ZnIn2S4 exhibited the outstanding photocatalytic performance (nearly 84% degradation of tetracycline within 60 min visible light irradiation) as well as excellent cyclical stability. In addition, the total organic carbon removal (TOC) rate of the optimal g-C3N4@ZnIn2S4 composite photocatalyst can be reached up to 64%. Meanwhile, the possible degradation intermediates and degradation paths were analyzed by liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) test results. This work provides a feasible design idea of constructing the core-shell hierarchical hollow heterostructure photocatalyst with high photocatalytic performance.

Hierarchical TiO2 Nanoflakes and Nanoparticles Hybrid Structure for Improved Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Three-dimensional TiO2 microspheres with different hierarchical nanostructures were synthesized by the synergistic strategies of ultrafast electrochemical spark discharge spallation process followed by thermal treatment. The morphology, crystal structure, surface area, and photocatalytic activity of the hierarchical nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, surface area analysis, and UV-vis spectroscopy respectively. The nanostructure of hierarchical microspheres undergoes three evolution steps, which includes the change from nanosheets into hybrid nanoflakes/nanoparticles and finally to nanoparticles as calcination temperature increases, in line with the predicable trend of increase in crystallinity and decrease in specific surface area. Compared to other forms of calcined TiO2 samples (nanosheets and na.noparticles), the hybrid TiO2 nanoflake/nanoparticle hierarchical porous structure exhibits a higher photocatalytic activity for the degradation of organic compounds (methyl orange and bisphenol A). This is attributed to their larger specific surface area (similar to 116 m(2)/g), more abundant porosity, and good crystallinity. On the basis of this hybrid structure, a visible light sensitive Ag/TiO2 microsphere photocatalyst is designed which shows faster degradation rate under the visible light illumination (>420 nm). The porous microspheric photocatalyst does not lose its activities after recycled use, showing great potential for practical application in environmental cleanup.
Metal/TiO2 Hierarchical Nanocomposite Arrays for the Remarkable Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Metal/TiO2 hierarchical nanocomposite arrays were assembled by the deposition of aggregated TiO2 nanoparticles on anodic aluminum oxide templates and the subsequent loading of metal nanoparticles by electrochemical deposition. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized catalysts were evaluated for the degradation of organic dyes. Our experimental results demonstrated that the greatly improved photocatalytic efficiency of the metal/TiO2 hierarchical nanocomposite arrays resulted from their high surface area and symmetrical arrangement. As a prospective approach for wastewater purification, our work not only enriches the synthetic methodology for TiO2, but also provides valuable knowledge about nanosized photocatalysts.

Abstract:SnO 2 /ZnO hierarchical heterostructures have been successfully synthesized by combining electrospinning technique and hydrothermal method. Various morphologies of the secondary ZnO nanostructures including nanorods (NRs) and nanosheets (NSs) can be tailored by adding surfactants. Photocatalytic performance of the heterostructures was investigated and obvious enhancement was demonstrated in degradation of the organic pollutant, compared to the primary SnO 2 -based nanofibers (NFs) and bare ZnO. Furthermore, it was found that the H 2 evolution from water splitting was achieved by photocatalysis of heterostructured nanocomposites after sulfurization treatment. This synthetic methodology described herein promises to be an effective approach for fabricating variety of nanostructures for enhanced catalytic applications. The heterostructured nanomaterials have considerable potential to address the environmental and energy issues via degradation of pollutant and generation of clean H 2 fuel.

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology was recognized to be the effective strategy to overcome the obstacles of environment pollution and energy shortage, and the novel photocatalyst design/construction was the key point for photocatalytic performance improvement. In this paper, the Z-scheme Bi2O3 and CeO2 heterojunction was constructed on TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2 NTs) by the hydrothermal deposition method. The Bi2O3-CeO2 cosensitization not only extended the solar absorption region but also accelerated the photoelectron separation and transfer, finally enhanced the photocatalytic property. The photocatalysts exhibited the high RhB/MB photodegradation and Cr(VI) reduction, and the photoelectric conversion and photocatalytic H2 evolution were also preeminent. The Z-scheme heterojunction construction was recognized to be the reason for the high photoactivity, and O2- and OH radicals were formed and investigated as the main active species for the dye photodegradation. The work gives the simple method and idea to construct novel ternary Z-scheme heterojunctions with high photocatalytic capacity for environment remediation and new energy development.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting has been considered as one of the major strategies for the production of hydrogen, a renewable and sustainable form of energy. Herein, we report a facile approach to preparing hierarchical heterostructure of TiO2 nanosheets (NSs) supported on CuO nanowires (NWs) for photocatalytic water splitting. Initially, one-dimensional (1D) Cu NWs with diameter of 110 nm were synthesized and facilely controlled via the Maillard reaction. Subsequently, TiO2 NSs with tunable thickness were solvothermally grown on the surface of Cu NWs. 1D core-shell nanostructure with CuO NWs as core and anatase TiO2 NSs as shell was finally obtained by a simple calcination process. CuO NWs in the heterostructure not only played the role of backbones but also served as a great co-catalyst. Photocatalytic performance of the heterostructure was investigated and obvious enhancement was demonstrated in H2 production, compared to the pure TiO2 nanofibers which are achieved by growing TiO2 NSs on TiO2 electrospun fibers. Optimization of thickness of the shell shows that TiO2/CuO composites with ca. 100 nm TiO2 NSs exhibit the highest photocatalytic H2 generation rate that is 9 times higher than that of bare TiO2. The heterostructured nanomaterials have considerable potential to address the environmental and energy issues via generation of clean H2 fuel.
SrTiO3/TiO2 Heterostructure Nanowires with Enhanced Electron-Hole Separation for Efficient Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Heterostructure is an effective strategy to facilitate the charge carrier separation and promote the photocatalytic performance. In this paper, uniform SrTiO3 nanocubes were in-situ grown on TiO2 nanowires to construct heterojunctions. The composites were prepared by a facile alkaline hydrothermal method and an in-situ deposition method. The obtained SrTiO3/TiO2 exhibits much better photocatalytic activity than those of pure TiO2 nanowires and commercial TiO2 (P25) evaluated by photocatalytic water splitting and decomposition of Rhodamine B (RB). The hydrogen generation rate of SrTiO3/TiO2 nanowires could reach 111.26 mmol·g−1·h−1 at room temperature, much better than those of pure TiO2 nanowires (44.18 mmol·g−1·h−1)and P25 (35.77 mmol·g−1·h−1). The RB decomposition rate of SrTiO3/TiO2 is 7.2 times of P25 and 2.4 times of pure TiO2 nanowires. The photocatalytic activity increases initially and then decreases with the rising content of SrTiO3, suggesting an optimum SrTiO3/TiO2 ratio that can further enhance the catalytic activity. The improved photocatalytic activity of SrTiO3/TiO2 is principally attributed to the enhanced charge separation deriving from the SrTiO3/TiO2 heterojunction.

Abstract:Dendrite-like ZnO@Ag heterostructure nanocrystals are designed and fabricated by a facial two-step chemical method in a large scale. The heterostructure nanocrystals are composed of single crystal Ag nanowires as trunks and highly dense (0001) oriented ZnO nanorods as branches. ZnO nanorods with diameters of about 50-400 nm are vertically grown on the six lateral surfaces of the Ag nanowires. Ultrathin ZnO nanowires or nanotubes with a diameter of less than 30 rim are decorated on the ZnO nanorods. The photocatalysis test shows that the ZnO@Ag heterostructures exhibit a higher photocatalytic activity than the pure ZnO nanorods, thereby implying that the Ag/ZnO interfaces promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and enhance the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Constructing a hierarchical structure with tunable pore size is a practical method to improve the capacity of photocatalytic hydrogen production of catalysts. In this work, titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride (TiO2/g-C3N4) nanofibers with hierarchical meso/macro-porous structure are fabricated by combining a one-step electrospinning method and calcination process, in which the hierarchical meso/macro-porous structure is developed by introducing polyvinylpyrrolidone and liquid paraffin into the electrospinning solution. Comprehensive characterizations reveal that the hierarchical meso/macro-porous TiO2/g-C3N4 nanofibers have improved ultraviolet-visible light absorption, the separation efficiency of carriers, and photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic H2 evolution is up to 1202 μmol g−1 in 7 h, which is better than those of corresponding TiO2/g-C3N4 photocatalysts previously reported. This work provides a new strategy to build a hierarchical meso/macro-porous nanofiber and an ideal solution to improve the hydrogen production of TiO2/g-C3N4.

Abstract:Constructing multi-heterojunction photocatalysts with multi-sources for carrier generation and with multi-channels for carrier transmission is one of the effective methods for enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Here, a novel TiO2/g-C3N4/Ag-AgBr (TCNAAB) multi-heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully constructed by depositing Ag-AgBr nanoparticles onto 3D spherical TiO2/g-C3N4. With the optimal ratio of TiO2, g-C3N4 and Ag-AgBr, the TCNAAB-50 composite had the highest H2 evolution activity and generated 940.5 μmol g−1 of H2, which was 8.24 times and 2.72 times higher than that generated by single TiO2 and binary TiO2/g-C3N4, respectively. Meanwhile, TCNAAB-50 also exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity toward methyl orange (MO) with the degradation efficiency of 77.6% under LED light. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the multi-sources for carrier generation and the multi-channels for carrier transmission of the constructed multi-heterojunction, which help to effectively enhance the light absorption efficiency and the carrier separation and transmission. Based upon PL spectra, photoelectrochemical properties, radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectra, a novel double Z-scheme heterojunction bridged by silver was proposed. The design of high-efficiency multi-heterojunction with multi-carrier excitation sources and multi-carrier transmission channels can be employed in improving the photocatalytic activity of single or binary component photocatalysts.

Abstract:Taking advantage of efficient photoelectron transfer and high redox capacity, the indirect Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed by the hydrothermal deposition of Sn3O4–Ag–Ag2O nanoparticles on TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2 NTs). The morphology, microstructure and photocatalytic property of samples were adjusted by the Ag+ concentration, and the Ag-0.8 sample prepared with 0.8 mmol AgNO3 exhibited the attractive photocatalytic dye degradation and H2 evolution. The as-prepared samples displayed outstanding photocatalytic capacity and stability toward organic dye degradation and Cr(VI) removal, and the visible light-driven photocatalytic H2 production rate achieved as high as 55.79 μmol·cm−2 h−1. The indirect Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism was investigated based on the photocatalytic data and electron spin resonance (ESR) signal, which provided the guidance to explain the enhanced optical and photocatalytic property. The Z-scheme heterojunction construction would exhibit intense attraction in the photocatalyst design and application.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis provides potential solutions for many energy and environmental-related issues. Recently, various semiconductors with hierarchical nanostructures have been fabricated to achieve efficient photocatalysts owing to their multiple advantages, such as high surface area, porous structures, as well as enhanced light harvesting. ZnO has been widely investigated and considered as the most promising alternative photocatalyst to TiO2. Herein, we present a review on the fabrication methods, growth mechanisms and photocatalytic applications of hierarchical ZnO nanostructures. Various synthetic strategies and growth mechanisms, including multistep sequential growth routes, template-based synthesis, template-free self-organization and precursor or self-templating strategies, are highlighted. In addition, the fabrication of multicomponent ZnO-based nanocomposites with hierarchical structures is also included. Finally, the application of hierarchical ZnO nanostructures and nanocomposites in typical photocatalytic reactions, such as pollutant degradation and H-2 evolution, is reviewed.
Fabrication of TiO2 Hierarchical Architecture Assembled by Nanowires with Anatase/tio2(b) Phase-Junctions for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:TiO2 hierarchical architecture assembled by nanowires with anatase/TiO2(B) phase-junctions was prepared by a hydrothermal process followed by calcinations. The optimum calcination treatment (450 degrees C) not only led to the formation of anatase/TiO2(B) phase-junctions, but also kept the morphology of 1D nanowire and hierarchical architecture well. The T-450 load 0.5 wt% Pt cocatalysts showed the best photo catalytic hydrogen production activity, with a maximum hydrogen production rate of 7808 mu mol g(-1) h(-1). The high photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the combined effects of the following three factors: (1) the hierarchical architecture exhibits better light harvesting; (2) the larger specific surface area provides more surface active sites for the photocatalytic reaction; (3) the 1D nanowires and anatase/TiO2(B) phase junctions both can enhance the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and inhibit their recombination.
