Abstract:To obtain highly efficient and stable blue electroluminescence, two novel star-shaped compounds are purposefully designed and synthesized, which are composed of two functional groups, central triphenylamine (TPA) and peripheral anthracene (AN) or phenanthrene (PA) with obviously segregative electronic density distribution characteristics between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO and LUMO). As a light-emitting layer, they exhibit not only highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescence, but also good stability in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to the combination of several advantageous properties (electrochemical, thermal and morphological stability). In particular, for triphenylamine-cored phenanthrene (TPA-PA), the external quantum efficiency of 7.23% is the best reported result for non-doped deep-blue OLEDs, and the lifetime of the device is also improved, being twice that of 2-methyl-9,10-di(2-naphthyl) anthracene (MADN) under the same device conditions.

Abstract:Efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been characterized for a carbazole/sulfone derivative in both solutions and doped films. A pure blue organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on this compound demonstrates a very high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of nearly 10% at low current density. Because TADF only occurs in a bipolar system where donor and acceptor centered (3)ππ* states are close to or higher than the triplet intramolecular charge transfer ((3)CT) state, control of the π-conjugation length of both donor and acceptor is considered to be as important as breaking the π-conjugation between them in blue TADF material design.

Abstract:To increase the fluorescence quantum yield of hybrid local and charge-transfer (HLCT) material, we introduce a symmetric linear D-pi-A-pi-D structure into molecular design and synthesized a new blue emitter, 2,2 '-(2 ',3 ',5 ',6 '-tetrafluoro-[1,1%4 ',1 ''-terpheny1]-4,4 ''-diyebis(1-(4-(tert-butyl)pheny1)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole) (4FBTPI). Organic light-emitting devices employing 4FBTPI as a dopant emitter show good performances, with CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Enclairage) coordinates of (0.15, 0.09), which is very close to NTSC blue light standard (0.14, 0.08), current efficiencies (CE) of 6.03 cd A(-1), external quantum efficiencies of 6.94%. This performance is comparable to those of recently reported state-of-the-art deep-blue materials with CIEy < 0.10. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Conventional thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules achieve small energy differences between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states (EEST) by enhancing the intramolecular charge transfer, which inevitably leads to a wide emission spectrum and low fluorescence rate. Here, we prepared a deep blue TADF molecule via a small EEST pyridine-phenol fluoroboron complex as the acceptor. The small EEST is maintained when carbazole donors are attached to the 4-position of the phenyl rings in the fluoroboron complex. Benefiting from the strong electron coupling between the donor (D) and acceptor (A) moieties, the compound Cz-4-BF exhibits a high fluorescence rate of 4.8 x 108 s- 1 and a small D-A dihedral angle change in the excited state. Consequently, a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of nearly 100% and a PL spectrum with full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) < 60 nm were obtained in solution and low-concentration doped films. A TADFsensitized fluorescence (TSF) device containing Cz-4-BF achieves an external quantum efficiency of 21%, which is higher than the devices employing classical fluorescent emitters and multiple resonance-type TADF emitters. The Cz-4-BF-based TSF device shows significantly improved color coordinates of (0.14, 0.10) versus a control device without Cz-4-BF.
A Twisting Donor‐Acceptor Molecule with an Intercrossed Excited State for Highly Efficient, Deep‐Blue Electroluminescence

Abstract:In an organic electroluminescent (EL) device, the recombination of injected holes and electrons produces what appears to be an ion‐pair or charge‐transfer (CT) exciton, and this CT exciton decays to produce one photon directly, or relaxes to a low‐lying local exciton (LE). Thus the full utilization of both the energy of the CT exciton and the LE should be a pathway for obtaining high‐efficiency EL. Here, a twisting donor‐acceptor (D‐A) triphenylamine‐imidazol molecule, TPA‐PPI, is reported: its synthesis, photophysics, and EL performance. Prepared by a manageable, one‐pot cyclizing reaction, TPA‐PPI exhibits deep‐blue emission with high quantum yields (90%) both in solution and in the solid state. Fluorescent solvatochromic experiments for TPA‐PPI solutions show a red‐shift of 57 nm (3032 cm−1) from low‐polarity hexane (406 nm) to high‐polarity acetonitrile (463 nm), accompanied by the gradual disappearance of the vibrational band in the spectra with increased solvent polarity. The photophysical investigation and DFT analysis suggest an intercrossed CT and LE excited state of the TPA‐PPI, originating from its twisting D‐A configuration. This is a rare instance that a CT‐state material shows highly efficient deep‐blue emission. EL characterization demonstrates that, as a deep‐blue emitter with CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.11), the performance of a TPA‐PPI‐based device is rather excellent, displaying a maximum current efficiency of >5.0 cd A−1, and a maximum external quantum efficiency of >5.0%, corresponding to a maximum internal quantum efficiency of >25%. The effective utilization of the excitation energy arising from materials with intercrossed‐excited‐state (LE and CT) characters is thought to be beneficial for the improved efficiency of EL devices.
Efficient Deep-Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Employing Difluoroboron-Enabled Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters

Abstract:The design and development of efficient emitters for deep-blue OLEDs with CIEy < 0.10 remains a challenge. A new series of tetracoordinated difluoroboron (BF2)-enabled thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials with D-A-BF2-type and D-pi-A-BF2-type frameworks for sky-blue to deep-blue emitters were designed and developed. The emission colors could be effectively tuned through regulating the degree of conjugation between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) by simply introducing a methyl group into the phenyl ring to adjust the molecular geometries and change the acceptor moieties, which were strongly supported by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical studies. All the tetracoordinated difluoroboron TADF emitters are air-stable and insensitive to moisture, and they are strongly emissive in degassed toluene peaking at 435-471 nm with high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQYs) of 94-99%. The BF2-MPCz-doped sky-blue OLED demonstrated a peak EQE of 13.8% with a L-max value of 20853 cd m(-2) and CIE coordinates of (0.175, 0.354), and the BF2-DMCz-doped deep-blue OLED achieved a peak EQE of 8.4% with CIE coordinates of (0.149, 0.083). This indicates that the BF2-enabled TADF materials can act as efficient emitters for the fabrication of sky-blue to deep-blue OLEDs.

Abstract:Highly efficient deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is observed from a charge-transfer compound bis[4-(3,6-dimethoxycarbazole)phenyl]sulfone (DMOC-DPS). In comparison with the previously reported carbazole/sulfone derivative with tert-butyl substituents on the carbazole donors, DMOC-DPS exhibits a much shorter excited-state lifetime in both an aromatic solution and an organic thin film, because the change of the substituent on the donor affects the molecular energy levels of the first singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited states in different ways, decreasing the energy gap between S1 and T1 (ΔEST). An organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on DMOC-DPS achieves a maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.5% and reduced efficiency roll-off, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.16), owing to efficient exciton harvesting that occurs through triplet-to-singlet up-conversion.

Abstract:Metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have emerged as promising candidate materials for highly efficient and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, a novel acceptor 2-cyanopyrazine is selected for the construction of blue TADF molecules via computer-assisted molecular design. Both theoretical prediction and experimental photophysical data indicate a small S1-T1 energy gap (ΔE ST) and a relative large fluorescence rate (k F) in an o-phenylene-bridged 2-cyanopyrazine/3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole compound (TCzPZCN). The k F value of 3.7 × 107 s-1 observed in a TCzPZCN doped film is among the highest in the TADF emitters with a ΔE ST smaller than 0.1 eV. Blue TADF emission is observed in a TCzPZCN doped film with a short TADF lifetime of 1.9 μs. The OLEDs using TCzPZCN as emitter exhibit a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.6% with low-efficiency roll-off. A sky-blue device containing a derivative of TCzPZCN achieves an improved EQE maximum of 12.2% by suppressing the non-radiative decay at T1.
High-Performance Deep-Blue Electroluminescence from Multi-resonance TADF Emitters with Spirofluorene-Fused Double Boron Framework

Abstract:The development of multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials in the deep-blue region is highly desirable. A usual approach involves constructing extended MR-TADF framework; however, it may also intensify aggregate-caused quenching issues and thereby reduce device efficiency. In this study, we develop a molecular design strategy that fuses the MR-TADF skeleton with 9,9′-spirobifluorene (SF) units to create advanced deep-blue emitters. The SF moiety facilitates high-yield one-shot bora-Friedel-Crafts reaction towards extended skeleton and mitigates interchromophore interactions as a steric group. Our findings reveal that orbital interactions at the fusion site significantly influence the electronic structure, and optimizing the fusion mode allows for the development of emitters with extended conjugation length while maintaining non-bonding character. The proof-of-concept emitter exhibits narrowband emission in the deep-blue region, a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, and a fast kRISC of 2.4×105 s-1. These exceptional properties enable the corresponding sensitizer-free OLED to achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 39.0% and Commission Internationale de l′Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.13, 0.09). Furthermore, the hyperfluorescence device realizes an EQEmax of 40.4% with very low efficiency roll off.

Abstract:Organic luminescent materials that exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) can convert non‐emissive triplet excitons into emissive singlet states through a reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process. Therefore, they have tremendous potential for applications in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, with the development of ultra‐high definition 4K/8K display technologies, designing efficient deep‐blue TADF materials to achieve the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates fulfilling BT.2020 remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose an effective approach to design deep‐blue TADF molecules based on hybrid long‐ and short‐range charge‐transfer by incorporation of multiple donor moieties into organoboron multiple resonance acceptors. The resulting TADF molecule exhibits deep‐blue emission at 414 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 29 nm, together with a thousand‐fold increase in RISC rate. OLEDs based on our champion material achieved a record maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.8% with CIE coordinates of (0.163, 0.046), approaching the coordinates of the BT.2020 blue standard. Moreover, TADF‐assisted fluorescence devices employing our designed material as a sensitizer exhibited an exceptional EQE of 33.1%. Our work thus provides a blueprint for future development of efficient deep‐blue TADF emitters, representing an important milestone towards meeting the blue color gamut standard of BT.2020. Abstract:Achieving deep blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with narrow emission still remains a challenge. Herein, two deep blue TADF emitters DCBTRZ and PPCTRZ were designed and synthesized by directly using host materials, 1,4-di(carbazol-9-yl)benzene (DCB) and 2-[4-(9H-Carbazol-9-yl)phenyl]-1-phenyl-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole(PPC) as donors, and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine (TRZ) as acceptor. The two emitters have typical TADF properties. Both of them can emit deep blue fluorescence with a very narrow full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 42 nm in toluene. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of DCBTRZ and PPCTRZ are 39.6% and 38.2% in doped films, respectively. Devices based on DCBTRZ and PPCTRZ achieve deep blue emission(440 and 442 nm) with maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEmax) of 6.68% and 6.55%, respectively. Meanwhile, they exhibit very high color purity. The CIEy and FWHM of devices employing DCBTRZ and PPCTRZ are 0.059/0.063 and 56/54 nm, respectively, meeting the standard of NTSC for deep-blue emitter,which indicates excellent application prospects in displays. The results suggest that this strategy for developing deep blue TADF materials with narrow emission and CIEy<0.06 directly employing host materials as donor is feasible and effective.

Abstract:The main considerations in the deep-blue organic electroluminescence materials entail optimizing the utilization of non-radiative triplet excitons, alongside attaining exceptional stability and minimizing efficiency roll-off, thereby enhancing their overall performance. In this work, we develop a new hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) fluorophore, namely BOE, by incorporating a rigid and planar oxygen-bridged triphenylborane skeleton with anthracene and naphthalene units. The rigid and near-orthogonal molecular geometry endows it with excellent morphological stability and a rapid radiative transition rate, while maintaining deep-blue emission. Consequently, the non-doped device, exhibiting color coordinates of (0.154, 0.076), demonstrates an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.14%, as well as a small roll-off of 8.4% at 1000 cd m-2. By using it as a host for 1-4-di-[4-(N,N-diphenyl)amino]styryl-benzene (DSA-Ph), the device shows a maximum EQE of 5.31% at a ultra-high luminance of 28651 cd m-2. This work offers profound guidance for the development of high-performance, novel HLCT materials that exhibit both high stability and low efficiency roll-off.

Abstract:A novel phenanthroimidazole based emitter (TPETPAPI) with triphenyl amine (TPA) and tetraphenylethene (TPE) groups was developed. A high-performance non-doped organic light emitting device using TPETPAPI as emitter was constructed. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 3.8% (3.56 cd/A, 2.80 lm/W) was realized at a very low turn-on voltage of 3.14 V with a deep blue electroluminescence at 444 nm and a CIE coordinates of (0.168, 0.122). The integration of donor and acceptor units in a twisted conformation demonstrated a promising potential to develop efficient materials for organic light emitting devices. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Two thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) deep-blue emitters (4-SCZ, 4-SCZ-F) were developed by combining a novel spiro-type donor moiety with different triazine-based unit. By modifying the interplay between the donors and acceptor through tuning the phenylene linker using a fluorine substituent, singlet-triplet splitting (Delta E-ST) can be regulated. In addition, the rigid geometry of these emitters also ensures their high photoluminance quantum yield (PLQY). As a result, when applied 4-SCZ-F as the emitter, good performance with current efficiency (CE)/power efficiency (PE)/external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 11.16 cd/A/9.74 lm/W/7.21% and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at (0.16, 0.17) was achieved.

Abstract:In this work, a design strategy for deep-blue multiresonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) molecules was developed by the fusion of the weak O-B-N MR units and the peripheral modification of strong electron-donating diphenylamino group, resulting in hybrid long- and short-range charge transfer excitation characteristics with accelerated delayed fluorescence properties. As a proof-of-concept molecule, DOBN shows a narrowband deep-blue emission peaking at 438 nm and a small full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 19 nm as well as a high delayed fluorescence efficiency of 51%. Finally, high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) and small CIEy chromaticity coordinates were realized in both solution-processed (27.7%, 0.03) and vacuum-evaporated (35.4%, 0.04) hyperfluorescence organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing DOBN as the emitter. These results demonstrate a feasible molecular design strategy for high-performance deep-blue MR-TADF emitters and represent the state-of-the-art performances of deep-blue OLEDs in terms of EQEs and color coordinates.
Tuning Intramolecular Stacking of Rigid Heteroaromatic Compounds for High-Efficiency Deep-Blue Through-Space Charge-Transfer Emission

Abstract:A series of ultrapure-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters featuring through-space charge transfer (TSCT) have been constructed by close stacking between the donor and acceptor moieties in rigid heteroaromatic compounds. The obviously accelerated radiative transition of singlet excitons, the diminished vibrionic relaxation of ground and excited states, and the consequent reduced Stokes shift and the narrow emission are evident. The corresponding organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on AC-BO realize the best performance among all deep-blue TSCT-TADF emitters, with an external quantum efficiency (EQEmax ) of 19.3 %. Furthermore, the OLEDs based on QAC-BO display an EQEmax of 15.8 %, and achieve the first high-efficiency ultrapure-blue TSCT-TADF material with an excellent Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinate (CIE) of (0.145, 0.076) which perfectly matches the ultrapure-blue CIE requirements (0.14, 0.08) defined by the National Television System Committee.

Abstract:Overcoming exciton quenching and improving electroluminescence (EL) performances continue to pose persistent challenges in the development of efficient deep blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. Herein, an asymmetric multi-donors strategy is employed that provides the potential of establishing multiple radiative transition channels for fluorescence emission and reverse intersystem crossing (RISC), while allowing flexible modulation of packing modes in single-crystal state and optimization of morphology in films by modifying the substitution site of the donor units. As a result, intermolecular pi-pi interactions are effectively alleviated and a very smooth surface with a reduced defect density is simultaneously achieved, which can significantly reduce the density of triplet excitons, accelerate the charge transfer rate, and enhance carrier injection efficiency. Consequently, a super-high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 99% and fast kRISC of 1.1 x 105 s-1 are concurrently achieved for the proof-of-concept emitter 3,4-Cz-SF-SFAC. The corresponding deep-blue organic light-emitting diode (OLED) demonstrates an exceptional external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 31.1%, accompanied by an emission peak at 457 nm, one of the preeminent TADF materials within the deep blue region, ranking among the most efficient OLEDs with an EL spectra below 460 nm on record. An innovative molecular design strategy employing an asymmetric D-A-D' structure is proposed. This strategic approach leads to the establishment of multiple reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) channels and yields superior packing modes and morphology. The corresponding device achieves an exceptional external quantum efficiency of 31.1% with an emission peak at 457 nm, one of the preeminent materials within the deep blue region.image

Abstract:Tetraphenylethene (TPE) is a star group exhibiting an excellent aggregation-induced emission (ME) effect. Although significant progress has been made in the field of organic electroluminescence (EL) based on TPE-substituted emitters, highly efficient and high-color-purity TPE-substituted blue fluorophores with the AIE effect are still very rare. In this paper, a simple and effective molecule-N-phenyl-N-(4-(1-phenyl-1H-phenanthro [9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-4'-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)41,1'-biphenyl]-4-amine (TPETPAPI)-was designed and synthesized using triphenylamine (donor), phenanthroimidazole (acceptor), and tetraphenylethylene (ME generator). In tetrahydrofuran solution, the molecule emits little light and the quantum efficiency is low (1.3%); however, the fluorescence is enhanced in the film (73%), exhibiting remarkable AIE properties, thus enabling TPETPAPI to be used in future applications in organic light-emitting diodes. The nondoped device exhibits a low turn-on voltage of 3.0 V, a maximum luminance of 10780 cd m(-2), maximum current efficiency of 12.20 cd A(-1), and maximum power efficiency of 11.95 lm W-1 , with an EL peak at 476 nm. TPETPAPI exhibits the most impressive EL performance reported to date for a TPE-substituted blue fluorophore with AIE' characteristics.
