Abstract:Flexible electronic devices based on liquid metal fibers have attracted the attention of many laboratories in the world due to their convenient use and characteristics of being able to be woven into flexible textiles or applied directly on the body surface. In this research, we utilized the liquid metal mixed with copper particles (Cu-EGaIn) as the outer conductive layer of stretchable fiber, developing a highperformance composite conductive fiber based on liquid metal. The composite conductive fiber has three layers: stretchable elastic fiber core; adhesion layer; liquid metal layer. Specifically, the stretchable elastic fiber core provides the high tensile property, the adhesion layer is used to hold the liquid metal on the fiber surface, and the liquid metal layer makes the fiber have a high electrical conductivity. This kind of fiber not only has the characteristic of high electrical conductivity of metal materials, but also can always maintain high electrical conductivity even in large-scale tensile state. Therefore, we developed a tension sensor based on liquid metal intelligent fiber for human-computer interaction.

Abstract:Flexible sensors have attracted widespread interest owing to their potential in wearable electronics, whereas their electromechanical performance, cost, and comfort remain main challenges. Here, we report a liquid metal core-shell fiber strain sensor that demonstrates ease of manufacturing, environmental friendliness, cost effectiveness, and suitability for large-scale production. It also exhibits a high aspect ratio, great softness, extraordinary flexibility, and long manufacturing length to wrap around the human body, enabling it for stretchable smart wearable applications. The sensor can withstand extreme tensile strain up to 1,200% without significant sensing performance degradation. It exhibits excellent static and dynamic characteristics, including high conductivity, wide working strain range, good sensitivity, low strain detection limit, high resolution, low hysteresis as low as 0.03%, response time of less than 20 ms, high repeatability, and good durability. Finally, experiments where it is incorporated in smart fabrics further validate its potential for real-time monitoring in healthcare and physiological movement applications.

Abstract:This work presents a strain sensor which is based on high ductility liquid metal coated on traditional commercial lastex yarns with a unique spiral wound structure. The prepared sensor exhibits exceptional flexibility, elasticity, softness of 0.23 N at 100% tensile strain. It is lightweight, weighing only 1 g/m, and boasts a low cost of less than 1 dollar. The sensor has the ability to detect both static and dynamic in-plane tension and normal pressure. It showcases remarkable sensing characteristics of good sensitivity (0.82 for tension, 12.6 N-1 for pressure), extraordinary linearity within 10-100% strain range with goodness-of-fit value over 0.997, rapid response of less than 10 ms, high resolution spanning up to 0.3%, and high durability over 100,000 repetitive cycles. A smart glove based on the proposed strain sensors achieves gesture recognitions using machine learning technique, with an accuracy of 100%. The outstanding performance of this sensor highlights its potential as an affordable and advanced candidate for wearable electronics, which can have wide-ranging applications in sports, healthcare, entertainment, education, and industry.

Abstract:Fiber strain sensors are emerging as a focus in wearable monitors due to their excellent flexibility and weavability. However, a compromise of the detection range with sensitivity and hysteresis still exists in current fiber strain sensors. To overcome this deficiency, we propose a fiber strain sensor by using liquid metal (LM) and carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites (LM/CNF) as elastic and sensitive conductive materials and dip-coating it on a polyurethane elastic thread (PUT) by an ultrasonic-assisted method. It is demonstrated by morphological examination that there is an “island-bridge” like the network in the LM/CNF suspension and the coated LM/CNF on PUT by the ultrasonic-assisted dip-coating technique. The good sensitivities in a wide strain range are testified (i.e., gauge factors (GFs) of 14.8 ± 0.5, 35.7 ± 2.3, and 73.7 ± 3.9 in the strain ranges of 0–110, 110–150, and 150–220%, respectively) and proven to be contributed by the entangled LM nanoparticles by CNF microrods. Meanwhile, the short response times (304 ± 26 ms for loading 20% strain and 315 ± 28 ms for unloading) and low hysteresis are also manifested. All of these good features endow the LM/CNF-based fiber strain sensor with the capability to simultaneously monitor human health state and body movements; this great potentiality is also demonstrated by the on-body detections of respiration, pulse, voice, and joint bending. Finally, its conceptual application as a smart glove for gesture recognition is also carried out. In general, this work manifests that the LM/CNF-based fiber strain sensors may be of practical value in the field of health and motion detection.

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM) is widely used in flexible electronic devices due to its excellent metallic conductivity and ductility. However, the fabrication of LM flexible strain sensors with high sensitivity and linearity is still a huge challenge, since the resistance of LM does not change much with strain. Here, a highly sensitive and linear fully flexible strain sensor with a resistive sensing function is proposed. The sensor comprises an Fe-doped liquid metal (Fe-LM) electrode for enhanced performance. The design and manufacturing of flexible strain sensors are based on the technology of controlling surface wettability by femtosecond laser micro/nano-processing. A supermetalphobic microstructure is constructed on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate to achieve the selection adhesion of Fe-LM on the PDMS substrate. The Fe-LM-based flexible strain sensor has high sensitivity and linearity, a gauge factor (GF) up to 1.18 in the strain range of 0–100%, excellent linearity with an R2 of 0.9978, a fast response time of 358 ms, and an excellent durability of more than 2400 load cycles. Additionally, the successful monitoring of human body signals demonstrates the potential of our developed flexible strain sensor in wearable monitoring applications.

Abstract:The GaIn based room temperature liquid metal (LM) is a potential material for sensing applications due to its good fluidity and excellent conductivity. The change in volume or shape substantially modifies the LM electrical properties, especially in the case of limited volume. In this study, we coated LM on fiber arrays to establish a relationship between external stress and the electrical signal. The external force applied to the flexible fibers induces their deformation, changing the electrical signal. We recorded this change experimentally and established the relationship between the stress and the electrical signal. The sensitivity can be adjusted by the elastic module and length of fibers. Fiber arrays of different lengths may cover a wide range of stress values. This novel design has potential applications in the fields of sensing and stretchable electronics.

Abstract:Wearable tactile sensors can be used for haptic perception and are widely utilized in soft robotics, intelligent prosthetics, and other human interfaced/interface applications. The development of tactile sensors with for multifunctional tactile sensing capacity remains a challenge. This article presents the design and fabrication of a wearable tactile sensor based on galinstan liquid metal for the simultaneous sensing of temperature and contact force independently. The decoupling of temperature and contact force sensing, which is based on the measured output voltage signals, is achieved by a designed Wheatstone bridge circuit and by the structural design of the fingerprint-patterned microfluidic channels and the top oval-shaped protrusion. Characterization tests show that the fabricated tactile sensor has a relatively high force sensing sensitivity of 0.32 N-1 and its temperature sensing sensitivities are 0.41% degrees C-1 at 20 similar to 50 degrees C and 0.21% degrees C-1 at 50 similar to 80 degrees C. Two wearable tactile sensors are worn on the index finger and thumb of the human hand and are used to detect temperature changes and contact forces during grasping applications. The results show that the developed liquid metal-based tactile sensor has a high flexibility and durability, and can accurately measure the contact forces and temperatures simultaneously. Thus, the developed wearable tactile sensor has great potential for robotic manipulation and healthcare condition sensing in humans.

Abstract:A fusion of ultrahigh sensitivity and remarkable stability is demonstrated in a novel class of stretchable strain sensors employing a gated‐liquid metal channel structure. These sensors exhibit a sensitivity that surpasses current liquid metal‐based strain sensors by two orders of magnitude. With the ability to reliably capture both subtle and substantial deformations, they hold great potential for applications in wearable electronics and soft robotics. Developing stretchable strain sensors with high sensitivity and stability is crucial for various applications such as prosthetic hands, human health monitoring, and human‐machine interactions. However, achieving these qualities simultaneously remains challenging. Here, an inherently stretchable strain sensor is presented that integrates ultrahigh sensitivity and robust stability, enabling stretch, press, or bend sensing capabilities. This sensor employs a softer elastomeric channel filled with liquid metal (LM) as the conductive path. A stiffer elastomer convex integrated into the channel serves as a strain‐manipulated gate, controlling opening gap of electrical current flow path. During deformation, the softer elastomer undergoes cross sectional reduction due to the Poisson effect, while the stiffer convex gate retains its geometry. This heterogeneous deformation behavior leads to significant contraction or closure of the LM channel, resulting in increased resistance and a remarkable enhancement in sensitivity by more than two orders of magnitude. The all‐soft design maintains exceptional stability even under extended or repetitive substantial deformations. With the ability to monitor subtle and large human body movements, detect grip actions of soft grippers reliably, and monitor the gradual and extended growth process of plants, this sensor holds significant potential for advancements in flexible electronics.

A capillary fiber-based liquid metal pressure sensor

Abstract:The capillary fibers can easily be prefabricated in the factory, and their production cost is reduced. Moreover, the liquid metal fibers have the advantages of good integrity, excellent electrical conductivity, inherent stretchability, easy phase transition, and can be woven or knitted into smart fabrics. To solve the problems of the complex manufacture process and low integrity of lithographic sensors, capillary fibers replace the lithographic microfluidic channel to fill liquid metal to manufacture the pressure sensor in this paper. The prefabricated fiber is poured directly to produce the flexible chip. The steel shell is employed to increase the sensor's measuring range and to enhance its overall performance. Compression experiments on the developed sensor are conducted, and pressure-resistance curves of the developed pressure sensor are obtained. The analytical solution of the pressure for the developed sensor is derived, and the analytical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The cyclic loading experimental result shows that the measuring range of the chip is from 0 kPa to 1900kPa with a full-scale output value of 1644 mΩ, linearity varying from 0.14 to 1.22 mΩ/kPa, curve coincidence of 48.2%, repeatability of 2.77% and hysteresis of 5.26%. The measuring range of the developed pressure sensor is from 0MPa to 20MPa with a full-scale output value of 1046 mΩ, linearity ranging from 35.63 to 70.20 mΩ/MPa, curve coincidence of 7.5%, repeatability of 2.35% and hysteresis of 4.53%. The comparison of performance indexes shows that the capillary fiber-based chip has good measurement performance, and the introduction of steel shell further improves the measurement performance.

Abstract:Presently, a variety of soft sensing technologies are available, but there is still an opportunity to research on flexible sensors that can withstand high loads. Here, we report a highly stretchable, wide measuring range, and easy-to-fabricate liquid metal sensor capable of detecting force and strain modes. The key enabling design feature of the proposed sensor is the spiral winding combination of two different types of stretchable liquid metal microfluidic fibers. Pressing or elongating the fibers changes the geometry and, thus, the electrical resistance in a predictable way. The proposed sensor can offer a simple mechanism to measure force up to about 400N and strain up to about 200% under limited laboratory conditions. The sensor signal is repeatable in both cases. The ability of our sensor in wide measuring range in actual application is verified via detecting the loads of one human body and driving car wheel. We further show a proof of concept of the soft sensor by a soft robotic actuator, enabling the identification of bending angles and object surface features.

Abstract:Although flexible polymer composites based strain sensors have been widely studied, it is still a challenge to obtain flexible strain sensors with large working range, high sensitivity and reliable stability. In this research, a flexible strain sensor based on poly(styrene-b-ethylene-ran-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite fiber was prepared through the wet spinning method. In particular, the effects of MWCNTs content and aspect ratio (L/D) on the morphology, and mechanical, electrical and electromechanical properties of the composite fiber were studied. The results showed that with the increase of MWCNTs content, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite fiber decreased, while the electrical conductivity and the strain sensing range increased. For the same MWCNTs content, the composite fiber filled with MWCNTs of the lowest L/D ratio (1.25/15) showed the highest tensile strength and elongation at break; whereas the composite fiber filled with MWCNTs of the highest L/D ratio (20/15) showed the highest electrical conductivity, strain sensing range (0-506%) and sensitivity (gauge factor of 58.274 at 0% - 275% strain, and of 197.944 at 275% - 506% strain). The fabricated composite fiber could be formed into a knitted fabric and had the ability of detecting various human motions.

Abstract:Highly conductive and stretchable fibers have been increasingly investigated owing to their promising applications in flexible wearable electronics recently. Carboxylated carbon nanotubes (c-CNT) are coated on the flexible fibers, which is a convenient way to fabricate the wearable strain sensors. However, the conductivity of c-CNT is reduced due to the destruction of the graphitized structure of CNT during carboxylation. It still remains a significant challenge to endow the c-CNT composite fibers with high conductivity. In this study, highly conductive fibers based on polyurethane (PU) fibers coated with metal ions-linked c-CNT were prepared through improving the electron transport rate of c-CNT. The metal-coordination junctions formed by Fe2+ ions and carboxyl significantly enhanced the conductivity of the PU/CNT@Fe2+ fibers (up to 72 S/m). The high conductivity is the result of the coordination junctions with strong electronic state coupling to facilitate electron transport, which was proved by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The resulting coordination effect enhanced the interaction between the c-CNT, which made the conductive network more flexible. The strain sensor based on PU/CNT@Fe2+ fibers exhibited high sensitivity (gauge factor =36 at 50% strain), a large strain range, inconspicuous drift and durability. Fibrous strain sensor was successfully used to monitor joint movement and facial expression.

Flexible Tactile Sensing Microfibers Based On Liquid Metals

Abstract:High-performance and intelligent fibers are indispensable parts of wearable electronics in the future. This work mainly demonstrates the preparation of flexible intelligent liquid metal (LM) fibers with three core-sheath structures. An ultra-thin (10-50 μm), conductive, and highly flexible LM was deposited on the fiber core [carbon/polyethylene terephthalate (C/PET)--150-500 μm] along the fiber direction and then deposited on a polymer-protective layer [polyvinyl alcohol/epoxy resin (PVA/EP)--10 μm]. Four kinds of LM intelligent fibers were manufactured, including the C-LM-PVA fiber, C-LM-EP fiber, PET-LM-PVA fiber, and PET-LM-EP fiber. These LM intelligent fibers (diameter, 150-600 μm) were demonstrated with a high conductivity of 7.839 × 10 S·m. The changes in resistance in different torsion directions were measured, and these smart LM fibers could also be used as electrical heaters or thermoelectric generators, which released heat (36-36.9 °C/1-1.5 V) into the environment. Then, these multifunctional LM fibers were applied as high-performance strain sensors and bending sensors. These flexible LM conductive fibers could be successfully utilized in intelligent wearable fabrics and were expected to be widely utilized in artificial muscle and sensor fields.

Abstract:The fast preparation of the LM patch by constructing the LM‐iron particles‐Ecoflex (LMIE) ternary composite system. The LMIE large strain sensor exhibits a wide strain range of detection and breaking elongation, a fast response time, and excellent repeatability and stability. The LMIE exhibits the excellent potential of multifunctional liquid metal composites in wearable electronics and prediction devices of structural collapse. The small strain characteristics of the traditional flexible conductive composites hinder their realization of skin‐like properties and multi‐scenario applications. The value of liquid metal (LM)‐based elastomers is demonstrated in flexible electronics. Attempts in this area include the development of multifunctional LM‐based elastomers with controllable morphology, superior mechanical performances, and excellent stability. In this work, an efficient strategy is proposed to achieve the fast preparation of the LM patch by uniformly distributing eutectic gallium–indium–tin alloy in deionized water and by constructing the LM‐iron particles‐Ecoflex (LMIE) ternary composite system. In this study, the fabricated LMIE large strain sensor exhibits high sensitivity (the gage factor (GF) = 0.98 when strain ranges from 0% to 60%; GF = 1.91 when strain ranges from 60% to 100%), high linearity (correlation coefficient (R2) = 0.96 when strain ranges from 0% to 60%; R2 = 0.99 when strain ranges from 60% to 100%), a wide strain range of detection (e.g., 1%–100%) and breaking elongation (e.g., 450%), a fast response time (80 ms), excellent repeatability and stability. This work exhibits the excellent potential of multifunctional liquid metal composites in wearable electronics and prediction devices of structural collapse.

Abstract:Fiber strain sensors with robust sensing performance are indispensable for human–machine interactions in the electronic textiles. However, current fiber strain sensors are confronted with the challenges of unavoidable deterioration of functional sensing components during wearable and extreme environments, resulting in unsatisfactory stability and durability. Here, we present a robust fiber strain sensor based on the mutual inductance effect. The sensor is assembled by designing coaxial helical coils around an elastic polyurethane fiber. When stretching the fiber sensor, the strain is detected by recording the voltage changes in the helical coils due to the variation in magnetic flux. Abstract:Abstract Fibrous strain sensing materials with both high sensitivity and high linearity are of significant importance for wearable sensors, yet they still face great challenges. Herein, a photo‐spun reaction encapsulation strategy is proposed for the continuous fabrication of fibrous strain sensor materials (AMGF) with a core‐sheath structure. Metallogels (MOGs) formed by bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers and Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are employed as the core and sheath, respectively. The in situ ultraviolet light reduction of Ag + ensured AgNPs to maintain the interconnections between the BC nanofibers and form electron conductive networks (0.31 S m −1 ). Under applied strain, the BC nanofibers experience separation, bringing AMGF a high sensitivity (gauge factor 4.36). The concentration of free ions in the MOGs uniformly varies with applied deformation, endowing AMGF with high linearity and a goodness‐of‐fit of 0.98. The sheath TPE provided AMGF sensor with stable working life (>10 000 s). Furthermore, the AMGF sensors are demonstrated to monitor complex deformations of the dummy joints in real‐time as a wearable sensor. Therefore, the fibrous hybrid conductive network fibers fabricated via the photo‐spun reaction encapsulation strategy provide a new route for addressing the challenge of achieving both high sensitivity and high linearity.

Abstract:A highly sensitive sensor, which can detect the temperature and strain simultaneously, is proposed using a hollow-core anti-resonant fiber with composite nested tubes. The sensing fiber contains two kinds of nested tubes, and two different sensing mechanisms, the resonance coupling effect and the intermodal interference, are realized in the same section of a hollow-core anti-resonant fiber fully filled with ethanol. Five conjoined nested anti-resonant tubes are introduced to suppress the confinement loss of the higher-order mode LP02. One hybrid conjoined nested tube, which consists of a half-circular anti-resonant tube and a half-circular resonant tube, is introduced to induce a resonant coupling between the LP02 mode in the core and the dielectric mode in the nested resonant tubes. Numerical investigations demonstrate the shifts of the feature wavelengths of the resonance coupling effect, and the intermodal interference shows different velocities with temperature and strain, while a simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain can be realized with high sensitivities (3.36 nm/°C and −0.003 nm/με to temperature and strain, respectively). Since the sensor can be fabricated by full infiltration with liquid into the large-size core and cladding tubes of hollow-core anti-resonant fibers, and special post-processing, such as selective infiltration or coating, is notneeded. The proposed sensors based on hollow-core anti-resonant fibers with functional liquid infiltration provide a more efficient and versatile platform for the temperature and strain sensing.

Liquid metal circuit based magnetoresistive strain sensor with discriminating magnetic and mechanical sensitivity

Abstract:This work reported a stretchable, magneto-sensitive and discriminative strain sensor consisting of liquid metal (LM) as the electronic circuit and carbonyl iron particles (CIPs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite as the packaging material (LME-MRE). Due to the good elasticity of PDMS matrix and unique magnetic interactions among CIPs, the LME-MRE sensor was both sensitive to the external mechanical and magnetic stimuli. Moreover, owing to the fluidic nature of liquid metal, LME-MRE sensor also exhibited good electrically healing capability. The relative resistance variation (Delta R/R-0) of LME-MRE sensor reached as high as 1038 % under 40 % compressive strain. The electrical properties of LME-MRE sensor also remarkably changed under cyclic stretching and bending. Moreover, a 7.4 % decrement of resistance was achieved under applying a 300 mT magnetic field to LME-MRE sensor. Importantly, the magnetic and mechanical stimuli could be discriminated by LME-MRE sensor and a possible mechanism was proposed to describe the mechanic-electric-magnetic sensing characteristics. Finally, a LME-MRE sensor array is developed for the detection of both compressive force and magnetic field, demonstrating a broad promising in future intelligent devices, like artificial electronic skins and soft robotics.
A Highly Stretchable and Ultra-Sensitive Strain Sensing Fiber Based on a Porous Core-Network Sheath Configuration for Wearable Human Motion Detection

Abstract:Functional fibers have attracted much research attention due to their potential application in developing advanced electronic textiles for wearable devices. However, challenges still exist in preparing high-performance fiber-shaped sensors with superior flexibility and stretchability while achieving a high sensitivity and a wide detection range. Herein, we propose the design and fabrication of an ultra-flexible and super-elastic fiber-shaped strain sensor via a facile combining approach of wet-spinning and dip-coating. The sensor adopts a core-sheath configuration of liquid metal droplets dispersed in porous thermoplastic polyurethane as a substrate core and a carbon nanotube intertwined network embedding silver nanowires as a strain sensitive sheath. By taking advantage of both the composition of multiple functional materials and the design of a microstructured device configuration, the developed fiber-shaped sensor exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity (maximum gauge factor of 7336.1), an extremely large workable strain range (500%), a low strain detection limit (0.5%), a fast response time (200 ms) and good stability (10 000 cycles). In addition, the sensor is temperature insensitive, inert under harsh solution conditions, degradable and recyclable. Intriguingly, the fiber-shaped sensor can be used to detect various human motions and gestures by directly attaching to skins or elaborately weaving into textiles, demonstrating its great potential in human healthcare monitoring and human-machine interactions.
Strain‐Tolerant Nanocomposite Conductors with Engineered Bicontinuous Phase System by Additive Liquid/Solid Assembly

Abstract:Liquid/solid nanocomposites with engineered 3D bicontinuous phase systems are fabricated by an additive liquid/solid assembly technique. Flexible solid‐phase polymer skeleton together with conductive and highly deformable liquid‐phase are rationally constructed into a long‐range ordered nanocomposite framework, giving rise to excellent and strain‐tolerant multifunctionalities. Based on these results, the application in an interference‐resistance pressure‐sensing device is demonstrated. Intrinsically stretchable conductors are vital components in next‐generation flexible electronics. However, solid conductive networks are generally vulnerable to external deformations due to their incompatible mechanical properties with the highly elastic substrates or matrixes. It is still challenging to achieve precisely controlled conductive structure with stable electromechanical performances. Herein, a nanocomposite conductor with 3D engineered bicontinuous phase system is developed, which is constructed by alternately arranged robust solid‐phase and conductive liquid‐phase via additive liquid/solid assembly. The proper rheological properties and extraordinary structural compatibility of the liquid‐phase prompt the formation of bridged structure within the 3D periodic solid‐phase main skeleton, giving rise to stable and even strain‐enhanced electrical and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties under external deformation. A negative resistance change of −37% along with unabated EMI shielding effectiveness and mechanical properties are obtained at 100% strain, showing negligible performance degradation even after 10,000 cycles of rigorous stretching and releasing. A strain‐tolerant pressure‐sensing device is further demonstrated using the liquid/solid nanocomposite structure, delivering a unique function of precisely recognizing the local pressure at large tensile loading interference. This work provides a new paradigm for the manufacturing of nanocomposites with desired functionalities using the adequate nanofiller reserve toward practical strain‐tolerant applications.
