Abstract:The decomposition behavior of M(DPM)(n) (DPM = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato; M = Sr, Ba, Cu, Sm, Y, Gd, La, Pr, Fe, Co, Cr, Mn, Ce, Zr; n = 2-4) was studied in detail with infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The results indicated that the chemical bonds in these compounds dissociate generally following the sequence of C-O > M-O > C-C(CH3)(3) > C-C and C-H at elevated temperatures. The decomposition processes of M(DPM) n are strongly influenced by the coordination number and central metal ion radius. In addition, the decomposed products, in air atmosphere, varied from metal oxides to metal carbonates associated with different M(DPM)(n).

Abstract:The methods of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimettry (DSC) have been used to study the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP). TGA curves obtained under both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions show a characteristic slowdown at the extents of conversion, α = 0.30−0.35. DSC demonstrates that in this region the process changes from an exothermic to an endothermic regime. The latter is ascribed to dissociative sublimation of AP. A new computational technique (advanced isoconversional method) has been used to determine the dependence of the effective activation energy (E α) on α for isothermal and nonisothermal TGA data. At α > 0.1, the Eα dependencies obtained from isothermal and nonisothermal data are similar. By the completion of decomposition (α → 1) the activation energy for the isothermal and nonisothermal decomposition respectively rises to ∼110 and ∼130 kJ mol-1, which are assigned to the activation energy of sublimation. The initial decomposition (α → 0) shows the activation energy of 90 kJ mol-1 for the isothermal decomposition and 130 kJ mol-1 for the nonisothermal decomposition. The difference is explained by different rate-limiting steps, which are nucleation and nuclei growth for isothermal and nonisothermal decompositions, respectively.

Abstract:The energetic salt 2-azidoimidazolium perchlorate (AIM ClO(4)) was prepared and characterized by elemental analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FT-FR) spectrum. Its crystal structure was determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. The crystal belongs to orthorhombic, pbca space group, M(r)=209.56, a = 8.864 (2) angstrom, b = 11.608(3) angstrom, c = 15.543 (1) angstrom, beta = 90 (2)degrees, V = 1.5992(6) nm(3), Z = 8. D(c) = 1.741 g.cm(-3), F(000) = 384, mu (MoK(alpha)) = 3.712 mm(-1). The final R and wR are 0.0349 and 0.0801 for 1724 observed reflections with 1 > 2 sigma(I). It is concluded that 2-azidoimidazolium perchlorate is an ionic compound composed of a 2-azidoimidawle cation and a perchlorate anion, which are bonded together by electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonds, and the compound structure is stable. The decomposition of 2-azidoimidazolium perchlorate was studied by using TO-DIG techniques with a heating rate of 10 degrees C.min(-1), showing the compound contains one intensive exothermic decomposition stage. Sensitivity tests revealed that the title complex is very insensitive to external stimuli.

Abstract:The decomposition kinetic analysis of ammonium perchlorate (AP) has long been the research focus for involving various physicochemical phenomena. In this article, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements with specially made glass crucible were carried out to study the decomposition process of AP in the space-confined environment for the first time. It discovers that the peak temperature (Tp2) of high-temperature decomposition (HTD) and the final reaction temperature (Tend,D) shift to a lower temperature as the sample mass increased. It also indicates that such decomposition process can be deconvoluted into three reaction steps: endothermic, low-temperature decomposition, and HTD. Moreover, kinetic parameters of the reaction process were calculated via isoconversional and model fitting methods. The correctness of the fitted kinetic parameters was verified by the reconstruction of the primitive experimental curves. The obtained reaction model contributes to an improved understanding of AP’s thermal decomposition in the space-confined environment.

Abstract:In this paper, two kinds of flake aluminum powder are prepared by bidirectional rotation mill using the spherical aluminum powder (Al-1) as raw materials. The morphology and particle size distribution of Al powder are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and laser particle size analyzer. At the same time, the catalytic performances of the Al-1 and as-prepared Al powder on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) are studied through thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The results revealed that compared with pure AP, the exothermic peak temperature of AP/Al-1, AP/thicker flake Al powder (Al-2) and AP/thinner flake Al powder (Al-3) mixtures are reduced. The activation energy of AP/Al-1, AP/Al-2 and AP/Al-3 mixtures is reduced by 3.7, 16.8 and 17.6%, respectively. The reaction rate constant of AP/Al-1, AP/Al-2 and AP/Al-3 mixtures grows by 3.3, 18.0 and 32.5%, respectively.

Abstract:The molecular perovskite energetic materials (H2dabco)[NH4(ClO4)3] (DAP-4, H2dabco2+ = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-diium), limits its separate application in explosives duo to the severe negative oxygen balance. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the thermal decomposition performance of DAP-4 in the presence of AP oxidant. In this work, the differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DSC-TG-MS-FTIR) coupling technique, thermal decomposition kinetics, and in-situ FTIR method were used to analyze the thermal decomposition characteristics, and the variation of condensed phase characteristic groups of DAP-4 and the DAP-4/AP mixtures. The results show that AP has negligible effect on thermal decomposition temperature of DAP-4 but can prolong the total decomposition time of DAP-4 by 5.55 min. In addition, thermal decomposition of AP and DAP-4 in the mixture is independent of each other, and the thermal decomposition mechanism of DAP-4/AP mixtures is more complicated than that of DAP-4 alone. Thermal decomposition of DAP-4/AP mixture firstly experiences decomposition of AP at low temperature, the inside crystal transformation of DAP-4, the H+ transfer, and then cage skeleton collapse-induced redox reaction to generate large amount of heat which can shift forward the high-temperature decomposition peak of AP.

Abstract:In this work, we report the thermal kinetics, thermodynamics, and decomposition mechanism of AP-based molecular perovskite energetic materials and estimate their thermal safety performance. Typical AP-based molecular perovskite energetic materials, (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] (DAP-4), (H 2 pz)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ](PAP-4), (H 2 mpz)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ](PAP-M4), and (H 2 hpz)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] (PAP-H4), were synthesized and characterized. These were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that all of the obtained AP-based molecular perovskite energetic materials have higher thermal decomposition temperatures, and the peak temperatures are more than 360 °C. All follow random nucleation and growth models. Other thermodynamic parameters, such as the reaction enthalpy (ΔH), entropy change (ΔS), and Gibbs free energy (ΔG), show that they are generally thermodynamically stable. Moreover, their adiabatic induced temperatures were obtained; T D 24 of DAP-4, PAP-4, PAP-M4, and PAP-H4 were 246.6, 201.2, 194.5, and 217.5 °C, respectively. This study offers an important and in-depth understanding of the thermal decomposition characteristics of AP-based molecular perovskite energetic materials and their potential applications.

Abstract:Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is a crucial oxidizing agent in composite solid propellants, where aluminum (Al) is used as an additive to increase the energy density of composite solid propellants. The interaction between AP and Al significantly improves the ignition and combustion performance of propellants, but the mechanism of their interactions still lacks essential understanding, especially the interaction between AP and Al, as well as the Al surface containing aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ). To solve this problem, the adsorption and decomposition processes of AP and its decomposition products such as perchloric acid (HClO 4 ) and ammonia (NH 3 ) on the pure-Al (111) and Al 2 O 3 /Al (111) surfaces were studied by using the density functional theory (DFT). The effects of temperature and pressure on the adsorption and reactions were discussed. AP tends to adsorb on the pure-Al (111) surface with O-termination, while under the influence of Al 2 O 3 , AP is more inclined to adsorb on the surface of Al 2 O 3 /Al (111). At the low-temperature stage, the Al 2 O 3 molecules on the surface of Al (111) promote the disengagement H of AP decomposition and the adsorption and decomposition of NH 3 , while at the high-temperature stage, the pure Al surface is more conducive to the AP disengagement H and NH 3 decomposition. The increase in the pressure is in favor of NH 3 adsorption, but the effect gradually decreases. HClO 4 cannot adsorb on the pure-Al (111) and AP (001) surfaces, but it can adsorb on the surface of Al 2 O 3 /Al (111). In the gas phase, the decomposition of HClO 4 priors to NH 3 . At the high temperature and pressure, the pure-Al (111) surface can contribute significantly to the adsorption and activation of NH 3 . The findings are very valuable for regulating the combustion of solid propellants.

Abstract:Ammonium perchlorate (AP) includes oxidizing and reducing elements on the same molecule. AP can act as an efficient oxidizer and mono-propellant as well. In this study, AP experienced crystallographic phase change from orthorhombic centrosymmetric to non-centrosymmetric under controlled isothermal heat treatment. XRD diffractograms confirmed this crystallographic phase change. The thermal behaviour of activated AP had been investigated using DSC. Activated AP demonstrated high chemical stability with an increase in endothermic phase transition enthalpy by 170%. The enthalpy of the subsequent two main exothermic decomposition reactions was increased by 250%. Whereas AP demonstrated total decomposition enthalpy of 733 J/g, activated AP showed 2614 J/g. Activated AP can secure self-sustained response at a high rate. Propagation index (combustion enthalpy/ignition temperature) was employed to assess self-sustained reaction propagation. Activated AP demonstrated high propagation index of 8.7 compared with 2.5 for un-activated AP. Primary decomposition kinetic parameters had investigated using Kissinger and KAS methods. Activated AP showed an increase in activation energy by 89% using the Kissinger method; kinetic parameters using the KAS method were in good agreement with the Kissinger method. It can have concluded that AP with novel kinetic decomposition parameters for enhanced safety storage and high combustion characteristics has evolved.

Abstract:Given their unique and excellent properties, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have been used in many scientific fields. EMOFs use energetic materials as ligands, which can provide part of the energy for the system while catalyzing ammonium perchlorate. The energetic material 1,1'-dihydroxyazotetrazole (H 2 AzTO), as a high-energy nitrogen-rich material, was selected as a ligand. Five kinds of La 3+ , Ce 3+ , Pr 3+ , Nd 3+ , and Sm 3+ lanthanide EMOFs were synthesized and obtained. Single crystal X-ray diffraction tests were conducted to obtain the crystal structures of EMOFs 1 – 5 , which indicate that they have similar crystal structures. The thermal stabilities of EMOFs 1 – 5 , which are obtained by DSC tests, improve compared with that of the ligand. The results of thermic-decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and AP mixtures with 10 wt% EMOFs 1 – 5 show that except for AP mixed with 10 wt% compound 2 , the high-temperature decomposition peak temperature of AP mixed with other compounds is significantly advanced (up to 59.3–88.3 K), and the decomposition of AP is continuous and violent. EMOFs 3 – 5 have good application prospects for the catalytic thermic-decomposition of AP. Graphical abstract Five lanthanide EMOFs were synthesized based on the nitrogen-rich energetic compound AzTO. In the process of catalyzing the thermal decomposition of AP, the complex decomposes to form a uniform and fine metal oxides, which has a good catalytic effect on AP. Abstract:Energetic metal-organic framework materials (EMOFs) are a class of energetic complexes formed by constructing energetic organic compounds with metal ions, which have garnered considerable attention due to their potential catalytic role in promoting the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP). However, how to improve the catalytic effect is still long-standing issue for EMOFs. Based on the electron transfer between rare earth metal ions with positive holes in the d, f-orbital and ammonium perchlorate ions, three rare earth EMOFs (La2(tza)3(H2O)6·4H2O, Ce2(tza)3(H2O)6·3H2O, and Nd2(tza)3(H2O)6·4H2O) were synthesized by solution evaporation method and their effects on the thermal decomposition of AP were investigated. The three EMOFs are binuclear isomorphic and form thermally stable (T det > 630.0 K) 3D structures through extensive hydrogen bonds. In addition, the introduction of lanthanide metals can enhance the electron transfer ability of EMOFs and promote the electron transfer of AP/EMOFs mixtures, which is beneficial to modulate the catalytic performance of EMOFs for the AP thermal decomposition. The addition of the three EMOFs caused the high-temperature decomposition peak of AP towards the low-temperature. Meanwhile, the temperature of the high-temperature decomposition peak was advanced by 46.8 K ∼ 59.8 K, and the activation energy (E a) was reduced by 85.02 ∼ 117.71 kJ/mol, which could significantly improve the thermal decomposition performance of AP. Most importantly, compared to the other two EMOFs, the cation in Nd2(tza)3(H2O)6·4H2O has the highest effective nuclear charge number in the f orbital and strongest electron transfer ability, which can reduce the E a of AP to 96.85 kJ/mol. Overall, the strategy of construction EMOFs by increase the electron transfer ability can provide guidance for the exploration of novel and efficient energetic catalysts.

Abstract:The lithium perchlorate decomposition process under N2 atmosphere by five different heating rates was analyzed with TG-DSC simultaneous thermal analysis in the temperature range of room temperature to 900 ℃.Kinetic mechanism of lithium perchlorate decomposition was analyzed by both mass-change rate and energy performance of the chemical reaction process.αTG and αDSC were obtained from TG and DSC data,respectively.It was found that in the same heating-rate αDSC lags behind αTG and the delay increases with the increase in heating-rate.The decomposition process was divided into two-step consecutive reaction which should be fitted with two different mechanism function by single-scan rate method.The multi-scan rate method Friedman was applied to obtaining two sets of activation energies calculated from TG and DSC data respectively.

Abstract:Ammonium perchlorate (AP) catalytic thermal decomposition by metal oxides is complex and there is still no suitable quantitative evaluation method to characterize intrinsic catalytic activity. Here, a new method to quantitatively evaluate the catalytic capability of metal oxides for AP decomposition has been proposed. We introduce two indicators, intrinsic peak temperature (THTD*) and catalytic density (ρT*) in high‐temperature decomposition process, to uncouple activity and number of catalyst sites. Hematite (α‐Fe2O3) nanostructures with different shapes have been used as model catalysts to verify the feasibility of this method. Rod‐like α‐Fe2O3 shows the best catalytic performance in AP decomposition with the lowest THTD* of 345.1°C and highest ρT* of 0.544, which indicate the largest number and highest activity of catalytic sites. Moreover, these new indicators are theoretically proven to be reasonable by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Nano neodymium oxide has been synthesized by solid reaction at room temperature.The nano-Nd_2O_3/ammonium perchlorate (AP) composite particles have been prepared by a novel solvent-nonsolvent method. XRD and TEM are used to characterize this microstructure. The catalytic effect of nanosized Nd_2O_3 on thermal decomposition reaction of AP in the composite particle has been investigated by DTA method. It is shown that the decomposition temperature of nano-Nd_2O_3 /AP composite at high temperature side decreases (88°C).

Abstract:Orthorhombic structure perovskite ErCrO3 nanocrystals were prepared by glycine combustion method. The ErCrO3 nanocrystals were characterized by XRD, SEM, and BET. The catalytic activity measurements were carried out by DSC and TG-MS. The results indicate that ErCrO3 nanoparticles have an intense catalytic effect on the decomposition of AP. Adding 2% of ErCrO3 obtained product to AP decreases the decomposition temperature by 82°C and increases the heat of decomposition by 0.6 kJ g−1. Gaseous products of thermal decomposition of AP were NH3, H2O, O2, HCl, NO, HNO, N2O, NO2, and Cl2. The mechanism of catalytic action is based on the presence of superoxide ion (O2−) and oxygenic ion (O−, O2−) on the surface of ErCrO3, and they can accelerate the thermal decomposition process of AP and the oxidation of NH3.

Abstract:Crystal nanometer Cu powder, the average particle size of which is 20nm, is prepared in solution. The composite particle of the nanometer Cu and of micrometer ammonium perchlorate has been obtained by grinding. DTA was used to investigate the catalytic characteristics of the nanometer Cu. The findings show that the nanometer Cu makes both the low and the high temperature exothermic peak decrease 35.1℃ and 130.2℃ respectively, while the apparent decomposition heat of ammonium perchlorate increases by 172.7%, indicating that the nanometer Cu can produce very good catalytic effect on ammonium perchlorate. The catalytic mechanism of the nanometer Cu on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate is explored as well.

Abstract:The effects of aluminum (Al) and nickel (Ni) powders of various grain sizes on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) were investigated by TG and DSC in a dynamic nitrogen atmosphere. The TG results show that Al powders have no effect on the thermal decomposition of AP at conventional grain size, while the nanometer-sized Ni powders (n-Ni) have a great influence on the thermal decomposition of AP with conventional and superfine grain size. The results obtained by DSC and an in situ FTIR analysis of the solid residues confirmed the promoting effects of n-Ni. The effects of n-Ni have been ascribed to its enhancement on the gas phase reactions during the second step decomposition of conventional grain size AP.
Initial Decomposition Mechanism of NH 3 OH + N 5 – Crystal under Thermal and Shock Loading: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:NH3OH+N5- is a novel energetic material (EM) which has attracted much interest for its promising performances, including high energy density, high density, low sensitivity, and low toxicity. In this study, the initial decomposition mechanism of NH3OH+N5- crystal was investigated under thermal and shock loading by molecular dynamics simulation. First, programmed heating and constant temperature simulations were carried out by molecular dynamics simulation on the basis of density functional theory (DFT-MD). Results indicated that the initial decomposition reactions of NH3OH+N5- could be described by three reactions: proton transfer, ring-opening reaction, and cation decomposition and recombination, and three pathways of ring-opening reaction were found, including the ring-opening of N5-, HN5, and H2N6. The first two reactions are the main pathways that produce N2 molecules. Furthermore, we carried out DFT-MD simulations to study the shock decomposition behaviors of NH3OH+N5-, and three initial steps were proposed: N5-, HN5, and N6 ring-opening. The fewer N5- and HN5 ring-opening reactions were found during the shock simulation, accompanied by a significant change in the N5- bond angle. What's more, the transition states of decomposition reactions were investigated through quantum chemical calculations. The results revealed that the proton transfer reaction exhibits lower activation barriers compared to ring-opening reactions, and proton transfer would accelerate ring-opening reactions. In addition, the ring-opening reaction is the main energy-releasing reaction in the early stages of the decomposition. This work could promote the comprehension of the decomposition mechanism and energy release regularity of N5- ions.

Enhanced Thermal Decomposition Performance of Ammonium Perchlorate Using CuO-X/G-C 3N 4 Composites and Their Catalytic Decomposition Mechanism Study

Abstract:Improving the thermal decomposition efficiency of ammonium perchlorate (AP) is of great significance to obtaining solid propellants with excellent combustion performance. In this work, a series of copper oxide/graphitic carbon nitride (CuO /g-C3N4 ) composites were prepared by the deposition-precipitation method and were applied for catalyzing AP thermal decomposition. The CuO /g-C3N4 composites significantly reduced the high-temperature decomposition (HTD) temperature and apparent activation energy (Ea) value of AP and increased the heat release. Among them, CuO-8/g-C3N4 exhibited the best catalytic activity, which reduced the HTD value by 95.0 °C, increased the heat release by 505 J·g-1. The CuO-12/g-C3N4 also reduced the E a of the HTD stage by 47.34 kJ·mol-1. Catalytic mechanism study suggested that the CuO-X/g-C3N4 composites promoted the transition of electrons (e - ) and holes (h+) from ClO4- to NH4+ and inhibited the recombination of e- and h+ , which further enhance the thermal decomposition efficiency of AP. In addition, the exothermic reaction of N2O to NO was significantly inhibited by the CuO-X/g-C3N4 catalysts, thus increasing the heat release as evidenced by Real-time thermogravimetry/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This study provides an effective strategy for improving the thermal decomposition efficiency of AP with CuO-X/g-C3N4 catalysts.
Thermal Behavior and Thermolysis Mechanisms of Ammonium Perchlorate under the Effects of Graphene Oxide-Doped Complexes of Triaminoguanidine

Abstract:Several transition metal complexes of triaminoguanidine (TAG) nitrate, TAG-Ni, TAG-Co, graphene oxide (GO)/TAG-Ni (GT-Ni), GO/TAG-Co (GT-Co), and GO/ TAG-Cu (GT-Cu) were prepared using GO as a stabilizer. It has been shown that these complexes are promising energetic catalysts for decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP), which was uniformly coated with the mentioned catalysts. The decomposition kinetic parameters and mechanisms of the complexes have been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric techniques. Results show that the presence of GO in such hybrid catalysts is able to stabilize AP before its decomposition, but the strong catalytic effects occur on HClO4 as the intermediate of the initial decomposition of AP. In the cases of TAG-Co, GT-Co, and GT-Cu, they would make the twostep decomposition of AP into a single step. The heat releases have been greatly increased as well because of a more complete decomposition. More importantly, the thermolysis mechanism of AP could be changed by simply modifying the type of metal ions. Under the effect of these catalysts, the decomposition more or less shifts to two-dimensional growth of the nuclei model, which indicates that the metal ions played key roles as active centers. The decomposition usually starts from the surface of AP, where the contact of the catalysts further enhanced the surface reactions. The inclusion of GO on the surface of the AP crystal may hinder the evaporation of NH3, and therefore the mechanism has been changed to the phase boundary-controlled reaction.
