Abstract:Synthesis of diverse polythioimidocarbonates via ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides and isothiocyanates catalyzed by or-ganoboron catalyst was reported herein.Both aromatic and aliphatic isothiocyanates underwent successful copolymerization with terminal and internal epoxides,allowing for the precise tuning of the performance of the resultant copolymers over a broad range.The wide scope of available isothiocyanates and epoxides enables the direct construction of sulfur-containing functional polymers featuring both high glass transition temperature and refractive index.Additionally,it was observed that aromatic isothiocyanates polymerize much faster than aliphatic ones,and the reactivity difference facilitated the one-step synthesis of block polymers from mixed aromatic isothiocyanates,aliphatic isothiocyanates and epoxides due to the preferential incorporation of aromatic isothio-cyanates over the aliphatic analogues during their alternating copolymerization with epoxides.The produced polythioimidocar-bonates can be used as positive resists for electron beam lithography(sensitivity of 130 μC/cm2 and contrast of 1.53 for poly(CHO-a/t-EITC)).Coupling with their high refractive index(1.58-1.68),polythioimidocarbonates might find functional applica-tions in optics.These results render ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides and isothiocyanates a facile route to enrich function-al polymer library.
Design and Synthesis of Novel Iodinated Polycarbonates with Inherent X-Ray Opacity

Abstract:Biodegradable polymeric materials with X-ray opacity are unique in various biomedical studies in vivo, yet the available polymers, in particular functionalized monomers, are very limited. Herein, a novel iodinated cyclic carbonate monomer, 4-iodo-N-(2-oxo-1, 3-dioxan-5-y1) benzamide (IBTMC), was designed and synthesized by amidation and subsequent intramolecular cyclization using 2-amino-1, 3-propanediol, 4-iodobenzoyl chloride and ethyl chloroformate as raw materials. Then, a series of iodinated polycarbonates with inherent X-ray opacity were obtained via ring-opening copolymerization of IBTMC and trimethylene cyclic carbonate(TMC) using 1,5,7-triazabicyclo 4.4.0] dec-5-ene(TBD) as the catalyst. Their chemical structures and compositions, molar mass dispersity, thermal properties and radiopacity were characterized via proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1(H) NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT). The results illustrated that the iodinated polycarbonates had good thermal stability and outstanding X-ray opacity. Finally, a subcutaneous implantation experiment in ICR mice demonstrated the potential of the synthesized iodinated polycarbonates for in vivo deep tissue imaging.

Abstract:We present here a new programmable polymerization route for the synthesis of new conjugated polymers via one pot reaction route. The three component polycoupling reactions of terephthalaldehyde and dibenzylamine with 4,4'diethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl, bis(4-ethynylphenyl)dimethylsilane, 1,2-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene, N,N-bis(4ethynylphenyl)aniline, or 2,5-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,1-dimethyl-3,4-diphenylsilole are catalyzed by indium(III) chloride in oxylene at 140 C, affording soluble polymers with well-defined structures and high molecular weights (M up to 51 200) in high yields (up to 96.9%). Model reaction was carried out to elucidate the chemical structures of the polymers. The resulting polymers are processable and enjoy high thermal stability. The polymers carrying tetraphenylethene and silole units are weakly emissive in solutions but become strong emitters when aggregated in poor solvents or fabricated as thin films in the solid state, displaying a phenomenon of aggregation enhanced emission characteristic Thin films of the polymers show high refractive indices (n = 1.7529-1.6041) in a wide wavelength region of 400-1600 nm with low optical dispersions (D' down to 0.005). The polymers are readily metallified by complexation of their triple bonds with cobalt octacarbonyls. Pyrolysis of the resulting organometallic polymers at high temperature under inert atmosphere generates nanostructured ceramics with high magnetic susceptibility (M-s up to 80.7 emu/g) and near zero coercivity (H-c down to 0.19 kOe).

Abstract:Polymeric materials implanted in the human body are usually invisible under X-ray, and the mixing of heavy metal salts into polymeric materials by physical compounding often poses compatibility problems. A new iodine-containing cyclic carbonate monomer, 4-iodo-N-(2-oxo-1,3-dioxan-5-yl)benzamide (IBTMC), is synthesized, which has a degradable carbonate group as its basic structural unit and iodine atoms attached to the side chain in the form of covalent bonds. The ring-opening polymerization of IBTMC is achieved at room temperature under the catalysis of the solid superbase 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD). The structure and X-ray developing ability of the synthesized polycarbonate are characterized by <sup>1</sup> H-NMR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT). The iodine atoms remain bound to the polymer as covalent bonds after a series of reactions and exhibit a high level of X-ray opacity. In vitro degradation experiments of the polymer prove that the polymer is degradable.

Abstract:Fixing carbon dioxide (CO2) into polymeric materials is a subject of enduring interest but limited to very few efficient polymerizations. In this work, a facile Pd(OAc)(2)/(LiOBu)-Bu-t-catalyzed one-pot, three-component polymerization of CO2, bis(propargylic alcohol)s, and aryl dihalides under atmospheric pressure is developed. Linear and hyperbranched multifunctional five-membered cyclic carbonate (5CC)-based polymers with welldefined structures, high weight-average molecular weights (M-w up to 42500), and versatile properties such as aggregation-induced emission as well as chiral and porous properties are successfully produced in excellent yields (up to 96%). The reaction mechanism was well investigated via the density functional theory calculation and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, both indicating that there is synergistic reaction effect among CO2, bis(propargylic alcohols, and aryl dihalides. The polymers could be postfunctionalized by amines via catalyst-free regioselective ring-opening reaction with 100% grafting ratio. Thus, this work not only develops a new way to directly fix CO2 into polymeric materials but also provides the 5CC-based polymers with versatile properties, showing great potentials in diverse areas.

Abstract:Bonding iodine atoms to polymer is a common means of obtaining polymer with X-ray imaging ability. However, it is generally not possible to obtain degradable polymers with both high molecular weight and high iodine content. We propose a novel method for combining iodine atoms to polymers, which has a degradable carbonate group as its basic structural unit and iodine atoms attached to the backbone in the form of covalent bonds. First, cyclic carbonate monomers with a carbon-carbon double bond is synthesized, the monomers are purified and then polymerized to obtain polycarbonates containing carbon-carbon double bonds. Subsequently, the iodine atoms were successfully introduced into the polymer chains by the addition reaction. The iodinated polycarbonate exhibited high level of X-ray opacity. The structure and X-ray developing ability of the polycarbonates were characterized by 1 H-NMR, IR, XPS, EDS, GPC and Micro-CT. In vitro degradation experiments of the iodinated polycarbonate proved that the polymer is degradable.

Understanding Ring-Closing and Racemization to Prepare Α-Amino Acid NCA and NTA Monomers: a DFT Study.

Abstract:Polypeptides and polypeptoids are promising materials in biomedical applications bearing α-amino acid repeating units, which are prepared from ring-opening polymerizations of α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) or N-thiocarboxyanydride (NTA) monomers. Detailed studies on monomer synthetic routes are essential to explore new α-amino acid NCA and NTA monomers as well as the corresponding poly(α-amino acid) materials. In this contribution, density functional theory (DFT) is applied to investigate the mechanism of the Leuchs approach including two possible pathways, precursor structure and racemization in the ring-closing reaction. According to DFT calculations, pathway 2 is preferred with lower ΔG than pathway 1, and the rate-determining step is recognized as an SN2 substitution with releasing equivalent halogenated hydrocarbon, which explains our experimental observations. Racemization results from the reaction between the NTA monomer and a strong protonic acid, which can be suppressed by low temperature and short reaction time. Racemization is inhibited by steric hindrance in those NTAs of α-amino acids containing high bulkiness at the β-carbon, such as leucine-NTA.
Simple Approach to Macrocyclic Carbonates with Fast Polymerization Rates and Their Polymer-to-Monomer Regeneration

Abstract:Designing polymeric materials for closed-loop material streams is the key to achieving a circular society. Here, a library of macrocyclic carbonates (MCs) was designed by a facile and direct one-pot, two-step synthesis approach without the use of a solvent at a 10 g scale. We demonstrate that anionic polymerization with tert-butoxide enables the ultrafast ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of MCs with high conversion (>97%) within seconds (3–10 s) at ambient temperature. The polymerization rate depends on the odd or even number of methylene groups between the carbonate linkages in the MCs, and not the overall ring size, yielding an “odd–even” effect. This polymerization rate is related to the difference in molecular conformation of the MCs, as determined by X-ray crystallography. The polymers (polypenta-, hexa-, heptamethylene carbonate) were subsequently regenerated back to their original MCs at a high selectivity (95–99 mol %) and good yields (70–85%), hence taking a step toward closing the loop on these long alkyl chain polycarbonates.

Abstract:Aliphatic polycarbonates have gained increased attention as biomaterials largely owing to their biocompatibility and tunable degradation. Moreover, the ability to introduce functional handles in the polymer backbone through careful design of cyclic carbonate monomers or copolymerization with other biodegradable polymers has significantly contributed to the interest in exploiting this class of materials for biomedical applications. Such investigations have enabled their utility to be expanded to a wide variety of applications in the biomedical field, from drug delivery to tissue regeneration and the design of vascular grafts. Herein, we review the synthesis, degradation, and studies into biomedical applications of aliphatic polycarbonates obtained by ring-opening polymerization of cyclic carbonate monomers (ring sizes between 6 and 8). While all synthetic methods will be covered, particular emphasis will be given to materials that have been exploited for therapeutic applications in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract:Herein, a new class of main chain functionalized aliphatic polycarbonates with sulfur/selenium functional groups on the backbone is reported. Sulfur/selenium-containing cyclic carbonate monomers (M-R) are designed and synthesized by enzyme-catalyzed intermolecular macroring closure of related diols. The proposed synthetic strategy is tolerant of other functionalities such as N-substituted groups. The ring opening polymerization (ROP) of M-R occurs readily as a versatile route to generate a new family of main chain sulfur/selenium substituted aliphatic polycarbonates (PR) with predictable molecular weights (MW), narrow molecular-weight distribution and controlled copolymer composition. The resultant polymers can be oxidized and/or reduced by treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or dithiothreitol (DTT), highlighting their potential for applications in the stimuli-responsive field and inflammation/cancer targeting. With these desirable results, it is revealed that this versatile technique can provide a broad-reaching method to the next generation of innovative materials, especially, well-defined biodegradable chalcogen-based main chain functional biomaterials.

Abstract:A new catalytic route has been developed for the coupling of epoxides and CO2 affording polymerizable six‐membered bicyclic carbonates. Cyclic epoxides equipped with a b‐positioned OH group can be transformed into structurally diverse bicyclic cyclic carbonates in good yields and with high selectivity. Key to the chemo‐selectivity is the difference between the reactivity of syn‐ and anti‐configured epoxy alcohols, with the latter leading to six‐membered ring carbonate formation in the presence of a binary Al(III) aminotriphenolate complex/DIPEA catalyst. X‐ray analyses show that the conversion of the syn‐configured substrate evolves via a standard double inversion pathway providing a five‐membered carbonate product, whereas the anti‐isomer allows for activation of the oxirane unit of the substrate opposite to the pendent alcohol. The potential use of these bicyclic products is shown in ring‐opening polymerization offering access to rigid polycarbonates with improved thermal resistance.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Radiopaque Poly(Ether Urethane) With Iodine-Containing Diol As Chain Extender

Abstract:Novel radiopaque iodinated poly(ether urethane) (IPEU) was prepared by using iodine-containing diol as chain extender in a normal two-step condensation polymerization process. This new iodine-containing diol was synthesized by iodination of terephthalic acid and then reaction with 3-amino-propanol. The chemical structure of the diol chain extender and IPEU was characterized, and the basic properties of IPEU were measured and compared with PEU. X-ray images showed that 15 wt % iodine-containing IPEUs were highly radiopaque, and radiopacity did not decrease after 6-week oxidative degradation treatment. Experimental results showed that IPEUs possessed good thermal stability, favorable mechanical properties, and noncytotoxicity. These results reveal that it is an effective route for the synthesis of biological polyurethane with radiopacity by using iodine-containing diol as chain extender. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Basic-functionalized Ionic Porous Organic Polymers: Triple Roles in One for Highly Efficient and Recyclable Carboxylative Cyclization of CO2 under Mild Conditions.

Abstract:The transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value chemicals is a significant step towards achieving the goal of "carbon neutrality". α-methylene cyclic carbonate, as an intermediate for the synthesis of many important organic compounds, is widely employed in industrial productions. In this work, a series of ionic porous organic polymers (IPOPs) with different basic-functionalized anions were successfully synthesized and adjusted to have certain BET surface areas and high contents of ion sites by post-modification. These basic-functionalized IPOPs could exhibit excellent catalytic performance for carboxylative cyclization of CO2 at 30 oC and 1 bar in presence of silver salts, eliminating the use of extra organic bases. In the whole catalytic reaction, the basic-functionalized anions could play triple roles: enriching CO2 for further transformation, activating the hydroxyl groups of substrates to improve the catalytic performance, while coordinating with Ag atom to stabilize and regenerate catalyst. Notably, the catalytic system of DCX-4-Tet/Ag2O exhibited excellent recyclability, and the yield of α-alkylidene cyclic carbonate was well maintained at 99% after 5 cycles. To the best of our knowledge, the catalytic system was the first example of basic-functionalized IPOPs that played multiple roles for highly efficient CO2 cyclization under mild conditions without any extra organic bases.

Abstract:Two new chiral ionic liquids, 1-((-)-menthoxycarbonylmethylene)-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate and 1-((-)-menihoxycarbonylmethylene)-3-hexadecylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, were designed and prepared. Their chemical structures were characterized by H-1-NMR. Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in these two ionic liquids was carried out using AIBN/CuCl2/bipy as the initiating. system. The resultant well-defined polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was employed as a macroinitiator to induce the atom transfer radical polymerization of menthyl methacrylate (MnMA) in chlorobenzene, which yielded a PMMA-b-PMnMA diblock copolymer with narrow polydispersity.

Abstract:Although visible-light photoredox catalysis has implemented diverse reaction mechanisms for the synthesis of well-defined polymers with precision spatiotemporal control, the tolerance of redox-sensitive monomers remains a formidable challenge. In an alternative way, the photoiniferter polymerization technique offers an opportunity to address this unmet need. Herein, we report an efficient iodine-transfer radical ring-opening polymerization of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs), affording unsaturated linear polymers with predictable molecular weight and low dispersity. Commercially available alkyl iodide and light strips are used to initiate and control the polymer chain growth. Notably, this light-driven system tolerates active pentafluorophenyl ester group, whereby nearly quantitative post-modifications proceed and have rendered one-for-all preparation of polymers including crystalline semi-fluorinated P(VCPs) with enhanced material properties.

Abstract:Herein is overcome the long-standing challenge of the ring-opening aminolysis of CO2-derived tetrasubstituted cyclic carbonates at room temperature (r.T) under catalyst-free conditions. Molecular design of the cyclic carbonate by substitution of an alkyl group by a thioether unlocks quantitative conversion at r.T and ensures total regioselectivity toward highly substituted oxazolidone scaffolds. An in-depth rationalization of the high reactivity of these cyclic carbonate structures and of the aminolysis reaction mechanism is provided by a computational study supporting experimental observations. The high efficiency of the reaction is then translated to the deconstruction of high-performance thermoplastics containing tetrasubstituted cyclic carbonate linkages to deliver building blocks that are re-used for designing recyclable thermosets bearing dynamic N,S-acetal linkages.

Abstract:The innovation in polymer design to rival conventional polyethylene glycol (PEG) is an important approach to achieving a more sustainable society. Here, cyclic PEG-like polycarbonates having high molecular weight (4.4–49.5 kg/mol) were enabled through zwitterionic ring-opening polymerization (ZROP) of macrocyclic carbonates (MCs) mediated by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC). The thermodynamic behavior of polymerization depends on the ring size of monomers. During this process, the ZROP of 11-membered MC was driven by the change of enthalpy (ΔHp) which differed from the ZROP of 14-membered MC driven by the entropic change (ΔSp). Cyclic polycarbonates depicted improved thermostability (T d5% ≥ 204 °C) and higher glass transition temperatures (T g > -40 °C) in comparison to their linear analogues (T d5% ≤ 185 °C, T g ∼-50 °C). In addition, the mechanism of ZROP of MC was addressed through computational study. A distinct mechanism of polymerization distinguishable from the well-known NHC-mediated ZROP of cyclic esters was revealed, where the zwitterion from nucleophilic addition to MC, i.e. tetrahedral intermediate, cannot be ring-opened probably due to the delocalization of negative charge on the carbonate group, but serves as an active center for the polymerization. In comparison to PEG, the attained polymer demonstrated comparable hydrophilic and biocompatible properties, as revealed by the results of contact angle and in vitro cytotoxicity studies, suggesting that cyclic polycarbonate hold the promise as the alternative of PEG.

Creating high-affinity binding sites for efficient CO2 and iodine vapor uptake through direct synthesis of novel triazine-based covalent organic polymers

Abstract:Two types of triazine-based covalent organic polymers were successfully constructed through a one-pot and catalyst-free polycondensation approach. More specifically, two kinds of aromatic aldehyde containing different hydroxyl content named terephthalaldehyde and 2, 4, 6-trihydroxyisophthalaldehyde were selected and the derived polymers (denoted as POPs-1 and POPs-2) with large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas (> 360 m 2 /g), high total pore volume (> 0.47 m 3 /g), good stability and different heteroatoms (such as N and O) contents were prepared. Interestingly, POPs-1 featuring high BET surface area and N content (up to 34.83 %) exhibited excellent iodine vapor uptake of 441 wt% at 348 K/1.0 bar, POPs-2 with high O content (up to 25.83 %) showed better CO 2 adsorption capacity (91.8 mg/g) at 273 K/1.0 bar and higher isosteric heat of adsorption (up to 85.0 kJ/mol) than that of POPs-1. This value of the isosteric heat is the highest value reported to date for porous organic polymers. This excellent adsorption performance was resulted either from the large BET surface area or high heteroatoms (N and O) contents of the porous adsorbents. The study offer an alternative route to develop high-performance porous adsorbents to capture carbon dioxide and iodine.

Abstract:A series of "all-in-one" hypercrosslinked polymers (HCP OH -C n ) have been synthesized by Friedel–Crafts alkylation of phenols tethered with adjustable alkyl chains and the quaternization reaction of N , N -dimethylethylenediamine in one-pot in the presence of dibromomethylbenzene as the crosslinking and ammonium agent. After characterization, the polymers were implemented for sustainable CO 2 conversion and iodine adsorption. The experimental results showed that HCP OH -C 12 can effectively catalyze the CO 2 cycloaddition reaction, and an excellent yield of 94% was confirmed after optimizing the conditions. The outstanding activity is attributed to the lower activation energy (69.52 kJ mol −1 ). The polymer of HCP OH -C 12 exhibits excellent substrate adaptability and recyclability, and a possible catalytic mechanism has been proposed. Furthermore, HCP OH -C 0 has showcased an impressive adsorption capacity for iodine, with the process aligning well with second-order adsorption kinetics and conforming to Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Iodine adsorption on HCP OH -C 0 is characterized as a spontaneous and endothermic process, indicative of an increase in the disorder at the solid–liquid interface during the adsorption phase.
