Abstract:Ensuring reliable access to dean and affordable water is one of the greatest global challenges of this century. As the world's population increases, water pollution becomes more complex and difficult to remove, and global climate change threatens to exacerbate water scarcity in many areas, the magnitude of this challenge is rapidly increasing. Wastewater reuse is becoming a common necessity, even as a source of potable water, but our separate wastewater collection and water supply systems are not designed to accommodate this pressing need. Furthermore, the aging centralized water and wastewater infrastructure in the developed world faces growing demands to produce higher quality water using less energy and with lower treatment costs. In addition, it is impractical to establish such massive systems in developing regions that currently lack water and wastewater infrastructure. These challenges underscore the need for technological innovation to transform the way we treat, distribute, use, and reuse water toward a distributed, differential water treatment and reuse paradigm (i.e., treat water and wastewater locally only to the required level dictated by the intended use).Nanotechnology offers opportunities to develop next-generation water supply systems. This Account reviews promising nanotechnology-enabled water treatment processes and provides a broad view on how they could transform our water supply and wastewater treatment systems. The extraordinary properties of nanomaterials, such as high surface area, photosensitivity, catalytic and antimicrobial activity, electrochemical, optical, and magnetic properties, and tunable pore size and surface chemistry, provide useful features for many applications. These applications include sensors for water quality monitoring, specialty adsorbents, solar disinfection/decontamination, and high performance membranes. More importantly, the modular, multifunctional and high-efficiency processes enabled by nanotechnology provide a promising route both to retrofit aging infrastructure and to develop high performance, low maintenance decentralized treatment systems including point-of-use devices.Broad implementation of nanotechnology in water treatment will require overcoming the relatively high costs of nanomaterials by enabling their reuse and mitigating risks to public and environmental health by minimizing potential exposure to nanoparticles and promoting their safer design. The development of nanotechnology must go hand in hand with environmental health and safety research to alleviate unintended consequences and contribute toward sustainable water management.

Abstract:The lack of clean and safe drinking water is responsible for more deaths than war, terrorism and weapons of mass destruction combined. This suggests contaminated water poses a significant threat to human health and welfare. In addition, standard water disinfection approaches such as sedimentation, filtration, and chemical or biological degradation are not fully capable of destroying emerging contaminants (e.g. pesticides, pharmaceutical waste products) or certain types of bacteria (e.g. Cryptosporidium parvum). Nanomaterials and nanotechnology based devices can potentially be employed to solve the challenges posed by various contaminants and microorganisms. Nanomaterials of different shapes, namely nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanowires and fibers have the ability to function as adsorbents and catalysts. These possess an expansive array of physicochemical characteristics deeming them highly attractive for the production of reactive media for water membrane filtration, a vital step in the production of potable water. As a result of their exceptional adsorptive capacity for water contaminants, graphene based nanomaterials have emerged as an area of significant importance in the area of membrane filtration and water treatment. In addition, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) together with or without sources of light irradiation or ultrasound, have been found to be promising alternatives for water treatment at near ambient temperature and pressure. Furthermore, the uses of visible light active titanium dioxide photocatalysts and photo-Fenton processes have shown significant potential for water purification. A wide variety of nanomaterial based sensors, for the monitoring of water quality, have also been reviewed in detail. In conclusion, the rapid and continued growth in the area of nanomaterial based devices offers significant hope for addressing future water quality challenges.

Abstract:Availability of clean and safe freshwater has become a looming global concern. The accelerated demography, industrialization, and climate changes contaminate the meager freshwater reserves. Pollution of water bodies is significantly detrimental to health, ecology, economy, and society. The rising number of malnutrition cases, stunted growth, hepatitis, gastroenteritis, skin ailments, cholera, respiratory disorders, liver malfunction, eye infections, and mortality have been attributed to exposure to compromised water. Thus, optimized, durable, and inexpensive wastewater treatment and remediation processes are necessary. Current conventional treatment strategies suffer from several drawbacks, which may be mitigated through nanotechnological intercession, promising sustainability. Nanomaterials include nanosorbents, carbon nanotubes, nanocomposites, nanofibers, graphene, nanodendrimers, nanomembranes, and nanocatalysts. They have unique properties that make attractive alternatives for wastewater remediation, purification, and contamination detection through pollutant-specific nanosensors and detectors. This review discusses water pollution, its impacts, conventional treatment strategies, nanotechnological contributions, venture possibilities, and associated commercial opportunities.

Abstract:Clean and safe water is a fundamental human need for multi-faceted development of society and a thriving economy. Brisk rises in populations, expanding industrialization, urbanization and extensive agriculture practices have resulted in the generation of wastewater which have not only made the water dirty or polluted, but also deadly. Millions of people die every year due to diseases communicated through consumption of water contaminated by deleterious pathogens. Although various methods for wastewater treatment have been explored in the last few decades but their use is restrained by many limitations including use of chemicals, formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), time consumption and expensiveness. Nanotechnology, manipulation of matter at a molecular or an atomic level to craft new structures, devices and systems having superior electronic, optical, magnetic, conductive and mechanical properties, is emerging as a promising technology, which has demonstrated remarkable feats in various fields including wastewater treatment. Nanomaterials encompass a high surface to volume ratio, a high sensitivity and reactivity, a high adsorption capacity, and ease of functionalization which makes them suitable for application in wastewater treatment. In this article we have reviewed the techniques being developed for wastewater treatment using nanotechnology based on adsorption and biosorption, nanofiltration, photocatalysis, disinfection and sensing technology. Furthermore, this review also highlights the fate of the nanomaterials in wastewater treatment as well as risks associated with their use.

Abstract:Water pollution and global freshwater crisis is the most alarming concern of 21st century, as they threaten the sustainability and ecological balance of the environment. The growth of global population, climate change, and expansion of industrial processes are the main causes of this crisis. Therefore, effective remediation of polluted water by the means of detoxification and purification are of paramount importance. To this end, nanoscience and nanotechnology have emerged as a viable option that hold tremendous potential toward advancement of wastewater treatment methods to enhance treatment efficiency along with augmenting water supply via utilization of unconventional water sources. Materials at the nano level have shown great promise toward water treatment applications owing to their unique physicochemical properties. In this focus article, we highlight the role of fundamental new properties at the nano scale and material properties that are drastically increased due to the nano dimension (e.g. volume-surface ratio) and highlighting thier impact and potential toward water treatment. We identify and discuss how nano-properties could improve the three main domains of water remediation: the individuation of pollutants, their adsorption and catalytic degradation. After discussing on all the benefitial aspects we further refelct on the key challenges associated with nanomaterials for water treatment. Looking at the current state-of-the-art, the potential as well as the challenges of nanomatrerials we believe that in the future we will see a significant impact of those materials on many water redemiation challenges.

Abstract:Providing clean and affordable water to meet human needs is a grand challenge of the 21st century. Worldwide, water supply struggles to keep up with the fast growing demand, which is exacerbated by population growth, global climate change, and water quality deterioration. The need for technological innovation to enable integrated water management cannot be overstated. Nanotechnology holds great potential in advancing water and wastewater treatment to improve treatment efficiency as well as to augment water supply through safe use of unconventional water sources. Here we review recent development in nanotechnology for water and wastewater treatment. The discussion covers candidate nanomaterials, properties and mechanisms that enable the applications, advantages and limitations as compared to existing processes, and barriers and research needs for commercialization. By tracing these technological advances to the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials, the present review outlines the opportunities and limitations to further capitalize on these unique properties for sustainable water management. Abstract:The application of nanotechnology in drinking water treatment and pollution cleanup is promising, as demonstrated by a number of field-based (pilot and full scale) and bench scale studies. A number of reviews exist for these nanotechnology-based applications; but to better illustrate its importance and guide its development, a direct comparison between traditional treatment technologies and emerging approaches using nanotechnology is needed. In this review, the performances of traditional technologies and nanotechnology for water treatment and environmental remediation were compared with the goal of providing an up-to-date reference on the state of treatment techniques for researchers, industry, and policy makers. Pollutants were categorized into broad classes, and the most cost-effective techniques (traditional and nanotechnology-based) in each category reported in the literature were compared. Where information was available, cost and environmental implications of both technologies were also compared. Case studies were also provided where traditional technologies were directly compared with nanotechnology-based technologies for the similar pollutants. Although nanotechnology-based methods are generally believed to be more expensive, we found instances where they offer cheaper and more effective alternatives to conventional techniques. In addition, nano-based techniques may become extremely important in meeting increasingly stringent water quality standards, especially for removal of emerging pollutants and low levels of contaminants. Background Water pollution is a pressing concern stemming from both natural and anthropogenic activities. The challenges associated with water treatment technologies are adsorption (fouling and corrosion of the adsorbent), flocculation (increased sludge generation and high operation cost), ion exchange (high cost and improper ion removal), chemical precipitation (sludge generation), and membrane technologies (membrane fouling and storage). These technologies have been overstretched and struggle to meet increasingly stringent water quality standards. More recent progress has been made in using nanotechnology for wastewater treatment. Nano-technology offers several advantages over traditional technologies. Many nano-based technologies support reuse, require less space, produce fewer toxic intermediates, and are adaptable to support the emerging concept of decentralized water treatment. An essential aspect of this review is a detailed techno-economic analysis, assessing the long-term viability of nanotechnology-based wastewater treatment methods from an economic standpoint. Methods This review outlines the current state of nanotechnology in wastewater treatment, addressing environmental and economic aspects, challenges, and future potential. Abstract:Nanotechnology holds great promise in advancing affordable mine water treatment and remediation technologies by improving treatment efficiency and performance. Further, it promises to overcome major challenges faced by existing treatment technologies through provision of highly efficient, modular, and multifunctional processes facilitating new treatment capabilities. Such technologies could further allow economic utilization of mine water as a source of commercially viable products. This chapter provides an overview of recent and future developments in nanotechnology that would benefit contemporary mine water treatment regimes, while investigating novel abate approaches possible through the use of nanotechnology. The chapter discusses candidate nanomaterials, their advantages and limitations relative to existing processes, and the unique properties and surface-active mechanisms that enable their adoption in mine water treatment applications.

Abstract:Existing water and wastewater treatment techniques are becoming increasingly difficult to employ due to the discovery of new toxins, the rapid development of population and industrial activities, and the limited quantity of water resources. Treatment of wastewater is a critical need in modern civilization due to a scarcity of water resources and rising industrial activity. Some of the techniques utilized include adsorption, flocculation, filtration, and others, although they are only used for primary wastewater treatment. However, the development and deployment of modern wastewater management with high efficiency and low capitalization are critical in terms of mitigating the environmental consequences of waste. The employment of different nanomaterials in the treatment of wastewater has opened up a world of possibilities for heavy metal and pesticide removal, as well as the treatment of microbes and organic contaminants in wastewater. Nanotechnology is a rapidly evolving technology because of certain nanoparticle's outstanding physiochemical and biological capabilities as contrasted to bulk counterparts. Secondly, it has been established that this is a cost-effective treatment strategy with significant potential in wastewater management, transcending the limitations imposed by currently existing technology. Advances in nanotechnology to reduce water contamination have been presented in this review, including the use of various nanomaterials such as nanocatalysts, nanoadsorbents, and nanomembranes in the treatment of wastewater containing organic contaminants, hazardous metals, and virulent pathogens.

Abstract:Loading of water with multifarious pollutants has dwindled the availability of quality fresh water and put questions on reliability and efficacy of conventional water treatment technologies. Also the quest for developing robust and cost-effective methods with minimum impact on environment had driven the focus of researchers and technologists on new technological developments. Nanotechnology – better referred as Aqua-nanotechnology in this regard provides scientists a new dimension to deal this big problem with small particles having application in 1) water treatment, 2) remediation, and 3) pollution prevention. This chapter will focus on fabrication and use of advance nanomaterials categorized as nanoadsorbents and nanoatalysts for these three main areas. A range of materials exploited in this regard are single and mixed metal oxides and their composites with polymer, clay, carbon based materials etc. while keeping focus on technological developments taken place over the period in regard with treating water and waste water.

Abstract:Water safety concerns are increasing tremendously as a result of the rising population and environmental pollution. As a result, viable water treatment approaches need to be designed to meet the water consumption demands of the population, particularly in developing countries. The recent technological advances in water treatment and purification are well articulated in this review. The efficiency of the materials used for purification and their affordability for people living in rural and remote settlements in various parts of the world have been discussed. Water treatment techniques prior to the rapid advancement of science and technology included a variety of strategies such as coagulation/flocculation, filtration, disinfection, flotation and pH correction. The use of nanotechnology in water treatment and purification has modernized the purification process. Therefore, efficient removal of microbes such as bacteria and viruses are exquisitely accomplished. These technologies may include membrane filtration, ultraviolet irradiation, advanced oxidation ion-exchange and biological filtration technologies. Thus, nanotechnology allows for the fabrication of less expensive systems, allowing even low-income people to benefit from it. Most developing countries find these technologies particularly valuable because access to clean and safe water for drinking and residential needs is critical. This is because access to municipal water supplies is also difficult. Abstract:Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) are widely detected emerging contaminants in water environments and possess high potential risks to human health and aquatic life; however, conventional water treatment processes cannot remove them sufficiently. The boom in nanoscience and nanotechnology offers opportunities to leapfrog on the back of these new technologies to develop innovative techniques in the field of water treatment. The extraordinary properties of nanomaterials, such as large surface area, quantum effect, electrochemical and magnetic properties, and other size-dependent physical and chemical properties, offer nanotechnologies great advantages over conventional technologies. To date, nanomaterials have been extensively applied or investigated in adsorption, photocatalysis, catalytic ozonation and filtration processes and have been shown to have many promising potential application prospects. Among the various nanomaterials, graphene and carbon nanotubes have shown a superior adsorption capacity for the removal of PhACs and possess great potential for modifying photocatalysts; moreover, they can also act as highly efficient catalysts for ozonation. The nano-sized photocatalysts, i.e. nano-TiO2, graphitic carbon nitride, MoS2 nanosheets, and ZnO, generally exhibit higher photocatalytic activity than bulk photocatalysts. The involvement of nanomaterials in a membrane can improve the permeability, selectivity, and anti-fouling properties of the membrane for improved filtration processes. However, some challenges, such as high cost, poor separation performance and environmental risks, are still impeding their engineering application. Aiming to provide readers with a comprehensive insight into the application of nanotechnologies for PhACsu0027 remediation, the current review summarizes the recent advances and breakthroughs made in nanotechnology for PhACsu0027 removal, highlights the modification methods for improving the effectiveness of treatment methods using nanomaterials, and proposes a number of possible further research directions.

Abstract:Regardless of whether pollution originates from inorganic sources such as heavy metals, or organic waste such as industrial discharges; it poses a grave threat toward human health and environmental equilibrium. Air and water quality, soil health, ecosystem integrity—all can suffer negative impacts due to these pollutants with far-reaching effects on both public health and our surroundings. To alleviate this pervasive problem effectively: comprehensive strategies must be implemented that encompass strict regulatory measures; advocate for sustainable industrial practices – promoting environmentally conscious behaviors is also key, and recent decades have seen a marked rise in pollutants in water sources. Human existence depends on having access to clean water, yet numerous sources are now seriously contaminated. Fortunately, using several cutting-edge methods, nanotechnology provides intriguing and useful options for wastewater cleaning. Numerous pollutants, including germs, sediments, and dangerous chemicals like Mercury and Arsenic, may be removed using nanotechnology. The development of wastewater treatment alternatives is being aided by cutting-edge nanotechnology, which has the potential to improve the reuse of water, recycling, and restoration. This not only improves the quality and durability of the water over the long term, but also assures future generations will have access to it. Diverse procedures and strategies are now used in the field of water purification, many of which use nanomaterials. Nanofiltration is a particularly effective and straightforward technique. Low pressure water is used in this method to flow through nanofiltration filters; these filters may be quickly cleaned by simply back-flushing. Utilizing carbon nanotubes, which are recognized for their efficiency in eliminating a wide range of water contaminants because of their incredibly smooth interiors, is another benefit of nanofiltration. When compared to traditional microstructure materials, nanostructured materials, such as Ag (silver), Au (gold), metal oxides, and CNTs (carbon nanotubes), provide several advantages in the purification of water. They are excellent alternatives for tackling the urgent problems caused by water contamination because of their increased surface area and exceptional qualities. In conclusion, the use of nanomaterials in water filtration, such as Ag, Au, metal oxides, and CNTs, marks a huge step towards protecting our planet's most valuable resource. We can create a sustainable future where everyone has access to clean, secure drinking water by using the potential of nanotechnology.

Abstract:Engineered nanomaterials (ENM) are manufactured, as opposed to being an incidental by-product of combustion or a natural process, and they often have unique or novel properties that emerge from their small size. These materials are being used in an expanding array of consumer products and, like all technological developments, have both benefits and risks. As the use of ENM in consumer products becomes more common, the amount of these nanomaterials entering wastewater stream increases. Estimates of nanomaterials production are in the range of 500 and 50,000 tons per year for silver and titanium dioxide (TiO2) alone, respectively. Nanomaterials enter the wastewater stream during the production, usage, and disposal of nanomaterial-containing products. The predicted values of nanomaterials range from 0.003 (fullerenes) to 21 ng L−1 (nano-TiO2) for surface waters, and from 4 ng L−1 (fullerenes) to 4 μg L−1 (nano-TiO2) for sewage treatment effluents. Therefore, investigating the fate of nanomaterials in wastewater streams is critical for risk assessment and pollution control. The authors aim first to identify the sources of nanomaterials reaching wastewater streams, then determine their occurrence and distribution, and finally discuss their fate in relation to human and ecological health, and environmental impact.

Abstract:Water pollution caused by a variety of organic and inorganic contaminants is becoming a major source of concern all over the world because of global warming. Furthermore, man-made activities like as product manufacturing have aggravated the situation even further. In recent years, nanotechnology has begun to examine a variety of practical methods for the precise treatment of a contaminated or polluted object in accurate manner. This has been made possible using various nanomaterials. When it comes to wastewater treatment, nanotechnology is emerging as a promising technology that has demonstrated remarkable feats in a variety of fields. In terms of surface to volume ratio, adsorption capacity, reactivity and sensitivity of nanomaterials excel in wastewater treatment because these low-cost materials are easy to functionalize. For the purposes of this review, we focused on nanotechnology-based wastewater treatment options, such as adsorption and biosorption, nanofiltration, photocatalytic disinfection, and sensing technologies, among other things. When all these criteria are taken into consideration, nanotechnology has proven to be an innovative, ecologically friendly, and effective. The major hurdle to the widespread use of nanotechnology is the scale. Most research has just been conducted on a laboratory or pilot scale up to date. In this paper, we have briefly discussed a few recently developed nanomaterials that are now being employed in water treatment, with a particular emphasis on nano-based adsorbents and filtering membranes.

Abstract:As the technological benefits of nanotechnology begin to rapidly move from laboratory to large-scale industrial application, release of nanomaterials to the environment including water, soil, sediment, and biosolids is inevitable. Concerns have been raised that the special properties of nanostructured materials that make them so attractive could potentially lead to unforeseen health risk or environmental hazards. The progress on the sources of nanoparticles, physicochemical properties and environmental or health risk is critically reviewed in this work. The environmental behavior of nanoparticles is analyzed when they are released into the aqueous environment. Toxicological effects of typical nanoparticles on bacteria, aquatic organisms, soil animals and mammalian cells are summarized. The possible toxicological mechanisms on these model microbes are then discussed. Furthermore, the relationships between toxicological effects of nanoparticles on model microbe and self-physicochemical/environmental factors are critically analyzed. The challenges and existing problems of nanotoxicity research are listed. Moreover, we also highlight the future research fields (such as quantitative structure activity relationship, QSAR) need regarding nanoparticles in the environment. It has been point out that more studies are urgently needed to scrutinize the characteristic methods of nanoscale materials and long-term research on the behavior and toxicity of nanoparticles in microbial community.

Abstract:Water is a vital component of our existence. Many human activities, such as improper waste disposal from households, industries, hospitals, and synthetic processes, are major contributors to the contamination of water streams. It is the responsibility of every individual to safeguard water resources and reduce pollution. Among the various available wastewater treatment (WWT) methods, smart nanomaterials stand out for their effectiveness in pollutant removal through absorption and adsorption. This paper examines the application of valuable smart nanomaterials in treating wastewater. Various nanomaterials, including cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), nanoadsorbents, nanometals, nanofilters, nanocatalysts, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanosilver, nanotitanium dioxide, magnetic nanoparticles, nanozero-valent metallic nanoparticles, nanocomposites, nanofibers, and quantum dots, are identified as promising candidates for WWT. These smart nanomaterials efficiently eliminate toxic substances, microplastics, nanoplastics, and polythene particulates from wastewater. Additionally, the paper discusses comparative studies on the purification efficiency of nanoscience technology versus conventional methods.
