Abstract:Here we report the fabrication of graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes covalently combined with bovine serum albumin (BSA) for metal ions detection. In this system, BSA acts as a transporter protein in the membrane and endows the membrane with selective recognition of Co-2(+), Cu2+, AuCl4-, and Fe2+. Combining the metal-binding ability of BSA and the large surface area of GO, the hybrid membrane can be used as a water purification strategy to selectively absorb a large amount of AuCl4- from HAuCl(4 )solution. Moreover, BSA could reduce the membrane-immobilized AuCl(4)(- )by adding sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Interestingly, adsorption experiments on three kinds of metal ions showed that the GO-BSA membrane had good selective adsorption of Co2+ compared with Cu2+ and Fe2+.The morphology and composition changes of the membrane were observed with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. It is expected that this facile strategy for fabricating large-scale graphene-biomolecule membranes will spark inspirations in the development of functional nanomaterials and wastewater purification.
A Novel Lateral Flow Strip Based on DNA-Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles for On-site Detection of Mercury (II) Ions

Abstract:Mercury pollution in aquatic environment is becoming increasingly serious, which poses a threat to the ecological environment and human health. Traditional methods are costly and time consuming since they require sophisticated instruments and professional operation. Thus simple and on-site detection of mercury (II) ions (Hg2+) is extremely expected. In this study, we constructed a one-step lateral flow strip that can selectively detect Hg2+ in solution based on the thymine-Hg2+-thymidine (T-Hg2+-T) mismatch principle. Detect probe (poly T20) were designed to bind to compete probe (poly A20) which can compete with Hg2+ to bind detect probe, leading to the color change on the test line. Moreover, a home-made bionic E-eye system was developed as a portable in-situ detection platform to efficiently measure the Hg2+ in 10 minutes by direct photographing. Under optimized experimental conditions, the developed lateral flow strip had a detection limit of 2 ppb and could detect up to 400ppb.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic nanoparticles, which can improve and modify the mechanical and chemical properties of polymers, have been used as fillers to prepare high-performance hybrid nanocomposite membranes. In this study, we explored whether the incorporation of organic nanofillers (graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or oxidized carbon nanotubes (CNTOxi)) into polysulfone (PSF) and montmorillonite (MMt)-modified PSF membranes could enhance membrane performance for the removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated solutions. These hybrid membranes were prepared by a phase inversion method using chloroform as the solvent. The surface morphologies of the membranes revealed good dispersibility of the organoclay and carbon nanomaterials in the PSF matrix. The hybrid nanocomposite membranes showed significantly improved thermal stability and mechanical properties as compared to the pristine PSF and PSF/MMt membranes. The adsorption efficiencies of these hybrid adsorptive membranes for Hg(II), Pb(II), Sr(II), Fe(III), Zn(II), Ni(II), Al(III), Co(II), Y(III), and Cr(III) were investigated. The PSF/MMt/CNTOxi and PSF/MMt/GO membranes exhibited the highest adsorption efficiencies. In particular, these adsorptive membranes showed selectivity toward Hg(II), and the Hg(II) extraction percentage was maximized at pH 2. The maximum Hg(II) adsorption capacities of PSF/MMt/CNTOxi and PSF/MMt/GO were 151.36 and 144.89 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption isotherm was in approval with the Langmuir model. These hybrid nanocomposites can be used in water purification application.

Abstract:We developed a highly sensitive solid-state sensor for mercury detection by stabilizing red-sub-nanometric fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNC, 0.9 ± 0.1 nm diameter) with bovine serum albumin in a matrix composed of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) (BSA-AuNC/CNF). The main morphological and optical features of the system were investigated via atomic force/transmission electron microscopy and UV-Vis/fluorescence spectroscopy. The hybrid film (off-white and highly transparent) showed strong photoluminescene under UV irradiation. The latter is assigned to the AuNC, which also increase the ductility of the emitting film, which was demonstrated for high sensitivity Hg2+ detection. When used as a sensor system, following AuNC printing on CNF hybrid films, a limit of detection <10 nM was confirmed. What is more, nanocellulose films have a high pore structure and selective separation properties, showcasing a wide range of potential applications in many fields such as water treatment and oil–water separation.

Abstract:We describe a method for the preparation of water-soluble gold nanoclusters (Au-NCs) from chloroauric acid using denatured-casein as both a reducing and stabilizing agent. The resulting Au-NCs were characterized by photoluminescence, UV–vis absorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, and by transmission electron microscopy. The Au-NCs have an average diameter of 1.7 ± 0.2 nm and exhibit orange-red fluorescence emission peaking at 600 nm (with a Stokes’ shift as large as 237 nm), a quantum yield of 4.3 %, and good stability over the physiologically relevant range of pH values and ionic strength. Cytotoxicity studies showed the Au-NCs to display negligible effects in terms of altering cell proliferation or triggering apoptosis. Fluorescence imaging of HeLa cancer cells was accomplished by loading such cells with the Au-NCs. The fluorescence of the Au-NCs is found to be strongly quenched by Hg(II) ions, and thus the Au-NCs can be used for detecting and, possibly, imaging of Hg(II). An assay was worked out for the determination of Hg(II), and its limit of detection is 1.83 nM, which is 5.5 times lower than the maximum allowed concentration of Hg(II) in drinking water as defined by the US EPA.

Abstract:A multiple signal amplification strategy was designed for an ultrasensitive competitive immunoassay for Hg2+. This strategy was achieved using graphene conjugated with a large number of CdSe quantum dots to enhance the basal signal and enormous horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labeled with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to consume the coreactant H2O2 generated in situ. The immunosensor was constructed by immobilization of coating antigen on poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) graphene CdSe composites (PDDA-GN-CdSe), and a strong electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal was obtained. When the immunosensor was immersed in antibody AuNPs HRP composites, the ECL signal greatly decreased, which was ascribed to the bound enzyme on the electrode surface. The self-produced coreactant H2O2 was consumed by o-phenylenediamine in the presence of enzyme, effectively decreasing the ECL intensity from the quantum dots. The Hg2+ in solution and the corresponding coating antigen competed for the limited antibody, and thus, the ECL intensity was linearly dependent on the logarithm of the mercury(II) concentration from 0.2 to 1000 ng mL(-1) with a detection limit of 0.06 ng mL(-1). The immunoassay exhibited good stability and accuracy and acceptable reproducibility, indicating that it provides a promising approach for the detection of trace mercury and other small molecular compounds in environmental samples.

Abstract:Blot-based technology is widely used in biomedical research, serving as a remarkably efficient platform for biomolecule recognition and detection. In this report, highly fluorescent gold nanoclusters have been synthesized under mild conditions by using a proteolytic enzyme, α-chymotrypsin A (CTRA), as both the stabilizing and reducing agents. The synthesized AuNCs@CTRA was characterized by various techniques including UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and TEM. The fluorescent AuNCs@CTRA is fairly stable and responsive to mercury ions with high selectivity and sensitivity. These protein capped nanoclusters were electrophoresed on an SDS-PAGE gel and transferred to a cellulose membrane. Mercury ions can specifically quench the red fluorescent AuNCs@CTRA band and selectively stop the green band formation on the membrane through inhibition of the peroxidase mimic activity of AuNCs@CTRA toward the 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) substrate in a concentration dependent manner. Therefore, using a blot-technology based system, we demonstrated the operation of the AuNCs@CTRA–cellulose hybrid material for mercury ion visual sensing that can be dually read out under UV light (fluorometric) and the naked eye (colorimetric). This approach also has potential for use in other blot-technology based applications.
Plasmonic Gold Nanoparticles Stain Hydrogels for the Portable and High-Throughput Monitoring of Mercury Ions

Abstract:The hybrid of l-cysteine and agarose can reduce HAuCl4 and support the rapid growth of plasmonic gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in the hydrogel phase. The l-cysteine-doped agarose hydrogel (C-AGH) not only offers the substrate the capacity to reduce Au(III) ions but also stabilizes and precisely modulates the in situ grown Au NPs with high repeatability, easy operation, and anti-interference performance. Herein, before the incubation of HAuCl4, the improved hydrogel is preincubated in the aqueous solution containing mercury ions, and the cysteine can specifically conjugate with mercury via the thiol groups. Subsequently, the responsive allochroic bands from dark blue to red can be identified in the solid hydrogel after the incubation of HAuCl4, which is attributed to the formation of regulated Au-Hg nanoamalgams. As a proof-of-concept, toxic Hg2+ ions are exploited as targets for constructing novel sensing assays based on the improved C-AGH protocol. Based on naked-eye recognition, Hg2+ could be rapidly and simply measured. Additionally, the high-throughput and trace analysis with a low limit of detection (3.7 nM) is performed using a microplate reader. On the basis of the filtering technique and remodeling of hydrogels, C-AGH working as the filtering membrane can even achieve the integration of enrichment and measurement with enhanced sensitivity. Significantly, the strategy of using an allochroic hydrogel with the staining of Au NPs can promote the rapid and primary assessment of water quality in environmental analysis.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions (HMI), a non-degradable toxic substance, has raised widespread concerns in water purification. Membrane separation is a considerable and promising technology for removing HMIs from water, due to its environmentally friendly, clean and highly effective. This study reported a functional composite ultrafiltration membrane prepared from natural biomolecules ε-Poly-L-lysine hydrochloride (PLL), sodium lingo sulfonate (SLS) or sodium alginate (SA) based on the combination strategy of chemical graft and layer-by-layer assembly. The fabricated membrane exhibited a high pure water flux (2957 L·m −2 ·h −1 ), high capture efficiency for Cu 2+ (99.1 %) and Pb 2+ (98.9 %). Notably, the layer-by-layer assembly strategy provides abundant groups for HMI binding, ensuring the high capture efficiency. The fabricated membrane demonstrated a low flux decline (9 %), along with a high flux recovery ratio (99.2 %). Moreover, it exhibited exceptional stability and reusability across a wide pH range (pH 5–9), meanwhile maintaining a capture efficiency of approximately 99 % under near-neutral condition after undergoing 5 cycle experiments for both Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ . Our work builds a straightforward approach for UF membrane fabricating with excellent HMI capture capacity, displaying the potential application in HMI waste water purification.

Abstract:We have developed an efficient strategy for synthesizing a strongly coupled Au/Fe3O4/GO hybrid material to improve the catalytic activity, stability, and separation capability of Au nanoparticles (NPs) and Hg(2+). The hybrid material can be synthesized by the direct anchoring of Au and Fe3O4 NPs on the functional groups of GO. This approach affords strong chemical attachments between the NPs and GO, allowing this hybrid material to ultrasensitively detect Hg(2+) in aqueous solutions with a detection limit as low as 0.15 nM. In addition, the deposition of Hg(0) on the surface of Au/Fe3O4/GO could be quickly (within 30 min) and efficiently (>99% elimination efficiency) removed by the simple application of an external magnetic field and then Au/Fe3O4/GO could be subsequently reused at least 15 times, with the elimination efficiency remaining high (>96%).

Abstract:Mercury species have aroused wide concern in the past several decades due to their high toxicity. However, it is still difficult to detect ultra-trace mercury species due to their biochemical transformation in complex samples. To establish a simpler and more sensitive method for pre-concentration and determination of trace mercury species, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets with sulfur-rich characteristics and enlarged interlayer spacing were prepared by a hydrothermal method coupled with a sonication-assisted liquid exfoliation method and acted as solid-phase extraction adsorbent. The nano-MoS2 had high adsorption capacity, fast adsorption rate and excellent selectivity towards mercury ions (Hg2+), methyl mercury (MeHg+) and ethyl mercury (EtHg+) in a wide pH range and complex matrices. And it could be easily regenerated by 4 mol L-1 HCl and reused several times. After optimizing HPLC-UV-HG-AFS conditions, a great linearity (1.0-10.0 g L-1, R-2 = 0.999 for Hg2+, MeHg+ and EtHg+), lower detection limits (0.017, 0.037 and 0.021 ng mL(-1) for Hg2+, MeHg+ and EtHg+, respectively), relative standard deviations (<5%) and addition recoveries of the samples within 82.75-113.38% were observed. In summary, trace inorganic and organic mercury species in environmental and biological samples could be selectively enriched by the prepared nano-MoS2 and efficiently seperated and detected by HPLC-UV-HG-AFS. The present study will help provide a better strategy for environmental monitoring and health assessment of mercury pollutants.
Surface engineered bimetallic gold/silver nanoclusters for in situ imaging of mercury ions in living organisms

Abstract:Chemical sensing for the sensitive and reliable detection of mercury(II) ions (Hg2+) is of great importance in environmental protection, food safety, and biomedical applications. Due to the bio-enrichment property of Hg2+ in organisms, it is particularly meaningful to develop an effective tool that can in situ and rapidly monitor the level of Hg2+ in living organisms. In this work, we report ligand functionalized gold-silver bimetallic nanoclusters with bright red fluorescence as intracellular probes for imaging Hg2+ in living cells and zebrafish. The bimetallic nanoclusters of DTT-GSH@Au/AgNCs (DG-Au/AgNCs) with strong fluorescence that benefited from the synergistic effect of Au and Ag atoms were obtained through a one-pot synthesis method, incorporating glutathione (GSH) and dithiothreitol (DTT) as the reducers and functionalized ligands. Attractively, the bright red fluorescence of DG-Au/AgNCs could be rapidly and selectively quenched by Hg2+ within 1 min with a very low detection limit of 1.01 nM. Additionally, DG-Au/AgNCs had a great advantage in the detection of Hg2+ in living cells and zebrafish owing to its notably strong red fluorescence at 665 nm, which could avoid effectively auto-fluorescence interference from the organism. Such easily prepared bimetallic fluorescent nanoclusters would be expected to provide a noninvasive and sensitive approach in the detection of heavy metals in situ for environmental protection.
Thermally Reduced Graphene Oxide Membranes Revealed Selective Adsorption of Gold Ions from Mixed Ionic Solutions

Abstract:The recovery of gold from water is an important research area. Recent reports have highlighted the ultrahigh capacity and selective extraction of gold from electronic waste using reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Here, we made a further attempt with the thermal rGO membranes and found that the thermal rGO membranes also had a similarly high adsorption efficiency (1.79 g gold per gram of rGO membranes at 1000 ppm). Furthermore, we paid special attention to the detailed selectivity between Au3+ and other ions by rGO membranes. The maximum adsorption capacity for Au3+ ions was about 16 times that of Cu2+ ions and 10 times that of Fe3+ ions in a mixture solution with equal proportions of Au3+/Cu2+ and Au3+/Fe3+. In a mixed-ion solution containing Au3+:Cu2+:Na+:Fe3+:Mg2+ of printed circuit board (PCB), the mass of Au3+:Cu2+:Na+:Fe3+:Mg2+ in rGO membranes is four orders of magnitude higher than the initial mass ratio. A theoretical analysis indicates that this selectivity may be attributed to the difference in the adsorption energy between the metal ions and the rGO membrane. The results are conducive to the usage of rGO membranes as adsorbents for Au capture from secondary metal resources in the industrial sector.

Abstract:Sensing Hg 2+ is significant to protecting human health and environmental ecosystems, for its toxicity and genotoxicity. Here, highly stable fluorescent folic acid (FA)-protected Au nanoclusters (FA-AuNCs) were synthesized by optimizing the reactive parameters with high quantum yield of 34.7%. Main components of Au 4 L were confirmed by MALDI-TOF, and the electron-rich residues of FA shell enabled FA-AuNCs excellent photostability. FA-AuNCs exhibited sensitive response behavior to Hg 2+ with a minimum detectability of 1.3 nM, and presented extreme effect to the detection of Hg 2+ in real water. Notably, the cellular imaging and in-situ detection of Hg 2+ in cells can be achieved visually. The high selectivity was attributed to the chemical bond formed between Au + (4f 14 5d 10 ) and Hg 2+ (4f 14 5d 10 ). And the internal filter effect and static quenching effect were proved triggering the quenching of FA-AuNCs. The ultra-stable FA-AuNCs provide a potential promising opportunity for the in-situ tracing Hg 2+ from environmental and biological samples.

Abstract:In practice, efficient, rapid and simple removal of Hg(II) from water using nano adsorbents remains an extreme challenge at present. In this work, a novel Hg(II) adsorbent based on functionalized graphdiyne oxide (GDYO-3M) membrane was designed for the purpose of effective and prompt removal of Hg(II) from environmental water for the first time. Through filtration, the proposed GDYO-3M membrane (4 cm diameter size) fulfilled an exceeding 97% removal efficiency in > 10 L water containing 0.1 mg/L Hg(II) within 1 h. Due to the presence of -SH groups, the GDYO-3M membrane demonstrates an excellent selectivity for Hg(II) vs. 14 co-existing metal ions. In the meantime, the GDYO-3M membrane represents a favorable reproducibility (above 95% Hg(II) removal) after 9 successive adsorption-desorption cycles. For the mechanism, it is believed that the active sites in the adsorption process mainly include -SH groups, oxygen-containing functional groups, and alkyne bonds. Further, the GDYO-3M membrane can be utilized as an enrichment approach for sensitive analysis of Hg(II) in water based on energy dispersion X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (ED-XRF), whose detection limit (LOD) reaches 0.2 μg/L within 15 min. This work not only provides a green and efficient method for removing Hg(II), but also renders an approach for rapid, sensitive and portable Hg(II) detection in water.

Plasma-assisted in-situ preparation of graphene-Ag nanofiltration membranes for efficient removal of heavy metal ions

Abstract:Graphene-based membranes have been considered as promising separation membranes for water treatments due to their unique two-dimensional confined channels. However, subject to the preparation technology, the effective construction of graphene-based filtration membranes with suitable separation ability on heavy metal ions still face considerable challenges. Herein, we have successfully constructed a kind of graphene-based (reduced graphene oxide, rGO) nanofiltration membranes by adopting a plasma-assisted in-situ photocatalytic reduction method. Graphene oxide-Ag (GO-Ag) composite sheets are prepared firstly and then assembled into membranes by vacuum filtration. With the use of Ag nanoparticles as plasmonic photocatalyst, GO-Ag films can be in-situ reduced, leading to the formation of rGO-based composite membranes. Thanks to the mild in-situ reduction process, the filtration ability on heavy metal ions (Cr(VI), Cr3+, Cu2+ and Pb2+) caused by lamellar structure is well retained in the as-formed rGO-Ag membranes. Especially, when treating the typical toxic Cr(VI) solution, the retention capacity, water flux and stability of rGO-Ag membranes are all improved compared with that of the original GO-Ag ones. In addition, the effectively rejection of Cr(VI) from mixed solutions containing both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) also suggests the good applicability of such rGO-Ag membranes in a complex wastewater system.

Nanomolar Hg2+ Detection Using Beta-Lactoglobulin-Stabilized Fluorescent Gold Nanoclusters In Beverage And Biological Media

Abstract:Owing to diverse functionalities and metal binding abilities, proteins have been proven to be promising ligands in the synthesis of gold nanoclusters (Au NCs). In this work, we explored beta-lactoglobnlin (beta-Lg), a protein byproduct generated during cheese processing, as a biotemplate for fabrication of Au NCs by a facile and green method for the first time. The as-prepared Au NCs are water soluble and highly fluorescent and exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity for Hg2+ detection in aqueous solution. Interestingly, we found that the fluorescence of these Au NCs is stable either in a variety of complex matrixes or over a broad pH range (5.0-13.9) and; therefore can be explored as a cell and animal imaging agent. More importantly, we demonstrated that the beta-lactoglobulin-stabilized Au NCs (beta-Lg-Au NCs) could serve as a sensor for the detection and quantification of Hg2+ in beverages, urine, and serum with high sensitivity.
An Ultrasensitive Gold Nanoband Aptasensor for Mercury(II) Detection in Aquatic Environment

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in aquatic environment has made great adverse impacts on human health and environment. In this work, a label-free electrochemical gold nanoband aptasensor (GNA) was developed using thymine-Hg2+-thymine (T-Hg2+-T) coordination chemistry for Hg2+ detection in drinking water. The gold nanoband sensor contains gold nanoband working electrode with a band thickness of 100 nm. The nanoscale working electrode increases the mass transfer rate and sensitivity for Hg2+ detection. Moreover, the gold nanoband sensors are cost-effective and can be easily regenerated by cutting the edge after the performance decreases dramatically compared with microelectrodes and disk electrodes. T-rich oligonucleotides modified with thiol group was self-assembled onto the working electrode through Au-S covalent bonding. In the presence of Hg2+, oligonucleotides will capture Hg2+, thus inducing the conformational change from single-strand to duplex-like structure that would promote electron transfer. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to detect the Hg2+-mediated conformational changes. By optimizing experimental conditions, the linear range of proposed biosensor is from 0.1 nM to 1 mu M, and the limit of detection is 40 pM (8 ppt). Furthermore, this nanobiosensors exhibited high selectivity and a great potential to detect trace Hg2+ in real samples from aquatic environment. (C) 2019 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:Fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) were synthesized using a drug target bacterial enoyl-ACP reductase (FabI) as a template. The physical and chemical properties of the AuNCs were studied by UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and TEM. The AuNCs-FabI conjugate was prepared by in situ reduction of tetrachloroaurate in the presence of FabI. The conjugated particles were loaded onto nylon membranes by taking advantage of the electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged AuNCs@FabI and the nylon film which is positively charged at pH 7.4. This results in the formation of a test stripe with sensor spots that can be used to detect Hg(II) ion in the 1 nM to 10 μM concentration range. The test stripes are simple, convenient, selective, sensitive, and can be quickly read out with bare eyes after illumination with a UV lamp.
