Abstract:Trimethoprim is a pollutant ubiquitous in the environment due to its extensive application, and it cannot be effectively removed by conventional wastewater treatment processes. In this study, the Fenton and the Fe(II)-activated persulfate processes were employed to degrade trimethoprim in an aqueous solution. The results showed that the concentration of persulfate, H2O2 and Fe(II) a had significant influence on the degradation of trimethoprim in both processes. De-ionized water spiked with trimethoprim resulted in the complete degradation of trimethoprim (0.05 mM) by the mineralization of 54.9% of Fenton's reagent when the concentrations of H2O2 and Fe(II) were 1 mM and 0.05 mM, respectively. In contrast, 73.4% of trimethoprim was degraded by the mineralization of 40.5% of the Fe(II)-activated persulfate process when the concentration of persulfate and Fe(II) were each 4 mM. Intermediate compounds with different m/z were detected for the Fenton and the Fe(II)-activated persulfate processes, indicating alternative degradation pathways. In the actual wastewater spiked with trimethoprim, the removal efficiency of trimethoprim decreased to 35.8% and 43.6%, respectively, for the Fenton and the Fe(II)-activated persulfate processes. In addition, the decomposition efficiencies for hydrogen peroxide and persulfate were 43.8% and 92.5%, respectively, which was lower than those in the de-ionized water system. These results demonstrated that wastewater components had a negative influence on trimethoprim degradation and the decomposition of the oxidants (persulfate and H2O2). In summary, the Fe(II)-activated persulfate process could be used as an alternative technology for treating trimethoprim-containing wastewater.

Abstract:In this paper, Fe3O4-Mn3O4/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) hybrid was synthesized through polyol process and impregnation method and used as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) in aqueous solution. The hybrid catalyst had higher catalytic efficiency compared with Fe3O4-Mn3O4 and Mn3O4 as catalyst for degradation of SMT. The effects of pH value, H2O2 concentration, catalyst dosage, initial SMT concentration and temperature on SMT degradation were investigated. The removal efficiency of SMT was about 98% at following optimal conditions: pH=3, T=35°C, Fe3O4/Mn3O4-RGO composites=0.5g/L, H2O2=6mM. The inhibitor experiments indicated that the main active species was hydroxyl radicals (·OH) on catalyst surface. At last, the possible catalytic mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:In soils, the Fenton-like reaction can be initiated when phenolic acids (PCs) existed simultaneously with iron oxides and dissolved O2, which would have great impact on transformation of organic pollutants. This study probed the mechanism of the Fenton-like reaction that occurs in a heterogeneous system containing ferrihydrite (Fh) and gallic acid (GA), and evaluated its performance in sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. In the absence of dissolved O2, only reductive dissolution of Fh by GA occurred. It was further showed that Fh is capable of catalyzing the oxidation of GA by O2, in which the Fenton-like reaction was involved with the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (semiquinone free radicals, superoxide, singlet oxygen, hydroxyl radical and H2O2) together with the adsorbed and aqueous Fe(II). At pH 4.0, this Fenton-like reaction could lead to SMX degradation at a rate of 38.2% and 65.6% when GA concentration were set at 0.1 and 0.2 mM, respectively. Elevating pH inhibited SMX degradation process. Citric acid had no effect on SMX degradation, while ascorbic acid showed a promotive effect. Moreover, HPLC-MS showed the presence of 12 intermediate products, and the proposed pathways for SMX degradation included cleavage, demethylation, oxidation and electrophilic substitution. This work could enhance our understanding on how the abiotic soil Fenton-like reaction controls the fate of SMX in soil environments.

Abstract:The kinetics and catalytic mechanism of sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation using Fe3O4/Mn3O4 nanocomposite as catalysts in heterogeneous Fenton-like process were investigated. The degradation process of SMT conformed to first-order kinetic model. The apparent activation energy (Ea) of the process was calculated to be 40.5 kJ/mol. The reusability and stability of the catalysts were evaluated based on the results of the successive batch experiments. The intermediates were identified and quantified by ion chromatography (IC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results suggested that the bonds of S–C, N–C, and S–N were broken mainly by ·OH attack to form the organic compounds, which were gradually decomposed into small-molecule organic acids, such as oxalic acid, propionic acid, and formic acid. The possible catalytic mechanism for SMT degradation was tentatively proposed.

Enhancement in Sulfamethoxazole Degradation Via Efficient Heterogeneous Activation of Peracetic Acid by FeS

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA) has attracted increasing attention in wastewater decontamination for yielding reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, mackinawite (FeS) was synthesized and applied as the heterogeneous catalyst for PAA activation. Using sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the target pollutant, the influences of FeS dosage, PAA dosage and initial pH values on SMX degradation by the FeS/PAA process were investigated. Under optimal conditions, SMX could be completely removed within 5 min with the apparent first-order rate constant (kobs) of 7.71 × 10−4 s−1. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) analysis and radical scavenging experiments were modulated to detect the active species. During the activation process of PAA, various active components were evidenced to be hydroxyl radicals (HO•), singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide radicals (O2•−) and organic radicals (R-O•, e.g., CH3C(O)O• and CH3C(O)OO•), whereas HO• and R-O• were demonstrated as the dominant active species responsible for SMX abatement. Both dissolved Fe(II) ions and active sites on the surface of FeS were proven to be activators for PAA, and SMX abatement was highly promoted as a result. Furthermore, the acidic pH displayed superior efficiency in SMX decomposition compared with alkaline and neutral conditions. Five degradation pathways of SMX were put forward and the toxicity of byproducts was further evaluated. Overall, this study provided an efficient and environmentally friendly PAA activation approach using FeS, which might broaden its applicability in the remediation of micropollutants.

Abstract:Sulfonamides are an important class of synthetic antibacterial medications that is widely utilized and pollute many water bodies. In this study, sulfamethoxazole was selected as the representative of sulfa antibiotics. A molybdenum disulfide-based catalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal method and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole in water. Co@MoS 2 was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The experimental conditions, Cobalt ion concentration, and light effect have been investigated. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was used to measure the concentration of sulfamethoxazole. The results showed that the Co@MoS 2 /PMS experimental conditions could effectively degrade sulfamethoxazole wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, empirical kinetics, response surface method (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were employed to model and optimize electrochemically activated persulfate process. Electrochemically activated persulfate using a sacrificial iron anode was used as a cost effective method to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in aqueous solution. The individual and the interactive effects of operation parameters such as pH, applied current, persulfate concentration and electrolysis time were investigated. Eight unseen experiments beyond the experimental design were performed to test the accuracy of the generalization ability of the models. Based on the unseen experiments, ANN demonstrated the superiority in predicting the results when compared to empirical kinetics and RSM modeling. Response surface analysis was used to illustrate the interactions between parameters pH/applied current, pH/persulfate concentration and pH/electrolysis time. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the relative importance of the influencing parameters were of the following order: electrolysis time > pH > applied current > persulfate concentration. The highest degradation efficiency was achieved with the optimal conditions of pH of 3.43, the applied current of 18.4 mA, the persulfate concentration of 3.54 mM, and the electrolysis time of 60 min. The electrical energy consumption was also calculated at this optimized condition (0.04 kWh ⋅ m−1order−1). The work provides a novel predictive and optimized model for SMX removal under different conditions by electrochemically activated persulfate.
Degradation of sulfamethazine antibiotics in Fenton‐like system using Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles as catalyst

Abstract:In this study, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized, characterized and used for the degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT). The results showed that Fe3O4 MNPs were efficient and reusable heterogeneous catalytic for SMT degradation in a Fenton-like system. More than 80% of the SMT was degraded under optimal conditions: initial pH of 3.0, 20 mM of H2O2, Fe3O4 MNPs dose of 1.0 g/L, and initial concentration of SMT 20 mg/L (initial total organic carbon: 10.4 mg/L). Among the parameters that affect SMT degradation, initial pH is of crucial importance to degrade SMT in the Fenton-like system. A possible pathway of SMT degradation was proposed based on detected products in the solution. The Fe3O4 MNPs exhibited high stability and reusability. The SMT removal remained at 80% over five runs with the catalyst. Slight agglomeration and dissolution of Fe3O4 MNPs after reactions were observed by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis. The SMT removal and mineralization could be enhanced using Fe3O4 MNPs/powder-activated carbon (PAC) composite as catalyst. The removal efficiency of SMT and TOC increased to 94.7% and 80.8% in optimal conditions, respectively, in Fenton-like system catalyzed by Fe3O4 MNPs/PAC composite. Abstract:In this study, the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics was investigated through persulfate-enhanced UV advanced oxidation process. Factors that may affect the degradation efficiency were analyzed. Results showed that the persulfate imposed a significant enhancement on the UV oxidation process during the sulfathiazole degradation. The combined process of UV/persulfate can effectively remove about 96% of sulfathiazole within 60 min. With the increase in the dosage of persulfate, the removal efficiency increased as well. Different water matrix almost had no effect on the removal efficiency. Two intermediates were found during the sulfathiazole degradation. It can be predicted that the combined process of UV/persulfate has a broad application prospect for removing sulfonamide antibiotics in water treatment.

Abstract:The occurrence of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in water is of concern due to their hazardous effect on the environment. Such micropollutants deteriorate environmental quality and can induce antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria. Thus, removal of these emerging contaminants is a necessity and thus requires a clear understanding of the effective treatment and mechanistic approach utilized in degradation and removal. Frequently, treatment systems are optimized for the removal of contaminants while the formation of transformation products and their removal are not targeted. We utilized our established iron powder catalyzed Fe (0) Fenton Oxidation treatment to study the degradation of emerging contaminants — sulfamethoxazole, gabapentin, diuron, and triazine class pesticides. We used state-of-the-art mass spectrometry to establish the common oxidative mechanistic approach after identifying the transformation products formed during the Fe (0) Fenton Oxidation processes. Fenton transformed product was produced after 60 min reaction time when treatment was initiated after adding the optimized H2O2 and iron powder Fe (0)) in a micropollutant solution adjusted to pH 5. About 5-to-7 transformed products of each micropollutant were identified and predicted to have low toxicity risk to aquatic organisms. The oxidative degradation pathway of micropollutants illustrates the shared oxidative mechanism where the aliphatic chain of the heteroatom: Sulphur (R—S—R as thiosulphate), functional groups (R—C=O, R—COOR, R—NH2, R— NH=O—N) and alkyl chain present in the target compound was suggested as the prime region of hydroxyl radicle (•OH) attack. The tandem mass spectrometry estimated the evolution of sulfamethoxazole-transformed product formation and removal during the treatment. The informed optimization of Fe (0) Fenton treatment, confirmed through MS2 was established at 40 min reaction time at which both the sulfamethoxazole and its transformed product were reduced to trace levels (ngL-1).

Abstract:Sulfamethazine (SMT) is a ubiquitous pollutant due to its extensive application, and it cannot be effectively removed by conventional wastewater treatment processes. In this study, a magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles immobilized on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Fe3O4/MWCNTs) composites were synthesized, characterized and used as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts for SMT degradation. The MWCNTs scaffold with large surface area and good adsorption capacity can improve Fe3O4 dispersibility and facilitate pollutant adsorption. The Fe3O4/MWCNTs exhibited enhanced catalytic activity for SMT degradation. The effects of initial pH, H2O2 dosage, catalyst dosage, initial SMT concentrations and temperature on SMT degradation were investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of SMT and total organic carbon was 98.3% and 59.7%, respectively, under optimal reaction conditions. The Fe3O4/MWCNTs also showed stable catalytic activity, reusability and easy recycling. Furthermore, the main oxidation products of SMT degradation and the primary active radical were identified, and the possible catalytic mechanism was tentatively proposed.
Acceleration of Fe III /Fe II cycle enhanced by Pd/MOF‐808(Zr) composite in hydrogen promotion Fenton system for sulfamethazine elimination

Abstract:Under normal temperature and pressure, a novel improved Fenton system that was named MHACF‐MOF‐808(Zr) was constructed after the introduction of Pd/MOF‐808(Zr) and H2 to solve the inherent problem of the production of iron sludge in the classic Fenton system. Only trace amount of FeII was required during the whole reaction because FeIII could be rapidly reduced by the active hydrogen derived from the adsorption and activation of H2 on the surface of Pd/MOF‐808(Zr) composite. The concentration of FeII could be maintained more than 10 μM. The removal of target pollutant sulfamethazine in this system was mainly relied on the degradation of ·OH verified by both of the direct detection and indirect inhibition (using methanol). By using the calculation of Laplacian bond order, the degradation pathway of sulfamethazine followed by the cleavage of NS bond. This prediction was verified by the detection of intermediate products. Only 21% sulfamethazine could be degraded after 3‐h reaction in the classic Fenton reaction system, while it could be thoroughly degraded in 1.5 h in the MHACF‐MOF‐808(Zr) system. The influence of main parameters on the degradation effect of sulfamethazine, such as initial pH, the flow of H2, dosage of Pd/MOF‐808(Zr), concentration of sulfamethazine, ferrous, and hydrogen peroxide, were systematically studied. Based on the relative stability of Pd/MOF‐808(Zr) confirmed by the morphological characterization, sulfamethazine could be efficiently degraded in the MHACF‐MOF‐808(Zr) system. The novel MHACF‐MOF‐808(Zr) system was used to remove sulfamethazine under normal temperature and pressure. The introduction of H2 and Pd/MOF‐808(Zr) accelerated the reduction of FeIII back to FeII. Only trace level FeII was needed. The sulfamethazine could be degraded rapidly by the hydroxyl radical though the cleavage of SN bond. Based on the excellent stability of Pd/MOF‐808(Zr), SMT could be stably and efficiently removed after six consecutive reaction cycles.

Novel insights into ferrate (VI) activation by Mn-modified sludge biochar for sulfamethoxazole degradation: Dominance of hydroxyl group and Mn-O bond in the non-radical pathway

Abstract:Ferrate (Fe (VI)), as a versatile oxidizer, has been widely employed for water treatment. However, the rapid self-decomposition of Fe (VI) diminishes its practical application efficiency. In this study, a novel Mn-modified sludge biochar (MSBC) was synthesized for the first time to activate Fe (VI) and generate highly reactive Fe (IV)/Fe (V) for the rapid removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results showed that MSBC (0.10 g/L) effectively activated Fe (VI) (100 μM), and 87.39 % of SMX (10 μM) and 40.26 % of total organic carbon (TOC) were removed within 10 min. Notably, raising the solution pH (e.g., from 6.0 to 11.0) would result in decreasing the reactivity of Fe (VI) and a lower removal efficiency of SMX. The quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance and probe experiments suggested that •O 2 – and high-valent iron species (Fe (V)/Fe (IV)) were identified as the major contributions to the removal of SMX. The detailed activation sites of MSBC were –OH and Mn-O, as corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and characterization. These activation sites facilitated activation of Fe (VI) through efficient electron transfer. The Fukui index indicated that the N, S, and O atom of SMX were the primary attacked sites. Subsequently, five potential degradation pathways were proposed, with the cleavage of the S-N bond being the predominant one. The toxicity of these products was examined using ECOSAR program, revealing that main products showed low toxicity or non-toxicity. The Cl - , SO 4 2- , and NO 3 – had negligible effect on SMX degradation, although excessive concentrations of HCO 3 – and humic acid (HA) showed slightly inhibition. Additionally, the Fe (VI)/MSBC system also effectively removed 87.34 % of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and 93.91 % of sulfamethoxypyridazine (SMP). Overall, this study offered a practical and cost-effective approach for the activation of Fe (VI) and provided new insights to the degradation mechanism.

Synergistic Effect of PMS Activation by Fe0@Fe3O4 Anchored on N, S, O Co-Doped Carbon Composite for Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole

Abstract:High efficient activator is highly desired in the field of persulfate-based advanced oxidation process. In comparison with the previous studies, this study adopted nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen co-doped carbon material to support Fe-0 encapsulate in Fe3O4 to prepare iron-based modified carbon composite (Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC) by a facile two-step pyrolysis. Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC was then used for degradation of sulfamethoxazole. The results showed that Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC had superior catalytic activity for PMS activation due to the synergistic effect of iron-based compound and modified carbon. In the presence of 0.1 g/L of Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC, SMX (0.04 mM) could be completely degraded within 120 mM at pH 3.4 and 3 mM of PMS. The SMX degradation followed pseudo first-order kinetic model, with the rate constant of 0.12 min(-1), and the mineralization of SMX achieved 48.4%. Sulfate radicals dominated in the SMX degradation. In addition to Fe-0 and Fe3O4, carbon defects, graphitic N, sulfur and FeN4 also contributed to PMS activation. Fe-0 oxidation was the rate-limiting step for PMS activation. Dissolved oxygen made a minor contribution to Fe-0 oxidation. The intermediate products of SMX degradation were identified, and two pathways of SMX degradation were proposed. The influencing factors on SMX degradation were studied, including pH, temperature, PMS concentration, Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC dosage, chloridion, carbonate and humic acids, and the influencing mechanism was discussed. This study could provide an efficient PMS activator for the degradation of emerging organic pollutants in water and wastewater.
Ferrate (VI) oxidation of sulfamethoxazole enhanced by magnetized sludge-based biochar: Active sites regulation and degradation mechanism analysis

Abstract:Developing non radical systems for antibiotic degradation is crucial for addressing the inefficiency of conventional radical systems. In this study, novel magnetic-modified sludge biochar (MASBC) was synthesized to significantly enhance the oxidative degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by ferrate (Fe (VI)). In the Fe (VI)/MASBC system, 90.46% of SMX at a concentration of 10 μM and 49.34% of the total organic carbon (TOC) could be removed under optimal conditions of 100 μM of Fe (VI) and 0.40 g/L of MASBC within 10 min. Furthermore, the Fe (VI)/MASBC system was demonstrated with broad-spectrum removal capability towards sulfonamides in single or mixture. Quenching experiments, EPR analyses, and electrochemical experiments revealed that direct electron transfer (DET) and •O2- were mainly responsible for the removal of SMX, with functional groups (e.g., -OH, C=O) and Fe-O (redox of Fe (III)/Fe (II)) acting as the active sites, while the probe experiments showed that Fe (IV)/Fe (V) made a minor contribution to the degradation of SMX. Benefiting from the DET, the Fe (VI)/MASBC system exhibited a wide pH adaptation range (e.g., from 5.0 to 10.0) and strong anti-interference ability. The N atoms and their neighboring atoms in SMX were the prior degradation sites, with the cleavage of bond and ring opening. The degradation products showed low or non-toxicity according to ECOSAR program assessment. The removal of SMX remained within a reasonable range of 71.33%-90.46% over five consecutive cycles. Also, the Fe (VI)/MASBC system was demonstrated to be effectively applied for successful SMX removal in various water matrices, including ultrapure water, tap water, lake water, Yangtze River water, and wastewater. Therefore, this study offered new insights into the mechanism of Fe (VI) oxidation and would contribute to the efficient treatment of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The widespread application of Fenton reaction have been limited by the rapid precipitation of Fe(III) and the slow Fe(III) reduction. This work presents a strategy to address these concerns by adding metal-free reducing agent thiosulfate (S2O3 2−). Compared to the classical Fenton reaction at pH 3.0, S2O3 2− significantly accelerated the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) over a wide pH range of 3.0–7.0. The enhancement of SMX degradation was attributed to the complexation and reduction role of S2O3 2−, preventing the precipitation of iron ions and accelerating the reduction of Fe(III). A first-principles kinetic model was established and revealed that the interaction of S2O3 2− and Fe(III) was a fast equilibrium reaction, affecting the oxidation kinetics of SMX. Both HO• and Fe(IV) were found to be involved in the SMX degradation. Compared to HO•, Fe(IV) is much more selective, and thus SMX degradation was less affected by water matrices, maintaining high efficiency in real water samples. Transformation products analysis demonstrated that (i) sulfonamide bond (S-N or C-S bonds) cleavage, (ii) hydroxylation and (iii) nitrosubstitution and deamination were the major transformation pathway. This study could improve our understanding the role of S2O3 2− in Fe(III)/H2O2 system and provide a novel promising Fenton-like reaction for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, a bimetallic Cu-0/Zn-0 particles were prepared, characterized and used as Fenton-like catalyst for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results showed that Cu-0/Zn-0 particles were capable of converting O-2 to H2O2, center dot O-2(-) and %OH radicals. In bimetallic Cu-0/Zn-0 particles, Cu-0/Zn-0 corrosion cells were formed through the direct contact of Zn-0 and Cu-0, which not only accelerated the electron transfer from Zn-0 to O-2, leading to the promotion of H2O2 generation, but also enhanced the conversion of Cu2+ to Cu+/Cu-0, facilitating the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 to produce center dot O-2(-) and %OH radicals. SMX could be efficiently degraded in Cu-0/Zn-0-air system over a broad pH range from 3 to 9, the removal efficiency of SMX and TOC was 87.8% and 45.5%, respectively at following condition: SMX concentration, 20 mg/L; dosage of bimetallic Cu-0/Zn-0 particles (mole ratio of Zn to Cu was 1:2), 2 g/L; air flow rate, 1.8 L/min; reaction temperature, 25. and without adjusting pH. The recycling use of bimetallic Cu-0/Zn-0 particles leaded to the enhanced degradation of SMX due to the newly formed cuprous oxide (Cu2O), which could further catalytically activate O-2. The quenching experiment showed that the concentration of dissolved oxygen could significantly affect the main reactive oxidant species (ROSs). Additionally, the intermediate products of SMX degradation were detected and a possible pathway of SMX degradation as well as the catalytic mechanism of Cu-0/Zn-0-air system were proposed.

Abstract:Readily-available and efficient catalyst is essential for activating oxidants to produce reactive species for deeply remediating water bodies contaminated by antibiotics. In this study, Ferrocene (Fc) was introduced to establish a heterogeneous photo-Fenton system for the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics, taking sulfamethoxazole as a representative. Results showed that the removal of sulfamethoxazole was effective in Fc-catalyzed photo-Fenton system. Electron spin resonance and radical scavenging experiments verified that there was a photoindued electron transfer process from Fc to H2O2 and dissolved oxygen resulting in the formation of OH that was primarily responsible for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole. The reactions of OH with substructure model compounds of sulfamethoxazole unveiled that aniline moiety was the preferable reaction site of sulfamethoxazole, which was verified by the formation of hydroxylated product and the dimer of sulfamethoxazole in Fc-catalyzed photo-Fenton system. This heterogeneous photo-Fenton system displayed an effective degradation efficiency even in a complex water matrices, and Fc represented a long-term stability by using the catalyst for multiple cycles. These results demonstrate that Fc-catalyzed photo-Fenton oxidation may be an efficient approach for remediation of wastewater containing antibiotics.

Abstract:Both horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and ferrous ion (Fe2+) can degrade organic micropollutants (e.g., sulfamethazine) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), but they have their own disadvantages, such as low degradation efficiency and low pH condition, respectively. In order to overcome the above shortcomings, this study is to develop a HRP-Fenton-like system for sulfamethazine (SMR) efficient degradation by analyzing the optimal reaction conditions, degradation mechanisms, and effect of ions. Results show that HRP and Fe2+ achieve effective coupling by adding trace Fe2+ (≤ 10 μmol/mL) to the HRP system at pH = 5, and the degradation rate of SMR increased by 20.7–42% depending on Fe2+ concentration compared with single HRP treatment. Consumption of H2O2 and quenching of hydroxyl radicals confirmed that HRP dominated SMR removal in the HRP-Fenton-like system. HPLC-MS analysis shows that SMR was degraded by C-S bond breaking, N-S bond breaking, hydroxyl substitution, and rearrangement. Furthermore, Cl−, HCO3−, and NO3− exhibit an acceptable negative effect, while SO42− shows a positive effect on the degradation of SMR.
