Abstract:To study the time evolution of a molecular state in an ultra-fast chemical reaction, the use of shorter pulses with higher photon energy and narrower bandwidth for both pump and probe is necessary. However, quick and precise measurement of their detailed time structures is a challenge. Over the last decade, great efforts have been made to measure an attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse. To date, several methods have been developed to measure the pulse duration and completely reconstruct it. The attosecond spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) and attosecond frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) techniques are often used. However, these methods use state-of-the-art experimental set-ups and complicated data analysis procedures. To develop attosecond metrology for practical use (e.g. timing, measurement, evaluation, calibration, optimization, pumping, probing), we propose a quick and analytical method to precisely observe an attosecond XUV pulse with laser-assisted photo-ionization. The method is based on determining the laser-related phase of each streaked electron and using a transfer equation for one-step pulse reconstruction without any time-resolved measurements, iterative calculations, or data fitting procedures. Temporal errors of the pulse reconstruction are calculated from the XUV bandwidth. Because the transfer equation establishes a direct connection between the XUV pulse properties, the crucial laser parameters (peak intensity, phase, carrier envelope phase), the atomic ionization potential, and the measured photoelectron energy spectrum, we can use it to study any one of these properties from other known information and probe the dynamic processes of an ultra-fast reaction.

Abstract:With the development of micro-nano fabrication, the measurement of thermo-physical property of micro-nano material becomes more significant. At first, the basic principle of measurement of the thermo-physical property of micro-nano material with femtosecond laser and the means of realization were introduced. And then, two-temperature model, hyperbolic two-step model, hyperbolic one-step model, parabolic one-step model, dual-phase-lag model and parabolic two-step model were compared. Secondly, the characteristics of the measurement of the thermo-physical property of micro-nano material with femtosecond laser were introduced. Thirdly, three common system such as single-color femtosecond laser pump in front and probe system, two-color femtosecond laser pump in front and probe system, and single-color femtosecond laser pump and probe system in different side were introduced. Finally, the direction of future research in measurement of the thermo-physical property of materials was pointed out.

Abstract:We describe a simple approach for rejecting unwanted scattered light in two types of time-resolved pump-probe measurements, time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) and time-resolved incoherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (TRIARS). Sharp edged optical filters are used to create spectrally distinct pump and probe beams from the broad spectral output of a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser oscillator. For TDTR, the diffusely scattered pump light is then blocked by a third optical filter. For TRIARS, depolarized scattering created by the pump is shifted in frequency by approximate to 250 cm(-1) relative to the polarized scattering created by the probe; therefore, spectral features created by the pump and probe scattering can be easily distinguished.

Abstract:The coherence time measurement of laser pulse was studied by using counter-running pump probe technique in two-photon absorption materials. The coherence time of 23 ps, 532nm laser pulses for a Nd:YAG laser was measured, which coincided with the previous experimental results and had the same precision. The experimental results and the theoretical analysis show that additional two-photon absorption arises from two-beam coherence effect. This method can be applied to other laser measurement with various pulse widths.
A Single-Shot Technique for Measuring Broadband Two-Photon Absorption Spectra in Solution

Abstract:Applications involving two-photon activation, including two-photon fluorescence imaging, photodynamic therapy, and 3D data storage, require precise knowledge of the two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra of target chromophores. Broadband pump-probe spectroscopy using femtosecond laser pulses provides wavelength-dependent 2PA spectra with absolute cross sections, but the measurements are sometimes complicated by cross-phase modulation effects and dispersion of the broadband probe. Here, we introduce a single-shot approach that eliminates artifacts from cross-phase modulation and enables more rapid measurements by avoiding the need to scan the time delay between the pump and probe pulses. The approach uses counter-propagating beams to automatically integrate over the full interaction between the two pulses as they cross. We demonstrate this single-shot approach for a common 2PA reference, coumarin 153 (C153), in three different solvents using the output from a Yb:KGW laser. This approach provides accurate 2PA cross sections that are more reliable and easier to obtain compared with scanning pump-probe methods using co-propagating laser beams. The single-shot BB-2PA approach also has significant advantages compared with single-wavelength measurements, such as z-scan and two-photon fluorescence.

Abstract:Nano-optoelectronic sensors and devices bring tremendous revolutions in photoelectric conversion due to dimension reduced. The device geometry dominates the electron transport so that the spatially resolved optoelectronics properties are critical to characterize device performance. In this paper, it reports a two-photon pulsed laser scanning microscopy method which utilizes raster scan on device with two coherent light beams. By measuring the light induced photon absorption, it reflects the light matter interaction on single or two combined photon. The experimental results have shown that the photon absorption are dependent on surface defect, geometry shape and internal layers in nanoscale optoelectronic devices. The proposed method will not only spatially measure where optical absorption happens but also reveal what phenomenon is exactly generated at sub-micro scale.

Abstract:Ultrafast pump-probe measurements are used to characterize various samples, such as biological cells, bulk, and thin-film structures. However, typical implementations of the pump-probe apparatus are either slow or complex and costly hindering wide deployment. Here we combine a single-cavity dual-comb laser with a simple experimental setup to obtain pump-probe measurements with ultra-high sensitivity, fast acquisition, and high timing precision over long optical delay scan ranges of 12.5 ns that would correspond to a mechanical delay of about 3.75 meters. We employ digital signal balancing to obtain shot-noise-limited detection compatible with pump-probe microscopy deployment. Here we demonstrate ultrafast photoacoustics for thin-film sample characterization. We measured a tungsten layer thickness of 700 ± 4Å with shot-noise-limited detection. Such single-cavity dual-comb lasers can be used for any pump-probe measurements and are especially well-suited for ultrafast photoacoustic studies such as involving ultrasonic echoes, Brillouin oscillations, surface acoustic waves and thermal dynamics.

Abstract:Recent progress in femtosecond time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy in our laboratory is reviewed briefly. Improvements in significant parameters such as the sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio have been achieved so that much smaller signals can be detected. Using this system together with a static exchange gas continuous flow cryostat,various materials such as superconductors, nanomaterials, and semiconductors can be investigated, and important results in material structure and other aspects can be obtained.

Abstract:An adaptive pulse shaper controlled by multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scanning (MIIPS) was used, together with a prism-pair, to measure and cancel high-order phase distortions introduced by a high-numerical-aperture objective and other dispersive elements of a two-photon laser-scanning microscope. The delivery of broad-bandwidth (approximately 100 nm), sub-12-fs pulses was confirmed by interferometric autocorrelation measurements at the focal plane. A comparison of two-photon imaging with transform-limited and second-order-dispersion compensated laser pulses of the same energy showed a 6-to-11-fold improvement in the two-photon excitation fluorescence signal when applied to cells and tissue, and up to a 19-fold improvement in the second harmonic generation signal from a rat tendon specimen.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser fabrication outperforms the traditional fabrication techniques with high precision, high efficiency, low collateral damage and wide applicability, which has shown to be a powerful tool in precision machining. Imaging the ultrafast dynamics of femtosecond laser fabrication is necessary for understanding the processing mechanism and for establishing the corresponding physical models. Up to now, ultrafast measurement techniques based on the pump-probe strategy are the most used methods. However, they are limited by laser energy stability and materials surface uniformity, which have a heavy impact on the dynamic measurement precision of femtosecond laser fabrication. To overcome this limitation of the traditional pump-probe techniques, we developed chirped spectral mapping ultrafast photography (CSMUP), which can achieve single-shot real-time ultrafast imaging with a frame rate of about 250 billion frames per second (temporal frame interval of 4 ps) and a spatial resolution of less than 833 nm. We experimentally imaged the dynamics of femtosecond laser ablation in silicon under a 400 nm femtosecond laser exposure with CSMUP, and the experimental result agreed well with previous theoretical models. CSMUP provides a new strategy to improve the efficiency and accuracy of femtosecond laser fabrication by a single-shot dynamic measurement of the interaction between the femtosecond laser and materials, and it is expected to work as a real-time detection method for various ultrafast phenomena.

Abstract:An approach is proposed to analyze the two- and three-photon absorption process using the open-aperture Z-scan technique. The normalized transmittance equations of one pulse energy presented here can be used to investigate the effect of different temporal profiles of excitation laser pulses on the nonlinear absorption coefficients (NACs). The numerical simulations show that our method is well in accordance with the usual Z-scan in determination of two- and three-photon absorption coefficients in 0.6-1.0 ranges of nonlinear energy transmittance for the typical pulse models, such as Gaussian, sech2, Lorentz, and asymmetric sech2 models. Our results suggest that the introduced parameter in relation to the pulse envelope in the approach may become a candidate for the parameters taking account of the NAC deviation from the pulse profiles of the probe laser.

Abstract:We report on a novel method designed for measuring two photon action cross sections spectra in a single shot without tuning the excitation wavelength. Our technique is based on (i) using a nonlinear photonic crystal fiber to broaden the spectrum of the femtosecond excitation pulses and (ii) exploiting angular dispersion to focus different wavelengths to different lateral positions. As a result, two-photon fluorescence signal at different excitation wavelengths can be obtained simultaneously. As a proof of principle, the relative two-photon action cross sections of rhodamine green and DiI-C-18 are measured over 740 - 860 nm range using fluorescein as a reference. Our results are in good agreement with that obtained using conventional tunable mode-locked laser. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The measurement techniques of femtosecond spectroscopy are effective method to investigate ultrafast dynamics, they are widely used in the fields of physics, chemistry and biology. In this paper, the principle, experiment setup and the approaches to deal with the experiment data were presented. Then different measurement techniques such as transient absorption spectroscopy, photon echoes, optical Kerr effect and degenerate four-wave mixing were explained with special examples. At last, the application prospect of measurement techniques of femtosecond spectroscopy was forecasted.

Abstract:Advances in nano-electronics, nano-optics, energy harvesting materials, and nanoparticle-based photothermal therapies are motivating studies of the thermal properties of micro/nanostructures. Thus, the demands for highly sensitive and accurate thermal measurement techniques are encouraged for both fundamental studies and industrial applications. The time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method, based on an ultrafast pump-probe technique, enables high-fidelity thermal measurements at the micro/nanoscale and the observation of dynamic processes with sub-picosecond time resolution. TDTR is an optical technique, capable of measuring the thermal properties of micro/nanostructures, including thermal conductivity and interfacial thermal conductance of bulk substrates, thin films, and nanoparticles, among others. Here we review some recent developments in the state-of-the-art ultrafast pump-probe method applied to study the thermal and magnetic properties of materials at the micro- and nanometer scales. We also discuss in detail improvements to this technique by presenting several example extensions to its capabilities.

Application of Time-Resolved Pump-Probe System in Researching Photoconductive Material

Abstract:The transient electrical signal generated by ultrafast photoconductive material irradiated by ultrashort pulse laser is measured by the time-resolved pump-probe system. The usual pump-probe experimental setup is used to study dynamic change inside the material by measuring the change of the laser beam reflectivity or transmisivity. In this paper, the experimental setup is improved to directly measure transient electrical signals generated by photoconductive material. The improved experimental setup can directly reflect the carrier status inside the photoconductive material compared to the usual experimental setup, and the response rate of photoconductive material can be studied by measuring the transient electrical signal. The work process of the experimental measurement is described. Especially the detection process of the pump-probe is analyzed in detail. The method of determining the zero of delay time of the experimental system is presented. The measurement results showed that the width of transient electrical signals measured is on the level of picosecond. Finally, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the improved experimental setup has been analyzed.

Abstract:Investigations of the quantum interference in laser-assisted photoionization by an attosecond extreme ultraviolet (xuv) pulse shows an approximately constant value for the total photoionizations for different laser intensities. The square of the full width at half maximum of a photoelectron energy spectrum (PES) linearly depends on the laser intensity. By determining the laser-related phase of each streaked electron and using a transfer equation with linear corrections, an analytically quick method is proposed for precisely reconstructing the xuv pulse intensity (chirp) from one (two) measured PES(s) with a theoretical root-mean-square temporal (energy) difference of less than 1 attosecond (0.1 eV).

Abstract:Based on a modified cross-correlation technique, we experimentally demonstrate a technique for measuring the spatial–temporal intensity of laser pulses. Pulse widths at different spatial positions of the ultrashort pulse are measured by changing the scan position of the probe beam. Due to the existence of residual chirp in the transverse position, pulse widths at the center of the beam are less than that at the edge. By measuring the temporal evolution in the fastest growth area of spatial intensity during small-scale self-focusing, we find that its pulse width decreases as power increases because of the spatial–temporal coupling effect. The results show that this method not only can be used to accurately measure the pulse width at any one spatial position of the beam, but can also be useful for real-time monitoring of the spatial–temporal evolution.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce novel time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy called femtosecond two pulses induced stimulated emission spectroscopy, in which the generated nonlinear photoluminescence signal was used to identify the ultrafast dynamics of stimulated emission process in the semiconductor material. By employing two collinear fundamental femtosecond laser beams, we systematically investigated time-resolved multiphoton-induced amplified spontaneous emission in ZnO single crystal. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of this technique with the advantage of easy setup and high time resolution.

Abstract:Due to its breakthrough the electro-optical time response limitation for picosecond dynamics of processes, many research groups around the world operating in different fields from physics and chemistry to biology, medicine and material science, utilize laser setups capable of providing subpicosecond pulses and femtosecond-level time delay lines. However the signal amount of Femto-picosecond Dynamics is about at an altitude of 1%, but the fluctuation of femtosecond probe pulse at its best can only reach about 5%. Real-time correct the probe pulse is the only effective way to realize subpicosecond time-resolved detection precision of transient absorption spectroscopy. So in this paper, reference pulse was drawn into the measurement equipment through different methods to dispel the fluctuation of probe pulse. Firstly, in the case of Subpicosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy, probe and reference beams have the same spectral distribution and derived from the same source to measure the variation of transmittance in the excited volume. Secondly probe pulse is spatially and temporally overlapped to the excitation pulse, reference pulse spatially overlapped but temporally anticipated in respect to the excitation pulse. Finally reference pulse passes through the sample in a different position. The detector can be a CCD camera or a double photodiode. The results shown that when reference pulse passes through the sample in a different position and detected by CCD, the correction results can reach to 1%. Which meet the femto-picosecond dynamics precise requirement.
