Abstract:ABSTRACTForty-eight Min piglets at 7 days of age were randomly divided into two groups which were fed with 0% and 0.8% glutamine, respectively. Supplementation with 0.8% l-glutamine, the average daily gain (ADG) were significantly increased, and the concentrations of glutamine, glutamate, arginine and citrulline in plasma were significantly improved (P u003c .05). The expression of jejunal mucosa glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) were both significantly increased, and the concentration of malonaldehyde (MDA) was significantly reduced (P u003c .05). Furthermore, the villus height and the villus height to crypt depth ratio were significantly increased (P u003c .05). Glutamine supplementation significantly increased the expression levels of occludin mRNA and protein (P u003c .05), while the mRNA and protein expression levels of ZO-1 were not significantly affected. These results showed that dietary supplementation with glutamine contributed to improving intestinal development and whole-b...
