Abstract:In this paper, a zinc-iron-carbon nanotubes (Zn-Fe-CNTs) composite was prepared, characterized and used to develop a Fenton-like system of Zn-Fe-CNTs/O2 for the degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), in which H2O2 was generated in situ from zinc-carbon galvanic cells and oxygen in aqueous solution was activated by iron attached on the surface of CNTs to produce ·OH radicals for the oxidation of 4-CP. The experimental results showed that the particles of Zn and Fe in Zn-Fe-CNTs composite were adhered to the surface of CNTs, which accelerated the electron transfer process. The BET area of Zn-Fe-CNTs composite was 32.9 m2/g. The contents of Zn and Fe (% w) in the composite were 44.7% and 4.2%, respectively. The removal efficiency of 4-CP and TOC in Zn-Fe-CNTs/O2 system was 90.8% and 52.9%, respectively, with the initial pH of 2.0, O2 flow rate of 800 mL/min, Zn-Fe-CNTs dosage of 1.0 g/L, 4-CP concentration of 50 mg/L and reaction time of 20 min. Based on the analysis of the degradation intermediate products with LC-MS and IC, a possible degradation pathway of 4-CP in Zn-Fe-CNTs/O2 system was proposed.

Abstract:Problems such as bacterial resistance caused by tetracycline antibiotics pose a serious threat to human production and life and ecosystems. We prepared ZnFe2O4@ZnWO4 heterojunction nanocomposites using hydrothermal and coprecipitation methods. The micromorphology, structure, and photoelectrochemical properties were analyzed. In combination with the presence of H2O2, the photo-Fenton activity of the antibiotic tetracycline at high concentration was tested under visible light irradiation, and its catalytic mechanism was investigated. The results showed that the composition of the composite heterojunction improved the catalytic activity of the catalyst. At a pollutant concentration of 50 mg L-1 and pH 5, 30% ZnWO4/ZnFe2O4 degraded 92.1% of tetracycline in 60 min with a degradation rate of 0.0295 min-1, which was 6.7 times higher than that of pure ZnFe2O4. The results of free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance techniques indicated that hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide radical (O2-) played important roles in the photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline. Notably, the catalyst maintained a high degradation rate (80%) after five cycles. ZnFe2O4 introduced in this article may provide a promising strategy for achieving strong light absorption and is authoritative in meeting future environmental requirements.
Preparation of SnO2–TiO2/Fly Ash Cenospheres and Its Application in Phenol Degradation

Abstract:SnO2 -TiO2 /fly ash cenospheres (FAC) were prepared via hydrothermal method and used as an active photocatalyst in a photocatalytic system. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and N2 adsorption-desorption measurements were used to determine the structure and optical property of SnO2 -TiO2 /FAC. Phenol was selected as the model substance for photocatalytic reactions to evaluate catalytic ability. Results showed that the degradation efficiency of phenol by SnO2 -TiO2 /FAC was 90.7% higher than that decomposed by TiO2 /FAC. Increased efficiency could be due to the enhanced synergistic effect of semiconductors and FAC could provide more adsorption sites for the pollutant in the photocatalytic reaction. Furthermore, SnO2 -TiO2 /FAC composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic stability in four reuse cycles. Radical-trapping experiments further revealed the dominating functions of holes in the photocatalytic reaction.

Abstract:Heterogeneous Fenton-like systems using H2O2 as an oxidant have been extensively investigated in acidic and neutral conditions, but usually, they become ineffective under alkaline conditions. In this study, a cuprous graphitic carbon nitride material (Cu-CN) was prepared that can generate singlet oxygen (1O2) from H2O2. The results demonstrate that at pH 11, 95 % of 50 mg/L p-chlorophenol (4-CP) can be effectively eliminated within 120 min. Through semi-quantitative analysis and density functional theory calculations, it has been confirmed that 1O2 is the dominant reactive oxygen species in this system under alkaline conditions. The main pathway for 1O2 generation involves the formation of a complex between & sdot;O2- and Cu(II)-N sites, and the subsequent intra-molecular electron transfer. To enhance the stability and separation performance of this catalyst, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was employed as a binder to combine Cu-CN with Fe3O4. The terminal hydroxyl groups in PEG were cross-liked by metals, thus forming a solid and magnetic composite (CuFe@PEG). Compared to Cu-CN, CuFe@PEG exhibited remarkable performance with 93 % retention of its original capacity for 4-CP removal at pH 11. Furthermore, after seven cycles, the degradation efficiency only decreased by 6.36 %. This study introduces a novel approach for utilizing Fenton-like reactions in treating alkaline wastewater.

Abstract:A novel zinc-carbon nanotubes (Zn-CNTs) composite was prepared, characterized and used in O3 system for the enhanced degradation and mineralization of chlorinated phenol. The Zn-CNTs was characterized by SEM, BET and XRD, and the degradation of 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol (CMP) in aqueous solution was investigated using Zn-CNTs/O3 system. The experimental results showed that the rate constant of total organic carbon (TOC) removal was 0.29 min−1, much higher than that of only O3 system (0.059 min−1) because Zn-CNTs/O2 system could generate H2O2 in situ, the concentration of H2O2 could reach 156.14 mg/L within 60 min at pH 6.0. The high mineralization ratio of CMP by Zn-CNTs/O3 occurred at wide pH range (3.0–9.0). The increase of Zn-CNTs dosage or gas flow rate contributed to the enhancement of CMP mineralization. The intermediates of CMP degradation were identified and the possible degradation pathway was tentatively proposed.

Abstract:A novel Fenton-like catalyst (Zn-Fe-CNTs) capable of converting O2 to H2O2 and further to OH was prepared through infiltration fusion method followed by chemical replacement in argon atmosphere. The catalyst was characterized by SEM, EDS, TEM, XRD and XPS. The reaction between Zn-Fe-CNTs and O2 in aqueous solution could generate H2O2 in situ, which was further transferred to OH. The Fenton-like degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) using Zn-Fe-CNTs as catalyst was evaluated. The results indicated that Zn-Fe-CNTs had a coral porous structure with a BET area of 51.67m2/g, exhibiting excellent adsorption capacity for SMX, which enhanced its degradation. The particles of Zn0 and Fe0/Fe2O3 were observed on the surface of Zn-Fe-CNTs. The mixture of Zn0 and CNTs could reduce O2 into H2O2 by micro-electrolysis and Fe0/Fe2O3 could catalyze in-situ generation of H2O2 to produce OH through Fenton-like process. When initial pH=1.5, T=25°C, O2 flow rate=400mL/min, Zn-Fe-CNTs=0.6g/L, SMX=25mg/L and reaction time=10min, the removal efficiency of SMX and TOC was 100% and 51.3%, respectively. The intermediates were detected and the possible pathway of SMX degradation and the mechanism of Zn-Fe-CNTs/O2 process were tentatively proposed.

Abstract:Stopped-flow technology and HPLC analysis were used to study the degradation mechanism and reaction kinetics of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in Fenton oxidation process. The results indicated that benzoquinone and hydroquinone were simultaneously produced in process of Fenton oxidizing 4-CP by stopped-flow technology analysis. The data obtained by HPLC showed that hydroquinone was generated in great quantities following the decrease of benzoquinone. It could be inferred by batch experiments that benzoquinone would be transformed into hydroquinone in Fenton process and hydroperoxyl radical (HO2·) would take the main part in this process. In our study, there would exist two catalytic systems in Fenton process, and one was Fe2+and Fe3+, the other was hydroquinone and benzoquinone. Moreover, the rate constants of hydroquinone, benzoquinone, and 4-chlorocatechol were 2.78 × 106 L s−1 mol−1, 9.38 × 108 L s−1 mol−1, and 6.47 × 106 L s−1 mol−1, respectively.

Abstract:Magnetic nanoscaled Fe(3)O(4)/CeO(2) composite was prepared by the impregnation method and characterized as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) degradation. The catalytic activity was evaluated in view of the effects of various processes, pH value, catalyst addition, hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) concentration, and temperature, and the pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of 0.11 min(-1) was obtained for 4-CP degradation at 30 °C and pH 3.0 with 30 mM H(2)O(2), 2.0 g L(-1) Fe(3)O(4)/CeO(2), and 0.78 mM 4-CP. The high utilization efficiency of H(2)O(2), calculated as 79.2%, showed a promising application of the catalyst in the oxidative degradation of organic pollutants. The reusability of Fe(3)O(4)/CeO(2) composite was also investigated after six successive runs. On the basis of the results of metal leaching, the effects of radical scavengers, intermediates determination, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis, the dissolution of Fe(3)O(4) facilitated by CeO(2) played a significant role, and 4-CP was decomposed mainly by the attack of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), including surface-bound •OH(ads) generated by the reaction of Fe(2+) and Ce(3+) species with H(2)O(2) on the catalyst surface, and •OH(free) in the bulk solution mainly attributed to the leaching of Fe.

Abstract:The removal of chlorophenol (CP) contaminants from water is a great challenge owing to their natural robustness and the toxic chlorinated by-products generated in degradation processes. In this work, a series of three-dimensional nanoflower-like structured photocatalysts (CQDs/ZnIn2S4-x, x = 1, 2, or 3 wt%) were fabricated via a facile hydrothermal approach. Excellent photocatalytic abilities toward 4-CP degradation under Xe lamp irradiation were achieved over the as-prepared composites. The removal efficiency of total organic carbon for 4-CP on the optimized CQDs/ZnIn2S4-2 was 49.1%, which was 16.0% higher than that of ZnIn2S4. The presence of CQDs could not only be used to adjust controllable band structures for enhancing light absorption, but it could also serve as an electron acceptor to promote the transition of electron–hole pairs. Moreover, a possible degradation mechanism of 4-CP was also proposed according to the analyses of active species, electron paramagnetic resonance characterization, degradation products, and attacked sites. Overall, this work unveils a superior function of an efficient photocatalyst for refractory organic pollutants.
Kinetics study on degradation of herbicide ZJ0777 by Fenton reagent

Abstract:To establish an efficient oxidation process for ZJ0777 degradation, the effects of operating parameters such as initial concentrations of ZJ0777, H2 O2 and FeSO4??7H2 O were examined during treatment with Fenton reagent. Firstly, the effect of initial ZJ0777 concentration was tested between 0. 12 mmol/L and 0. 48 mmol/L. More than 90% of ZJ0777 was degraded after 32 h with an initial concentration of 0. 12 mmol/L and in 48 h with an initial concentration of 0. 24 mmol/L. At an initial concentration of 0. 48 mmol/L, only 87% conversion of ZJ0777 could be obtained in 84 h. And the influence of initial amount of H2 O2 between 150 and 300 mmol/L was analyzed. The effective degradation of ZJ0777 was reached. The degradation rate was found to increase with increasing dosages of H2 O2 . Further, the effect of initial FeSO4??7H2 O concentrations on the homogeneous degradation of ZJ0777 was also investigated. The increase of Fe2+ doses accelerated the degradation of ZJ0777 in the range of 5 -20 mmol/L. Addition of Fe2+ became inefficient and unnecessary. Kinetic analysis indicated that ZJ0777 degradation by the homogeneous Fenton reaction could be described by a pseudo-first-order reaction model and the apparent activation energy was 75. 34 kJ/mol.

Abstract:Herein, Fe-g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction is elaborately designed to build a photo-Fenton system for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). In this study, the H2O2 decomposition performance of the Z-scheme heterojunction has been improved due to the doping of iron, improve photogenerated electrons transportability and facilitate spread of radicals, according to the efficacy analyses, and trapping experiment, ESR analysis as well as degradation pathways of TC. Moreover, DFT theoretical results suggest that the Z-scheme transfer route coupled with the generated photo–Fenton process builds a Z-scheme-charge-transfer platform for remarkable degradation of emerging pollutants, and the formation of Fe-N4 sites induces a spin polarization of the material and also introduces a defect state in the original forbidden band, which leads to extremely activity for the removal of TC in the photo-Fenton system. The study shows that 1O2 and •O2− are the main active species participating in the degradation process.
Fenton-like Degradation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol Using Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Fenton-like degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in aqueous solution was investigated over Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as catalyst. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, and physical property measurement system (PPMS). The catalytic results showed that Fe3O4 MNPs presented good properties for the degradation and mineralization of 2,4-DCP, achieving complete decomposition of 2,4-DCP and 51% of TOC removal after 180min at reaction conditions of H2O2 12mM, Fe3O4 MNPs 1.0g/L, 2,4-DCP 100mg/L, pH 3.0 and T 30°C. The effect of different reaction parameters such as initial pH, H2O2 dosage, Fe3O4 MNPs addition, initial concentration of 2,4-DCP and temperature on two-stage first-order kinetics of 2,4-DCP degradation was studied. A high utilization efficiency of H2O2 calculated as 73% was observed. According to the analyses of iron leaching, reactive oxidizing species and degradation intermediates, a possible mechanistic steps of 2,4-DCP degradation dominated by OH reactions (especially by free OH in the bulk solution) were proposed. Besides, stability and reusability of Fe3O4 MNPs were tested.
Efficient photocatalytic in-situ Fenton degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol via anthraquinone-modified carbon nitride for 2e- oxygen reduction

Abstract:Constructing a photocatalytic in-situ Fenton system (PISFs) is a promising strategy to address the need for continuous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) addition and the low efficiency of H2O2 activation for hydroxyl radical generation in the traditional Fenton reaction. In this study, we constructed a photocatalytic in-situ Fenton system using anthraquinone-modified carbon nitride (AQ-C3N4) for efficient pollutant degradation. The resultant AQ-C3N4 not only enhanced the production of H2O2 but also increased the generation of hydroxyl radical (·OH). Experimental results demonstrated that, the apparent rate constant for the degradation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by AQ-C3N4-PISFs was 0.145 min-1, which is 2.74 times higher than that of C3N4 under visible light. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that AQ modification promotes electron-hole separation while increasing the adsorption energy of O2. Independent gradient model (IGM) analysis based on Hirshfeld Partition revealed that van der Waals interactions between AQ-C3N4 and 2,4-DCP promoted the degradation process. This work provides new ideas to overcome the problems of continuous addition of H2O2 and low utilization of ·OH that exist in conventional Fenton system.

Enhanced removal of Chlorofene catalyzed by a Fenton-like systemin the presence of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Recently,carbon nanotubes(CNTs)have attracted increasing attention due to their exceptional physical and chemical properties and their excellent electron transfer property in high efficient catalysts or carriers of catalysts research field.In this paper,the role of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs-COOH)played in the degradation of chlorofene(CF)by a Fenton-like system Fe3+/H2O2 was studied.The effects of reaction parameters,such as pH,Fe3+concentration,H2O2 concentration,MWCNTs-COOH concentration,and reaction temperature have also been investigated.The results indicated that the addition of MWCNTs-COOH exhibited an enhanced effect on CF oxidation,and the removal efficiency of CF increased with increasing Fe3+concentration,H2O2 concentration,and reaction temperature.The degradation pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant of CF increased more than 20 times in the system containing 0.05 mmol·L-1 Fe3+,1.0 mmol·L-1 H2O2,0.02 mmol·L-1 CF and 4 ppm MWCNTs-COOH at 25 ℃ than that in the same system but omitting MWNCTs-COOH.In order to have a better understanding of the reaction mechanism,radical quenching assays were carried out,and electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)technology was employed to determine the reactive oxygen species(ROS).The results suggested that hydroxyl radical(·OH)was the dominant ROS,which may be responsible for the decomposition of CF.Finally,three intermediates of CF were identified using an electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer(TOF 5600 LC-MS).

Abstract:Heterogeneous photo-Fenton technology combines photocatalytic and Fenton reactions to utilize solar energy and H2O2 efficiently, which is currently one of the most effective technologies for removing organic pollutants. In this work, FeWO4/BiOCl composite with different BiOCl contents was successfully produced by a two-step hydrothermal method. The photo-Fenton efficiency of the synthesized materials was assessed by the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) under simulated solar irradiation. The as-synthesized FeWO4/BiOCl composite exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic performances than individual semiconductors in the presence of H2O2 under simulated solar irradiation, and the apparent reaction rate constant reached as high as 0.0531 min−1, which was 4 times and 1.5 times higher than that of BiOCl and FeWO4, respectively. The effects of pH, TCH concentration, H2O2 concentration, and catalyst dosage on TCH degradation were investigated to identify the optimized reaction conditions. The excellent recyclability of FeWO4/BiOCl composite towards TCH photo-Fenton degradation was also shown. Photoelectrochemical analysis was performed to check the effective charge separation. The remarkably enhanced photo-Fenton catalytic performance of FeWO4/BiOCl composite was ascribed to effective charge separation and the production of more ·OH radicals. The FeWO4/BiOCl composite has proven to be a highly efficient and promising catalyst for Fenton-like processes to deal with practical environmental issues.

Abstract:The fluorine doped ZnWO4 photocatalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis and annealing treatment. The existing states of fluorine in the crystal were elucidated, and the effects of fluorine on the crystal structure, photocatalytic activity, and degradative intermediates were investigated. The doping concentration of fluorine in the interstitial lattice of ZnWO4 crystal can be controlled bythe annealing conditions. The photocatalytic activity can be enhanced about 50% after the doped ZnWO4 was annealed at 450 degrees C for 1 h due to perfect crystal structure. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity after fluorine doping could be attributed to the higher separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, which results in a large number of holes participated in the photocatalytic process. The fluorine doping does not change the degradation pathway of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in our system. 4-CP was mainly transformed into hydroxylated aromatic intermediates such as benzoquinone (BQ), hydroquinone (HQ), and 4-chlorocatechol (4-CC). The photodegradation of 4-CP in powdered F-doped ZnWO4 system proceeded via direct holes oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Degradation of 4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol (PCMX) by a heterogeneous Fenton-like process using nanoparticulate zero-valent iron (nZVI) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at pH 6.3 was investigated. Interactive effects of three factors-initial PCMX concentration, nZVI dosage, and H2O2 concentration-were investigated using the response surface method based on the Box-Behnken design. Experimental results showed that complete decomposition of PCMX and 65% of total organic carbon removal were observed after 30 min of reaction at neutral pH under recommended reaction conditions: nZVI, 1.0 g/L; H2O2, 18 mM; and initial PCMX concentration, 0.15 g/L. Based on the effects of scavengers n-butanol and KI, removal of PCMX was mainly attributed to the attack of •OH, especially the surface-bonded •OH. A possible degradation pathway of PCMX was proposed.
