Abstract:Liquid lubricant of low affinity makes slippery coatings widely used in lubricating, anti-biofouling, anti-icing, fluid guiding, and drag reduction. Two critical challenges, however, remain in the practical application of slippery coatings consisting of liquid lubricants: (1) universality regardless of roughness and chemical composition of substrates, (2) stability of surface lubricity against evaporation. Herein, a chemical method is reported to create a universal and stable slippery lubricant-adhesive cooperated coating (SLACC) through acid catalyzed dehydration reaction between the phenolic hydroxyl of polydopamine (PDA), with universal (for challenge-1) and strong (for challenge-2) adhesion properties, and liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with lubricant properties. Through overlying PDMS on PDA, a spatial gradient interpenetration of chemical combined PDA and PDMS leaving lubricant PDMS at the outermost of coating is achieved. This structure contributes to the following performances of SLACC: nearly universality suitable for 100 different abiotic or biotic substrates and stability sustainable for long-term usages, UV radiating, refrigerating, hot air drying, freeze drying, knife scratch and abrasion. This proposed strategy is envisioned anti-fouling from plane to tube and exhibits drag reduction in confined space.

Abstract:The polyelectrolyte within the hydrogel consistently attracts lipids to its surface through supramolecular interactions, thus forming a lubricated surface that ensures sustained lubrication. This development not only offers a novel and effective approach to lubricating hydrogels but also opens new paths for the creation of cutting‐edge biomimetic lubricating materials. The lubrication process of natural joint cartilage involves a series of coordinated mechanisms, a key aspect of which is its ability to continuously extract lubricating components from synovial fluid to achieve sustained lubrication. Inspired by this natural phenomenon, this study reports a novel polyelectrolyte hydrogel, specifically integrating ε‐poly‐L‐lysine (ε‐PL), adeptly captures lipids from environment to achieve effective lubrication similar to human joints. The ε‐PL within the hydrogel facilitates the dynamic sequestration of lipids, fostering interfacial self‐assembly. This setup, enriched with highly hydrated lipid head groups, enhances boundary lubrication capabilities for extended performance. Through rigorous evaluation of friction coefficients and supramolecular interactions between the hydrogel and lipids, it identified hydrogen bonding, charge‐dipole, and hydrophobic interactions as key to this self‐assembly. The findings affirm the versatility of polyelectrolytes in synthesizing lubricating hydrogels, bridging the gap to the creation of biomimetic hydrogels that mimic natural lubrication with enhanced durability and efficiency.

Abstract:This work reports on a class of perfluorinated gel lubricants (PFGs), focusing on improving the load‐carrying performances of base lubricants. Excellent tribological properties of PFGs are confirmed by tribological tests in a variety of harsh testing conditions. Investigated lubrication mechanism reveals that PFGs promote lubrication through the synergistic action of two layers of tribofilm. Lubrication failure under heavy load condition due to the limited carrying capacity of base lubricants usually results in catastrophic failure of mechanical systems. In this work, a class of perfluorinated gel lubricants (PFGs) is prepared, retaining excellent lubricity and load‐carrying performances under high load. Self‐assembly mechanism confirmed by molecular dynamics simulation indicates that the gelators in PFGs self‐assemble into a 3D network structure through intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The confinement effect of gelator self‐assembly in the base oil contributes to avoiding lubrication failure and environmental pollution caused by base oil creeping and leakage. Simple synthesis, creep recovery, and high sol–gel phase transition temperatures confer more benefits for PFGs applications. Moreover, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques are employed to investigate the lubrication mechanism of PFGs, revealing that lubricants can interact with the friction interface to form two layers of tribofilm which are formed by adsorption and tribochemical reaction. PFGs provide an eco‐friendly solution for lubricating under heavy load condition.

Abstract:Hydrogel coatings merge the surface lubrication with the substrate's mechanical properties. However, their loose networks always bring about surface wear problems. Based on a good solvent swelling and subsurface‐initiated polymerization method, a robust lubricating hydrogel coating is developed with an interface semi‐interpenetrating network between gel and diverse polymer substrates, to greatly suppress crack and expand wear resistance by entangled chain dissipations, outperforming traditional surface modifications. Lubricating hydrogel coatings on inert rubber and plastic surfaces significantly reduce friction and wear, thus enhancing material durability and lifespan. However, achieving optimal hydration lubrication typically requires a porous polymer network, which unfortunately reduces their mechanical strength and limits their applicability where robust durability and wear‐resistance are essential. In the research, a hydrogel coating with remarkable wear resistance and surface stability is developed by forming a semi‐interpenetrating polymer network with polymer substrate at the interface. By employing a good solvent swelling method, monomers, and photoinitiators are embedded within the substrates' subsurface, followed by in situ polymerization under ultraviolet light, creating a robust semi‐interpenetrating and entangled network structure. This approach, offering a thicker energy‐dissipating layer, outperforms traditional surface modifications in wear resistance while preserving anti‐fatigue, hydrophilicity, oleophobicity, and other properties. Adaptable to various rubber and plastic substrates by using suitable solvents, this method provides an efficient solution for creating durable, lubricating surfaces, broadening the potential applications in multiple industries.

Abstract:Hydrogels with pure hydrophilic network have received much attention due to their excellent low frictional behavior. However, the lubrication performance of hydrogels is not satisfied under high-speed condition due to the energy dissipation caused by adsorbed polymer chains as well as the failure of lubricating mechanisms accompanied by the transition of lubrication regime. In this work, interpenetrating double-network organohydrogels were constructed by combining hydrophilic and oleophilic polymer networks to modify the physiochemical properties of surface polymer chains, especially the chain mobility. The oleophilic polymer network spatially restricting the mobility of the swollen hydrophilic network in water, resulted in a low coefficient of friction (ca. 0.01) compared with conventional hydrogels at high speed (0.1 m s-1 ). Meanwhile, the organohydrogels had superior wear resistance, with almost no wear observed on the sliding track after 5 k cycles of rubbing at high speed. The design concept of organohydrogels can be extended to a variety of low-wear, highly-lubricating materials.

Macroscale Superlubricity under Ultrahigh Contact Pressure in the Presence of Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets

Abstract:It is difficult to achieve macroscale superlubricity under high contact pressures and high normal loads. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoadditives were introduced into an ionic liquid alcohol solution (IL(as)) with contact pressures up to 1.044 GPa, which resulted in a friction coefficient (COF) of 0.004 and a robust superlubricity state lasting for 2 h. Compared with the LDH particles (LDH-Ps) with ca. 90-nm widths and 18-nm thickness, micron-scale LDH nanosheet (LDH-N) additives with ca. 1.5-µm width and 6-nm thickness increased the load-bearing capacity by approximately three times during superlubricity. The lubricant film thickness and the ultrathin longitudinal dimension of the LDH-N additives did not influence the continuity of the fluid film on the contact surface. These improvements resulted from the protective adsorption layer and ion distribution formed on the contact interface, as revealed by detailed surface analyses and simulation studies. In particular, the sliding energy barrier and Bader charge calculation revealed that weak shear sliding between the nanosheet and the solid surface formed easily and the anions in the liquid adsorbed on the solid surface exhibited electrostatic repulsion forces, which generated stable tribological properties synergistically. This research provides a novel method for obtaining macroscale superlubricity for practical industrial applications.

Abstract:Abstract Silicone elastomers-based materials have been extensively involved in the field of biomedical devices, while their use is extremely restricted due to the poor surface lubricity and inherent hydrophobicity. This paper describes a novel strategy for generating a robust layered soft matter lubrication coating on the surface of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) silicone elastomer, by entangling thick polyzwitterionic polyelectrolyte brush of poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) into the sub-surface of the initiator-embedded stiff hydrogel coating layer of P(AAm-co-AA-co-HEMA-Br)/Fe, to achieve a unified low friction and high load-bearing properties. Meanwhile, the stiff hydrogel layer with controllable thickness is covalently anchored on the surface of PDMS by adding iron powder to provide catalytic sites through surface catalytically initiated radical polymerization (SCIRP) method and provides high load-bearing capacity, while the topmost brush/hydrogel composite layer is highly effective for aqueous lubrication. Their synergy effects are capable of attaining low friction coefficient (COFs) under wide range of loaded condition in water environment with steel ball as sliding pair. Furthermore, the influence of mechanical modulus of the stiff hydrogel layer on the lubrication performance of layered coating is investigated, for which the COF is the lowest only when the modulus of the stiff hydrogel layer well matches the PDMS substrate. Surprisingly, the COF of the modified PDMS could remain low friction (COF < 0.05) stably after encountering 50,000 sliding cycles under 10 N load. Finally, the surface wear characterizations prove the robustness of the layered lubricating coating. This work provides a new route for engineering lubricious silicon elastomer with low friction, high load-bearing capacity, and considerable durability.

Abstract:Developing surfaces that realize lubrication and durable wear resistance under high pressure has great implications in areas ranging from electromechanical systems to advanced biomedical devices but has proven challenging. Inspired by the zonal and transitional structure of articular cartilage, we fabricate a hydrogel-elastomer hybrid surface, where the hydrogel interpenetrates into the polymer elastomer substrate as a transitional and bonding zone, that exhibits a low coefficient of friction and wear resistance under a high load. First, we entrap benzophenone within the surface of polymer substrates such as polydimethylsiloxane, polyvinylchloride, and polyurethane. The hybrid surface is then achieved through initiating polymerization of the acrylamide monomer on the polymer surface upon ultraviolet irradiation. We observe an interpenetration area of the hydrogel and the polymer substrate. The hybrid surface shows a low coefficient of friction (∼0.05) under a very high load (over 100 atm contact pressure). It conserves the lubrication property over 100,000 cycles under a 10.9 MPa pressure and shows slight wear. This work brings a new perspective on designing surfaces with a lubrication property and wear resistance, showing broad applications.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogels as one kind of soft materials with a typical three-dimensional (3D) hydrophilic network have been getting great attention in the field of biolubrication. However, traditional hydrogels commonly show poor tribology performance under high-load conditions because of their poor mechanical strength and toughness. Herein, pure chemical-crosslinking hydrogels mixed with different types of the micron-scale fibers can meet the requirements of strength and toughness for biolubrication materials, meanwhile the corresponding tribology performance improves significantly. In a typical case, three kinds of reinforcement matrix including needle-punched fibers, alginate fibers, and cottons are separately combined with Poly( n -vinyl pyrrolidone)-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (PVP-PHEMA) hydrogels to prepare fibers reinforced composite hydrogels. The experimental results show that the mechanical properties of fibers reinforced composite hydrogels improve greatly comparable with pure PVP-PHEMA hydrogels. Among three kinds of fibers reinforced composite hydrogel, the as-prepared composite hydrogels reinforced with needle-punched fibers possess the best strength, modulus, and anti-tearing properties. Friction tests indicate that the fibers reinforced composite hydrogels demonstrate stable water-lubrication performance comparable with pure PVP-PHEMA hydrogels. Besides, the hydrogel-spunlace fiber samples show the best load-bearing and anti-wear capacities. The improved tribology performance of the composite hydrogels is highly related to mechanical property and the interaction between the fibers and hydrogel network. Finally, spunlace fibers reinforced hydrogel materials with high load-bearing and low friction properties are expected to be used as novel biomimetic lubrication materials.

Abstract:One of the most prominent properties of hydrogels is their excellent hydrolubrication that derives from the strong hydration of the gel network. However, excessive hydration makes hydrogels exhibit a very poor mechanical property, which limits their practical applications. Here, we prepared a novel composite surface of hydrogel nanofibers embedded in an anodic aluminum oxide substrate which exhibited both excellent lubrication and a high load-bearing capacity. Through the copolymerization of acrylic acid and 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt, the gel network swelled sufficiently in aqueous solution and caused high osmotic pressure repulsion to bear heavy loads and hence exhibited excellent aqueous lubrication (μ ≈ 0.01). Notably, the friction coefficient of gels showed no dependence on the load in the experiment, whereas it was strongly influenced by the sliding velocity. Additionally, both electrolyte solution and ionic surfactants affect the conformation of the polymer chains, which results in a significant impact on the friction properties of hydrogel fibers.
Macroscale Superlubricity under Extreme Pressure Enabled by the Combination of Graphene-Oxide Nanosheets with Ionic Liquid

Abstract:The liquid-superlubricity state has rarely been studied under an average contact pressure exceeding 300 MPa at the macroscale. In this work, a robust macroscale liquid-superlubricity state (mu approximate to 0.005) under an extreme pressure of 600 MPa was reported, which was enabled by the combination of graphene-oxide (GO) nanosheets with an ionic liquid (IL) between the frictional pairs of Si3N4 /sapphire. The analysis indicated that a composite boundary layer (formed by IL) at the interface contributed to the excellent antiwear performance, thereby providing a lubricating condition under extreme pressure. Notably, GO nanosheets were directly observed to adsorb on worn surfaces, thereby proving the transformation of the shear interface from Si3N4/sapphire into GO/GO nanosheets. The extreme pressure property and extremely low shear stress between the interlayers of GO nanosheets contributed to the achievement of superlubricity. Therefore, the synergistic effect between GO nanosheets and IL played a dominant role in achieving liquid-superlubricity under extreme pressure at the macroscale. This study provided a novel method to achieve liquid-superlubricity under extreme conditions-by the synergistic effect of 2D materials and liquid molecules-accelerating the achievement of liquid-superlubricity in industrial applications. Abstract:A novel and simple method for the preparation of two-component gel lubricant and some evaluation of its physicochemical and lubricating properties are reported. The addition of two-component gelator including bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate and cholesterol to white oil can result in self-assembly to form a gel. The gelation mechanism was characterized by the combination of atomistic molecular dynamics simulation and experiment. It not only has excellent thermal stability, but also possesses thermal reversibility, creep recovery and thixotropic properties. Noticeably, the gel can significantly enhance lubricous and AW performances of base oil. Obtained by FIB-TEM, EDS, XPS and QCM characterization, we speculate that the gelator forms an effective adsorption and tribochemical reaction film, so it can protect the contact surface from being worn.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Superlubricity is known to dramatically reduce frictional energy consumption and to improve service life of mechanical devices and biological systems. However, reduction of wear during the running-in period of friction pairs, especially under high contact pressures, still remains an unresolved issue affecting all machines. Experiments: Here the lubrication, adsorption, and conformational properties of hydrated ions and polyethylene glycol (PEG) mixtures were evaluated at different mass fractions and concentrations of PEG and salts by ball-on-disc tribometer, zeta-potential, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), and dynamic light scatting (DLS) analyses. Findings: These mixtures exhibited superlubricity between Si3N4 and sapphire surfaces in a wide range of concentrations and ions valency. Interestingly, a running-in phase shorter than 1 min and low wear rate of 1.85 mu m(3) /(N.m) were observed at contact pressures up to 555 MPa, significantly higher to earlier findings. PEG chains retain random coils filling the bulk of the interfacial film without strongly adsorbing on the interfaces but significantly increasing the viscosity of lubricating film, thereby favoring hydrodynamic lubrication. Hydrated ions are strongly adsorbed on the negatively charged ceramic surfaces, ensuring a sustained hydration effect maintaining superlubricity. The outstanding lubrication characteristics of the PEG/ions mixtures were attributed to the synergistic action of hydration and hydrodynamic lubrication, which appears as a promising avenue for developing new green lubricants and has implications for industrial and biological applications. Abstract:Natural articular cartilage has ultralow friction even at high squeezing pressure. Biomimicking cartilage with soft materials has been and remains a grand challenge in the fields of materials science and engineering. Inspired by the unique structural features of the articular cartilage, as well as by its remarkable lubrication mechanisms dictated by the properties of the superficial layers, a novel archetype of cartilage‐mimicking bilayer material by robustly entangling thick hydrophilic polyelectrolyte brushes into the subsurface of a stiff hydrogel substrate is developed. The topmost soft polymer layer provides effective aqueous lubrication, whereas the stiffer hydrogel layer used as a substrate delivers the load‐bearing capacity. Their synergy is capable of attaining low friction coefficients (order 0.010) under heavily loaded conditions (order 10 MPa contact pressure) in water environment, a performance incredibly close to that of natural articular cartilage. The bioinspired material can maintain low friction even when subjected to 50k reciprocating cycles under high contact pressure, with almost no wear observed on the sliding track. These findings are theoretically explained and compounded by multiscale simulations used to shed light on the mechanisms responsible for this remarkable performance. This work opens innovative technology routes for developing cartilage‐mimicking ultralow friction soft materials.

Abstract:It was previously proved that the existence of a large amount of hydrogen ions in water-based lubricants can easily lead to a superlubric state; however, it was also shown that these hydrogen ions could cause severe corrosion. As part of a large family of attractive clays, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) possess excellent tribological properties in water-based lubrication systems. In the present work, two different kinds of LDHs are dispersed in polyalkylene glycol (PAG) aqueous solutions, in two distinct forms: ultrathin nanosheets (ULDH-NS) of ca. 60 nm wide and ca. 1 nm thick (single or double layer) and nanoparticles (LDH-NP) of ca. 19.73 nm wide and ca. 8.68 nm thick. We find that the addition of ULDH-NS greatly shortens (as much as 85%) the running-in period prior to reaching the superlubricity regime and increases the ultimate load-bearing capacity by about four times. As compared to the fluid film thickness of the lubricating PAG solution, their ultrathin longitudinal dimension will not impair or influence the fluid film coverage in the contact zone. The analysis of sliding solid surfaces and the atomic force microscope microscale friction test demonstrate that the adsorption of ULDH-NS enables the sliding solid surfaces to be polished and protected because of their relatively weak interlayer interaction and increased adhesion effect. Owing to their superior tribological properties as lubricant additives, ultrathin LDH nanosheets hold great potential for enabling liquid superlubricity in industrial applications in the future.
Macroscale Superlubricity Enabled by the Synergy Effect of Graphene-Oxide Nanoflakes and Ethanediol

Abstract:Graphene has been recognized as an excellent lubrication material owing to its two-dimensional structure and weak interlayer interactions. However, most extant works concerning superlubricity involving graphene oxide have been limited to nanoscale or microscale dimensions (of the order of 1-10 μm). In present work, realization of a robust macroscale superlubricity state (μ = 0.0037), by taking advantage of the synergy effect of graphene-oxide nanoflakes (GONFs) and ethanediol (EDO) at Si3N4-SiO2 interfaces is reported. GONFs have been observed as being adsorbed on friction surfaces, thereby preventing direct contact between surface asperities. The extremely low shear stresses developed between these asperities contribute toward enhanced superlubricity and the resulting super-low wear. Meanwhile, the formation of partial-slip hydrodynamic boundary condition at the GONFs-EDO interface along with the formation of hydrated GONFs-EDO networks through hydrogen-bond interactions contribute to the generation of extremely low shear stresses of the liquid lubricating film. Such macroscale superlubricity provides a new approach toward realization of extremely low friction in GONFs through the synergy effect with liquids.
Synergy of Phospholipid and Hyaluronan Based Super-Lubricated Hydrogels

Abstract:Synthetic hydrogels have been widely studied for the application of artificial joints and other biomedicals. In this work, the synergy of phospholipid and hyaluronan (HA) based super-lubricated hydrogel was synthesized with zwitterionic polymers through free-radical polymerization. The coefficient of friction could reduce down to 0.004, reaching a super-lubricated state, which exhibited a remarkable reduction of friction (approximately 85%) in comparison to that of the original hydrogel in the absence of lipids and HA. The friction reduction was observed under a wide range of sliding velocities, normal loads, and different upper friction materials (including steel, glass, polytetrafluoroethylene, and silicon nitride). The enhanced lubrication performance was mainly attributed to the formation of a robust lipid-based hydration boundary layer at the hydrogel interface with the synergistic lubrication effect between lipids and HA arising from electrostatic interaction. Our approach may provide the potential application for cartilage replacement and artificial joints and help us develop hydrogels with good lubrication characteristics.

Abstract:Slippery lubricant infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) are presented which seek to address the lubricant drainage issue that impairs such surfaces. The strong lubricant retention achieved enables the SLIPS to maintain their slipperiness under high‐speed liquid impact and other dynamic/flow conditions. These findings should widen the practical applications of SLIPS. Slippery lubricant infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have the potential to address daunting challenges such as undesirable surface fouling/biofouling, icing, etc. However, the depletion of lubricants hampers their practical utility. As a solution, here a rational strategy is introduced that operates synergistically in three parts. First, ultra‐high capillary pressure is exploited from the reticular structure of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with sub‐nanometer pores. Second, the need for geometric compatibility is demonstrated; the lubricant chain diameter must be smaller than the MOF pore to enable lubricant chain intercalation. Lastly, the MOF pore chemistry is tailored to achieve a strong intermolecular interaction for any given MOF/lubricant combination. The strategy is investigated through experiments and quantum/molecular simulations, which show that the approach helps lock the intercalated lubricant chains inside the MOF pores and forms a non‐conventional supramolecular structure. The resulting SLIPS (including those with fluorine‐free chemistry) not only show typical low wetting hysteresis, friction, and ice adhesion but are uniquely resistant to more stringent tests such as continuous dripping and sliding of water droplets (up to 50 hrs), repeated impacts of high‐speed water jets (liquid impact Weber number > 4 × 104) and prevent bacterial biofilm formation even in dynamic flow conditions. The findings may widen the practical applications of SLIPS.

MoS 2 Lubricating Film Meets Supramolecular Gel: A Novel Composite Lubricating System for Space Applications

Abstract:In the field of space mechanical lubrication, to improve the reliability and life of space lubrication, solid lubricating film-liquid lubricant composite lubrication has been used in recent years. This lubrication method can improve the durability of sliding friction mating surfaces, reduce equipment wear, and extend the service life of motion mechanisms. However, due to unstable factors such as volatilization and creeping of liquid lubricants in microgravity and ultra-high-vacuum environments, the solid lubricating film wears out after long-term use and produces wear debris and other unfavorable factors. To solve the above problems, this study proposes a novel composite lubrication system constituting a MoS2 film in combination with a supramolecular gel. The tribological performance of this lubrication system establishes an extended service life with a lower wear rate compared to the MoS2 film, regardless of functioning in vacuum or atmospheric conditions. More importantly, the results of the irradiation experiment demonstrate that MoS2-gel exhibits better anticreep performance as compared to MoS2-oil when exposed to atomic oxygen and ultraviolet light for 4 h. The analysis of this composite lubrication mechanism also reveals the formation of a continuous transfer film on the surface of the friction pairs by virtue of the outstanding synergistic effect between the MoS2 film and the gel. MoS2 debris is present in the gel as an additive, and the gel is capable of replenishing automatically once the MoS2 film is depleted. Moreover, the strong anticreep properties of the gel are attributable to the multialkylated cyclopentane oil being trapped by the intricate reassembling of the gelator network. It is firmly believed that this novel MoS2-gel composite lubrication system may have good prospective applications in space and special machinery domains.
