Abstract:The room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of glutathione-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (GSH-Mn-ZnS QDs) was effectively quenched by the addition of Pb(2+). A simple and sensitive RTP sensor for Pb(2+) detection based on the quenching effect was developed. Under the optimal conditions, good linear correlations were obtained for Pb(2+) over a concentration range from 1.0 to 100μg·L(-1), and the detection limit was 0.45μg·L(-1). The established method has been successfully applied for the determination of Pb(2+) in real water samples without complicated sample pretreatment with the recoveries in the range of 95.4%-104.0%.

Abstract:Improving the sensitivity of the fluorescence method is crucial in biosensor fields. In this study, an ultrasensitive and excellent selectivity method was developed for the detection of trace Cu2+ ions using 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped CdSSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs) as a fluorescent probe. Through energy band engineering to optimize the interior inorganic structure and passivate the surface defects, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs in aqueous solution had as high as 70 %. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis revealed the prepared CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs were cubic zinc blende structure with average diameter 7.2 nm. Further, the fluorescence of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs was significantly quenched by the Cu2+ with fast response time through an efficient photo-induced electron transfer (PET) progress. By optimizing the thickness of CdS shell, the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs probe with appropriate CdS shell thickness exhibited excellent linear linearity and sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ ions with limit of detection as low as 0.05 nM. Additionally, ions interference experiments demonstrated the good selectivity of the probe towards Cu2+. Furthermore, this sensing system could also be applied to the measurement of Cu2+ ions in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. This work provided new insights to design and synthesize high-performance QDs-based fluorescence probes with controllable exciton emission behavior for their applications in biosensor and biological fields.

Abstract:MPA stabilized CdSe/ZnS NCs was applied as a fluorescent probe for the sensitive detection of Pb 2+ in water. The microreaction was demonstrated as a facile method for the reproducible synthesis of CdSe/ZnS NCs with a high quantum yield. The good stability of CdSe/ZnS NCs was proved by the significant maintaining of photoluminescent (PL) after the ligand exchange with MPA, and was further demonstrated by the excellent PL property in water solution with various pH values. The cation exchange of Zn with Pb led to the linear quenching of PL with the concentration of Pb 2+ , which provided as an opportunity to apply MPA stabilized CdSe/ZnS NCs as fluorescent probes for Pb 2+ . A facile method by adjustment of QDs concentration was demonstrated as a suitable way to approach different detection limits. The detection limits of 0.03 and 3.3 μM were achieved by setting QDs solutions with the absorbance of the first exciton peak as 0.05 and 0.15, respectively.

Abstract:Water-soluble Mn2+ doped ZnS phosphorescent quantum dots (QDs) were prepared using 3-mercaptopropionic acid and L-cysteine as stabilizer.Phosphorescent emission peak was at 590nm which originated from 4T1-6A1 transition of Mn2+ ions on Zn2+ sites,and were excited by the energy transferred from the excited electron-hole pairs in the ZnS host.Two kinds of QDs were used to detect metal ions.For 3-MPA capped quantum dots,the presence of Cu2+,Mn2+,Fe3+,Co2+,Pb2+,Hg2+ resulted in quenching of phosphorescence while the presence of Cd 2+ resulted in enhancing of phosphorescence.For L-cysteine capped quantum dots,the presence of Cu2+,Mn2+,Fe3+,Co2+,Pb2+,Hg2+ and Cd2+ resulted in quenching of phosphorescence.By measuring the phosphorescence lifetime,we judged the quenching mechanism was mainly dynamic.The conclusions can provide references for both theory and experiment to design selective ion sensors based on phosphorescent quantum dots.

Abstract:The silica-coated ZnS quantum dots (ZnS@SiO 2 QDs) were prepared via a simple and environmentally friendly process. The oil-soluble ZnS cores were successfully transferred to water by the coating of SiO 2 shells. The QDs exhibited satisfying dispersion and luminescent properties in water. The ZnS@SiO 2 QDs were directly used as fluorescent probes for heavy metal ions without the addition of any buffer solution. The luminescence of QDs was extremely sensitive to Pb 2+ ions, and the fluorescence quenching was well described by the Stern–Volmer equation, with an even quenching constant for the Pb 2+ ions samples concentration ranging from 10 −9 to 2.6 × 10 −4 M. An extended hypothesis based on the traditional cation exchange mechanism is proposed to analyze the most significant fluorescence quenching effect by Pb 2+ ions. Studies show that ZnS@SiO 2 QDs have great potentials to be a sensor for Pb 2+ analysis at low to high concentrations.

Abstract:Water-soluble and high luminescent L-glutathione-capped-ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) were applied for ultrasensitive Pb(II) detection. L-glutathione-capped-ZnSe QDs were synthesized by a facile colloid aqueous phase route. It is characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction spectrometry. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, Ultraviolet-visible spectrometry and fluorescence spectrometry. Quantum yields of L-glutathione-capped-ZnSe QDs could reach 50.1% without post irradiation. The fluorescence quenching of the L-glutathione-capped-ZnSe QDs depended on the concentration, pH and reaction time of the Pb(II) solution. The possible mechanism of fluorescence of t-glutathione-capped-ZnSe QDs quenched by Pb(II) was discussed in detail. Under optimal conditions, the quenched fluorescence intensity increased linearly with the concentration of Pb(II) in the range of 1.0 x 10(-8) similar to 8.0 x 10(-7) mol/L The limit of detection for Pb(II) was 0.71 nmol/L. Abstract:Mercury pollution is one of the most serious concerns to human health and the environment. The development of highly sensitive and selective sensors to detect toxic mercury ions has been the focus of scientific research. In this study, L-cysteine-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) have been synthesized and used for the room temperature phosphorescence detection of Hg2+. The phosphorescence of the Mn-doped ZnS QDs could be selectively quenched in the presence of Hg2+. Under optimal conditions, good linear correlations were obtained over the concentration range from 2.0 x 10(-8) mol/L to 4.5 x 10(-6) mol/L with a detection limit of 3.8 x 10(-9) mol/L. Additionally, the long lifetime of the phosphorescence of the Mn-doped ZnS QDs can avoid the interference of the autofluorescence and scattering light of the background, which facilitates their application in real samples. The possible quenching mechanism was examined by UV-vis absorption spectra and Rayleigh scattering spectra.
Ratiometric fluorescence probe based on carbon dots and p-phenylenediamine-derived nanoparticles for the sensitive detection of manganese ions

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescence probe based on carbon quantum dots with 420 nm emission (bCQDs) and a p-phenylenediamine-derived fluorescence probe with 550 nm emission (yprobe) is constructed for the detection of Mn2+. The presence of Mn2+ results in the enhanced absorption band at 400 nm of yprobe, and the fluorescence of yprobe is significantly enhanced based on the chelation-enhanced fluorescence mechanism. The fluorescence of bCQDs is then quenched based on the inner filtration effect. The ratio (I550/I420) linearly increases with the increase of Mn2+ concentration within 2.00 × 10-7-1.50 × 10-6 M, and the limit of detection is 1.76 × 10-9 M. Given the fluorescence color changing from blue to yellow, the visual sensing of Mn2+ is feasible based on bCQDs/yprobe coupled with RGB value analysis. The practicability of the proposed method has been verified in tap water, lake water, and sparkling water beverage, indicating that bCQDs/yprobe has promising application in Mn2+ monitoring.

Abstract:In comparison with traditional organic dyes, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) feature a series of superior luminescence properties, including narrow and symmetric emission, broad excitation and strong absorption, excellent photobleaching-resistance, and good water solubility. The addition of dopants can endows QDs with extra new properties, e.g., further increase the Stokes shift for avoiding self-quenching. Mn-doped ZnS QDs are a very representative example of doped QDs. No harmful elements such as Cd and Hg are involved in such type of bio-friendly QDs. Besides, the Mn2+ dopant further adds QDs with excellent room temperature phosphorescence. Phosphorescent detection can effectively eliminate the interference of biological background fluorescence, thus Mn-doped ZnS QDs can be widely used in phosphorescent bioanalysis. In this paper, the recent progress of room temperature phosphorescence analysis with Mn-doped ZnS QDs was reviewed. The emphasis was placed on the several stimulative sensing design strategies, including the luminescence mechanism, ion probes, detection of small molecules and biomacromolecules.

Abstract:In the present study, a novel ratiometric fluorescence probe based on dual-emitting Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (Mn:ZnS QDs) was established for detection of Pb2+ and methyl parathion (MP). The dual-emitting Mn:ZnS QDs was aqueous synthesised in one pot and played as a ratiometric fluorescence probe for the detection of Pb2+ with high sensitivity. The fluorescence intensity ratio (F450nm/F585nm) of the probe against the concentration of Pb2+ showed a good linear relationship from 10 nM to 60 nM with a detection limit of 0.5 nM. Furthermore, the Mn:ZnS QDs/Pb2+ system was established as a turn-on fluorescence sensing system to quantitative measure the MP concentration. The fluorescence intensity at 450 nm exhibited a good linear relationship in the MP concentration range from 0.19 to 0.95 μM with a detection limit of about 0.02 μM. It also had a satisfying performance in fruit and environmental water samples. Therefore, the prepared Mn:ZnS QDs-based sensor has been established as a ratiometric fluorescence probe and turn-on method for quantitative detection of lead ion and MP, respectively.

Abstract:Water-soluble Mn ∶ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized with glutathione (GSH) as a stabilizer.Cu2+ coordinated with the carboxyl group of GSH on the surface of Mn ∶ZnS QDs and blocked the charge transfer of Mn ∶ZnS QDs,which resulted in apparent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) quenching.Because the chelation ability of Cu2+ with pyrophosphate (PPi) was stronger than with carboxyl groups,the RTP intensity of Mn ∶ZnS QD gradually recovered when PPi was introduced to the Mn ∶ZnS Quantum Dots/Cu2+ system.Thus a novel " off-on" roomtemperature phosphorescence probe for the determination of PPi was developed based on Mn ∶ZnS Quantum Dots/Cu2+ system.A linear range 5.0× 10-s to 1.0× 10-4 mol·L-1 for PPi was obtained with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.0× 10-8 mol· L-1.The present novel assay was very simple and sensitive.Our results reveal that the proposed RTP probe can be applied for the determination of PPi in real water samples.

Abstract:Doping in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is a promising approach for introducing unique properties compared to pure QDs. Although manganese (Mn) ion-doped wide band gap QDs have been widely studied, the optical properties of Mn-doped narrow band gap semiconductors are not well understood. Here, we report the synthesis of oil-soluble Mn-doped lead sulfide (PbS) QDs of identical size with different Mn contents. Compared to pure PbS QDs, the photoluminescence (PL) peak positions of Mn-doped PbS QDs exhibit a significant red-shift, resulting in a larger Stokes shift. The large Stokes shift of Mn-doped QDs is due to the electronic state of Mn ions, in which the photogenerated electron is transferred to the energy states of Mn ions and then recombined with holes. Mn-doped PbS QDs exhibit a faster temperature-dependent PL response compared to pure PbS QDs, demonstrating that the Mn-doped PbS QDs are promising alternatives for use as thermal sensors.

Abstract:Herein, the facile method with high selectivity for phosphate ion (Pi) sensing using novel Type-II core/shell Mn: ZnTe/ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) was reported. This was the first time that Mn: ZnTe/ZnSe QDs with highlighted optical properties were used for sensing. The water-soluble Mn: ZnTe/ZnSe QDs with a high quantum yield of 7% were synthesized by aqueous synthetic method. Compared with traditional ZnSe QDs or Mn: ZnSe QDs, the smaller effective band gap, longer wavelength and lower ionization potential (high valence band edge) for effective hole localization made Type-II core/shell Mn: ZnTe/ZnSe QDs to be stable and had high photoluminescence (PL). Only Mg(2+) was found to be able to enhance Mn: ZnTe/ZnSe QDs PL selectively. The mechanism of fluorescence enhancement was attributed to the passivated surface nonradiative relaxation centers of Mn: ZnTe/ZnSe QDs. In the presence of Pi anion, the PL intensity got quenched due to the aggregation species of QDs via electrostatic attraction between Pi and Mg(2+) on the surface of Mn: ZnTe/ZnSe QDs. Therefore, the quenching effect can be used to detect Pi selectively. The PL was observed to be linearly proportional to the Pi analyte concentration in the range from 0.67 to 50.0 μmol/L, with a detection limit of 0.2μ mol/L (S/N=3). The novel "on-off" fluorescence nanosensor for Pi detection was sensitive and convenient in the real analysis application. The reported analytical method of Mn: ZnTe/ZnSe QDs is highly sensitive and selective, which can corroborate the extension of its usages in chemo/ biosensing and bioimaging.
Use of Water-Soluble PbS Quantum Dots As Fluorescent Probe in Sensing Copper(ii)

Abstract:In this paper, we report a new facile method for the synthesis of water-soluble PbS quantum dots (QDs), using dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) as a stabilizer. The prepared QDs were characterized by optical techniques and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Next, these water-soluble luminescent PbS QDs were further used to detect copper (II). The obtained experimental results show that the fluorescence of the PbS QDs could be markedly quenched by Cu(II) whereas approximate concentrations of other physiologically relevant cations, such as Zn(II), Ca(II), Mg(II), Mn(II), Na(I) and K(I) etc., almost did not interfere with the fluorescence quenching progress of copper ions. Based on this, a simple and rapid method for Cu(II) determination was developed. Under optimal conditions, the response was linearly proportional to the copper(II) concentration in the range of 1 to 11.5x10(-8) mol.L-1, with a correlation coefficient of 0.995. Hence, aqueous DHLA-stabilized PbS QDs may be a promising fluorescent probe in sensing copper(II) selectively.
One-pot Synthesis of Highly Luminescent and Color-Tunable Water-Soluble Mn:ZnSe/ZnS Core/shell Quantum Dots by Microwave-Assisted Method

Abstract:In this paper, microwave-assisted method was used for rapid synthesis of highly luminescent Mn-doped ZnSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals in aqueous phase. A series of nanocrystals with different size was prepared in 1 h under proper condition. The as-prepared Mn-doped ZnSe/ZnS QDs exhibit the emission in the range of 565–602 nm and the highest photoluminescence quantum yield reached up to 36.3% under the optimal reaction condition. The optical properties and structure of the Mn:ZnSe/ZnS QDs have been characterized by PL spectroscopy, UV–Vis, TEM, XRD and XPS. The effects of various experimental variables, including the reaction pressure, the pH value of reaction solution, the ratio of Zn to ligand (MPA), and the post-treatment on the optical properties of the Mn:ZnSe/ZnS QDs were investigated systematically. The as-prepared MPA coated Mn-doped ZnSe/ZnS colloidal nanoparticles was utilized to ultrasensitively and selectively detect Hg2+ ions in water, the result shows that the QD-based metal ions sensor possesses high sensitivity and selectivity, and could be applied for the quantification analysis of Hg2+ ions in water.

Abstract:Photoluminescence enhancement provides an effective way to improve the performance of quantum dots. In this study, lead(II) determination was demonstrated based on phosphorescence enhancement using 1-thioglycerol-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots. Under the optimized conditions, good linear correlations were obtained for Pb 2+ from 10.00 to 5000 nM and 0.05000 to 100.0 mM with correlation coefficients of 0.9997 and 0.9979 and a detection limit of 2.56 nM. The method demonstrates good linearity and selectivity, suitable sensitivity, easy operation, and the determination of Pb 2+ in Chinese herbal medicine.

Abstract:In this study, a novel green fluorescent probe material, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method using walnut green skin as a carbon source and acetamide-glycolic acid deep eutectic solvent (AGADES) as a modifier. By covalent coupling, the amide chromophore in AGADES is designed to cover the surface of walnut green skin carbon quantum dots (W-CQDs), forming a fluorescence energy resonance effect and improving the fluorescence performance of the carbon quantum dots. The prepared N-CQDs have a uniform particle size distribution, and the fluorescence quantum efficiency has increased from 12.5% to 32.5%. Within the concentration range of 0.01~1000 μmol/L of Pb2+, the linear detection limit is 1.55 nmol/L, which can meet the trace detection of Pb2+ in the water environment, and the recycling rate reaches 97%. This method has been successfully applied to the fluorescence detection and reuse of Pb2+ in actual water bodies, providing new ideas and methods for the detection of heavy metal ions in environmental water.
A simple and rapid fluorescent approach for Pb<SUP>2+</SUP> determination and application in water samples and living cells

Abstract:A novel selective fluorescent chemosensor, thiosemicarbazide-appended naphthalimide derivative (TND), has been designed and synthesized, which exhibited good selectivity and sensibility for Pb2+ in CH3CN:H2O (1:1) solution. The probe TND showed obvious color changes under UV light of 365 nm and displayed turn-on fluorescence response with Pb2+ added. The binding mode of TND with Pb2+ was found to be 1:1 based on the Job's plot analysis. The detection limit of Pb2+ was 4.7 nM, which is far below the allowable concentration determined by WHO in drinking water. Moreover, the fortified recoveries of Pb2+ were from 100.54% to 113.68% in water samples. TND is also applied for fluorescence imaging of Pb2+ in lysosomes of human stromal cell line (HSC). This study indicated that TND would be a potential sensor detecting Pb2+ in real sample. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A new room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) mercury ions sensor has been developed based on cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (CTAB/Mn-ZnS QDs) and label-free thymine (T)-rich aptamer. The formed T-Hg2+-T dsDNA can linearly quench the RTP of Mn-ZnS QDs through electron transfer and aggregation effect, and give a detection limit of 1.5 nM.
