Abstract:In this article, we theoretically study the optical properties of graphene metasurfaces consisting of layered graphene ribbons and their potential applications as multifunctional optical devices in the long-wavelength infrared region. By engineering the plasmonic resonance in graphene ribbons with different widths, the phase of reflected light can be tuned over a range of nearly 2π, while the reflectivity is kept relatively high at the target frequencies. Owing to the weak light–graphene interaction in the off-resonance region, independent control of the reflected light can be achieved by stacking multiple layers of graphene ribbons. Since the interlayer coupling between the ribbons is negligible, we have developed a transmission-line-based uncoupled model as a physical interpretation of the stacked metasurface. Abstract:As novel planar structures, the metasurfaces exhibit the unprecedented capability to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, metasurface is designed to apply to metalens, holography, nanoprinting display, encryption, and so on. It is very interesting and meaningful work to integrate bifocal metalens and nanoprinting images into a single metasurface. A method is proposed to combine propagation phase and geometric phase, as well as Malus's law to realize the function of the bifocal metalens and clear nanoprinting display in the near field which can be observed at a certain polarization. This original design expands the functional integration of metasurface and improves applications in image displays, optical storage, augmented reality, virtual reality, and many other related fields.

Abstract:There are significant challenges to design acoustic metasurface in the ultrasonic regime where the wavelength is small. Moreover, the routine design rule based on effective medium approximation is invalid for underwater ultrasound. Our recent development of metasurface provides a great opportunity to solve above-mentioned challenges and the results demonstrate the great potential to apply this metasurface in the field of ultrasonic focusing. Here, we presented a focusing metasurface lens with extreme simplicity (slot structure) and ultra-compact size (deep-subwavelength spacing and thickness). Instead of tuning the acoustic path length individually, we exploited the strong wave couplings between the deep-subwavelength-spaced units for the phase modulation. A microscopic coupled-wave theory was used to predict the phase profile, based on which the metasurface lens for ultrasonic focusing was optimized. Particularly, broadband focusing was also exhibited due to the non-resonant arrangement of the proposed metasurface lens. The numerical and experimental results agreed well with each other, effectively validating the feasibility of the proposed metasurface lens. The proposed approach provides a feasible avenue for the design of simple and ultra-compact ultrasonic lenses that would be suitable in various fields of ultrasonics.

Abstract:Focusing of ultrasonic waves in water plays an important role in various scenarios ranging from biomedical imaging to nondestructive testing. Acoustic metasurfaces have been largely explored for acoustic focusing, but they are generally narrowband and mainly implemented for airborne sound because of their structural complexity. Nevertheless, our previous development of metasurfaces provides a great opportunity to solve the challenges. Here, we present numerically and experimentally the broadband focusing of ultrasonic waves in water with a metasurface lens consisting of an array of deep-subwavelength sized and spaced slots. The slot widths of the metasurface are optimized based on microscopic coupled-wave theory. Due to the non-resonant arrangement, the focusing effect is demonstrated over a broad band of frequencies. The metasurface lens with simplicity and an ultra-compact size provides a feasible means for the design of thin and lightweight ultrasonic devices and is suitable for practical applications in biomedical and industrial fields.

Abstract:Acoustic focusing has wide applications in many domains including non-destructive evaluation, medical diagnosis and particle manipulation. In the past decades, due to their outstanding ca-pacity of wave manipulation, acoustic metasurfaces (AMSs) based on various structures, such as coiling-up space structures, Helmholtz-resonator-like structures and membrane-type structures, have been proposed to achieve different functionalities including acoustic focusing. However, given their complex geometries and narrow channels, these structures inevitably cause fabrica-tion difficulties and limit energy transmission efficiency due to the thermoviscous loss. To overcome these drawbacks, a double layered acoustic grating (DLAG) is proposed in the paper to focus acoustic waves with high energy transmission efficiency. The DLAG consists of two layers of rigid panels with periodically perforated subwavelength slits on each layer. The surface coupling approach (SCA) which was proposed to predict the sound radiation in multiple connected spaces is employed to predict acoustic field through the DLAG. The widths of the slits and the cavity between the two layers of the DLAG can be optimized to converge the acoustic energy of an incident plane wave into a predefined focusing region, while the slits' spacing and the thickness of the DLAG are set to be a fraction of wavelength. Using a 3D printed DLAG with the optimized geometrical size, the acoustic focusing was validated experimentally, which show very good agreements with the prediction from the SCA.
Novel tunable graphene-based metasurface of metalens

Abstract:We propose a graphene-based metasurface of metalens, which consists of a ring structure composed of double oblique slits and four semicircular grooves. As the thickness of the base layer increases with the radius, the propagation length shows a decreasing trend and the effective refractive index is the opposite. Under the action of the incident wave at 632.8 nm, the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) generated in the double oblique slits interfere with the semicircular grooves at different positions to form different phase delays. SPPs propagate to a distant focus, and appear the focusing phenomenon in space, with the focal length and full height at half maximum reaching 2.7 mu m and 284 nm, respectively. At the same time, the focusing intensity can be flexibly adjusted by changing the graphene Fermi level. Finally, the designed metalens was used for lithography research, and the contrast ratio was 0.98. The research of this metalens has been widely used in energy harvesting, imaging and sensing.
Dynamically Switchable Metasurfaces Based on Graphene and Origami

Abstract:Metasurfaces, two-dimensional metamaterials consisting of engineered structures, have recently emerged as an exciting “flat” platform to manipulate electromagnetic waves in a prescribed manner. The tunability and reconfigurability are urgently needed for of metasurfaces in order to perform distinctive functionalities and miniaturize the device footprint. In this talk, I will first discuss tunable metasurfaces based on graphene nanoribbons for infrared beam steering. It is shown that the phase of the infrared light reflected from a simple graphene ribbon metasurface can span over almost the entire 2π range by changing the width of the graphene ribbons, while the amplitude of the reflection can be maintained at high values without significant variations. We successfully realize anomalous reflection, reflective focusing lenses, and non-diffracting Airy beams based on graphene metasurfaces, which are readily tunable by changing the Fermi energy of graphene. In the second part of my talk, I will discuss origami-based, dual-band chiral metasurfaces at microwave frequencies. The flexibility by folding the metasurface provides another degree of freedom for geometry control in the third dimension, which induces strong chirality from the initial, 2D achiral structure. The experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations and analyses. These findings open up a new paradigm of lightweight, multifunctional, and tunable devices for adaptive control over electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:We present a graphene-based metasurface that can be actively tuned between different regimes of operation, such as anomalous beam steering and focusing, cloaking and illusion optics, by applying electrostatic gating without modifying the geometry of the metasurface. The metasurface is designed by placing graphene nano-ribbons (GNRs) on a dielectric cavity resonator, where interplay between geometric plasmon resonances in the ribbons and Fabry-Perot resonances in the cavity is used to achieve 2$\pi$ phase shift. As a proof of the concept, we demonstrate that wavefront of the field reflected from a triangular bump covered by the metasurface can be tuned by applying electric bias so as to resemble that of bare plane and of a spherical object. Moreover, reflective focusing and change of the reflection direction for the above-mentioned cases are also shown.

Abstract:Frequency-controlled metasurfaces have attracted significant attention for a variety of applications, such as radar imaging and 5G communication, owing to their small size and low cost. However, due to the inherent material dispersion of these devices, bandwidth is an essential requirement for their controlling their wavefront. To evaluate the broadband performance of frequency-controlled metasurface focusing systems, a multiresonant model is used to achieve controlled manipulation of frequency-splitting and focusing reflective metasurface; further, the transition from broadband disorder scattering to user-desired reflection is obtained. It is shown that the focusing position can be controlled by the careful design of each unit cell. As a proof of concept, a broadband focusing metasurface with frequency-splitting effect over the entire X band, i.e., 8-12 GHz, is designed and experimentally demonstrated, which can control the position of focal spots with different wavelengths by its achromatic and reflective characteristics. It is believed that the proposed metasurface will provide useful insights for wavefront manipulation in broadband and chromatically corrected imaging systems.
Design of Real-Time Tunable-Focus Active Metasurfaces

Abstract:A design of real-time tunable-focus reconfigurable active metasurfaces is proposed in this paper. With the element space of 16 mm (0.458 lambda), a 1-bit real-time reconfigurable active metasurface element is successfully designed to work at 8.595 GHz. From 7.71 GHz to 9.43 GHz, the element realized a 1-bit phase shift with a relative bandwidth of 20% within 180 degrees +/- 30 degrees. Moreover, a negligible cross polarization is obtained and the amplitude loss is less than 0.8 dB for two states. Furthermore, the reflective metasurface is designed with an aperture size of 512mmx512mm (32x32) and aperture efficiency of 43.7% for the tunable beam focusing. By effectively designing the states of each element on the metasurface array, a single-beam focusing on theta = 0 degrees and dual-beam focusing on theta = +/- 15 degrees are achieved, respectively. Finally, the full wave simulation is performed to demonstrate to the functionalities and effects of the proposed metasurfaces, whose results are in good agreement with the theoretical design.

Abstract:We propose a dual-band coding metasurface capable of manipulating the near-filed behaviors of electromagnetic (EM) waves independently in two discrete frequency bands. As a proof of concept, we show that the programmable coding metasurface can focus the incidence into spots with distinct focal distances at two operating frequencies. Full-wave simulations are performed to validate the design principle and the dynamic focusing functionality. The proposed metasurface may be utilized to improve the information capacities, which may have potential applications in radar and wireless communication systems.

Abstract:A reflection metasurface, composed of metallic annular rings, is presented for realizing high-efficient and polarization-independent focusing. By varying the inner and outer radii of the isotropic rings, we can achieve a full modulation on the phase from -180 degrees to 180 degrees. By properly arranging the annular rings, we design gradient metasurfaces for focusing without polarization sensitivity by finite element method simulations and further demonstrate the focusing effect with high-efficient and polarization-independent performance experimentally in the microwave domain. In addition, the structure is also proved applicable in the optical domain by simulations. This work expands the capabilities of metasurfaces to focusing and imaging applications without polarization limitations. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.
Graphene-based Terahertz Metasurface with Tunable Spectrum Splitting

Abstract:We design a tunable terahertz metasurface, which consists of two different trapezoid graphene ribbons patterned in opposite directions on a gold film, separated by a thin dielectric spacer. The two kinds of graphene ribbons can cover a nearly 2π phase shift with high reflection efficiency in different spectral regions so that the metasurface can reflect different frequency waves to totally different directions. By changing the Fermi level of the graphene ribbons, the response frequency of the proposed metasurface can be adjusted, and as a result, tunable spectrum splitting can be realized. The present metasurface provides a powerful way to control terahertz waves and has potential applications in wide-angle beam splitters.

Abstract:A twisted metasurface system is proposed for dynamic electromagnetic wave focusing, enabling precise beam steering via mutual rotation of transmissive and reflective layers. This design achieves wide‐angle control in both elevation and azimuth, with experimental results closely matching theoretical predictions. The method significantly reduces system complexity and power consumption, offering a scalable solution for satellite communication, sensing, and high‐resolution imaging. Dynamic focusing of electromagnetic (EM) waves is a cornerstone in various applications, encompassing aerospace communication, sensing, and high‐resolution imaging. Recently, the advent of intelligent metasurfaces, hailed as the next evolutionary step, has revolutionized self‐adaptive functionalities. However, their extensive embeddings of active components pose a great challenge associated with escalated costs, heightened power consumption, and increased complexity, thus hindering large‐scale implementation. Here, a cost‐effective approach for dynamic EM focusing utilizing a twisted metasurface is introduced, which integrates a transmissive layer with a reflective layer in a cascade fashion. This innovative design leverages the mutual rotation between two layers to enable the precise manipulation of beam propagation and scanning area, allowing for the flexible localization of the focal point across a wide range, spanning −44.17° to 44.17° in elevation and 0° to 360° in azimuth. This capability is underpinned by the strategic fusion of multiple phase profiles, including gradient and Gaussian phase. In the experiment, a goal‐oriented system is built up whose outcomes demonstrate a striking alignment with the simulated results, achieving a correlation coefficient of 96.7%. This work presents a streamlined pathway toward dynamic EM focusing and the related applications constrained by space and power limitations.

Abstract:A general strategy is presented for bi‐layer reflection‐transmission integrated dual‐mode metasurfaces with flexible bandwidth control. The proposed strategy enlightened by introducing cutting hole in ground, which not only acts as a filter, but also has an eloquent role for bandwidth control. Independent geometric phase shift for integrated broadband co‐polarized reflection and transmission is achieved with simple technique and compact structure. A general strategy for designing bi‐layer reflection‐transmission integrated dual‐mode metasurfaces is presented with flexible bandwidth control. The design of such metasurfaces is enlightened by introducing a cutting hole in the ground plane, which not only acts as a filter for reflection and transmission but also has an eloquent role for bandwidth control. For proof of concept, a bi‐layer metasurface consisting of split ring resonators (SRRs) is designed on the top side and I‐shaped resonators on both sides. The proper adjustment of ground cut/hole shifts the two co‐polarized resonances (initial resonances of the SRRs) close to each other, and in addition, converts wideband cross‐polarized reflection (in between the two initial co‐polarized resonances of SRR) to co‐polarized reflection. This results in a broadband response by shifting two co‐polarized resonances close to each other and converting cross‐polarized reflection into co‐polarized reflection. It is demonstrated that a simple SRR can be responsible for broadband (7.9–12 GHz) reflection while an I‐shaped structure is used for transmission with central frequency at 17.58 GHz with independent phase controls. To endorse the proposed strategy, a metasurface prototype is fabricated and tested for the generation of vortex beams and focusing.

Abstract:Graphene-based metasurfaces have emerged as promising photoelectric devices for dynamically controlling the polarization and wavefront of electromagnetic waves. A series of novel graphene-based metasurfaces consisting of split-ring resonators are proposed and researched. A dynamically tunable broadband converter of polarization states composed of periodically patterned graphene split-rings for linearly polarized waves is achieved in terahertz regime. By designing different geometrical parameters, the resonators indicate 2π of smooth phase modulation in a broadband frequency regime. Based on the phase profile design, a polarization beam splitter and a transmission-type focusing metasurface in a broadband frequency regime are both demonstrated successfully. Furthermore, the efficiency of these metasurfaces is dynamically tunable by modulating the gate voltage to change the Fermi energy (Ef) of graphene. This work may offer a potentially effective method to instruct the design of tunable polarization converter and wavefront-controlling devices.

Abstract:Due to the physically unrestricted set of orthogonally helical modes of orbital angular momentum (OAM), it has contributed significantly to wireless communication and information capacity. Meanwhile, focusing has important applications in fields such as super-resolution microscopic imaging and optical integration. Plasmonic metasurfaces have a powerful ability to modulate electromagnetic (EM) waves, and diversified functionalities in them are strongly desired. As of today, few plasmonic metasurfaces are reported which have multi-function in a single flat device. Herein, by fine-tuning the geometric dimensions and orientation angle of the meta-atom, the geometric phase is combined with the propagation phase to produce an independent phase response when left-handed circular polarization (LCP) and right-handed circular polarization (RCP) waves illuminate the metasurface. This paper presents three plasmonic metasurfaces, and each of them implements multiple functions on a single plasmonic metasurface. Firstly, normal reflection of OAM and a focused beam is achieved. Secondly, we realize anomalous reflection of OAM by convolving a gradient sequence and implement computational focusing at any point. Finally, addition theorem is adopted to implement the above two functions, and this design contains normal and inclined output beams. Our work provides novel approaches for the integration of multifunctional EM modulation.
Dual-Stimulus Control for Ultra-Wideband and Multidimensional Modulation in Terahertz Metasurfaces Comprising Graphene and Metal Halide Perovskites

Abstract:Perovskites and graphene are receiving a meteoric rise in popularity in the field of active photonics because they exhibit excellent optoelectronic properties for dynamic manipulation of light-matter interactions. However, challenges still exist, such as the instability of perovskites under ambient conditions and the low Fermi level of graphene in experiments. These shortcomings limit the scope of applications when they are used alone in advanced optical devices. However, the combination of graphene and perovskites is still a promising route for efficient control of light-matter interactions. Here, we report a dual-optoelectronic metadevice fabricated by integrating terahertz metasurfaces with a sandwich complex composed of graphene, polyimide, and perovskites for ultra-wideband and multidimensional manipulation of higher-order Fano resonances. Owing to the photogenerated carriers and electrostatic doping effect, the dual optoelectronic metadevice showed different manipulation behavior at thermal imbalance (electrostatic doping state of the system). The modulation depth of the transmission amplitude reached 200%, the total resonant frequency shift was 800 GHz, and the tunable range of the resonant frequency was 68.8%. In addition, modulation of the maximum phase reached 346°. This work will inspire a new generation of metasurface-based optical devices that combine two active materials.

Graphene-enabled chiral metasurface for terahertz wavefront manipulation and multiplexing holographic imaging

Abstract:The ability of metasurfaces to simultaneously manipulate both the spin and phase of circularly polarized (CP) incident waves has attracted considerable attention from researchers. Here, we propose a reconfigurable double circular split rings (DCSRs) chiral metasurface. By introducing graphene and changing the Fermi level of graphene, dynamic circular dichroism (CD) can be achieved. The calculation results show that when the Fermi level of graphene is increased from 0.1 eV to 1 eV, the CD decreases from 0.72 to 0.09 at 0.839 THz, which provides a CD-tunable spin-controlled method. In addition, based on the graphene-enabled DCSRs, we design two metasurface arrays combining Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase and coding metasurface theory to realize terahertz CP wave switchable focusing and spin-controlled multi-pencil beam generation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of reflective holography for multiplexing circularly polarized waves. The results of this paper are expected to play a significant role in the future terahertz wireless communication system, multi-spectral imaging, and information encryption fields.

Abstract:In response to the issue of traditional near-field focusing metasurfaces having a single working frequency band and limited focusing functionality, this paper proposes a four-channel focusing metasurface based on frequency-polarization multiplexing. Utilizing the principles of anisotropy and metasurface resonant phase, a metasurface unit composed of two sets of orthogonal resonators was designed. The designed units have independent transmission amplitude and phase at 15 GHz and 23 GHz, with the transmission phase of the two sets of resonators encoded in 2-bit and 1-bit based on phase differences of 90° and 180°, respectively. Based on the units, combined with the focusing principle of metasurface lenses and the principle of phase superposition, a four-channel near-field focusing metasurface lens was designed. The lens is composed of 20×20 units, measuring 200×200 mm 2 . Numerical simulations and experimental results demonstrate that the designed metasurface lens achieves single-point and dual-points focusing at 15 GHz under x - and y -polarized wave incidence, with the focus at the z =70 mm plane and a maximum focusing efficiency of 48.5%. At 23 GHz under x - and y -polarized wave incidence, metasurface lens focuses electromagnetic waves at different positions, with the focus at the z =80 mm plane and a maximum focusing efficiency of 27.8%. The metasurface lens designed by this method is expected to find applications in fields such as Medical Sensing, Microwave Imaging, and Integrated Optics.
