Abstract:The life time of offshore wind farm is around 20 years. After that, the whole farm should be decommissioned which is also one of the main factors that contribute to the high investment. In order to make a cost-effective wind farm, a novel optimization method for decommission is addressed in this paper. Instead of abandoning the foundations after the wind farm is running out of its life cycle, the proposed method can make good use of the existing facilities so that the cost of energy (COE) can be reduced. The results show that 12.93% reduction of COE can be realized by using the proposed method.

Abstract:Since the first offshore wind farm (OWF) was raised, with a total installed capacity of 32.4 GW by the end of 2020, the offshore wind power industry has experienced rapid development in the past two decades. In the next years, the decommissioning of OWFs needs to be paid attention in the countries where the offshore wind power is developed much early. In order to tap the residual value of decommissioned OWFs and reduce the damage to the ocean environment, this paper focuses on the repowering planning of OWFs, and proposes a repowering strategy considering the health conditions of wind turbines (WTs). Firstly, an evaluation method based on dynamic degradation is proposed, considering the influence of marine meteorological factors and the interaction between components on the health conditions of offshore WTs. An optimum decommissioning scheme is formulated according to the evaluation results. Aiming at the optimal levelized cost of energy (LCOE), the repowering strategy of a decommissioned OWF is optimized. Based on the case study of a real OWF in China, the results show that the repowering strategy proposed in this paper effectively reduces the LCOE and improves the repowering efficiency of the OWF, which can provide reference for the future decommissioning of OWFs.

Combined Optimization for Offshore Wind Turbine Micro Siting

Abstract:In order to minimize the wake loss, wind turbines (WT) should be separated with large intervening spaces. However, this will incur an increase in the capital expenditure on electrical systems and even in the operation and maintenance costs. In order to realize a cost-effective wind farm, an integrated optimization method in which the positions of the WTs and offshore substations (OS) and the cable connection configuration are optimized simultaneously is proposed in this paper. Since the optimization variables are both continuous and discrete, the mixed integer particle swarm optimization (MIPSO) algorithm is adopted to minimize the levelized production cost (LPC) of the wind farm. Simulation results are given for validating the proposed approach and comparison is made with results obtained using other methods. It is found that the proposed method can reduce the levelized production cost (LPC) by 5.00% and increase the energy yields by 3.82% compared with the Norwegian centre for offshore wind energy (NORCOWE) reference wind farm layout. This is better than the traditional method which only achieves a 1.45% LPC reduction although it increases the energy yields by 3.95%. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this research, an optimization method for offshore wind farm layout design is proposed. With the purpose of maximizing the energy production of the wind farm, the wind turbine (WT) positions are optimized. Due to the limitations of seabed conditions, marine traffic limitations or shipwrecks, etc., the WTs are expected to be placed outside specific areas. Based on this fact, a restriction zone concept is proposed in this paper and implemented with the penalty function method. In order to find a feasible solution, a recent proposed stochastic algorithm, particle swarm optimization algorithm with multiple adaptive methods (PSO-MAM) is adopted. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method can find a layout which outperforms a baseline layout of a reference wind farm (RWF) by increasing the energy yield by 3.84%.

Abstract:Wind turbines in an offshore wind farm usually operate individually to maximize the power output for each turbine. However, this is not an optimal configuration for a wind farm with inner wake interactions, as they not only affect the overall power output but also introduce extra fatigue on the turbine structures. Recently, wind farm level coordinated control, such as coordinated yaw and axial-induction control, has been regarded as a promising solution to improve the overall performance of a wind farm. In this work, an offshore wind farm wake redirection control scheme is proposed for both power maximization and load reduction, which is achieved by a multi-objective optimization process. In particular, a fatigue assessment model is established for fast fatigue evaluation under yaw-misalignment and wake effects based on a large number of aero-elastic simulations. It is accomplished by calculating the Damage Equivalent Loads (DELs) on the tower and the blade with the rain-flow counting method. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the medium-fidelity wind farm simulation code WFSim is used in the optimization and analysis process. Numerical results have shown that the overall power output can be increased by up to 12.5%, while the fatigue loads of critical structures are reduced by up to 15.3% with the proposed wind farm control strategy. In contrast, a power-only optimization design may lead to increased fatigue loads.

Abstract:Wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) has become a significant approach to enhancing the efficiency of wind energy utilization. However, load also represents a critical factor that must be considered during optimization. To enhance power generation while controlling loads within limitations, an innovative load-constrained layout optimization method that employs a surrogate model based on artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms was proposed. This paper verified the accuracy of the surrogate model and then conducted layout optimizations on a single and a full wind condition case to assess the proposed method. The results indicated that the mean absolute percentage errors of load channels can meet the precision requirements for WFLO. A comparison of layout optimization results between the method proposed in this paper and the traditional method showed that in the single-wind-condition case, the method proposed in this paper reduced the maximum load by 5.64 % compared to the traditional method, with nearly identical power output; in the full-wind-condition case, the reduction of maximum load was 1.70 %, while only sacrificing the annual power generation by 0.10 %. This study provides a load-constrained WFLO method, promising to effectively ensure the lifespan of wind turbines while increasing power generation and offering significant engineering value.

Abstract:Offshore wind farm has drawn more and more attention recently due to its higher energy capacity and more freedom to occupy area. However, the investment is higher. In order to make a cost-effective wind farm, the wind farm layout should be optimized. The wake effect is one of the dominant factors leading to energy losses. It is expected that the optimized placement of wind turbines (WT) over a large sea area can lead to the best tradeoff between energy yields and capital investment. This paper proposes a novel way to position offshore WTs for a regular shaped wind farm. In addition to optimizing the direction of wind farm placement and the spacing between WTs, the control strategy's impact on energy yields is also discussed. Since the problem is nonconvex and lots of optimization variables are involved, an evolutionary algorithm, the particle swarm optimization algorithm, is adopted to find the solution. In order to increase the probability of finding the global optimal solution, the adaptive parameter control strategy is utilized. Simulation results are given to verify the proposed approach and comparison is made with results obtained using other methods.

Abstract:Traditional methods for micro-siting of wind farms usually assume that each turbine is controlled to obtain its individual maximum power generation. However, it is now common practice to implement farm level control actions during the daily operations in order to improve the economic profit of an entire wind plant. This study is then proposed to investigate the wind farm layout optimization to achieve the minimum cost per unit of energy (CoE), when the farm level control operations, the coordination of turbine cooperations (CTC), is considered preliminary farm planning stage. It is found that, by optimizing the turbine number and layout with CTC involved, the efficiency of a wind farm can be further improved. A single-objective optimization problem is firstly established by modelling all aforementioned factors of interest. Subsequently, a hybrid optimization algorithm is proposed, with a greedy algorithm to optimize the turbine number and a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to refine the turbine layout scheme. Eventually, extensive simulation studies with various scenarios are provided to substantiate the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Based on particle swarm optimization (PSO), an optimization platform for offshore wind farm electrical system (OWFES) is proposed in this paper, where the main components of an offshore wind farm and key technical constraints are considered as input parameters. The offshore wind farm electrical system is optimized in accordance with initial investment by considering three aspects: the number and siting of offshore substations (OS), the cable connection layout of both collection system (CS) and transmission system (TS) as well as the selection of electrical components in terms of voltage level and capacity. Because hundreds of optimization variables, continuous or discrete, are involved in the problem, a mix integer PSO (MIPSO) is required to obtain the solution. The fuzzy C-means clustering (FCM) algorithm is used to partition the wind farm into several sub regions. The collection system layout in each sub region as well as the connection scheme between offshore substations are optimized by an adaptive PSO-minimum spanning tree algorithm (APSO-MST) which has been proposed in a previous work. The simulation results show that the proposed optimization platform can find an optimized layout that save 3.01% total cost compared with the industrial layout, and can be a useful tool for OWFES design and evaluation. Abstract:The wind power industry has received a lot of attention in recent years due to its environmental friendliness. Spare parts management is an important part of wind power industry, it is crucial due to the ability to establish a balance between system uptime and maintenance costs, thereby affecting the overall performance of a wind farm. Adopting an optimal policy for a single component in a system with multiple components cannot ensure that the income will be maximized. Therefore, we establish an optimization model to maximize the wind farm's availability within a budgetary constraint. We propose employing a convex optimization strategy by carefully analyzing and transforming the system model. The methodology utilizes the barrier interior point method. Comparative analysis with Matlab-implemented PSO demonstrates that our proposed method achieves an improved inventory strategy in less time.

Abstract:In the past, offshore wind farms commonly had a large wind turbine distance to avoid power loss induced by the wake effects. For this reason, the operational offshore wind farms with such a large wind turbine distance are relatively low in capacity density and have a great potential to include more wind turbines. This paper aims to provide a suitable renovation plan for those operational wind farms. Different from traditional wind farm layout optimization, the purpose of the renovation is to install new wind turbines while maintaining the status quo, which is an optimization problem with the constraint of initial wind turbines. Therefore, the renovation plan can be applied flexibly without waiting for the decommissioning of initial wind turbines. In this paper, the renovation plan is provided by a robust wind farm layout optimization framework based on a machine learning wake model, which can evaluate overall power production more accurately than traditional analytical models. Both heuristic and gradient-based optimization algorithms are applied and compared. Horns Rev wind farm is analyzed for demonstration. The differences between the two algorithms are limited to 1%. Furthermore, the renovation and freeform optimizations are successfully applied to the cases with 12.5%∼50% more wind turbines. According to the results, the freeform optimizations without the constraint of initial wind turbines have similar performance to renovation plans with an error smaller than 0.3%. When the number of wind turbines is added from 80 to 120, the normalized AEP (annual energy production) slightly decreases from 96.6% to 93.4%, which means the power loss increases by 3%∼4%. In the meantime, the capacity density increases significantly by 50% as the area remains the same. In conclusion, the renovation plan is recommended for aging wind farms with a low capacity density like Horns Rev wind farm.

Abstract:Offshore wind farms have experienced rapid growth in China, providing adequate power for coastal load centers. While, the investment of offshore wind farms is much higher than that of land-based wind farms. Meanwhile, the transmission loss inside an offshore wind farm (typical value > 3%) is much higher than that in a land-based one (typical value < 1%) for larger installed capacity, wider space distribution and significant capacitive reactance of long submarine cables. Therefore, minimization of transmission loss becomes important to reduce the cost of offshore wind farms. Due to nonlinear relation and uncertainty of wind, minimizing active power loss caused by reactive power transmission remains a challenging task. This paper presents a two-step optimization strategy to reduce transmission loss inside offshore wind farm. Discrete devices such as on load tap changing transformer (OLTC) and static var compensator (SVC) are built in, and the uncertainty of wind speed is considered. Step I controls discrete devices with a scenarios based method, while step II fine tunes the reactive power generation of wind turbines. In the optimization, second-order cone relaxation (SOCR) is applied for better computational performance. In contrast with automatic voltage control (AVC), transmission loss decreases by 30% without significant increase of voltage fluctuation.
Cable Connection Scheme Optimization for Offshore Wind Farm Considering Wake Effect

Abstract:In order to reduce the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) of the offshore wind farm, many optimization works should be done to reduce the investment and increase the energy production. As one of the main expenses, the electrical system can take up more than 15% of the total investment while cable costs take a large proportion. In order to make a cost-effective wind farm, the cable connection layout should be optimized. This paper proposes a novel way for offshore wind farm cable connection layout design. The LCOE, which concerns three aspects: electrical power losses, power captured by wind turbines (WT) and investment, is selected to set up the objective function. Since all the optimization variables are integers, a heuristic algorithm, integer particle swarm optimization algorithm (IPSO), is adopted to find a near optimal solution. To improve the performance of the IPSO, an adaptive method for parameter control is used to help to find a better solution. Comparisons are made with results obtained by the Norwegian center for offshore wind energy (NORCOWE) reference wind farm and the presented method. From the simulation, it can be noticed that the presented approach can help to find a cable connection scheme which can reduce the LCOE by 1.75%.

Abstract:Gas hydrates are a convenient source of clean energy for the future. The process of hydrates extraction through CO2 replacement is a promising extraction method, and methane reforming is able to produce both hydrogen and CO2 for replacement. Due to the high energy consumption of the reforming process, this work considers floating offshore wind farms as a clean energy supply source. Wind resources vary over the year and the position of floating wind turbines can be adjusted to better match wind supply in different periods. However, traditional wind farm design methods do not consider the movement of wind turbines. This work proposes a multi-period optimization based on Genetic Algorithm and Geosteiner algorithm to determine the wind turbine layout in different periods of the year. The results from the case study show that the multi-period optimization method can improve power generation by 17%, compared to a fixed wind farm layout. In addition, the results have close relation to the size of the wind farm and the frequency of adjusting the layout. Further improvements include accounting for wind turbines together with the platform energy system to increase energy efficiency.

Abstract:Maximising the power production of offshore wind farms using proper control strategy has become an important issue for wind farm operators. However, the power transmitted to the onshore substation is not only related to the power production of each wind turbine but also the power losses which are related to electrical system topology. This study proposed an optimised power dispatch strategy for minimising the levelised production cost of a wind farm. Particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is employed to obtain final solution for the optimisation problem. Both regular shape and irregular shape wind farm are chosen for the case study. The proposed dispatch strategy is compared with two other control strategies. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Abstract:When an offshore wind farm is designed, the available ocean space limits the overall farm's output. Consequently, over the last few decades, the density of turbines has increased, which in turn intensified the aerodynamic interactions between the turbines. The interaction is a consequence of the farm layout, which is affected by the macro siting and micro siting optimization concerns. However, existing optimization approaches cannot satisfy the complicated offshore condition. To provide a more competitive cost, this paper proposes an advanced optimization approach that combines fluid mechanics methods and mathematical models to analyze the optimal array layout of large offshore wind farms. First, to obtain the maximum power generation, we propose an integrated interference model to describe the aerodynamic interaction between any two adjacent turbines. Second, we study the changing relation of the layout of wind turbines and the power generation of the system. Third, we investigate three different scenarios with aligned and staggered layouts under different wind conditions. We also perform an extensive sensitivity analysis on the influence of the occurrence probabilities of multiple prevailing wind directions on the power efficiency of wind farms. Finally, we suggest some policies to support the market development.

Abstract:Constructing large-scale offshore wind farms (OWFs) has become the main direction of utilizing wind power to help realize the energy transformation. Traditionally, the planning of the OWF collector system would rely on either heuristic or deterministic optimization algorithms, which, respectively, suffer from unstable outputs and a lack of freedom in searching for a globally optimal solution. This article innovatively designs a hybrid optimization approach combining algorithms in these two categories to achieve a balance between improved economic efficiency and stable outputs. The whole design consists of two layers of hybrid optimizations. The outer layer is to partition wind turbines (WTs) into groups, where each group is allocated with an offshore substation with the optimized location for power collection and transmission. This partitioning and locating optimization is solved through a combination of the deterministic fuzzy C-means clustering method and the genetic algorithm (GA). The inner layer is to arrange optimal connections using proper cable ratings among WTs within each group, and GA is properly integrated into the deterministic two-phase Clark and Wright's saving algorithm to solve the problem. The collector system planning, in this article, concerns both the investment cost and the long-term power-loss cost. The former consists of the networks of internal medium voltage and the external high voltage, which collect the power from WTs and transmit it to the onshore grid. The proposed design is tested on a benchmark OWF collector system, and the test result verifies its achievements in higher economic efficiency with stable outputs.

Optimization of offshore grid planning considering onshore network expansions

Abstract:In the coming years, an extensive development of offshore wind energy will present a clear trend of clustering offshore wind farms (OWFs). Offshore grid is a novel concept proposed to address the problem of connecting OWFs and integrating large offshore wind energy into the regional onshore power system economically and reliably. Compared with traditional electrical systems in large OWFs, the connection of offshore grid demonstrates some new features. This paper presents a tri-level optimization strategy to optimize offshore grid planning while considering onshore network expansions simultaneously. The proposed strategy turns the optimization of these two complicated electrical networks into three nested optimization models: the 'Point of common coupling (PCC) optimizer', 'Offshore substation (OS) optimizer', and 'Offshore grid optimizer'. An engineering case from the East China Sea is discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The results show that offshore grid demonstrates better overall economic efficiency and less marine corridor consumption. In addition, the proposed methodology can make the integration of large OWFs more friendly to onshore networks.

Abstract:The development of wind power is crucial in addressing the global energy and environmental crises. To enhance wind farm efficiency, a novel bilevel non-uniform optimization approach is proposed to conduct the wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) and electrical cable routing (ECR) simultaneously. Additionally, 2D and 3D wake modelling strategies are investigated and validated to accurately evaluate the wind power generation from multiple wind turbines. The refined levelized cost of energy (LCOE), considered as the objective function, is proposed, and validated through two realistic offshore wind farms. Finally, a comparison of the uniform turbine layout optimized using both independent and bilevel optimization strategies, as well as the original layout, reveals that the LCOE decreases by 0.9% and 1.0%, respectively. The results shows that the bilevel optimization approach exhibits a slight advantage. Compared to the uniform optimization, the non-uniform optimization of turbine layout and cable routing shows better performance, with the LCOE reduction of 4.75%, 7.68%, and 9.11% for 2 MW, 3.6 MW and 8 MW, respectively. It concludes that the effectiveness of implementing a non-uniform and uniform turbine layout optimization for turbines with smaller and larger power capacities. The proposed method has the potential to improve offshore wind farm efficiency.

Abstract:As the emergence of large-scale offshore wind farms (WFs), how to reduce the high cost of them has become a critical problem. One way is to decrease the maintenance cost, another way is to capture more wind energy. Herein, an optimised WF active power dispatch (APD) strategy is proposed to make WF capture the maximum wind energy while balancing the fatigue distribution of WF, which is closely related to the WF maintenance frequency. In addition, two traditional strategies are introduced as comparisons of the proposed strategy. And the result of strategy A is used as a benchmark for comparison. This paper takes fatigue coefficient to evaluate the fatigue load suffered by wind turbines (WT). Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is adopted to solve this problem. Simulations are conducted based on a regular shaped WF with 25 WTs and an irregular shaped WF with 80 WTs. The results of case studies prove the superiority of the strategy formulated herein.
