Abstract:Nanostructured transition metal oxides are very attractive as electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage. Herein, urchin-like CoO microsphere films are prepared by a low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis. The urchin-like CoO microspheres are composed of numerous nanoparticles, with a large specific surface area of 103 m(2) g(-1). For lithium storage, the CoO microsphere film electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 950 mAh g(-1) after 120 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g(-1). In particular, a reversible capacity of 499 mAh g(-1) is achieved after 250 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) for first ten cycles and a current density of 500 mA g(-1) for the 11th to 250th cycles, demonstrating the good rate capability and superior cycling stability of the film electrode. For sodium storage, the CoO microsphere film electrode shows a capacity of 172 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g(-1). Further, a reversible capacity of 156 mAh g(-1) is obtained at a relatively high rate of 800 mA g(-1). The enhanced lithium/sodium storage properties of the hierarchically porous CoO microsphere film electrode may be ascribed to its high specific surface area and free-standing film structure. Abstract:Hierarchically nanostructured binary/multiple transition-metal oxides with electrically conductive coatings are very attractive for lithium-ion batteries owing to their excellent electrochemical properties induced by their unique compositions and microstructures. Herein, hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres are prepared by a simple one-step annealing in Ar atmosphere, using Mn-doped Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Mn-doped MIL-53(Fe)) as precursor. The MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite particles have a uniform nanosphere structure with a diameter of ∼100 nm, and each nanosphere is composed of clustered primary nanoparticles with an amorphous carbon shell, forming a unique hierarchical nanoarchitecture. The as-prepared hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres exhibit markedly enhanced lithium-storage performance, with a large capacity of 1297.5 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 200 mA g-1. The cycling performance is clarified through analyzing the galvanostatic discharge/charge voltage profiles and electrochemical impedance spectra at different cycles. The unique microstructures and Mn element doping of the hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres lead to their enhanced lithium-storage performance.

Abstract:In this work, a novel hydrothermal route is developed to synthesize cobalt carbonate hydroxide, Co(CO3)0.5(OH).0.11H2O. In this method, sodium chloride salt is utilized to organize single-crystalline nanowires into a chrysanthemum-like hierarchical assembly. The morphological evolution process of this organized product is investigated by examining different reaction intermediates during the synthesis. The growth and thus the final assembly of the Co(CO3)0.5(OH).0.11H2O can be finely tuned by selecting preparative parameters, such as the molar ratio of the starting chemicals, the additives, the reaction time and the temperature. Using the flower-like Co(CO3)0.5(OH).0.11H2O as a solid precursor, quasi-single-crystalline mesoporous Co3O4 nanowire arrays are prepared via thermal decomposition in air. Furthermore, carbon can be added onto the spinel oxide by a chemical-vapor-deposition method using acetylene, which leads to the generation of carbon-sheathed CoO nanowire arrays (CoO@C). Through comparing and analyzing the crystal structures, the resultant products and their high crystallinity can be explained by a sequential topotactic transformation of the respective precursors. The electrochemical performances of the typical cobalt oxide products are also evaluated. It is demonstrated that tuning of the surface texture and the pore size of the Co3O4 products is very important in lithium-ion-battery applications. The carbon-decorated CoO nanowire arrays exhibit an excellent cyclic performance with nearly 100% capacity retention in a testing range of 70 cycles. Therefore, this CoO@C nanocomposite can be considered to be an attractive candidate as an anode material for further investigation.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres self-assembled by nanosheets with a thickness of similar to 10 nm have been synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route together with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and sodium citrate. As TMAH is only used without any sodium citrate, the obtained products are ZnO nanoplates with a thickness of similar to 50 nm and a lateral size of similar to 300 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and N-2-physisorption technique were employed to characterize the phase composition and microstructure of the synthesized samples. On the basis of the experimental results, a possible formation mechanism of the ZnO nanoplates and the hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres has been proposed. Due to the ultrathin nanosheet and mesostructure feature, the hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres as anode exhibit significant improvements in reversible capacities and cycle performance over the ZnO nanoplates. Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Nanostructured transition metal oxides are considered as some of the promising anode materials for rapidly emerging sodium ion batteries. Herein, a hierarchically porous CoNiO2 nanosheet array film is prepared via a low-temperature solvothermal method with subsequent annealing treatment. As a self-supported anode for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the as-prepared hierarchically porous CoNiO2 nanosheet array film manifests superior sodium storage performance. The film electrode delivers a large reversible capacity of 746.6 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at 200 mA g (-1). In particular, a capacity of 419 mA h g(-1) is achieved at a high current density of 1600 mA g (-1), demonstrating a good rate capability.

Abstract:Carbon coating is one of the most effective strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of nanostructured transition metal oxides (TMOs). Herein, we report a facile and scalable method to prepare hierarchical Fe3O4@C nanospheres. The fabrication includes one-step solvothermal synthesis of Fe2O3/MIL-100(Fe) precursor and subsequent annealing treatment in Ar. The Fe3O4 @C nanospheres with an average size of about 200 nm are composed of many interconnected small nanoparticles, with an amorphous carbon layer on the surface of Fe3O4, exhibiting a unique hierarchical nanostructure with a larger specific surface area of 176.5 m(2) g(-1). The hierarchical Fe3O4@C nanosphere electrode delivers a high capacity of 757.9 mAh g(-1) after 500 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g(-1), demonstrating superior high-rate lithium storage performance. This may be ascribed to the unique hierarchical nanoarchitecture, higher specific surface area and the uniform carbon layer in-situ generated from MIL100(Fe). (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The inferior conductivity and large volume expansion impair the widespread applications of metal oxide‐based anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries. To address these issues, herein an efficient strategy of structural engineering is proposed to improve lithium storage performance of hierarchical CoO nanospheres wrapped by graphene via controllable S‐doping (CoOS0.1 @ G). S‐doping promotes the Li+ diffusion kinetics of CoO by expanding the interplanar spacing of CoO, lowering the activation energy, and improving the pseudocapacitance contribution. Meanwhile, the electronic structure of CoO is adjusted by S‐doping as confirmed by density functional theory calculations, thus enhancing the conductivity. Finite element analysis reveals that the produced Li2S during lithiation improves the structural stability of the S‐doped electrode, which is further confirmed by experimental observation. As expected, CoOS0.1 @ G exhibits excellent lithium storage performance with an initial discharge capacity of 1974 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, and high discharge capacity of 1573 mAh g−1 after 400 cycles at 500 mA g−1. It is believed that the insights into the structural doping enlighten research to explore other metal oxides for fast and stable Li ion storage.

Abstract:Self-assembled porous hierarchical-like CoO@C nanoarchitectures have been fabricated on a large scale through a facile solution-phase process and subsequent annealing of the inorganic-organic Co(OH)(2)-DS (dodecyl sulphate) precursor nanocomposites. The as-formed porous hierarchical-like CoO@C nanohybrid as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries can exhibit not only a highly reversible capacity but also excellent cycling performance as well as good rate capability. Results show that these hierarchical microsheets made of interconnected CoO tiny nanoparticles are uniformly encapsulated within two-dimensional thin carbon layers. The synergistic effect of both the hierarchical nanoarchitecture and conducting carbon layer support contributes to the enhanced electrochemical performances of the hybrid CoO@C electrode. Importantly, the process to fabricate such a hierarchical nanostructure is facile, low-cost, and scalable, providing a universal approach for the rational design and engineering of self-assembled hierarchical-like electrode materials with enhanced performance, which may have utilities in other applications such as catalysis and sensors.

Abstract:Hierarchical CuCo2O4 microflowers (CCFs) self-assembled by thin and porous nanosheets were synthesized by a simple solvothermal reaction followed by a low-temperature calcination. The porous nanosheets not only shorten the Li-ion diffusion distances and tolerate the volume variation upon cycling, but also enhance the transportation of oxygen and Li+ ions, and have abundance of active sites on the surface. Thus, it has been explored as the superior anode material in Li-ion batteries and as the cathode catalyst in Li-O-2 batteries. Both of applications exhibit the remarkable electrochemical properties. In lithium ion batteries, CuCo2O4 micro-flowers deliver a specific lithium storage capacity of 871 mA h g(-1), after 300 cycles at 100 mA g(-1). Even at a high rate of 1 A g(-1), the reversible capacity of the CuCo2O4 microflowers still remains at 612 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles. In Li-O-2 batteries, CuCo2O4 microflowers as the cathode catalyst last 120 cycles, much longer than highly aggregated CuCo2O4 and pure carbon. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:CoFe2O4 flower-like microspheres are prepared via a surfactant- and template-free method, involving the controlled hytrothermal synthesis firstly and a subsequent thermal decomposition treatment. The microspheres with diameters of 3–4 μm are characterized by the assembly of numerous porous and inter-connected lamella structures. Lithium-ion batteries electrodes based on the as-prepared CoFe2O4 microspheres show a high specific capacity of 733.5 mAh g−1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g−1 and a good cyclic stability, as well as excellent rate capability. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the hierarchical microsphere structure with high sufficient interfacial contact area between the microspheres and electrolyte, the short diffusion distance of Li+, better accommodation of structural stress and volume change with the lithiation/delithiation process. It is suggested that the CoFe2O4 microsphere is one of the most promising candidates for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical CoxMn3-xO4 array micro-/nanostructures with tunable morphology and composition have been grown on conductive stainless steel with robust adhesion by a facile solvothermal route and a subsequent annealing treatment. By simply controlling the volume ratio of components in the mixed solvent, the morphology of the products can be tailored from hierarchical nanowires to nanosheets. Benefitting from the unique structural features, the resultant CoMn2O4 nanowires and MnCo2O4 nanosheets exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with remarkable specific capacities (540-207 mA h g(-1)) at various current rates (1-10 C) and good cycling stability for highly reversible lithium storage. The enhanced electrochemical performance suggests their promising use as integrated binder-free electrodes for microscale lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous cobalt oxide (Co3O4) array films are successfully prepared by electrodeposition through polystyrene sphere monolayer template. The as-prepared Co3O4 array films exhibit three typical porous structures from non-close-packed bowl array to close-packed bowl array and hierarchical two layer array structures. These Co3O4 array films have a hierarchical porous structure, in which the skeleton is composed of ordered arrays possessing nanoporous walls. A possible growth mechanism of porous Co3O4 array films is proposed. As anodes for Li ion batteries, the as-prepared Co3O4 array films exhibit quite good cycle life and high capacity. The first discharge capacity for the three Co3O4 array films is 1511, 1475, 1463mAhg−1, respectively, and their initial coulombic efficiencies are as high as 72%. The specific capacity after 50 cycles for the three electrodes is 712, 665 and 640mAhg−1 at 1C rate, corresponding to 80%, 75%, 72% of the theoretical value (890mAhg−1), respectively.

Abstract:Nanostructured Co3O4 is one of the promising anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a hierarchical top-converged Co3O4 nanowire array is prepared by the electrochemical corrosion of electrodeposited cobalt film and subsequent annealing treatment in air. In the corrosion process, a dissolution-recrystallization induced ripening process results in the morphology transformation from the initially formed nanosheets to nanowires, and the hierarchical top-converged nanowire array film is finally achieved. The as-prepared Co3O4 nanowire array electrode shows a reversible capacity of 0.54 mAh cm(-2) (1213.49 mAh g(-1)) after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.1 mA cm(-2) (224.72 mA g(-1)), manifesting higher capacity and excellent cycling stability. The electrode also demonstrates a good rate capability, with a reversible capacity of 0.26 mAh cm(-2) (584.27 mAh g(-1)) at a relatively large current density of 0.8 mA cm(-2) (1797.96 mA g(-1)). The enhanced lithium storage performance of the hierarchical top-converged nanowire array electrode is originated from its unique structural characteristics. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Constructing hierarchical porous structures on the current collectors is an attractive strategy for improving the rate performance of the Li ion battery electrodes. However, preparing hierarchical porous structures normally requires hard or soft templates to create hollows or pores in different sizes. Rigorous preparation conditions are needed to control the size (especially nanosize) and size distribution of the pores obtained by conventional methods. Herein, we describe a template-free two-step synthesis process to prepare hierarchical porous Co3O4 films on Ni foam substrates. In this synthesis process, free-standing mesoporous precursor flakes are deposited on Ni foams by an electrochemical method. Subsequently, the meosporous precursor flake arrays are calcined to obtain hierarchical porous Co3O4 films. More strikingly, the size of the mesopores in the flakes can be adjusted by altering the calcination temperature. The structure and morphology of the samples are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements. The relationship of the in-flake-pore size and the calcinations temperature is proposed here. Electrochemical tests have revealed that the hierarchical porous Co3O4 films demonstrate excellent rate performances (650 mAh g(-1) at 30 C) as Li ion battery anodes due to the hierarchical porous structure, which endows fast ion transmission. Abstract:Transition metal oxide-based anode materials possess high theoretical capacity and abundant resources but are limited by severe volume variation and intrinsic low conductivity, thus leading to rapid capacity decay and poor rate performance. Herein, we develop a strategy to prepare porous hierarchical Co3O4 nanopsheres by controlling the annealing process of Co-gluconates, and the Co3O4 nanospheres were successfully wrapped by rGO nanosheets with good dispersion through facile hydrothermal treatment. The Co3O4/rGO electrode demonstrates outstanding lithium storage properties, delivering a reversible capacity of 949.4 mA h g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) after 300 cycles and 512.3 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1) even after 1000 cycles. The introduction of rGO nanosheets not only greatly enhances the electron conductivity but also offers high pseudocapacitive lithium storage behavior. More importantly, the integration of porous hierarchical electrode materials with conductive matrices can be generally applied for the development of high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:A hierarchically Fe2O3@Co3O4 nanowire array is prepared by the aid of hydrothermal synthesis and sacrificial hydrolysis method. The obtained nanowire array shows hierarchical porosity and large surface area. The resulted Fe2O3@Co3O4 nanowire array is evaluated as an anode material for Li ion batteries, which exhibits high capacity and good cycle stability (1005.1 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g(-1)) and an excellent rate performance, mainly owing to the unique hierarchical nanowire architecture and an elegant synergistic effect of two electrochemically active materials. The developed strategy can be readily generalized to construct other multifunctional hybrid nanostructures, which will be promising materials for high-performance electrochemical devices. Abstract:Hierarchically branched array architectures have received tremendous research attention for the application in energy conversion and storage owing to their unique microstructures. Herein, novel in-situ formed hierarchically branched CoC2O4@CoO/Co composite arrays are successfully designed and prepared via a facile self-corrosion process and subsequent calcination treatment. The resultant CoC2O4@CoO/Co composite materials have a novel hierarchically branched array microstructure, with secondary CoC2O4 nanoneedles in-situ grown on the surface of primary cores. As the binder-free anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the hierarchically branched CoC2O4@CoO/Co composite arrays exhibit remarkable electrochemical lithium storage properties, including high reversible capacity, excellent cycling performance, and superior rate capability. Further kinetic analyses reveal that capacitance and diffusion-controlled mechanisms are responsible for their high electrochemical lithium storage, and the pseudocapacitive behavior can contribute extra capacity. This structural design concept may open an avenue for the construction of hierarchically branched high-performance materials for application in energy conversion and storage devices.
