Abstract:Carbon sphere with uniform size is prepared through a simple and green hydrothermal method. Ag particles are loaded on the carbon sphere surface to form a novel plasmonic photocatalyst C@Ag. C@Ag shows two times activity than single Ag component in de-coloration of rhodamine B (Rh.B), and indicates higher performance than P25-N. 85% Rh. B was decolored after 180 minutes. Carbon sphere not only enhances the photocatalytic activity, but also reduces the cost of noble Ag metal. In addition, hydroxyl radical is detected and it acts as important active species during plasmonic photocatalytic reaction.

Abstract:Hollow-structured polyhedral nanostructures of AgI nanoboxes and cube-tetrapod Ag/AgI cages have been fabricated through the controlled reaction of I- ions with nanocubes and cube-tetrapods of AgCl based on the principle of the Kirkendall effect. The Ag-0 nanodomains in the source nanoparticles of AgCl:Ag are preserved in the final hollow Ag/AgI cages during the chemical conversion of AgCl to AgI. The obtained hollow cube-tetrapod Ag/AgI nanostructures exhibited enhanced light absorption in the visible region and photocatalytic performance towards hydrogen evolution from water reduction and decomposition of organic pollutants, owing to the contribution of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of silver nanoparticles (nanodomains). The present versatile route can be generalized to the preparation of other inorganic functional materials with hollow interiors for different applications.
Designing 1D Plasmonic Ag/CuWO4 Nanocomposite forEnhancing Visible-Light Photoelectrochemical Performance

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of CuWO4, its functionalization with plasmonic Ag nanostructures, and its photoelectrochemical properties. First, a solution-phase polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted approach was used to prepare shape-controlled plasmonic Ag (nanoparticles (NPs) and nanowires (NWs)) via heterogeneous nucleation. The growth process and morphological tuning of the as-synthesized Ag nanostructures were investigated experimentally. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to understand the underlying principles that govern nanowire growth by analyzing the interaction energies between crystal surfaces and PVP as well as the atom density profile. Significant enhancements of the photocurrent (45% and 140%, respectively) at the thermodynamic potential for oxygen evolution (0.62 V vs. Ag/AgCl) were obtained for Ag NP/CuWO4 (0.11 mA/cm2) and Ag NW/CuWO4 (0.18 mA/cm2) photoanodes, respectively, compared to pristine CuWO4 photoanode. Moreover, the incorporation of Ag NWs significantly enhances the incident photon to current conversion efficiency across the 350-550 nm spectral range, revealing a maximum around 10%. The obtained improvement is attributed to improved light harvesting by Ag-induced surface plasmon resonance effects with a dual peak absorption, together with more effective charge carrier transfer/separation. Therefore, incorporation of the as-prepared plasmonic nanostructures with CuWO4 causes a considerable improvement of the photoelectrochemical activity for energy conversion/storage applications.

Abstract:Abstract Here, a facile approach to enhance the performance of solar‐driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is described by means of the synergistic effects of a hybrid network of plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) decorated on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The device based on TiO2–Au:CNTs hybrid network sensitized with colloidal CdSe/(CdSexS1−x)5/(CdS)1 core/alloyed shell quantum dots (QDs) yields a saturated photocurrent density of 16.10 ± 0.10 mA cm−2 [at 1.0 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)] under 1 sun illumination (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm−2), which is ≈26% higher than the control device. The in‐depth mechanism behind this significant improvement is revealed through a combined experimental and theoretical analysis for QDs/TiO2–Au:CNTs hybrid network and demonstrates the multifaceted impact of plasmonic Au NPs and CNTs: i) hot‐electron injection from Au NPs into CNTs and TiO2; ii) near‐field enhancement of the QDs absorption and carrier generation/separation processes by the plasmonic Au NPs; iii) enhanced photoinjected electron transport due to the highly directional pathways offered by CNTs. These results provide fundamental insights on the properties of QDs/TiO2–Au:CNTs hybrid network, and highlights the possibility to improve the performance of other solar technologies.
Accelerating Photoelectric CO2 Conversion with a Photothermal Wavelength-Dependent Plasmonic Local Field

Abstract:The fabrication of an efficient and low-cost photocathode still remains a big challenge. We herein report a Ag/ CuxO@rGO/Mo photocathode for CO2 conversion. A unique wavelength-dependent performance is found to enhance the formation of the key intermediate groups by exciting photothermal local surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) using the lights with wavelengths ranging from 550 to 600 nm. CO, H2 and CH4 can be stably produced with dual photoelectrodes using a neutral solution. An unbiased solar-to-gaseous-carbon-fuel efficiency (SGCF) of 0.51 % has been achieved, which sets a record for carbon gas fuel production with binary photoelectrodes. In addition, the CO/H2 ratio could be tuned in the range from 0.65 to 1.84, which makes it possible to fine tune the syngas production. The excellent PEC CO2 reduction capability achieved by the new wavelengthdependent catalytic route may shine some lights for the future design and development of the next-generation PEC materials and devices.
Plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic properties of Au/ZnO nanowires

Abstract:Using sunlight as renewable resource has stimulated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collect visible light. Semiconductor nanowire-based photocatalysts have attracted increasing interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and structural advantages. Here, noble metal-semiconductor hybrid Au/ZnO nanowires have been fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method. The hybrid photocatalysts were well characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Compared with ZnO nanowires, Au/ZnO heterostructures exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance due to the synergistic combination of Au and ZnO. Optical properties were modeled to support our interpretation of photocatalytic mechanisms. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare plasmonic photocatalysts and will also deepen the understanding of the plasmon enhanced photocatalytic performance in hybrid photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photo-bolometric effect is critically important in optoelectronic structures and devices employing metallic electrodes with nanoscale features due to heating caused by the plasmonic field enhancement. One peculiar case is individual silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and their networks. Ag NW-networks exhibit excellent thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties, providing a simple yet reliable alternative to common flexible transparent electrode materials used in optoelectronic devices. To date there have been no reports on the photoresponse of Ag NWs. In this work, we show that a single Ag NW and a network of such Ag NWs possess a significant, intrinsic photoresponse thanks to the photo-bolometric effect, as directly observed and measured using scanning photocurrent microscopy. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) created at the contact metals or plasmons created at the nanowire-metal structures cause heating at the junctions where a plasmonic field enhancement is possible. The local heating of the Ag NWs results in negative photoconductance due to the bolometric effect. Here an open-circuit response due to the plasmon-enhanced Seebeck effect was recorded at the NW-metal contact junctions. The SPP-assisted bolometric effect is found to be further enhanced by decorating the Ag NWs with Ag nanoparticles. These observations are relevant to the use of metallic nanowires in plasmonic applications in particular and in optoelectronics in general. Our findings may pave the path for plasmonics enabled sensing without a spectroscopic detection.

Ag-Nanoparticle-Decorated SiO2 Nanospheres Exhibiting Remarkable Plasmon-Mediated Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:We demonstrated for the first time that Ag-nanoparticle-decorated SiO2 nanospheres (NSs) may display noticeable photocatalytic activities upon surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excitation. The samples were prepared by reacting SiO2 NSs with AgNO3 in the seed-mediated growth process, from which the Ag particle size and decoration density can be readily controlled. The dependence of the SPR-mediated photocatalytic performance of Ag-decorated SiO2 NSs on the Ag morphology was investigated and presented. The as-prepared Ag-decorated SiO2 NSs showed a significantly red shifted and relatively broad SPR absorption when compared with the individually dispersed Ag nanoparticles. Owing to the considerably broad SPR absorption that spanned from the visible to the near-infrared region, Ag-decorated SiO2 NSs surpassed N-doped P-25 TiO2 powder and individually dispersed Ag nanoparticles in photocatalytic activity, demonstrating their potential as an active photocatalyst in nearly all the current photocatalysis applications. Furthermore, the result of performance evaluation under natural sunlight shows that the present Ag-decorated SiO2 NSs can be used as highly efficient photocatalysts that may practically harvest energy from sunlight. The current study provides a new paradigm for designing plasmonic metal nanostructures that can effectively absorb the entire solar spectrum and beyond for solar fuel generation.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) hold tremendous promise for catalyzing light-driven chemical reactions. The conventionally assumed detrimental absorption loss from plasmon damping can now be harvested to drive chemical transformations of the NP adsorbent, through the excitation and transfer of energetic "hot" carriers. The rate and selectivity of plasmonic photocatalysis are dependent on the characteristics of the incident light. By engineering the strength and wavelength of the light harvesting of a NP, it is possible to achieve more efficient and predictive photocatalysts. We report a plasmonic--photonic resonance hybridization strategy to substantially enhance hot electron generation at tunable, narrow-band wavelengths. By coupling the plasmon resonance of silver NPs to the guided mode resonance in a photonic crystal (PC) slab, the reaction rate of a hot-electron-driven reduction conversion is greatly accelerated. The mechanism is broadly compatible with NPs with manifold materials and shapes optimized for the targeted chemistry. The novel enhancement platform sheds light on rational design of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts.

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures can produce the surface plasmon resonance under appropriate photoexcitation, which can be used to promote or facilitate chemical reactions, as well as photocatalytic materials, due to their strong plasmon resonance in the visible light region. In the current work, Ag/Au nanoislands (NIs) and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were designed, and their thermocatalysis performance was investigated using luminescence of Eu3+ as a probe. Compared with Ag NIs, the catalytic efficiency and stability of surface plasmons of Ag/Au NIs and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were greatly improved. It was found that the metal NIs can also generate strong localized heat at low temperature environment, enabling the transition of NaYF4:Eu3+ to Y2O3: Eu3+, and anti-oxidation was realized by depositing gold on the surface of silver, resulting in the relative stability of the constructed complex.

Abstract:Herein, we report the successful application of hybrid Au-Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and nanochains (NCs) in the harvesting of visible light energy for selective hydrogenation reactions. For individual Au@Ag NPs with Au25 cores, the conversion and turnover frequency (TOF) are approximately 8 and 10 times higher than those of Au25 NPs, respectively. Notably, after the self-assembly of the Au@Ag NPs, the conversion and TOF of 1D NCs were approximately 2.5 and 2 times higher than those of isolated Au@Ag NPs, respectively, owing to the coupling of surface plasmon and the increase in the rate at which hot (energetic) electrons are generated with the formation of plasmonic hot spots between NPs. Furthermore, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of 1D Au@Ag NCs was strengthened by nearly 2 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Hybrid nanomaterials containing both noble metal and semiconductor building blocks provide an engineerable platform for realizing direct or indirect charge and energy transfer for enhanced plasmonic photoconversion and photocatalysis. In this work, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) nanocrystals (NCs) are combined into a AgNP@CuFeS2 hybrid structure comprising NCs embedded in a self-assembled lipid coating around the AgNP core. In AgNP@CuFeS2 hybrid structures, both metallic and semiconductor NCs support quasistatic resonances. To characterize the interactions between these resonances and their effect on potential charge and energy transfer, direct interfacial excitation transfer between the AgNP core and surrounding CuFeS2 NCs is probed through single particle line shape analysis and supporting electromagnetic simulations. These studies reveal that CuFeS2 NCs localized in the evanescent field of the central AgNP induce a broadening of the metal NP line shape that peaks when an energetic match between the AgNP and CuFeS2 NC resonances maximizes direct energy transfer. Dimers of AgNPs whose resonances exhibit poor energetic overlap with the CuFeS2 NC quasistatic resonance yield much weaker line shape broadening in a control experiment, corroborating the existence of resonant energy transfer in the AgNP@CuFeS2 hybrid. Resonant coupling between the metallic and semiconductor building blocks in the investigated hybrid architecture provides a mechanism for utilizing the large optical cross-section of the central AgNP to enhance the generation of reactive charge carriers in the surrounding semiconductor NCs for potential applications in photocatalysis.
Enhanced Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells with Silver Nanowire Electrodes

Abstract:Surface plamon resonance (SPR) in metallic nanostructures offers a promising way to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cell as it exhibits strongly enhanced electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of the metal, which can lead to increased optical absorption in the organic film. Here we demonstrate the SPR enhanced photo-current and PCE of organic solar cells using periodic Ag nanowires as transparent electrodes as compared to the device with conventional ITO electrode. Photo-currents and external quantum efficiencies (EQE) are enhanced as much as 40% and 2.5 fold at a wavelength of 570 nm, respectively, resulting in 35% overall increase in power conversion efficiency than the ITO control device. The use of plasmonic transparent Ag nanowire electrode may help to realize low cost and high performance organic solar cells.

Abstract:A novel and simple synthetic approach toward core-shell Ag@C3N4 nanocomposites is developed. Ag@C3N4 core-shell nanostructures were formed via reflux treatment of Ag nanoparticles with graphitic C3N4 nanosheets in methanol. The core-shell hybrid photocatalysts showed dramatic photoinduced electron-hole separation efficiency and photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. The photocurrent intensity, photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) and hydrogen evolution reaction of Ag@C3N4 were about 4, 1.8 and 30 times as that of pure C3N4 sample, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity for core-shell Ag@C3N4 originated from a combined result of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect for Ag and hybrid effect from C3N4, resulting in the coupling interaction of the enhanced light absorption intensity, high separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons-holes, longer lifetime of charge carriers and its favorable adsorptivity. Hybrid Integration of Au Nanoplates and Ag Nanoparticles with Controlled Nanogaps via Cu2O‐mediated Galvanic Replacement Reaction: Plasmonic Catalysis and Photothermal Conversion

Abstract:Au nanoplates and Ag nanoparticles are rationally assembled in a hybrid form and controlled nanogaps via a stepwise seeded growth, which is realized by conformal coating of a Cu2O layer over Au nanoplates and partial convert Cu2O into Ag nanoparticles via the galvanic replacement reaction. Rational assembling of different noble metal nanocrystals with controlled nanogaps in one entity allows the efficient coupling of electromagnetic fields of each component and versatile manipulation over the overall physiochemical properties. In the present study, we report a stepwise synthetic strategy to hybridlike assemble Au nanoplate and Ag nanoparticles without direct physical contact. Particularly, the success of current work relies on the conformal coating of Cu2O over the Au nanoplate as an intermediate layer, followed by the in situ formation of Ag nanoparticles via the galvanic replacement reaction between Cu2O and Ag+. With the anchoring of Ag nanoparticles over the Cu2O‐wrapped Au nanoplate, the resulting hybrid nanostructures exhibit noticeable multiple plasmonic absorptions across the UV‐vis‐NIR region. The potential use as the plasmonic catalyst for current Au@Cu2O‐Ag hybrid products is validated using reduction of 4‐nitrophenol as the model reaction, where the catalytic performance is greatly improved by the UV‐vis light irradiation. They also exhibit satisfactory photothermal conversion performance under the irradiation of Xe lamp. The current work provides a niche strategy to create noble‐metal hybrid nanostructures with controlled interparticle distance and tunable plasmonic properties, could be extended to other noble metal or alloys.

Highly Enhanced Photoluminescence of Monolayer MoS 2 in Plasmonic Hybrids with Double-Layer Stacked Ag Nanoparticles

Abstract:In this work, a feasible method was proposed to prepare MoS2-based plasmonic hybrid systems with high photoluminescence (PL) emission enhancement. The enhancement effect of plasmonic hybrids on the PL emission of MoS2 has been systematically studied on MoS2/Ag spherical nanoparticle (SP) hybrid systems with different architectures by changing the stacking position of Ag SPs. It is demonstrated that the sandwich-like hybrid composed of monolayer MoS2 and dielectric Al2O3 layer between two layers of Ag SPs has the highest PL enhancement. Remarkably, after adding an Al2O3 layer under MoS2, the PL intensity enhancement up to 209 times was achieved in the sandwich-like hybrid system. Compared with the hybrid with single-layer SPs, the sandwich-like hybrid system with double-layer Ag SPs exhibited an obvious blue shift as a result of the selective enhancement of the A0 exciton in MoS2. These results demonstrate that MoS2/Ag SP hybrid nanosystems have significant implications for sensing and photoelectronic devices.

Synergetic effect of the interface electric field and the plasmon electromagnetic field in Au-Ag alloy mediated Z-type heterostructure for photocatalytic hydrogen production and CO 2 reduction

Abstract:The challenge of synergistically optimizing different mechanisms limits the further improvement of plasmon-mediated photocatalytic activities. In this work, the CdS/Au-Ag/B-TiO 2 photocatalyst, combining a heterojunction structure with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), is prepared by a high-temperature hydrogen reduction and hot solvent method. The novel synergistic interaction at the interface between the electric field and the plasmon electromagnetic field drives effective charge separation with improved photocatalytic efficiency. The Cd3Ti2 catalyst exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity, and the H 2 generation efficiency under the full solar spectrum is 15.97 mmol⋅h −1 ⋅g −1 with good stability as high as 81.3% in 24 h cycles. The CH 4 and CO precipitation performances are achieved at 14.2 μmol⋅h −1 ⋅g −1 and 113.9 μmol⋅h −1 ⋅g −1 , respectively, in the CO 2 RR process. The design of the synergistic mechanism of the dual electric field offers an important development in the field of plasma-mediated photoredox catalysis.

Abstract:The 2 core-shell structure with an ultra-thin shell of WS2 (3 ∼ 7 nm) was synthesized.The electron transfer mechanism was detected by the in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.The hydrogen production of 2 could reach to 356% of the pure WS2.The LSPRs effect created hot electrons, and the hot electrons conquered the Schottky barrier formed between WS2 and AgNWs.The hot electron transition of noble materials to catalysis accelerated by localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) was detected by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ISI-XPS) in this article. This paper synthesized an Ag Nanowire (AgNW) @ WS2 core-shell structure, with an ultra-thin shell of WS2 (3 ∼ 7nm), and characterized its photocatalytic properties. The 2 core-shell structure exhibited different surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) effects by changing shell thickness, indicating that the effect of AgNW could be controlled by WS2 shell. Furthermore, the hydrogen production of 2 could reach to 356% of that of pure WS2. The hot electrons arising from the LSPRs effect broke through the Schottky barrier between WS2 and AgNW and transferred to the WS2 shell, whose photocatalytic effect was thus enhanced.
