Abstract:The need for an excellent antibacterial material that is sufficiently powerful to never develop bacterial resistance is urgent. In this study, a series of novel polyacrylonitrile-based fibres with chelated Ag ions (referred to as Ag-SH-PANF) were prepared by a two-step chemical modification process: grafting and chelating. The properties of the as-prepared Ag-SH-PANF were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The antibacterial activities of Ag-SH-PANF were examined against pathogenic bacteria, and an antibacterial mechanism was explicated based on the release of Ag ions from the fibres' surfaces. The results showed that, although chelation occurred between the Ag ions and the grafted amino, sulfhydryl and disulfide groups, Ag-SH-PANF retained its fine microstructure and thermal stability. Moreover, Ag-SH-PANF displayed excellent antibacterial ability against pathogenic bacteria as well as good washing durability. In terms of the antibacterial mechanism, Ag ions are the main bactericidal agents in the role of catalysts and are not consumed in the antibacterial process. Nonetheless, a relatively higher concentration of Ag ions can accelerate the bactericidal process.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by a facile, mild and green method using dopamine as a reducing and stabilizing agent and introduced to waterborne polyurethane (WPU) via in situ emulsification method to prepare antibacterial nanocomposite films. The formation of AgNPs was characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and XRD. The dispersion of AgNPs was confirmed by TEM and thermal stability of waterborne polyurethane/Ag (WPU/Ag) nanocomposites was confirmed by TGA. The results showed that AgNPs were uniformly dispersed in the WPU matrix. The introduction of AgNPs significantly improved the thermal stability of WPU films. With incorporation of 0.1 wt. % of AgNPs, a five-fold increase in the tensile strength was achieved without sacrificing the ultimate strain. The WPU/Ag nanocomposite films showed antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a convenient, efficient, and environmentally benign strategy to achieving antimicrobial and antiadhesive purposes using a silver-zwitterion nanocomposite. The synthesis of the nanocomposite relies on loading zwitterionic polymer brushes with Ag+ precursor ions, followed by their in situ reduction to Ag nanoparticle by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Both poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (pSBMA) and poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) (pCBMA) have been studied as matrices for the embedding of silver. Well-dispersed silver nanoparticles are embedded into pCBMA matrices. The obtained pCBMA-silver hybrid (CB-Ag) is capable of killing bacteria upon contact and releasing dead bacteria under wet conditions. Results suggest the feasibility of using this nanocomposite system as a robust and reliable antimicrobial and antiadhesive platform for the prevention of microbial colonization.
In Situ Reduction of Silver Nanoparticles/Urushiol-Based Polybenzoxazine Composite Coatings with Enhanced Antimicrobial and Antifouling Performances

Abstract:Marine anti-fouling coatings represent an efficient approach to prevent and control the marine biofouling. However, a significant amount of antifouling agent is added to improve the static antifouling performance of the coatings, which leads to an issue whereby static antifouling performance conflicts with eco-friendly traits. Herein, this work reports an in situ reduction synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within polymers to produce composite coatings, aiming to solve the aforementioned issue. Firstly, urushiol-based benzoxazine monomers were synthesized by the Mannich reaction, using an eco-friendly natural product urushiol and n-octylamine and paraformaldehyde as the reactants. Additionally, AgNPs were obtained through the employment of free radicals formed by phenolic hydroxyl groups in the urushiol-based benzoxazine monomers, achieved by the in situ reduction of silver nitrate in benzoxazine. Then, the urushiol-based benzoxazine/AgNPs composite coatings were prepared by the thermosetting method. AgNPs exhibit broad-spectrum and highly efficient antimicrobial properties, with a low risk to human health and a minimal environmental impact. The composite coating containing a small amount of AgNPs (≤1 wt%) exhibits effective inhibition against various types of bacteria and marine microalgae in static immersion, thereby displaying outstanding antifouling properties. This organic polymer and inorganic nanoparticle composite marine antifouling coating, with its simple preparation method and eco-friendliness, presents an effective solution to the conflict between static antifouling effectiveness and environmental sustainability in marine antifouling coatings.

Abstract:In this study, Ag@SiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized using the Stöber method and then physically mixing with MPS functionalized poly (styrene-co-acrylate) (PSA) emulsion to obtain a novel antibacterial composite material (PSA/Ag@SiO 2 ). The dispersion of composite latexes was improved by the formation of Si-O-Si covalent bonds, and the migration of AgNPs on the surface of composite films enhanced their antimicrobial activity. Analysis of UV-Vis absorption spectra, TEM images, XPS and XRD data confirmed the core-shell structure of Ag@SiO 2 and the successful coating of AgNPs by SiO 2 . TEM micrographs showed that Ag@SiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the composite latexes, with an average particle size of 198 nm for PSA/Ag@SiO 2 composite latexes, larger than that of PSA latexes (162 nm). FTIR spectra also indicated the presence of Si-O-Si covalent bonds resulting from the sol-gel reaction between MPS functionalized PSA with Ag@SiO 2 . XPS and WCA characterization revealed the disruption of the core-shell structure of Ag@SiO 2, leading to the migration of AgNPs to the air-film interface. The results of antibacterial activity demonstrated that PSA/Ag@SiO 2 composite films displayed antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus , and the former displayer a slightly better antibacterial activity than the latter. The water-based acrylic polymer coatings with antibacterial properties explored in current work have various applications in wood paints, varnishes, metal protection, decorative systems and other related fields.

Abstract:CS@Ag as an antibacterial agent endows BHET‐based polyurethane with good mechanical properties and antimicrobial properties. Herein, an efficient and rapid one‐step approach to construct CS@Ag nanohybrids through in‐situ reduction of AgNO3 with L‐ascorbic acid using chitosan (CS) as carrier only at room temperature was presented. Novel polyurethane/CS@Ag composite films with remarkable properties were fabricated via the reaction of CS@Ag nanohybrid as an antibacterial and reinforcing agent with bis(2‐hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET)‐based polyurethane. With the increase of CS@Ag content, the antibacterial rate for polyurethane against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli increases. The antibacterial rate of polyurethane with 20 phr CS@Ag against S. aureus is 85.5%, and that containing 30 phr CS@Ag against E. coli is 94.9%. Thereby, the synergistic effect of CS and Ag can effectively improve the antibacterial rate of polyurethane. Meanwhile, the bond strength and tensile strength of polyurethane containing 20 phr CS@Ag are up to 8.72 MPa (improved by 74.3%) and 20.1 MPa (enhanced by 130.5%), respectively. Indeed, this work may unlock new possibilities for developing antibacterial and enhanced polyurethanes, which are expected to applied in the medical devices, food packaging, and automotive industries. Highlights CS@Ag was efficiently fabricated by in‐situ reduction via a one‐step approach. BHET is used as a novel chain extender for PU. CS@Ag is able to fully exert the synergistic effect of CS and Ag. CS@Ag endows PU with high strength and excellent antimicrobial properties.

Abstract:The development of environmental-friendly antibacterial agents with high efficiency and low cost has become the focus of attention. In this work, the Ag nanoparticles doped into chitosan (Ag NPs-CS) were synthesized by a green and facile method, and the samples were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The antibacterial tests implied that Ag NPs-CS obtained from glucose (G-Ag NPs-CS) exhibited the excellent antimicrobial activities against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) microbes. Besides, the utilization of antibacterial agents in polymeric materials plays an significant role in healthy living. The aim is to impart the antibacterial properties and maintain/improve the mechanical properties. Therefore, the G-Ag NPs-CS with 5 wt% Ag was chosen as the optimal additive to endow polypropylene with antimicrobial activity via a simple melt blending method. The results demonstrated that the suppression of bacteria proliferation was enhanced with increasing the amount of antibacterial agent, and the microorganisms were almost killed when the content reached to 8 wt%. Meanwhile, the considerable improvement in elastic modulus and impact strength along with a slight decrease of elongation at break provided the evidence that Ag NPs-CS/PP nanocomposites were the promising candidate for practical applications.

Abstract:In this work, quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) functionalized fluorinated copolymer tethered hydroxyl groups were synthesized by free radical polymerization. And then novel liquid-repellent and antibacterial nanocomposite coatings were prepared via cross-linking the fluorinated copolymer and poly(urea-formaldehyde) nanoparticles (PUF NPs) containing active methylol groups with hexamethylene diisocyanate. The surface physical and chemical properties of the nanocomposite coating were systematically characterized by a series of measurements, demonstrating that the liquid-repellent surface with a dual hierarchical structure was obtained by the introduction of PUF NPs. The nanocomposite coating displayed superb self-cleaning and liquid-repellent properties, and could also maintain its superhydrophobicity even after 16 abrasion cycles and 20 cycles of cross-cut tape test. Moreover, the nanocomposite coating with over 0.11% surface concentration of N+ exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. These results conclusively indicated that nanocomposite coatings had great promise for potential application in a wide range of practical fields.

Abstract:New antibacterial polyurethane/chitosan nanocomposites were prepared from waterborne polyurethane (WPU) and water-soluble hydroxylpropyl chitosan (HPCS) in this paper. The structures and properties of WPU/HPCS nanocomposites were analyzed with infrared spectroscopy (IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal analysis, tensile test, and microcalorimetric analysis. The results from IA and TEM indicated that WPU latex particles as core were coated with HPCS as shell to form core shell nano-structure by the ionic interaction of anionic carboxyl of WPU and cationic amino of HPCS. The addition of HPCS enhanced the mechanical strength but resulted in the continuous decrease of the enlongation at break for WPU/HPCS nanocomposites. The mechanical strength reached a maximum of 2.5 times of the pure WPU value when the HPCS content was 15 wt%. And also, the incorporation of HPCS into polyurethane matrix caused the improvement of thermal stability and thermal transition for the nanocomposites. With the increased of HPCS content, the swelling ratio of the nanocomposites in organic solvents decreased, whereas it increased in water together with the hydrolytic degree in PBS. The obtained WPU/HPCS nanocomposites had antibacterial activity from the microcalorimetric results. The addition of HPCS could postpone the growth of Escherichia coli, but not completely inhibited the growth of target bacteria.
Self-Cleaning Antibacterial Composite Coating of Fluorinated Acrylic Resin and Ag/SiO2 Nanoparticles with Quaternary Ammonium

Abstract:With improvements in living standards, the demand for antibacterial self-cleaning coatings has significantly increased. In this work, self-cleaning coatings with antibacterial properties were fabricated by spray-coating a composite of fluorinated acrylic resin and Ag/SiO2 nanoparticles with quaternary ammonium salts. The synergistic action of the quaternary ammonium salts and silver nanostructures caused the coating to show a dual antibacterial effect. The Ag/SiO2 nanoparticles roughened the coating's surface and, in combination with the fluorinated chains, provided the surface a superhydrophobic self-cleaning property with a contact angle of 156° and a sliding angle of less than 2°. Notably, the composite coating withstood 100 abrasion cycles without losing its superhydrophobicity and the contact angle is still exceeded 150° after 60 h of immersion solutions with different pH values, demonstrating outstanding wear resistance and acid/alkali stability. The incorporation of nanostructured antibacterial agents was effective in improving the roughness and antibacterial properties of the low-surface-energy resin, resulting in a self-cleaning antibacterial composite coating. This method may pave a new route for the design of functional coating materials with excellent overall performance.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel approach by incorporating pristine ZnO nanorods and Ag nanoparticles decorated ZnO nanorods into a polyurethane foam matrix. This synergistic combination aims to enhance the foam's antibacterial properties while investigating its impact on mechanical strength. Nanoparticles and prepared nanopolymer were characterized by different methods like XRD, TEM, SEM, and EDS. The mechanical characteristics and antibacterial properties of prepared polyurethane composites were investigated in the presence of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. A much higher level than reported in the literature was found for PU films filled with ZnO nanorods. Incorporating nanoparticles into polyurethane nanocomposites has been demonstrated to significantly improve polyurethane's antibacterial properties. The results revealed that ZnO/PU antibacterial efficiency decreased with increasing ZnO nanofiller content, while AgNPs@ZnO/PU composite antibacterial efficiency increased with increasing AgNPs@ZnO nanofiller content. Also, the weak coordinate bond between ZnO and Ag in the PU chain extender was demonstrated. Increasing the ZnO content to 1.4 wt% resulted in greater Young's modulus and tensile strength, which increased when the ZnO content was increased further. Such a dual-functional enhancement holds promise for applications requiring both antimicrobial efficacy and mechanical integrity.

Abstract:Preparation of Ag nanoparticles with high antibacterial activities and low adverse effects is urgently needed to apply to the medical and consumer products. In this study, a facile, one-step hydrothermal method has been developed to synthesize proanthocyanidins-functionalized Ag nanoparticles in aqueous solution. UV absorption spectra measurement indicated that the obtained Ag nanomaterials are mainly spherical in shape. FTIR results implied that the poly flavonoids moiety of proanthocyanidins have specific interactions with the surface of Ag nanoparticles. HR-TEM and XRD determination revealed that the Ag nanoparticles had a shell-core structure and the Ag core possessed a highly crystalline structure. Antibacterial tests demonstrated that the proanthocyanidins-functionalized-Ag nanoparticles have high bactericidal efficiency against both bacterial and fungus. Further taking into account their excellent stability, the proanthocyanidins-functionalized Ag nanoparticles in present study have the potential to be applied to the products required for the long-acting antibacterial action.
Synthesis of Carboxyl Cellulose Nanocrystals/Copper Nanohybrids to Endow Waterborne Polyurethane Film with Improved Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties

Abstract:The multifunctional nanohybrid fillers have attracted widespread attention in the field of polymer nanocomposites. In this study, carboxyl cellulose nanocrystals/copper nanoparticles (TCNC/Cu NP) nanohybrids were prepared by in situ growth of copper ions on the modified carboxyl CNC, and further doped into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) via solution blending. TEM, FTIR, XRD, and UV–vis analysis were used to characterize the morphology, composition, crystallization and structure of the as-prepared nanohybrid. TCNC/Cu NP nanohybrids exhibited good dispersion and interface compatibility in WPU matrix. The nanocomposite film obtained significantly enhanced mechanical, thermal stability and scratch resistance properties, which was attributed to a hydrogen bond network structure formed in the WPU matrix. Additionally, colony count method was performed to test antibacterial properties of various films. Compared to the pure WPU film, all of nanocomposite films showed better antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial ratio of the WPU nanocomposite film with the addition of TCNC/Cu NP (1:1) reach 99%. Furthermore, the results of a copper ion sustained release experiment showed that the nanocomposite film had a long-term release effect, which was ascribed to the strong bonding between TCNC/Cu NP nanohybrids and WPU matrix. Thus, Cu NP was firmly embedded in the hydrogen bonding network structure formed. This work gives a new approach to prepare the antibacterial WPU film with well mechanical properties.

Abstract:A highly water-soluble and uniformly dispersed concentrate of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) hydrosols were synthesized using a chemical reduction method. The Ag NPs hydrosols exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity against sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and can serve as a biocide for anti-corrosion purposes. The addition of 50 ppm Ag NPs hydrosols reduced the corrosion rate by over 91% in the presence of SRB biofilm compared to untreated conditions. Numerous Ag NPs adsorbed onto the cell wall, with some internalizing and entering the cell, resulting in cytoplasmic efflux and DNA damage, ultimately leading to cell death.
Controllable Deposition of Ag Nanoparticles on Various Substrates Via Interfacial Polyphenol Reduction Strategy for Antibacterial Application

Abstract:The deposition of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on different substrates is promising in antibacterial applications. But it is limited by the aggregation problem and complex deposition procedure of Ag NPs. Herein, facile fabrication of antibacterial substrates with controllable deposition of Ag NPs via polyphenol reduction strategy is presented. Polyphenol with surface independent coating property is used to in situ deposit Ag NPs on diverse substrates (e.g., cotton textile, copper foil, steel sheet, iron sheet, glass slide, rubber and plastic sheet) via the reduction of Ag+. The modified substrate shows several unique properties, including high color maintenance (4.7 % change from the original), sustained and pH-responsive Ag+ release behavior (about 40-10 % of Ag+ ions at pH values of 4-8 at day 9, respectively), large diameters of inhibition zones (over 1 cm) and low minimum inhibitory concentrations (0.1 mg mL-1). The continuous contamination tests (5 cycles with the almost same effectiveness) and long-term stability analysis (over 25 days) manifest excellent recycling performance and stable antibacterial benefits. Finally, the results of practical applications on mask, shoe-pad and fresh box materials show that all the modified materials inhibited E. coli and S. aureus by more than 95 %. This work provides a versatile interfacial polyphenol reduction strategy for depositing Ag nanoparticles on various substrates. Such Ag-deposited product could be used for packaging and clothing sanitation.
Polyurethane/Nanosilver-Doped Halloysite Nanocomposites: Thermal, Mechanical Properties, and Antibacterial Properties

Abstract:In this study, the researchers successfully embellished the surface of halloysite (Ag/HNTs) with silver using halloysite, silver nitrate (AgNO3), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The researchers then prepared polyurethane that contained pyridine ring by using 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG) as the hard chain segment and the soft chain segment of polyurethane (PU), as well as 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (2,6-PDM) as the chain extension agent. This was followed by the preparation of Ag/HNTs/PUs nanocomposite thin films, achieved by mixing Ag/HNTs with different ratios into polyurethane that contains pyridine ring. First, the Ag/HNTs powders were analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Subsequently, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to examine the dispersibility of Ag/HNTs in PU, whereas the thermal stability and the viscoelasticity of Ag/HNTs/PU were examined using thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis. When the mechanical properties of Ag/HNTs/PU were tested using a universal strength tester, the results indicated a maximum increase of 109.5% in tensile strength. The researchers then examined the surface roughness and the hydrophobic ability of the Ag/HNTs/PU thin films by using atomic force microscopy and water contact angle. Lastly, antibacterial testing on Escherichia coli revealed that when the additive of Ag/HNTs reached 2.0 wt%, 99.3% of the E. coli were eliminated. These results indicated that the addition of Ag/HNTs into PU could enhance the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and antibacterial properties of PU, implying the potential of Ag/HNTs-02 as biomedicine material.

Abstract:Nano-silver is characterized by broad-spectral, strong and stable antibacterial properties, which make it a promising material in coating applications. However, the efficiency of nano-silver is generally low in the coating of films. Here, we developed a series of highly active and durable silver ions–nano-silver antimicrobial agents for powder coatings. To optimize antimicrobial activity and durability, two different nano-silver generation methods, i.e., in situ and ex situ methods combined with different carrier materials, i.e., zeolite with high ion-exchange ability and montmorillonite of layered structure were adopted and investigated. All four antibacterial additives show high activity with a reduction rate of over 99.99% and R value of over 5. The ex situ generated nano-silver antibacterial agents with both carriers exhibit higher activity in the initial antibacterial property and antibacterial durability that the coating films are able to maintain over 99% antimicrobial reduction after 20 cycles (1200 times) of soap solution wiping. They also show a lower yellowish color difference of less than three compared to the films with in situ generation method. The one with montmorillonite as carrier shows the stronger antibacterial property with an R value of 5.88 and slightly better film appearance of lower color difference, smaller reduction in gloss and increase in haze as compared to zeolite carrier due to the layered structure.

Abstract:Nanocomposites are effective methods for the treatment of microbial infections. In this work, zinc oxide nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple and mild method, and successfully loaded on polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (PDAMt) to prepare nanocomposites (ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt) with potent antibacterial ability. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that the nanoparticles in ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt were quasi-spherical, and the particle size ranged from 5 nm to 45 nm. The energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS)-mapping verified the presence of Zn, Ag, O, Al, Si and C elements in the synthesized ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt was also tested against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Due to the synergistic antibacterial effect between zinc oxide nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles, ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt exhibited higher antiseptic activity than silver nanoparticles supported polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (Ag/PDA-Mt) and zinc oxide nanoparticles supported polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (ZnO/PDA-Mt). The biocompatibility of ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt was evaluated by cytotoxicity assay. The results demonstrated that the ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt nanocomposites have potential for antibacterial applications.
