Abstract:Setting guard band is an important way to mitigate the physical layer impairments like channel interference and cross-talk interference in Elastic Optical Networks (EONs). The goal of this paper is to study the optimal guard band size against non-linear noise caused by cross channel interferences. Through a classical routing and spectrum assignment algorithm, we investigate the total blocking probability as a function of guard band size. Simulation results demonstrate the inverse impact on Quality of Transmission (QoT) blocking and resource blocking. We also study the optimal guard band under different non-linear interference and available spectrum resource. The results show that, the optimal guard band should be larger for strong non-linear optical networks, and be unchanged for wide available spectrum. The observation can provide an important guidance for the planning of EONs so as to minimize the total blocking probability.
