Abstract:Organic mechanoluminescence (ML) materials have attracted much attention for their various application prospects in luminescent devices. However, the pace of their development has been greatly limited by the unclear inherent mechanism. Herein, halogen atoms are systematically introduced into ML for the first time to deeply explore the light‐emitting process and internal mechanism. Thus, a series of triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives is obtained with diverse ML properties, including TPA‐oF, TPA‐mF, TPA‐pF, TPA‐oCl, TPA‐mCl, TPA‐pCl, TPA‐oBr, TPA‐mBr, TPA‐pBr, and TPA‐ph. Among them, with the introduced chlorine and bromine atoms in the para‐position of the phenyl ring in TPA‐ph, the resultant TPA‐pCl and TPA‐pBr demonstrate bright ML; whereas the introduced fluorine atom in TPA‐pF drastically reduces the ML performance. Careful analysis of their optical properties and crystal structures coupled with theoretical calculations confirms that different halogen atoms in the TPA derivatives can really lead to diverse intermolecular interactions, and the strong intermolecular interactions are actually beneficial for the ML effect by reducing energy loss through nonradiative relaxation channels under a stimulus of mechanical force; however, unsatisfying ML performance is observed in the crystal with an overtight molecular packing, on account of the unbreakable crystals with high rigidity.

Abstract:To achieve materials exhibiting both mechanoluminescent and mechanochromic activities, an asymmetrical triphenylamine derivative, DCTPAA, containing one aldehyde group and two cyano groups, was designed and synthesized. DCTPAA displayed solvatochromism, with a red-shifted emission as the solvent polarity increased, indicating the donor-acceptor structure's inherent property. It emitted blue fluorescence in its pristine crystal state, but exhibited green fluorescence upon grinding. The blue fluorescence could be restored after the ground powder was treated with dichloromethane vapor, showcasing reversible mechanochromism. The X-ray diffraction pattern suggested that the mechanochromic process was accompanied by a reversible phase change between the crystalline and amorphous states. Notably, despite the centrosymmetric space group of the DCTPAA crystal, the material displayed strong mechanoluminescence emission. The intermolecular packing analysis and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the strong intermolecular interaction should contribute to the mechanoluminescence.

Polymorphic Triphenylamine Derivative Showing Aggregation-Induced Emission and High-Contrast Mechanical Force-induced Blue Shift

Abstract:Mechanical force-induced, high-contrast blue-shift luminescent mechanochromic (MC) molecules have rarely been reported. Herein, we designed and synthesized an AIE luminogens (AIEgens) triphenylamine derivative N, N -diphenyl-4-(6-phenyl-[2,2′-bipyridin]-4-yl)aniline ( DPTPA ). Three different emission wavelengths from blue crystals ( B-DPTPA ), sky-blue crystals ( S-DPTPA ), and green crystals ( G-DPTPA ) were obtained by culturing the crystals under different crystallization conditions. All three crystal polymorphs showed high solid luminescent efficiency, each of which was sensitive to external pressure and was accompanied by significant fluorescence blue shift. Under a mechanical force, B-DPTPA shows a 12 nm blue shift, S-DPTPA fluorescence color changed from sky-blue to blue with an increase emission and G-DPTPA changed its color from green (510 nm) to sky-blue (428 nm) with an 82 nm blue shift. Such obvious color change and large blue shift were rarely been reported. Characterization of the photophysical properties, theoretical calculations, hydrostatic pressure, powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray single crystal structures showed that three crystal polymorphs of DPTPA originated from single molecules, space interactions, molecular pairs (dimers), and the blue shift of B-DPTPA, S-DPTPA, G-DPTPA were ascribed to the solid-state morphology transition from crystal to amorphous due to the destruction of space interactions and dimers. This study provides the relationship between the molecular packings and the blue shift emission of AIEgens materials under mechanical forces is understood in the molecular level.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a unique photo-physical phenomenon and has become an emerging and hot research area. With the enthusiastic efforts paid by researchers, hundreds of AIE-active luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated but heterocyclic AIEgens are rarely reported. Recently, we enriched the family of AIEgens and reported a pyrazine-based AIEgen of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), which could be facilely functionalized by a post-synthetic strategy. In this work, we further expanded the TPP-based AIE system by covalently attaching one, two or four electron-donating triphenylamine moieties to the TPP core via Suzuki coupling, and TPP-TPA, TPP-2TPA and TPP-4TPA were produced, respectively. Thanks to their donor-pi-acceptor structures, these luminogens exhibit multifunctional properties, such as excellent thermal stability (up to 504 degrees C), large molar absorptivity, bright emission in the solid state (quantum yields up to 35.2%), solvatochromism, and high two-photon absorption cross-sections (up to 480 GM). Furthermore, using TPP-TPA as the emitting layer, a triple-layer device was fabricated and a turn-on voltage, maximum luminance, current efficiency, power efficiency, and external quantum efficiency of 3.7 V, 17 459 cd m(-2), 5.49 cd A(-1), 3.18 lm W-1 and 2.88% were realized, respectively. These results indicate a huge potential to develop high-tech applications based on these TPP-based AIEgens.

Abstract:Charge-transfer (CT) state is becoming a useful excited state to design next-generation luminescence materials for high-performance organic light-emitting diode (OLED). However, strong CT state usually causes serious decrease in photoluminescence (PL) efficiency due to the small overlap between HOMO and LUMO. In order to harvest both high exciton utilization and high PL efficiency in fluorescent OLEDs, figuring out the strategy of fine modification of CT component in excited state through structural modulation is important. In this work, four donor–acceptor structure triphenylamine (TPA) - acridine (AC) isomers (TPA-9AC, TPA-1AC, TPA-2AC and TPA-3AC) were designed and synthesized to investigate structure-property relationship between isomerization effect and excited state properties. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and solvatochromic absorption, emission and photoluminescence decay spectra are carried out for the deep understanding of their emissive state character. The four isomers exhibit gradually increased PL efficiency from low-polarity hexane to medium-polarity tetrahydrofuran (THF), which could be assigned to the formation of hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) states and effectively suppressed non-radiative transition arised from acridine in medium-polarity solvents. Among four isomers, TPA-3AC achieved the best EL performance, due to the proper LE and CT compositions in the emissive state, demonstrating that isomerization of donor and acceptor functional moieties is an effective approach for structural modification for high-efficiency fluorescent OLED emitters.

Abstract:Although some bright, organic mechanoluminescence (ML) luminogens with aggregation‐induced emission properties and twisted molecular structures are recently reported, those with planar structures and bright ML and their related effective design strategies are not yet explored, partially due to aggregation‐caused quenching in luminogens with planar structures. Herein, using the unique solid‐state packing style of pyrene, bright dual monomer‐excimer‐ML and excimer‐ML from two pyrene derivatives (Py‐Bpin and Py‐Br) with a simple, planar molecular structure are reported for the first time, and two analogs of pyrene and Py‐H are used for comparison. These four luminogens display similar optical properties in dilute solution but different luminescent properties in the solid state, mainly due to their different molecular packing. Interestingly, pyrene is mechanochromism (MC)‐ and ML‐inactive, while Py‐H is MC‐active, Py‐Bpin is MC‐ and ML‐active, and Py‐Br is ML‐active. The relationship between molecular packing and ML/MC properties is confirmed by analyzing single‐crystal structures and related experimental results, providing important information to further understand the mysterious ML process and opening a new way to design efficient luminogens with both MC and ML. A new class of mechanically responsive organic luminescent materials with planar structures is designed and synthesized. The synergistic interplay between the overlap and intermolecular interactions results in significantly different luminescent properties in the studied four compounds (pyrene and three pyrene derivatives). Interestingly, bright dual monomer‐excimer‐mechanoluminescence (ML) and excimer‐ML are first observed with Py‐Bpin and Py‐Br, respectively.

Abstract:Three novel gold(I) complexes based on triphenylamine, carbazole or tetraphenylethylene moiety have been successfully designed and synthesized. Meanwhile, their structures were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Their solid-state luminescence characteristics were surveyed by photoluminescence spectroscopy, and their distinct mechanical stimulus-responsive behaviors in the solid state were also investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Interestingly, the solid-state phosphorescence and emission lifetimes of these mononuclear gold(I) complexes 1–3 could be tuned by introducing different fluorophores involving triphenylamine, carbazole or tetraphenylethylene. Furthermore, luminogen 1 exhibited switchable mechanochromic luminescence behavior with color change from yellow to colorless, and the solid-state luminescence on-off mechanochromism between yellow-green and colorless of luminogen 2 could also be observed. However, no mechanochromism phenomenon was observed for tetraphenylethene-containing luminogen 3. The powder X-ray diffraction results suggested that the unusual high-contrast mechanochromism characteristics of luminogens 1 and 2 could be attributed to a crystalline-to- amorphous morphology transition.

Abstract:Two TPA-based star-shaped mechanochromic materials, namely ester-TPA and COOH-TPA, were designed and synthesized using TPA as the core and benzoic acid and methyl benzoate as the arms, and then importantly the moiety effect on the luminescent property of the materials was investigated. They displayed similar solvatochromic effects in different solvents for the D-p-A motif with charge transfer from TPA to the benzoic acid or methyl benzoate moiety, which was confirmed by the consistent UV-vis absorption and large differences displayed when dropped into different solvents as well as by orbital distribution analysis using density functional theory. However, they showed different mechanochromism performances, which were investigated by analysing the fluorescent spectrum, fluorescent quantum yield and fluorescence lifetime. The COOH-based emitter showed a better performance with a relatively obvious red-shift for CIE (0.17, 0.35) to (0.26, 0.49) together with transformation from crystalline to amorphous states, indicating the molecular packing pattern had been destroyed, which could be speculated from single-crystal structure analysis and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, COOH-TPA could also respond to alkalis, leading to a blue-shift and band broadening of the spectra, which might be ascribed to a reduced charge transfer from TPA to benzoic acid owing to deprotonation.

Abstract:Luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (ME) property have attracted considerable interests for their promising applications in light-emitting and display devices and fluorescent probes for chemo- and biosensors. Tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives are the most attractive species for their notable AIE performance, facile synthesis, and flexible structure modification. To study the effects of donor and acceptor substitutions and extend the applications of TPE-based materials, three TPE kindred, TTPE, BTPEFN, and BATPEFN, are employed. TTPE film displays efficient green fluorescence (lambda(em), = 494 nm, Phi(F) = 100%), evident AIE characteristic (alpha(AIE) 154), and reversible mechanochromism by grinding-fuming: from blue (lambda(em), = 472 nm) to green emission (lambda(em) = 505 nm). Replacing two phenyls by two cyano (A) groups on the central TPE moiety derives BTPEFN, whose film shows efficient orange fluorescence (lambda(em) = 575 nm, Phi(F) = 100%) and evident ATE (alpha(AIE) = 13). The mechanochromic behavior of BTPEFN (from yellow to orange emission, lambda(em) from 541 to 563 nm) is reversible by repeating both the grinding-fuming and grinding-annealing processes. The cyano groups bestow BTPEFN with evident intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) property, the emission color can be tuned from green to red-orange by changing solvent from hexane to THF, while the emission of TTPE shows much less response to solvent polarity. Cyanos also endow BTPEFN with better self-assemble ability in proper conditions, and the obtained regular microribbons emit bright green fluorescence. Further decoration of BTPEFN with N,N-diethyamino (D) groups results in BATPEFN. Due to the cooperative effects of D and A groups, BATPEFN shows dramatic red-shifted fluorescence (lambda(em) = 713 nm), evident ICT process, and enhanced solvatochromism (from red to infrared).

Abstract:Multifunctional and mechanochromic optoelectronic materials are of significant importance in both academic and technical aspects. In this contribution, a novel D A conjugate (AN2TPAN), consisting of arylamine and two triphenylacrylonitrile (TPAN) units, with sterically crowded and remarkably twisted conformations, has been carefully designed and synthesized. It shows typical intramolecular charge transfer, aggregation-induced emission, and aggregation-enhanced two-photon absorption characteristics. Moreover, it exhibits more than three emission colors in the solid state upon mechanical grinding. Such multicolor mechanochromism for solid emitters under mild conditions is rarely reported. A multilayer nondoped OLED device of AN2TPAN is fabricated and performs excellently, whose maximal current and external quantum efficiencies are as high as 10.7 cd/A and 3.3%, respectively. The multifunctionality and multicolor mechanochromism of AN2TPAN make it promising in optoelectronic applications.
New Tetraphenylpyridinium-Based Luminogens with Aggregation-Induced Emission Characteristics

Abstract:The research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has drawn increasing interests in the past decade. With the efforts scientists paid, a variety of AIE systems have been developed, among which the tetraphenylethelene and silole derivatives are the most studied. Development of new AIE systems could further enrich the AIE molecules and promote the development of AIE area. In this communication, we prepared a new AIE system based on 1,2,4,6-tetraphenylpyridinium ions according to the restriction of intramolecular rotation mechanism. These molecules could be facilely synthesized via one-step and one-pot reaction. The ionic AIE-active molecules could find wide application in sensing and optoelectronic areas.

Abstract:Four newly synthesized tetraphenylethene or triphenylethylene-modified fluorescent dyes were reported. All synthesized luminophores displayed typical aggregation-induced emission effects, with bright and varying aggregative-state emission involving multiple fluorescence colors containing yellow, orange, green, and yellow-green. In addition, these luminogens also showed different fluorescence in the solid state. Meanwhile, their solid-state fluorescence could be effectively switched by mechanical grinding and solvent fuming except for luminogen 4. More specifically, luminogen 1 exhibited a weak mechanofluorochromic response with a color change from yellow to yellowish brown, whereas luminogen 4 displayed negligible mechanofluorochromism behavior. In stark contrast to luminogens 1 and 4, luminogens 2 and 3 in the solid state were characterized by reversible high-contrast mechanochromic phenomena involving distinct fluorescent color changes from green to orange and from blue to yellow, respectively. These contrasting fluorescence changes were due to the morphological conversion from stable crystalline state to metastable amorphous state.

Abstract:Nonplanar D-A phenothiazine derivative (PBA), in which phenothiazine and formylphenyl groups act as donor and acceptor, respectively, was designed and synthesized. The PBA emitted weak fluorescence in a solution, and its crystals exhibited weak blue-green emission with a luminescence efficiency of 7.5% under UV light irradiation owing to the lowest singlet (S-1) of n-pi* and the presence of intersystem crossing from S-1 to T-1. A grinding crystal provided a powder with strong yellow-green photoluminescence, whose luminescence efficiency increased by a factor of more than 6 after a mechanical force produced an enhanced TADF and an S-1 of pi-pi*.

Abstract:Two donor-π-acceptor molecules (TPA-TC and 2Br-TPA-TC) with the common backbone of triphenylamine-thiophene carbaldehyde are used to explore the mechanoresponsive luminescence (MRL) properties. Both of them show remarkable solvatochromic effects, and their emission colors in solution could be changed from blue to yellow depending on the solvent polarity. Density function theory calculations indicate that the energy band gap of 2Br-TPA-TC is slightly larger than that of TPA-TC, which could explain their UV/Vis and fluorescence behaviors. It is noted that the green emission of TPA-TC and 2Br-TPA-TC is turned into deeper yellow-green after grinding and recovered via heating, and the two-color emission cycles are reversible. The MRL behaviors associated with the morphology transformation between crystalline and amorphous states could be monitored by powder X-ray diffraction spetra. Single-crystal structural analyses for TPA-TC and 2Br-TPA-TC help to understand the MRL mechanisms, in which the twisted molecules are loosely packed with the affixation of multiple H-bonding interactions and they are susceptible to grinding-induced photoluminescence changes.

Abstract:The development of high-contrast stimulus-responsive materials with excited triplet emission is of great significance for anti-counterfeiting, sensor and memory applications, but remains a challenge. Here, we report a strategy for the rational design of stimulus-responsive phenothiazine derivatives with triplet-related dual emissions and high-contrast mechanochromism guided by Polymorph Prediction. The designed phenothiazine derivatives have the characters of simple structures, a facile synthetic procedure, and a good crystalline nature. We found that the crystals of those derivatives with the potential to form both quasi-axial (ax) and quasi-equatorial (eq) conformations could undergo conformation transition and show significant emission difference (Delta lambda(em)>100 nm) under mechanical force. Meanwhile, all these phenothiazine derivatives exhibit aggregation-induced emission and emit room-temperature phosphorescence or thermally activated delayed fluorescence. The significant luminescent change of these materials under different stimuli gives them promise for applications in encryption and anti-counterfeiting.
