Abstract:•A novel shape memory polymer based on hydroxyethyl cellulose was prepared.•The hydroxyethyl cellulose was crosslinked by graphene oxide and citric acid.•The composites show high mechanical strength due to the synergistic effect.•The composites exhibit excellent water and moisture-induced shape memory performance.
