Abstract:Aromatic polyesters bearing pendent carboxyl functionalities were prepared by interfacial polycondensation of diphenolic acid, bisphenol A and isophthaloyl chloride with tetrabutylammonium chloride as phase transfer catalyst. The copolyester composition was confirmed with HPLC analysis. The polymerization process and composition of the copolyesters were examined by considering influences of reaction temperatures, time, ratio of feeds, agitation speeds.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising biobased aromatic monomer that can be used to synthesize novel biobased polymeric materials, but efficient synthesis of FDCA is still a great challenge to date. In this study, a two-step method is proposed to synthesize FDCA directly from fructose under mild conditions without 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) separation, using commercially available catalysts. In the first step, HMF was formed in 97.1% HPLC yield by dehydrating fructose in DMSO under the catalysis of Amberlyst-15 at 120 degrees C for 1 h. In the second step, the in situ formed HMF was oxidized in 3/1 (w/w) alkaline (K2CO3) H2O/DMSO medium under the catalysis of Pt/C at 100 degrees C for 10 h to form FDCA in 91% HPLC yield. The overall yield of FDCA from fructose reached as high as 88.4%. The conversions of HMF to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA) and HMFCA to 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) are fast, but FFCA to FDCA is a slow and rate-limiting step in HMF oxidation. H2O/DMSO ratio, alkali type, alkali/HMF ratio, and reaction temperature are important factors affecting the reaction rate and selectivity. The synergy between alkaline aqueous solution and DMSO is the key to high FDCA yield.
One-Pot FDCA Diester Synthesis from Mucic Acid and Their Solvent-Free Regioselective Polytransesterification for Production of Glycerol-Based Furanic Polyesters

Abstract:A one pot-two step procedure for the synthesis of diethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate (DEFDC) starting from mucic acid without isolation of the intermediate furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) was studied. Then, the production of three different kinds of furan-based polyesters— polyethylene-2,5-furan dicarboxylate (PEF), polyhydropropyl-2,5-furan dicarboxylate(PHPF) and polydiglycerol-2,5-furandicarboxylate (PDGF)—was realized through a Co(Ac)2·4H2O catalyzed polytransesterification performed at 160 °C between DEFDC and a defined diol furan-based prepolymer or pure diglycerol. In parallel to polymerization process, an unattended regioselective 1-OH acylation of glycerol by direct microwave-heated FDCA diester transesterification led to the formation of a symmetric prepolymer ready for further polymerization and clearly identified by 2D NMR sequences. Furthermore, the synthesis of a more soluble and hydrophilic diglycerol-based furanic polyester was also achieved. The resulting biobased polymers were characterized by NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, DSC, TGA and XRD. The morphologies of the resulted polymers were observed by FE-SEM and the purity of the material by EDX.

Abstract:Recently, we have developed an eco-friendly method for the preparation of a renewable dicarboxylic acid 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from biomass-based 5-hydroxymethylfrufural (HMF). In the present work, we optimized our reported method, which used phosphate buffer and Fe(OH)3 as the stabilizer to improve the stability of potassium ferrate, then got a purified FDCA (up to 99%) in high yield (91.7 wt %) under mild conditions (25 °C, 15 min, air atmosphere). Subsequently, the obtained FDCA, along with 1,6-hexanediol (HDO), which was also made from HMF, were used as monomers for the synthesis of poly(hexylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PHF) via direct esterification, and triphenyl phosphite was used as the antioxidant to alleviate the discoloration problem during the esterification. The intrinsic viscosity, mechanical properties, molecular structure, thermal properties, and degradability of the PHFs were measured or characterized by Koehler viscometer, universal tensile tester, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Derivative Thermogravimetry (DTG), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and weight loss method. The experimental evidence clearly showed that the furan-aromatic polyesters prepared from biomass-based HMF are viable alternatives to the petrochemical benzene-aromatic polyesters, they can serve as low-melting heat bondable fiber, high gas-barrier packaging material, as well as specialty material for engineering applications.

Abstract:The big challenge today is the upgrading of sustainable materials to replace miscellaneous ones from petroleum resources. Thus, a generic bio-based building block lays the foundation of the huge bio-market to green economy. 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a rigid diacid derived from lignocellulose or fructose, represents a great potential as a contender to terephthalic acid (TPA). Recently, studies on the synthesis, modification, and functionalization of bio-based polyesters based on FDCA have attracted widespread attention. To apply furanic polyesters on engineering plastics, packaging materials, electronics, etc., researchers have extended the properties of basic FDCA-based homo-polyesters by directional copolymerization and composite preparation. This review covers the synthesis and performance of polyesters and composites based on FDCA with emphasis bedded on the thermomechanical, crystallization, barrier properties, and biodegradability. Finally, a summary of what has been achieved and the issues waiting to be addressed of FDCA-based polyester materials are suggested.

Abstract:The present research article delves into the preparation of a new class of bio-based polyesters from α,ω-diene furandicarboxylate monomers. In particular, it exploits the use of acyclic diene metathesis polymerisation (ADMET) on 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA)-derived compounds. First, a library of furan-based α,ω-diene monomers was prepared via acid- or base-catalyzed transesterification of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester (FDME) with commercially available alcohols incorporating terminal olefins, i. e., allyl alcohol, but-3-en-1-ol, hex-5-en-1-ol and dec-9-en-1-ol. Then, the novel monomers were subjected to ADMET polymerisation employing different catalysts and reaction conditions. Interestingly, first-generation Grubbs catalyst was found to be the best promoter for ADMET polymerisation. This catalyst allowed the preparation of a new family of bio-based polyesters with molecular weights up to 26.4 kDa, with good thermal stability, and adaptable cis-trans conformations. Results also revealed that the monomer structure had a direct impact on the polymerisation efficiency and the resulting thermal properties. The effect of green bio-based solvents such as Cyrene™, dimethyl isosorbide (DMI) and γ-valerolactone (GVL) on the polymerisation process was also studied. Data collected showed that the solvent concentration influenced both the yield and length of polymers formed. Furthermore, some co-polymerisation experiments were conducted; the successful integration of different monomers in the resulting copolymer was shown to affect the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the resulting materials.

Abstract:A unique strategy for the formation of furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA)-derived esters with methanol and ethylene glycol in concentrated solutions was reported using a six-membered ring acetal of (5-hydroxymethypfurfural (HMF) with 1,3-propanediol in order to improve the economics for the production of polyethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate (PEF), a biobased polyester. Aerobic oxidative esterification with methanol and ethylene glycol in the presence of a CeO2 -supported Au catalyst gave 80-95% yields of methyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate and bis(2-hydroxyethyl)furan-2,5-dicarboxylate from concentrated HMF-acetal solutions (10-20 wt %). Kinetic studies combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to identify two key steps for the conversion of the cyclic acetal ring to the corresponding methyl ester: (i) partial hydrolysis of the acetal ring by OH- ions and (ii) subsequent oxidation of the hemiacetal in solution by molecular O-2 on Au nanoparticles. These results represent a significant contribution not only to cutting-edge conversion technology for renewable biomass feedstocks to PEF-based applications but also to opportunities for the efficient conversion of substrates with a reactive formyl group in high yield.

Herein, a new chemo-enzymatic strategy for generating furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) precursors from sodium gluconate via bio-oxidation and dehydration is presented. By coupling the bio-oxidation of gluconate 5-dehydrogenase with carbonyl reductase PsCR for cofactor regeneration, 5-keto-d-gluconic acid (5KGA), a specific product of d-gluconic acid bio-oxidation and a stable intermediate, was obtained in 99% yield. The statin intermediate ethyl (S)-4-chloro-3-hydroxybutanoate was simultaneously generated as a co-product via cycling cascade catalysis. Subsequently, the yield of the FDCA precursor n-butyl-5-formyl-2-furancarboxylate (nBu-FFCA) generated via5KGA dehydration and esterification reached 77.9%. Key intermediate characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the decarboxylation and dehydration of cyclic 5KGA to furfural was the main side-reaction that prevented a better yield of dehydrated 5KGA. This route demonstrates good sustainability and market competitiveness compared to the existing FDCA synthesis methods.

Abstract:The polymerization of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), one of the key building blocks for the preparation of furan polymers, is often accompanied with side reactions (e.g. decarboxylation). Due to the mild reaction conditions, enzymatic polymerizations became an excellent candidate to address this issue. Here, we present a green and effective method to prepare different furanic-aliphatic poly(ester amide)s (PEAFs) by applying two different approaches. PEAFs with Mw¯ up to 21 kg mol−1 were successfully synthesized by a Novozyme 435-catalyzed polycondensation of dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (DMFDCA) with aliphatic diols, diamines or amino alcohols, using toluene at 90 °C. Additionally, we were able to enhance the sustainability of the entire process by performing the polymerization in ionic liquids – BMIMPF6 and EMIMBF4. Using the ionic liquids (ILs) BMIMPF6 and EMIMBF4 as solvents, we were able to produce PEAFs with Mw¯ up to 7 kg mol−1. The different polarity of the solvents affects the enzyme activity and product solubility, thus also the final molecular weight of the PEAFs. Despite the lower molecular weight, the tested ILs result products with similar characteristics. All obtained PEAFs are semi-crystalline materials and decompose at a temperature around 390 °C with a Tm of around 77–140 °C and Tg of around 11–46 °C. Although still exemplified on the proof-of-concept production of sustainable materials, these findings pave the way to promote the transition from fossil-to bio-based polymers, as well as more environmentally friendly synthetic routes.

Abstract:A series of high‐value bio‐based copoyesters were prepared from a kind of sustainable raw material, 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid. To improve the comprehensive properties of polybutylene furandicarboxylate (PBF), 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (2,5‐FDCA), and aliphatic chain diol 1,8‐octanediol and 1,4‐butanediol were used as monomers to synthesize a series of bio‐based polybutylene glycol‐octanediol 2,5‐furandicarboxylate (PBOF). The results showed that the chemical composition of PBOF could be controlled through the molar ratio of monomers. Compared with PBF, as the proportion of octanediol segments gradually increased, PBOF could gradually transform from semi‐crystalline thermoplastic to amorphous form, and the glass transition temperature (Tg) gradually decreased. The crystallization ability reduced but a part of the crystal area was still retained. The copolyesters still has a decomposition temperature above 370°C, indicating excellent thermal stability. The introduction of the octanediol segment significantly improved the tensile mechanical properties and flexibility of the POBF copolyester. These meet the requirements for the preparation of bio‐based engineering plastics. The water absorption rate of PBOF showed that it may have certain degradable potential. PBOF copolyesters have potential application prospects in bio‐based medical plastics and biodegradable packaging polymer materials after copolymerization modification.

Abstract:Efficient synthesis of valuable platform chemicals from renewable feedstock is a challenging, yet essential strategy for developing technologies that are both economical and sustainable. In the present study, we investigated the synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in a two-step catalytic process starting from sucrose as largely available biomass feedstock. In the first step, 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) was synthesized by hydrolysis and dehydration of sucrose using sulfuric acid in a continuous reactor in 34% yield. In a second step, the resulting reaction solution was directly oxidized to FDCA without further purification over a Au/ZrO2 catalyst with 84% yield (87% selectivity, batch process), corresponding to 29% overall yield with respect to sucrose. This two-step process could afford the production of pure FDCA after the respective extraction/crystallization despite the impure intermediate HMF solution. To demonstrate the direct application of the biomass-derived FDCA as monomer, the isolated product was used for Ugi-multicomponent polymerizations, establishing a new application possibility for FDCA. In the future, this efficient two-step process strategy toward FDCA should be extended to further renewable feedstock.

Abstract:Replacing fossil fuels with renewable, bio‐based alternatives is inevitable for the modern chemical industry, in line with the 12 principles of green chemistry. 2,5‐Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising platform molecule that can be derived from 5‐hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) via sustainable electrochemical oxidation. Herein, we demonstrate TEMPO‐mediated electrooxidation of HMF to FDCA in ElectraSyn 2.0 using inexpensive commercially available electrodes: graphite anode and stainless‐steel cathode, thereby avoiding the often cumbersome electrode preparation. Key parameters such as concentration of HMF, KOH, and catalyst loading were optimized by experimental design. Under the optimized conditions, using only a low amount of TEMPO (5 mol%), high yield and Faradaic efficiency of 96% were achieved within 2.5 hours. Moreover, since FDCA is a monomer of the bio‐based poly(ethylene furanoate), PEF, we aimed to investigate its recovery by depolymerization, which could be of paramount importance in the circular economy of the FDCA. For this, a new polar aprotic solvent, methyl sesamol (MeSesamol), was used, allowing the facile depolymerization of PEF at room temperature with high monomer yields (up to 85%), while the cosolvent MeSesamol was recycled with high efficiency (95–100%) over five reaction cycles.

A novel amine-first strategy suitable for pre-paring both functional and engineering bi-opolyamides: Furfurylamine as the sole furan source of bisfu-ranic dia-mine/diacid monomers

Abstract:Biomass-based polyamides (bioPAs) are renewable materials that are viable alternatives to petroleum-based polyamides in the engineering field. However, the attention to designing functional bioPAs with tunable properties has been limited. Herein, by taking furfurylamine as the sole furan source, we first utilized amine-acid oxidative coversion to prepare bisfuranic diacid monomer directly from bisfuranic diamine monomer(amine-first strtegy), it was totally different to castor oil-based acid-first strategy of preparing PA1010. Then the as-prepared multifunctional diamine/diacid monomers underwent polycondensation to obtain all-furan based bioPAs with or without functinal pendant groups. The properties of bioPAs, incuding glass transition temperatue, degradation character, solubility, etc, can be regulated over a larger range through the design of the spacer structure between two furan rings on diamine monomers. Charged bioPAs with cationic or anionic groups were further developed by postpolymerization modification. The oppositely charged bioPAs, sharing an identical main chain structure but different pendent groups, formed porous polyelectrolyte complexes owing to their rigid main chain. Therefore, this research provides a novel strategy for preparing both functional and engineering furan-based bioPAs.

Abstract:New unsaturated derivatives of the furan series, diallyl esters of furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid and 5,5′-[oxybis(methylene)]di(2-furoic acid), which can be used as monomers and cross linking agents, were synthesized by the aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and 5,5′-oxybis(5-methylene-2-furaldehyde) obtained by catalytic dehydration of fructose. Optimum conditions for the synthesis of the above-mentioned compounds and their copolymerization with butyl methacrylate were determined. Varying the amount of the cross-linking agent, the thermal stability, adhesion, strength and optical properties of copolymers can be controlled. New cross-linking agents obtained from renewable resources can be considered as an alternative to the important cross-linking agent, diallyl phthalate, produced from petroleum.

Abstract:Utilizing bio-based resources is an essential part of the sustainable development of plastics. Meanwhile, the end-of-life options of this bio-based plastic must be considered to avoid contributing to the accumulation of plastic waste. To address the problem of end-of-life plastics and the trade-off between chemical closed-loop recycling and high-performance, targeted selection of monomers and a method for the preparation of high-performance linear polyesters that can be rapidly closed-loop recycling without the addition of additional organic solvents under mild conditions are necessary. Herein, we report strategies for synchronously constructing chemical closed-loop and achieving high performance, by linear furan-based poly(butylene furandicarboxylate-diethylene glycol) (PBDyF), synthesized by dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate, diethylene glycol (DEG) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). Adjusting the ratio of ethyleneoxyethylene and butylene groups can endow PBDyF with excellent tensile strength (77.8 MPa), puncture resistances properties (129.7 N/mm), and barrier properties (CO2 0.0120 barrer, O2 0.0103 barrer) for PBD80F. Processing can be performed by injection moulding, and additive manufacturing, such as 3D printing. Moreover, we construct a rapid chemical-solvolysis strategy in mild conditions without producing other organic waste by the DEG/BDO to obtain recycled 2,5-furandicarboxylate, DEG, and BDO from PBDyF. Utilizing the differences in solubility and boiling point, the recycled chemicals can be separated. Repolymerized polyester (rPBDyF) still maintains high performance compared with PBDyF. In our approach, the high-performance chemical-recyclable copolyester, exhibiting greatly potential films or 3D printing applications, provides a state-of-art way for solving the trade-off problem between chemical-recycling and high performance of previous linear polyesters, further supports sustainable closed-loop chemistry.

Abstract:The replacement of polymers derived from petrochemical resources has been a prominent area of focus in recent decades. Polymers used in engineering materials must exhibit mechanical strength and stiffness while maintaining performance through a broad temperature range. Most of the polyesters used as engineering materials are based on terephthalic acid (TPA) and its derivatives, which provide necessary rigidity to molecular chains due to an aromatic ring. Bio-based alternatives for TPA-based polyesters that are gaining popularity are the polyesters derived from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). To broaden applicational possibilities, one effective way to achieve specific properties in targeted applications is to adjust the composition and structure of polymers using advanced polymer chemistry techniques. The incorporation of rigid diols such as isosorbide, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO) should result in a greater stiffness of the molecular chains. This review extensively explores the effect of incorporating rigid diols on material properties through a review of research articles as well as patents. Moreover, this review mainly focuses on the polyesters and copolyesters synthesized via two-step melt polycondensation and its alterations due to the industrial importance of this method. Innovative synthesis strategies and the resulting material properties are presented.
