Abstract:Because of their environmentally friendly and simple preparation process, Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are receiving more and more attention. In this study, Acetamide/Zirconyl chloride octahydrate (C2H5NO/ZrOCl2•8H2O) was synthesized by stirring a mixture of C2H5NO and ZrOCl2•8H2O at 100℃. Hydrogen bonding and coordination effect between ligands were demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). The synthesized DESs showed the highest catalytic activity in oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Under the optimum conditions, the sulfur removal was 98.6%. Furthermore, kinetic studies revealed that the reaction system had extremely low activation energy (24.063 kJ/mol). This can be attributed to the simultaneous existence of hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical in ODS system. DESs can be recycled 5 times with a slightly lower in sulfur removal performance. Finally, the oxidation products were characterized and reaction mechanism was also investigated. This paper supply new class of green and highly active DESs for oxidative desulfurization.
Preparation of EMIES/nC9H10O2-based deep eutectic solvents and its oxidative desulfurization activity

Abstract:A series of acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) EMIES/nC9H10O2(n=0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4) were synthesized by simply heating the mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate (EMIES) and 3-phenylpropionic acid (C9H10O2). The structure of EMIES/nC9H10O2 was determined by FTIR, 1H NMR and TGA characterization. The extraction-oxidation desulfurization system was developed to remove sulfides from model oil using EMIES/nC9H10O2 as the extractant and catalyst, H2O2 as the oxidation. The influences of raw material ratio, reaction temperature, O/S ratio, amount of DESs and different sulfide on the desulfurization performance were investigated. The experimental results demonstrated the optimal reaction conditions were molar ratio of EMIES to C9H10O2 of 1∶1, temperature of 50℃, O/S ratio of 8, the amount of DESs of 1.5 g and 5 ml model oil. Removal rate of DBT, 4, 6-DMDBT and BT reached 94.8%, 91.6% and 46.4%, respectively, under the optimal condition. The DESs can be reused for 6 times without significant decrease in activity. In addition, the desulfurization mechanism of the oxidation-extraction desulfurization system was discussed.
Highly efficient catalytic oxidation desulfurization from model oil based on acid deep eutectic solvents tetraethylammonium chloride/trifluoroacetic acid

Abstract:A series of new deep eutectic solvents (DESs) TEAC/nTFA (n=0.5,1,1.5,2) were synthesized by the reaction of tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAC) with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) at 70℃via simple stirring. The structure of the deep eutectic solvents was analyzed by FT-IR and1H NMR. The removal of sulfide in model oil was studied by using TEAC/TFA as catalyst and extraction agent, and H2O2as oxidant. The influence of n(TEAC)/n(TFA), temperature, O/S and the type of sulfur-containing compound on the desulfurization efficiency were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the removal rates of dibenzothiophene (DBT), benzothiophene (BT) and thiophene (TH) were 95.4%, 56.2% and 23.4%, respectively. The apparent activation energy was 56.8 kJ·mol?1 for the removal of DBT, which was estimated by first order reaction kinetics equation and Arrhenius equation. Oxidation reaction was easier to carry out because of the lower apparent activation energy. TEAC/TFA was reused for 5 times without significant decrease in activity.
Phenylpropanoic Acid-Based DESs As Efficient Extractants and Catalysts for the Removal of Sulfur Compounds from Oil

Abstract:A series of Bronsted-Lewis acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) of C9H10O2 center dot XZnCl2 (X from 0.5 to 3) were synthesized by simple mixing. The DESs were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The desulfurization of a model oil was investigated using C9H10O2 center dot XZnCl2 as the extraction agent and catalyst, and H2O2 as the oxidant. The effects of the molar ratio of phenylpropanoic acid to zinc chloride, reaction temperature, oxygen to sulfur (O/S) molar ratio, and volume ratio of DESs to oil on the desulfurization rate were investigated. The optimal conditions for desulfurization were determined to be a phenylpropanoic acid to zinc chloride ratio of 2: 1, a reaction temperature of 50 degrees C, an O/S ratio of 6, a DESs to oil volume ratio of 0.25: 1, and a model oil dosage of 5 mL. Under the optimal conditions, a desulfurization rate of 99.23% in 80 min was achieved. The recyclability of the DESs was also investigated, and the results showed that the desulfurization rate decreased slightly after five runs. These results demonstrate that C9H10O2 center dot 0.5ZnCl(2) DESs exhibit high desulfurization activity and stability in extraction and oxidation desulfurization systems. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this work, novel Lewis acidic ionic liquids [ODBU]Cl/nZnCl(2) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) with alkylated 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) cation and ZnCl2-based complex anion have been developed and utilized in extraction combined with oxidative desulfurization (ECODS) of both model oil and diesel fuel with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 30 wt%) as an oxidant. It was observed that the ECODS performance could be effectively optimized by the change of ZnCl2 proportion. Some important reaction parameters such as reaction temperature, molar ratio of O/S, mass ratio of IL/oil and sulfide species were systematically investigated. Furthermore, the ILs could be reused for at least six cycles without noticeable changes in desulfurization performance as well as its chemical structure, thus revealing its good reusability. Finally, [ODBU] Cl/3ZnCl(2) was employed in the ECODS of a hydrogenated diesel, the S-content could be reduced from 559.7 ppm to 4.8 ppm with 99.2% sulfur removal via a one-step process under mild conditions.
Designing Inorganic–Organic Dual-Acid Deep Eutectic Solvents for Synergistically Enhanced Extractive and Oxidative Desulfurization

Abstract:Acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been considered desirable extractants and catalysts for desulfurization. However, their hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) are usually sole organic acids, which are not conducive to efficient green catalysis. Herein, a novel inorganic–organic dual-acid DES (DADES) was reported for efficient extractive and oxidative desulfurization. Benefiting from the physical interaction among the three components in a DADES, a transparent homogeneous liquid can be obtained even though inorganic acid (boric acid, BA) and organic acid (acetic acid, AA) can be immiscible. Furthermore, the dual-acid HBD can increase the acidity of the DADES and reduce its viscosity, accelerating its mass transfer efficiency and enhancing its catalytic activity. With 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) as the hydrogen bond acceptor, [Bmim]Cl/BA/0.3AA effectively activated hydrogen peroxide and achieved sulfur removal of 96.6% at 40 °C. Furthermore, the universality of the synergistic effect in various DADESs was confirmed by the modulation of the types of organic acids. This study not only motivates the construction of more intriguing novel DESs based on the DADES concept but also highlights their potential in clean fuel production.

Abstract:Methylimidazole hydrochloride/oxalic acid ([HMIM]Cl/H2C2O4) type deep eutectic solvent was synthesized by a simple heating and stirring mixture of methyl imidazole hydrochloride and oxalic acid. The removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT) in model oil was carried out by using [HMIM]Cl/H2C2O4 as a catalyst and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. The effect of different reaction parameters such as different desulfurization system, reaction temperature, catalyst amount, molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to sulfur and the type of sulfur-containing compounds in oil on the desulfurization rate was investigated. The experimental results indicated that the removal rate of DBT can reach 92.2% under the optimum conditions of 5 ml model oil, 1.25 ml of [HMIM]Cl/H2C2O4 and O/S mole ratio of 12 in 140 min and 40℃. The kinetics analysis showed that the oxidative desulfurization system was in accord with the first order reaction kinetics equation. The catalyst was reused for 7 times without significant decrease in activity.
Study on Oxidative Desulfurization of Simulated Oil With The Acetic Acid-based Ionic Liquid Phase Transfer Catalyst

Abstract:The acetic acid-based ionic liquid was synthesized from acetic acid and methylimidazole by synthetic principle of ionic liquid.The ionic liquid has functions of both phase-transfer catalysts and extractant.In this paper,reaction mechanism of ionic liquid in oxidative desulfurization of simulated oil was introduced.The results show that when the reaction temperature is 80 ℃,reaction time is 30 min,the volume of model oil,ionic liquid and hydrogen peroxide is 10 mL respectively,the best desulfurization effect can be gained,the removal rate of thiophene in simu-lated oil may reach 73%.

Abstract:A series of [EMIM]DEP/nC(3)H(4)O(4) (n = 1, 2, 3) deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized by heating and stirring the mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate ([EMIM]DEP) and propanedioic acid (C3H4O4). [EMIM]DEP/2C(3)H(4)O(4) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Dibenzothiophene (DBT) in model oil was removed using the DESs as an extractant and catalyst, and H2O2 as an oxidant. The influence parameters of different systems, temperature, n(H2O2)/n(S), dosage of [EMIM]DEP/2C(3)H(4)O(4), and the sulfide type on desulfurization were investigated. The experimental results show that removal rate of DBT can attach to 98.2%. FT-IR analysis of DBT, DESs, and the mixture (DBT-DESs) show that there is an interaction between DBT and DESs.

Abstract:Supramolecular deep eutectic solvent (SUPRADES) was a promising green solvent with physicochemical properties that was similar to those of conventional deep eutectic solvent (DES). The supramolecular deep eutectic solvent-based nanofluidic system (β-CD-CA/CQDs) was constructed by using β-cyclodextrin as the hydrogen bond acceptor and citric acid as the hydrogen bond donor with the addition of carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The addition of CQDs enhanced the desulfurization ability and hydrogen bonding stability of SUPRADES. By controlling the content of CQDs solution, the viscosity of β-CD-CA/CQDs can be easily changed without altering its eutectic nature. The effects of temperature, O/S, sulfur content, oil content and different sulfides on the sulfur removal of β-CD-CA/CQDs were investigated. The sulfur removal of β-CD-CA/CQDs was up to 99.32% at 50 °C. The cyclic voltammetric tests, recovery experiments, and characterization all showed that β-CD-CA/CQDs had excellent recoverability and stability in desulfurization.

Abstract:CH3CONH2 /ZnCl2 type deep eutectic solvent was prepared by heating the mixture of acetic acid amide and zinc chloride at 110 ℃ .The structure was analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry ,infrared analysis and viscosity analysis .CH3CONH2 /ZnCl2 was used as extraction agent and catalyst ,and H2O2 was used as oxidant to remove thiophene sulfide in simulated oil .The effects of n(ZnCl2 )/n(CH3CONH2 ) ,n(H2O2 )/n(S) ,reaction temperature ,agent oil volume ratio and different sulfides on desulfurization rate were investigated .The results indicated that under the optimum conditions of 5 mL oil volume ,n(ZnCl2 )/n(CH3CONH2 )= 0 .4 ,n(H2O2 )/n(S)= 8 ,agent oil volume ratio 1 : 3 ,reaction temperature 70℃ and reaction time 200 min ,the removal rate of two thiophene was 87 .12% .After 5 cycles ,the desulfurization rate decreased slightly .

Abstract:In this paper, a set of novel ternary deep eutectic solvents (T-DESs) is synthesized and applied in the esterification of 2-methylpropenoic acid with alcohols. T-DESs have multiple functions, serving as a catalyst, polymerization inhibitor, and solvent, and demonstrate excellent catalytic esterification reaction activity (up to 96% yield). The optimal T-DESs 1 can be recycled 14 times without any decrease in its catalytic activity, thus solving the problems of methacrylate product separation with a polymerization inhibitor, catalyst recovery, and organic solvent pollution.

Abstract:Choline chloride / oxalic acid as a eutectic solvent was synthesized by the reaction of choline chloridewith oxalic acid at 100 ℃ via simple stirring. The removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT) in model oil was carried out by using choline chloride / oxalic acid as a catalyst, hydrogen peroxide as oxidant, imidazoliumtetrafluoroborate ionic liquid as extractant; the influence of reaction temperature and time, the amount of hydrogen peroxide, the type of extractant, the type of sulfur-containing compound ( thiophene and itshomologues ) on the desulfurization efficiency were investigated. The results indicated that under the optimal reaction conditions of n ( H2 O2 ) / n ( S ) = 8, reaction temperature of 30 ℃ and time of 80 min, thedesulfurization efficiency for DBT reaches without a significant decrease in the desulfurization activity. 95% . Moreover, the reaction system can be recycled for 5 times.
Deep Eutectic Solvents Consisting of EmimCl and Amides: Highly Efficient SO2 Absorption and Conversion

Abstract:There has been a surge in interest and research in the arena of utilizing deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as green solvents for removal of SO2 in recent years. In this work, an effective strategy for SO2 reversible capture and fixation by four amides based DESs was demonstrated. These DESs are composed of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoHum chloride (EmimCl) and dimethylurea (DMU), N-methylurea (MU), thioacetamide (SAA), or caprolactam (CLAA) in a 2:1 M ratio, which achieve both high gravimetric and molar absorption capacity of SO2 at 20 degrees C and 1.0 bar (up to 1.26 g per gram of DES, or 8.00 mol per mole of DES). Results of the NMR and FTIR spectra reveal that there are physical interactions between SO2 and DESs. Furthermore, absorbed SO2 can be desorbed and no significant drop in SO2 absorption was observed after five successive absorption-desorption cycles. Particularly, the absorbed SO2 was quickly converted in situ into the charge-transfer complex of bis(sulfur dioxide)-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane adduct (DABCO center dot 2SO(2)) as a high value-added chemical. The SO2-lean phase was directly reused for SO2 capture, thus greatly reducing energy requirements and providing a promising method SO2 resource utilization.
SYNTHESIS OF DEEP EUTECTIC SOLVENTS FOR THE REMOVAL OF SULFUR-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS FROM THE DIESEL FRACTION

Abstract:Two types of deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been synthesized for the extraction of sulfur-containing (SS) compounds from the diesel fraction (DF). In DES of the first type the acceptor is ZnCl2, while the donors are glycerol, polyethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, butylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, and n-butanol. In DES of the second type the acceptor is tetrabutylammonium bromide, while the donors are polyethylene glycol, glycerin, urea, imidazole, and phenol. Their extractive activity towards dibenzothiophene derivatives and cyclic sulfides was determined by using the diesel fraction (DF) as an example. The optimal conditions for the extraction process have been determined; hence the extraction time was 10-15 min. Extraction temperature in the range of 20 - 40 °C has little effect on the extraction ability of DES. Extraction was carried out at 30 °C. The results obtained showed that there is a certain dependence of the residual content of SC in DF in the case of the extraction with zinc chloride and polyols served as DES. A monotone decreasing in the degree of extraction is observed in the series butanol - polypropylene glycol - polyethylene glycol - butylene glycol - triethylene glycol - glycerin - ethylene glycol. In the case of extraction of SC with DES based on tetrabutylammonium, the degree of extraction decreases in the series - PEG - G - EG - imidazole. The maximum degree of extraction of SC is achieved with such DES as ZnCl2-butanol and tetrabutylammonium bromide-phenol. The extraction of homologues of dibenzothiophene and cyclic sulfides by the ZnCl2-butanol extraction system is located in the series: dimethyldibenzthiophene (100%) - methyldibenzthiophene (96.3%) - dibenzthiophene (74.7%) - cyclic sulfides (89%). The sequence of the extraction of SC in the tetrabutylammonium bromide–phenol system is the same: dimethyldibenzthiophene (98%) - methyldibenzthiophene (97%) - dibenzthiophene (98%) - cyclic sulfides (74%). Completely Inorganic Deep Eutectic Solvents for Efficient and Recyclable Liquid-Liquid Interface Catalysis

Abstract:Organic acid-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as catalysts always suffer from weak stability and low recyclability due to the accumulation of organic oxidative products in the DES phase. Herein, a completely inorganic deep eutectic solvent (IDES) ZnCl2/PA with zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and phosphoric acid (PA) as precursors is constructed to realize liquid-liquid interface catalysis for desulfurization of fuel and product self-separation for the first time. Owing to the inorganic nature, the organic oxidative products are accumulated at the interface between the IDES and fuel rather than the IDES phase. With this unique feature, the IDES can be reused for at least 15 times without any further treatment in oxidative desulfurization process, showing a state-of-the-art cycle-regeneration stability. Moreover, compared with the reported organic DESs, the IDES also reveals more attractive catalytic oxidative desulfurization performance. Experimental and theoretical studies indicate that the strong coordination Zn···O═P and the strong adsorption energy between IDES and sulfides enhance the activation of H2O2 to reactive oxygen species, leading to the superior catalytic performance in oxidative desulfurization of fuel.

Abstract:A series of acidic deep eutectic solvents [C4Pyr] Cl/nTsOH (n =0.1,0.2,0.3) were synthesized by the reaction of [C4Pyr] Cl with TsOH via simple heating and stirring.Then [C4Pyr] Cl/nTsOH as extractant and catalyst,H2O2 as oxidation were used in extraction-catalytic oxidation desulfurization system.The DESs [C4Pyr] Cl/0.2TsOH and products were characterized by FTIR.Different desulfurization systems,n([C4Pyr] Cl) ∶ n(TsOH),reaction temperature,n(H2O2) ∶ n(DBT),[C4Pyr] Cl/0.2TsOH dosage and different type of sulfide on desulfurization efficiency were investigated.According to the experiment results,the optimal reaction conditions were V(DESs) 1.00 mL,50 ℃,n(H2O2) ∶ n(DBT) 6,V(oil) 5 mL.Under these conditions,the removal for DBT,4,6-DMDBT and BT reached 98.2％,96.0％ and 40.2％,respectively.The apparent activation energy for the oxidation desulfurization was about 51.95 kJ/mol which was estimated based on first-order kinetics equation and Arrhenius equation.The DESs could be recycled 5 times,the desulfurization rate is still more than 95.1％.

Oxidative Desulfurization of FCC Diesel Oil Using Amphiphilic Catalyst Combined with Solvent Extraction

Abstract:Deep desulfurization of diesel oil has become an increasingly important subject worldwide due to the upcoming legislative regulations to reduce sulfur content in most countries. Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) combined with extraction was regarded to be the more promising of new desulfurizataion processes for fuel oil because of the great advantage of a short reaction time, mild reaction conditions and high selectivity. An amphiphilic catalytic-oxidation system, composed of diesel oil, hydrogen peroxide, and an amphiphilic catalyst [(C16H33) N+(CH3)3]3 [PW12O40]-, combined with extraction has been found suitable for the removal of sulfur in FCC diesel oil. The results demonstrated the amphiphilic catalytic-oxidation system improved the reaction and mass transfer performance and exhibited higher catalytic activity. The optimum oxidation conditions, which were H2O2/sulfur molar ratio (H2O2/S) of 5, reaction temperature of 80˚C and reaction time of 25min, were obtained. The extraction efficiencies of various solvents were investigated in detail and γ-butyrolactone was found to be the ideal solvent. Meanwhile, the optimum extraction process conditions including solvent to oil ratio, extraction temperature were developed.Under the optimum oxidation conditions , combining extraction by γ-butyrolactone, the sulfur removal efficiency and the yield of the oil were 88.1% and 85.0% , respectively.
