Abstract:Hybrid TiO2-H2O nanofluids were prepared by dispersing TiO2 nanospheres (TiNSs) and nanotubes (TiNTs) in deionized water.Influence of TiNSs/TiNTs concentration ratio and total TiO2 concentration on stability and thermal conductivities were investigated.Stability of hybrid nanofluids was evaluated by relative absorbance change, and thermal conductivities were measured by Nanoflash.The results indicated that relative absorbance change of hybrid nanofluids first decreased and then increased with increase in TiNTs concentration, which revealed that stability of hybrid nanofluids first improved and then deteriorated.Relative absorbance change of hybrid nanofluids decreased with increase in total TiO2 concentration, which revealed stability improvement of hybrid nanofluids.Hybrid nanofluids showed smaller decrease in thermal conductivities compared to individual TiNSs nanofluids after a period of time.Stability of hybrid nanofluids was analyzed by depletion interaction and viscosity enhancement.

Abstract:The application of nanofluid spectral splitting technology in photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) systems has attracted more attention. In this study, zinc oxide and silica nanoparticles were selected to prepare ZnO-SiO2-H2O mixed nanofluids with different concentrations to investigate the radiative characteristics and their effect on PV/T system. An experimental system was established to measure nanofluids transmission properties in 0.36-2.5 mu m, and the radiation characteristics were further analyzed using Mie scattering theoretical model. Besides, thermodynamic model was established to investigate the influence of mixed nanofluids on PV/T system performance. Results indicate that Mie theory can predict the radiative properties of mixed nanofluids well. The ZnO-SiO2-H2O nanofluids have better filtering performance than that of ZnO-H2O nanofluids under same particle concentration. When the mass ratio of ZnO/SiO2 is 0.01 %/0.05 %, the filtering efficiency of the nanofluid achieves 46.18 %. Increasing the concentration of SiO2 can regulate the transmittance of the ZnO-SiO2-H2O nanofluids and improve the PV/T system efficiency by 5 %. Based on ZnO nanofluids, the addition of SiO2 further optimizes PV/T system performance, increasing the system merit function (MF) value The nanofluid spectral splitting PV/T system for Si cells with a ZnO/SiO2 mass ratio of 0.003 %/0.056 % can reach a MF value of 1.342.

Abstract:Numerical research on convective heat transfer and resistance characteristics of TiO2/water nanofluids with cylindrical particles in laminar channel flow are performed by solving the governing equations of fluid flow with the additional term of cylindrical nanoparticles, the equation of probability density functions for cylindrical nanoparticle orientation, and general dynamics equation for nanoparticle volume concentration. The nonuniformity of nanoparticle distribution is considered and the effects of both particle volume concentration and Reynolds number on friction factor and local Nusselt number are mainly analyzed. The results show that the friction factor of nanofluid flow increases with an increase in particle volume concentration. And the friction factor decreases with increasing Reynolds number and is not dependent on the volume concentration at high Reynolds numbers. The Nusselt number declines when the Reynolds number decreases, and finally approaches an asymptotic value after the Reynolds number falls to a certain value. The Nusselt number is higher in the entrance region than at the downstream locations, and will become steady at somewhere downstream when the flow is thermally and hydraulically developed.

Abstract:Nanofluids are widely used in the field of energy and environment. However, the optical properties of such multiphase suspension are quite complex. Even for the well-studied TiO2 suspension, theoretical investigation of its optical parameters is quite rare, which remarkably restricts the extension of their application especially in the field of solar energy and optofluidics. Therefore, in this paper, the optical properties of TiO2 suspension were studied by coupling the classical particle agglomeration model and the discrete dipole approximation algorithm. The absorption and scattering coefficients of TiO2 aqueous suspension have been calculated and verified by experimental results. The effects of cluster compactness, size and other factors on the phase function were analyzed. Our work can also provide a reference for the study of optical properties of other nanofluids.

Abstract:This paper taken SiO2 nanofluid spectral splitting PV/T system on as the object of the research, considering the effects of scattering, the Mie scattering theory combined with Monte Carlo Ray Tracing (Tracepro software) method was developed to study optical properties and solar energy conversion efficiency with SiO2 nanofluid volume fraction and particle diameter. It is found that with the diameter of the nanoparticle is 5 nm, the spectral transmittance does not change with the increasing volume fraction, and the scattering effect of the nanofluid can be neglected, while the diameter of the nanoparticle is larger than 15 nm, the spectral transmittance change greatly, and the scattering needs to be considered; with the volume fraction and the diameter of SiO2 nanofluids becoming larger, the total energy absorbed by the photothermal conversion of nanofluid increase slightly, so the scattering of SiO2 nanofluid have minor effect on photothermal conversion of PV/T system, while the photoelectric conversion efficiency reduce because of the increasing scattering coefficient, which made total solar energy conversion efficiency reduced.

Abstract:The radiative properties of dense nanofluids are investigated. For nanofluids, scattering and absorbing of electromagnetic waves by nanoparticles, as well as light absorption by the matrix/fluid in which the nanoparticles are suspended, should be considered. We compare five models for predicting apparent radiative properties of nanoparticulate media and evaluate their applicability. Using spectral absorption and scattering coefficients predicted by different models, we compute the apparent transmittance of a nanofluid layer, including multiple reflecting interfaces bounding the layer, and compare the model predictions with experimental results from the literature. Finally, we propose a new method to calculate the spectral radiative properties of dense nanofluids that shows quantitatively good agreement with the experimental results. Abstract:Sol-hydrothermal method was used to synthesize the nanosized TiO2 nanoparticles with various grain sizes using raw materials of ethanol and Ti(OBu)(4). Fluorescence emission and diffuse reflection spectra for above TiO2 nanoparticles were measured. As the size of TiO2 nanoparticles decreased, blue-shift effect was observed in diffuse reflection spectra while this phenomenon was not observed in the fluorescence emission spectra. The band gap of optical absorption could be calculated for above TiO2 nanoparticles.

Abstract:The thermal radiative properties of nanofluids have considerable contribution to the effectiveness of harvesting solar energy. In this work, the thermal radiative properties of Al2O3-paraffin nanofluid were experimentally investigated in terms of the influence of volume concentration, nanoparticle size, temperature and optical path. The transmittance spectrums of Al2O3-paraffin nanofluid were measured by a TU-19 FTIR spectrometer which was used for the calculation for the absorption coefficient and reflectivity of nanofluid. The experimental results show that Al2O3-paraffin nanofluid performs excellent ability to absorb solar energy compared to pure paraffin, with higher absorption coefficients increased up to 15.5 times at volume concentration 0.01%. The reflectivity of nanofluid is sensitive to nanoparticle size. When the nanoparticle size decreases from 30 to 10 nm the reflectivity of Al2O3-paraffin nanofluid reduces about 37.04%. With increasing temperature, the absorption coefficient of Al2O3-paraffin nanofluid increases and the reflectivity accordingly decreases.

Abstract:•We systematically investigate the thermal radiation properties of nanofluids with nanoparticle aggregation from experiment and theory.•On the experimental side, TiO2@Ag nanoparticles are synthesized and the plasmonic nanofluids are prepared. The TEM images show that the size of clusters in nanofluid prepared in distilled water only is much larger than that in nanofluid with adding SDS surfactant. The measured thermal radiation properties demonstrate that the cluster size has a significant effect on the absorption of nanofluids.•On the theoretical side, a theoretical model for calculating the thermal radiation properties of nanofluids with nanoparticle aggregation is developed. The spectral transmissivity of nanofluids with nanoparticle aggregation is calculated and the effect of nanoparticle aggregation, fractal dimensions and cluster sizes are investigated.•By comparing the experimental results with modeling results, it demonstrates that our theoretical model can predict the thermal radiation properties of nanofluids with nanoparticle aggregation more reasonably. This is of great significance to understand the mechanism that affects the absorption of nanofluids with nanoparticle aggregation.

Abstract:In the design and optimization of nanofluids, it is crucial to investigate and characterize the thermal conductivity enhancement mechanisms and their influencing factors. Although the effect of the "liquid film" on the thermal conductivity of the solid–liquid interface in nanofluids has been extensively studied, most of the research in this area has examined metal–water nanofluids or Ar-based nanofluids. In this work, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics is utilized to explore the mechanism of thermal conductivity enhancement in TiO 2 –water nanofluids. It is noted that a distinct interfacial layer is formed within 5 Å from the nanoparticle surface. As the nanoparticle size increases, the number density also increases, resulting in a corresponding increase in the thermal conductivity. Moreover, adding 1% TiO 2 nanoparticles to water leads to an increase in thermal conductivity of 1.5–3%. Notably, the interfacial layer thickness remains relatively constant with the change in temperature. The Materials Studio analysis results indicated that the water molecule will have stable chemisorption on the titanium dioxide surface with an adsorption energy of approximately −0.96 eV. The findings of this study offer new insights and useful information to support the selection of nanomaterials for the preparation of convective systems.

Optical Properties of Nanofluids Considering Particle Size Distribution: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations

Abstract:Solar-thermal conversion is an effective means to collect solar energy. Nanofluids as thermal absorption media or optical filters have shown great potential for application in direct absorption solar collector or hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) collectors. Many researches have demonstrated that nanofluids, by adding certain nanoparticles, can dramatically enhance the radiation absorption property of base liquid. The optical properties of nanofluids could also be significantly affected by the size and distribution of nanoparticles. What's more, due to the high surface energy of nanoparticles, they have a great tendency to collide and aggregate into larger clusters. Obviously there is a close relationship between the aggregations of nanoparticles in nanofluids and their on optical properties. However, a systematic summary and review of those reports is lacked. In this review, firstly, the models describing aggregation processes of nanoparticles, i.e., population balance equations, Monte Carlo simulation and Brownian dynamic simulation, have been systematically introduced. Then, the basic optical models and optical models considering aggregation are summarized. Two possible problems and their solutions in the experimental investigation of optical properties of nanofluids are also discussed. Based on the discussions, the challenges that are expected to limit the predicting accuracy of optical properties of nanofluid are summarized which are supposed to be worth much in-depth study in the future.
Thermal Analysis of Radiative Darcy-Forchheimer Nanofluid Flow Across an Inclined Stretching Surface

Abstract:Nanofluids have unique features that make them potentially valuable in a variety of medicinal, technical, and industrial sectors. The widespread applications of nanotechnology in modern science have prompted researchers to study nanofluid models from different perspectives. The objective of the current research is to study the flow of non-Newtonian nanofluid over an inclined stretching surface immersed in porous media by employing the Darcy-Forchheimer model. Both titanium oxide (TiO2) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) are nanoparticles which can be found in blood (based fluid). The consequences of viscous dissipation, thermal radiations, and heat generation are also incorporated. Boundary layer approximations are employed to model the governing system of partial differential equations (PDEs). The governing PDEs with their associated boundary conditions are further altered to a dimensionless form by employing appropriate transformations. The results of the transformed model are collected using local non-similarity approach up to the second level of truncation in association with the built-in finite difference code in MATLAB (bvp4c). Additionally, the impacts of emerging factors on the fluid flow and thermal transport features of the considered flow problem are displayed and analyzed in graphical forms after achieving good agreement between accomplished computational results and published ones. Numerical variations in drag coefficient and Nusselt number are elaborated through the tables. It has been perceived that the enhancement in Casson fluid parameter diminishes the velocity profile. Moreover, it is noted that the porosity parameter and Lorentz's forces reinforce the resulting frictional factor at the inclined stretching surface.

Abstract:The optical properties of suspensions of P25 TiO2 photocatalyst are calculated with particulate-aggregates-based light scattering model. The effects of structure, number of monomer, and particle radius of cluster on the absorption and scattering coefficients are analyzed. It is found that the radius of particle in clusters significantly affects their scattering capacity, and this effect could be attributed to the dielectric resonance of single particle and the cooperative scattering caused by coupling of electric dipoles of adjacent particles. Abstract:Nanosize-TiO2 podwers with visible-light response and photocatalytic capability were synthesized by hydrothermal process with organics as solvents. Results of diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) for solid TiO2 powders show that the visible light response properties of present nanosize-TiO2 are similar to that of modified TiO2, which have strong visible-light response in visible-light region. On the other hand, UV-Vis absorption spectra of TiO2 suspensions show that the optical properties of present nanosize-TiO2 are similar to that of intrinsic TiO2, and no obvious visible light absorption detected. Such difference in optical properties via DRS and UV-Vis spectra for present nanosize-TiO2 is attributed to the difference status of nanosize-TiO2 existing as solid powder or dilute suspensions. Under the conditions of extreme dilute suspensions, photon induced electron transition accompanied by phonon excitation may be degenerated while it is not the case for solid powders. For present photocatalyst with high activity under visible light irradiation, it is necessary to combine two methods to evaluate the accurate information of the absorption edge and optical response properties.

Abstract:First, in this paper, nanofluids are prepared by a two‐step method, and the factors affecting their stability, thermal conductivity, viscosity, and density are analyzed to provide theoretical references for enhancing the heat transfer of nanofluids. Second, this paper determines the thermal conductivity, viscosity, and density of the nanofluids and discusses the factors affecting their physical properties. In this study, three nanofluids, CuO, SiC, and TiO2, are prepared by a two‐step method, and the factors affecting the stability, thermal conductivity, viscosity and density of the three are analyzed, so as to provide theoretical reference for strengthening heat transfer of the nanofluids. First, the effects of different dispersant addition amounts, magnetic stirring time, and ultrasonic oscillation time on the stability of nanofluids are analyzed in this paper, and finally chose the best solution for preparing three nanofluids. Second, the paper determines the thermal conductivity, viscosity, and density of three kinds of nanofluids and explores the factors affecting their physical properties. The thermal conductivity of the three nanofluids at the highest temperature is 2.9, 3.2, and 1.4 times that of the lowest temperature, respectively. When the temperature increased from 25 to 65 °C, the viscosity of CuO nanofluids decreases the most at different volume concentrations, and the viscosity decreases by 41.3% at 0.6% volume concentration. The density of nanofluids decreases with the increase of temperature and increases with the increase of volume concentration. At 25 °C, the density of SiC nanofluid increases the most with the volume concentration, and its density increases by 0.72%.

Abstract:An experimental system was built to investigate convective heat transfer and flow features of the nanofluid in a tube. Both the convective heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of the sample nanofluids for the turbulent flow are measured, respectively. The effects of such factors as the volume fraction of suspended nanoparticles and the Reynolds number on the heat transfer and flow features are discussed in detail. A new type of convective heat transfer correlation is proposed to correlate experimental data of heat transfer for nanofluids.

Unusual Photorheological Properties of TiO2 Nanoparticle Suspensions under UV Light Irradiation

Abstract:Precise control of the rheological properties of nanofluids in a non-contact way is of particular interest for its application in various nanotechnologies such as in microfluidic chips. In this study, for the first time, it was found that the viscosity of TiO2 nanoparticle suspensions can be precisely controlled by UV light irradiation of certain time. After 20 min irradiation of UV light, the viscosity increment of the suspensions compared to the base fluid was observed to reduce by 63.2%. This photorheological effect is irreversible unless ultra-sonication treatment was applied. More interestingly, the viscosity of the suspensions first decreases and then reversely increases with the irradiation time, namely, there is a critical value for the irradiation time. However, the UV irradiation has negligible influence on the thermal conductivity of the suspensions. It turns out that the UV irradiation can cause both increased particle size and hydrophilcity of TiO2 nanoparticles in the suspensions. Accordingly, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that the increased hydrophilcity of particle surface can result in the decrease in the viscosity of solid-liquid systems. It can be concluded that the observed unusual photorheological properties should be attributed to the combined effect of particle aggregation process and hydrophilcity increase. Our study should be of great value for nanoparticle suspensions in practical applications related to fluid flow and heat transfer.

Abstract:Titanate nanotubes of an aspect ratio of similar to 10 are synthesized, characterised and dispersed in water to form stable nanofluids containing 0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 wt.% of the nanotubes. Experiments are then carried out to investigate the effective thermal conductivity, theological behaviour and forced convective heat transfer of the nanofluids. The results show a small thermal conductivity enhancement of similar to 3% at 25 degrees C and similar to 5% at 40 degrees C for the 2.5 wt.% nanofluid. The nanofluids are found to be non-Newtonian with obvious shear thinning behaviour with the shear viscosity decreasing with increasing shear rate at low shear rates. The shear viscosity approaches constant at a shear rate higher than similar to 100-1000 s(-1) depending nanoparticle concentration. The high shear viscosity is found to be much higher than that predicted by the conventional viscosity models for dilute suspensions. Despite the small thermal conduction enhancement, an excellent enhancement is observed on the convective heat transfer coefficient, which is much higher than that of the thermal conductivity enhancement. In comparison with nanofluids containing spherical titania nanoparticles under similar conditions, the enhancement of both thermal conductivity and convective heat transfer coefficient of the titanate nanotube nanofluids is considerably higher indicating the important role of particle shape in the heat transfer enhancement. The function of nano layer in enhancing the thermal conductivity of TiO2/water nanofluids

Abstract:Nanoparticles have the capability to effectively improve the thermal conductivity of base fluids, thus improving the heat transfer coefficient of heat transfer systems. In this study, a non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) method based on the Fourier law is employed to study the thermal conductivity of TiO2 (r-TiO2)/water nanofluids with temperatures ranging between303K and 333K and volume fractions in the range of1-2%. The ordered layer structure as a shell is analyzed and its influence is surveyed by calculating the number density and radial distribution function (RDF).The results revealed that a clear, solid-like nanolayer of about 0.5 nm can be observed around the nanoparticle. In this regard, the thickness of the nanolayer is less affected by variations in volume fraction and temperature. The g(r) values and the number density decreased with the increase in temperature. Additionally, the g(r) values and the number density at the level of the nanolayer were much higher compared to those at other parts. This indicates the existence of more water molecules in the nanolayer, thereby reducing contact thermal resistance and improving thermal conductivity. Macroscopically, the thermal conductivity increases with the increase in volume fraction. It was found that the increase in the volume fraction from 1%to 2%at303Kresulted in an increase in the effective thermal conductivity from1.027 and 1.042, respectively. In other words, the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid was 2.7% and 4.2% higher than that of the base liquid under the same conditions.

Abstract:Photothermal catalytic hydrogen production driven by the full spectrum of outdoor solar radiation, represents a highly promising and efficient approach for hydrogen generation. This method is widely anticipated by researchers due to its potential to enhance photon utilization efficiency at the reaction source. However, limited attention has been devoted to the variations in photothermal conversion performance of particle reaction suspensions caused by objective fluctuations of solar irradiation, especially when the morphology of the nanostructure changes, which is a crucial factor for practical applications in hydrogen production. Based on this bottleneck, we prepared the typical photo-responsive TiO 2 @Go composite with varied dimensions ( i.e. , nanosphere TiO 2 @Go, nanorod TiO 2 @Go, nanosheet TiO 2 @Go) as research models, and systematically investigated their thermal conversion and sensible heat conversion performance under different working conditions. The results showed that at low nanofluid concentration, nanosphere TiO 2 @Go and nanosheet TiO 2 @Go exhibit better sensible heat conversion. As the particle concentration increases, the sensible heat conversion efficiency of all nanofluids decreases. It can also be found that the latent heat conversion efficiency tends to increase with the increase of concentration, but the nanorod TiO 2 @Go show the opposite, which should be closely related to the uniformity of the particle size in different directions. In addition, for the sensible heat storage properties of nanofluids, smaller particle size and abundant porosity due to particles aggregation were found to be more beneficial for varied shapes. The underlying functional mechanisms were elucidated associated with the analysis of particle structures, interfacial properties, and optical characteristics. We contend that our research could provide valuable insights for the large-scale implementation of solar photothermal hydrogen production and a reasonable selection of photothermal material morphology for outdoor working conditions.
