Abstract:Magnetic structures and magnetization processes of individual Ni nanowires with constrictions are investigated by means of micromagnetic modeling. The physical problem is modeled with the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert (LLG) equation, and the fast Fourier transform on multipoles (FFTM) method is employed to speed up the calculation of the demagnetization field. It is demonstrated that the FFTM algorithm is efficient and accurate for studying magnetization transition configuration in nanowire. The new approach is then used to study the switching phenomenon of the nanowire. And the simulation results show that the switching field increases a little with presence of constriction. The investigation of the magnetization processes illustrates the edge domain forms near constriction region for nanowire with diameter=30nm and vortex domain for 200nm case.

Abstract:Structural, magnetic and mechanical properties of Co-based magnetic microwires and their composites had been investigated. It was found that annealing amorphous microwires at 600°C caused a drastic variation in the amorphous structure due to crystallization and consequently degraded the soft magnetic properties of the microwires. The tensile tests on the single microwires of different size with and without glass-coated layer revealed a coherent correlation between the mechanical properties and the wire geometry. When compared with single magnetic microwires, the magnetic and magneto-impedance properties of composites were much improved. The strong field dependence of the effective permittivity and transmission/reflection parameters in the Gigahertz range of the composites containing short wires or arrays of continuous wires indicated that these new composites are promising candidate materials for a variety of self-sensing applications.

Abstract:Systematic study on magnetic properties of Fe-nanowires fabricated by electrochemical deposition is performed by micromagnetic simulation,which reveals that all nanowires show magnetic anisotropy,and the coercivity dependents on the diameter with a relationship of inverse square ratio.With fixed diameter,it increases as the length increases,stopping at a platform.The hysteresiss loop,static magnetic configuration and reversal mechanism all vary with changing diameter and length of the wires.Explicit explanation is presented based on the details of the magnetization process.Nanowires with diameter of 5nm,which have not been successfully acquired by experiments all show uniform reverse mechanism in the simulation.Even more intriguing magnetic behaviors emerge when the shape of the wires becomes more particle-like.
High-frequency Ferromagnetic Resonance of Co Nanowire Arrays

Abstract:Highly ordered arrays of Co nanowires with different diameters have been fabricated by electrodeposition in nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide membranes. The prepared Co nanowires have hexagonal close-packed structure and are [002] preferred oriented crystalline with the c-axis parallel to the long axis of the nanowires. The high anisotropy of Co nanowires offers the possibility to control their magnetic properties and microwave properties, which are experimentally characterized by a vibrating sample magnetometer and frequency-swept ferromagnetic resonant flip-chip based techniques, respectively. The nanowire arrays exhibit strong magnetic anisotropies. As for the ferromagnetic resonance frequency, it increases with increasing value of the applied field, and zero-field ferromagnetic resonance frequencies up to 28-34 GHz. Also, the magnetic anisotropies and high ferromagnetic resonance frequency of Co nanowire arrays, are shown to be determined by the combined effect of shape anisotropy, crystalline anisotropy, and dipolar interactions between the nanowires. Abstract:The effects of the number of microwires N in an array and of their lengths on the remagnetization process and the magnetostatic properties for glass-coated Fe-rich and Co-rich amorphous alloy microwires have been investigated. The remagnetization profiles were measured by vibrating sample magnetometry. The coercive field and the saturation field for arrays of both Fe-rich and Co-rich microwires increased while the remanence to saturation ratio decreased as N increased from 1 to 150. The coercive field and remanence to saturation ratio decreased when the length of the microwires was reduced from 10 to 1mm.The effect of the collective length of an array of microwires on their magnetostatic properties is analyzed using a model considering the balance between the demagnetizing energy, the magnetoelastic energy and the dipolar–dipolar interaction energy. Also, the critical lengths of the glass-coated Fe-rich and Co-rich microwires are estimated from the abrupt change in the magnetostatic properties.

Abstract:The inner core microwave permeability of glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires was derived based on the precession equation of infinitely long magnetic single domain cylinder.The alloy shell microwave permeability of Fe-based microwires was analyzed.Furthermore,the influencing factors of natural ferromagnetic resonance frequency of alloy microwires were analyzed.The typical microwave relative complex permeability of the inner core and shell,and the variation of nature ferromagnetic resonance on the change of the geometrical size of glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires were simulated based on the theoretically concluded result.The influence regulation of the geometrical size on the natural ferromagnetic resonance frequency of the alloy microwires was discussed.The study result showed that the natural ferromagnetic resonance frequency of alloy inner core of the long microwires depends on the saturated magnetization,and the natural ferromagnetic resonance frequency of Fe-based microwires depends on the equivalent anisotropy field.The nature resonance frequency of the glass-coaed alloy microwires can be controlled by changing the geometrical size.

Abstract:Glass-coated amorphous FeCuNbSiB microwires were prepared by Taylor-Ulitovsky technique. X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the glass-coated microwires respectively. The vibrating sample magnetometer and vector network analyzer were used to study the magnetostatic and microwave properties of glass-coated microwires. The experimental results show that the effective anisotropy of an array of 150 microwires of 10 mm in length is large than that of one microwire of 10 mm in diameter and an array of 150 microwires of 1 mm in diameter. The natural ferromagnetic resonance takes place as the microwave magnetic component is perpendicular to the microwires axis, and the electric dipole resonance takes place as the microwire is long or the short microwire concentration is moderate. The natural ferromagnetic resonance shifts to higher frequency with the larger microwire concentration. The electric dipole resonance is governed by the microwires length and concentration. The glass-coated FeCuNbSiB microwires can be used to design EMI filters and microwave absorbing materials.

Abstract:The advancement in micro and nano-scale technologies demands in depth understanding of magnetic behaviors. For example, as the ever increasing need for high capacity data storage continuously pushes the boundaries of magnetic recording technology to the physical limits, detailed analysis of the magnetic properties becomes necessary. It is expected that finite element micromagnetics can predict the magnetic behavior with high accuracy taking complex microstructure of magnetic materials into account. In practice, however, the tradeoff is speed and accuracy. This paper reviews the numerical methods used in micromagnetic simulations and presents practical examples in the field of nanotechnology and magnetic recording.

Abstract:The dielectric properties of glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires are different with those of the non-magnetic conductive wires.This study analyzed the theory permittivity formula of parallel distributed and random distributed glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires / dielectric composite respectively.According to the theory analysis result of dielectric properties,the permittivity of typical glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires / rubber composite was simulated.The change of the permittivity of glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires / dielectric composite in different frequency range and with magnetic domain distribution was discussed.The results show that the dielectric properties of glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires in high-frequency and microwave arrange are affected by the magnetic properties by impedance.The high-frequency and microwave dielectric properties of glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires can be controlled by the magnetic properties.
Experimental and Micromagnetics Studies on Magnetism of Ni Nanowire Arrays Prepared with Magnetic Field Induction

Abstract:A new way to make high performance Ni nanowire arrays with external magnetic field inducing DC electrodeposition. The magnetic properties of the arrays are also studied by micromagnetic simulations. The electrodeposition of Ni nanowires is carried out in a two electrode electrodeposition pool. The deposition current is kept constant at 2 A/dm/sup 2/ with deposition time of 5 min and a 3000 Oe magnetic field along the wires is exerted parallel to the counter electrode direction. TEM photograph shows the nanowires are 600 nm long and polycrystalline. M-H loops for the Ni nanowires prepared with a magnetic field applied determine the squareness of 0.88 and coercivity of 690 Oe. Results of micromagnetic simulations show that the shape anisotropy field is dominant for the magnetic properties of a pure Ni elongated magnetic grain. Also, the simulated hysteresis loops agree quite well with the measured loops.

Abstract:Approaches to modulate magnetoimpedance (MI) in amorphous wires mostly include annealing, ion irradiation, glass coating and patterning, which are mainly based on induction of transverse magnetic anisotropy. Here, through modulating the magnetization distribution across the wire and outer magnetic shell/ inner core ratio, enhanced magneto- and stress-impedance sensitivity were obtained. Such modulation was achieved by coating a Co-based melt-extracted wire with carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene oxide (GO) which induced different level of stresses allowing the increase in outer domain shell volume with helicoidal/circular-type magnetic anisotropy in expense of the axially magnetized inner core. Moreover, through controlling nanocarbon thickness, we demonstrated the validity of high frequency impedance measurements to map the magnetic microstructure across the wire and reveal the core-shell interaction and its contribution to MI. The improvement in transversal anisotropy was evidenced by a drastic increase in MI effect from 170% at 10 MHz for uncoated wire to 400% and 300% for CNT and GO-coated wires, respectively. Finally, by developing a planar model with a four-layer structure, the main features of MI curves were reproduced in the simulated curves. Our results establish a simple platform for the design of microwave materials towards a wide range of sensing applications.
Broadband microwave ferromagnetic resonance measurement of Co nanowire array

Abstract:Co nanowire array was embedded into anodic aluminum oxide template by DC electrodeposition method. The result of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the prepared Co nanowire array exhibit a hexagonal close packed (hcp) structure with preferred orientation of (100) plane. A broadband ferromagnetic resonance system operating in the frequency range from 0 GHz to 50 GHz, was taken to measure the microwave ferromagnetic resonance of the Co nanowire array with a coplanar waveguide using the flip-chip technique. The results show that the Co nanowire array has a gyromagnetic ratio of 2.03×10–3GHz/Oe, a zero-filed ferromagnetic resonance frequency up to 10.8 GHz and a large effective magnetic anisotropy field of 5.3 kOe.

Abstract:Magnetic cylindrical nanowires are very fascinating objects where the curved geometry allows many novel magnetic effects and a variety of non-trivial magnetic structures. Micromagnetic modelling plays an important role in revealing the magnetization distribution in magnetic nanowires, often not accessible by imaging methods with sufficient details. Here we review the magnetic properties of the shape anisotropy-dominated nanowires and the nanowires with competing shape and magnetocrystalline anisotropies, as revealed by micromagnetic modelling. We discuss the variety of magnetic walls and magnetic domains reported by micromagnetic simulations in cylindrical nanowires. The most known domain walls types are the transverse and vortex (Bloch point) domain walls and the transition between them is materials and nanowire diameter dependent. Importantly, the field or current-driven domain walls in cylindrical nanowires can achieve very high velocities. In recent simulations of nanowires with larger diameter the skyrmion tubes are also reported. In nanowires with large saturation magnetization the core of these tubes may form a helicoidal ('corkscrew') structure. The topology of the skyrmion tubes play an important role in the pinning mechanism, discussed here on the example of FeCo modulated nanowires. Other discussed examples include the influence of antinotches ('bamboo' nanowires) on the remanent magnetization configurations for hcp Co and FeCo nanowires and Co-Ni multisegmented nanowires.

Abstract:The resonance frequency of ferromagnetic particles with surface anisotropy was investigated by micromagnetic simulation. Two kinds of calculations were done: those with Aharoni surface anisotropy and those with Néel-Brown surface anisotropy. In Aharoni surface anisotropy, the relationship between the resonance frequency and particle size D was in agreement with Shilov's theory. In Néel-Brown surface anisotropy, the resonance frequency was proportional to 1/b, where b was the length of the short axis.

Abstract:20 nm diameter Fe-Co nanowire arrays with different composition were fabricated by electrodeposition. A nanoporous anodized aluminium oxide film was used as the substrate. The microstructure and magnetic properties were studied by x-ray fluorescence, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometry. Both the coercivity H, and the spontaneous magnetization M-s increase when the Co content in Fe-Co alloy increases from 0 to about 30 at.%, and then decrease with further increase in the Co content. A model called the 'chain of crystals' is developed and solved to explain the experimental results.

Abstract:Research progress of properties of glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires was reviewed.The characteristics and attractive investigation aspects of the glass-coated magnetic alloy microwires were summarized firstly.Then the magnetic domain configuration of different saturated magnetostriction coefficients,effects of dimension,length,annealing and concentration on the magnetic and high frequency electromagnetic properties of glass-coated magnetic microwires were summed up.In the meantime the application prospects of glass-coated magnetic microwires on the magnetic sensors,microwave materials and electromagnetic absorbing materials were described.

Abstract:In this study, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) was used to analyze the crystal structure of nickel nanowires with a diameter of 40 nm. The micromagnetic structure of the nickel nanowire was analyzed using Lorentz microscopy and off-axis electron holography. This method is confirmed to be an effective means to obtain intuitive information of low dimensional magnetic nanomaterials. To investigate the influence factors in the magnetization reversal process, dynamic magnetization simulations were performed on an individual nanowire and a two nanowires system, respectively. By comparing the experimental data with simulation results, we find that the magnetostatic interactions between adjacent nanowires have significant influence on the magnetization behavior of nanowire arrays.

Abstract:Arrays of Ni nanowires with different wire diameters were prepared by electrodepositing the corresponding material into cylindrical pores of anodic alumina templates. A transition of the easy magnetization direction has been observed from the wire axis to the transverse direction when the wire diameter increases. It is analytically obtained that this phenomenon is mainly originated from the competition of shape anisotropy and the magnetostatic coupling among the Ni wires. Based on dipolar interaction model, numerical calculation is performed to study the interaction among the nanowires, and the result is in agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:Using magnetic force lines as invisible template, cobalt microwire arrays, which are formed by cobalt nanoparticles and array along the direction of magnetic force lines, have been successfully obtained. It was confirmed that strong interaction between the synthetic magnetic material and the magnet template has a key effect on the formation of the arrays while weak interaction leads to the formation of individual microwires. This result provides us a new idea that the magnetic force lines could be an ideal template for magnetic material arrays and by controlling the arraying manner of magnet templates, different magnetic patterns could be obtained.
Effects of Wire Properties on the Field-Tunable Behaviour of Continuous-Microwire Composites

Abstract:The microwire composites consisting of continuous Co-rich amorphous glass-coated ferromagnetic microwires embedded in a E-glass prepreg matrix were fabricated, and the influences of wire periodicity (b), composition and radius on the field-tunable properties have been systematically investigated in a broad microwave frequency range of 0.9–18GHz. It has been found that the field tunability, effective operational frequency and field of the composites are strongly dependent on these factors. With decreasing b from 15 to 7mm, the field tunability of effective permittivity (nɛ) increases from 0.77% to 16%m/A by more than 20 times. The detected cups and resonances of the transmission and reflection spectra are identified. Their changes with wire periodicity have been shown to be due to a combination of the dielectric and magnetic response arising from the interactions between microwave and microwires and microwires by themselves. The best possible field tunability occurs below the plasma frequency. The effective magnetic field for realisation of the field-tunable properties has been found to be about 500A/m, which is associated with the anisotropy field. In addition, field tunability is found to be positively correlated with the magnetic softness and GMI properties of the wire fillers, which are determined by the wire composition and geometry. These findings are of practical importance in developing multifunctional microwire composites for a broad range of engineering applications, such as structural health monitoring, NDT and microwave tunable devices.
