Abstract:Picometer-scale lattice distortions play an important role on the macroscopic properties of relaxor ferroelectric materials. Due to competition between composition/charge ordering in these materials, there is a formation of “polar nanoregions” where local fluctuations in the B-site give rise to inhomogeneities in local strain and polarization on the nanometer scale. Direct real-space visualization of these distortions and local chemical composition can provide important insight into the formation of these “polar nanoregions”.

Abstract:Long‐range ordering of dipoles is a key microscopic signature of ferroelectrics. These ordered dipoles form ferroelectric domains, which can be reoriented by electric fields. Relaxor ferroelectrics are a type of ferroelectric where the long‐range ordering of dipoles is disrupted by cation disorder, exhibiting complex polar states with a significant amount of local structural heterogeneity at the nanoscale. They are the materials of choice for numerous devices such as capacitors, nonlinear optical devices, and piezoelectric transducers, owing to their extraordinary dielectric, electro‐optic, and electromechanical properties. However, despite their extensive applications in these devices, the origins of their unique properties are yet to be fully understood, hindering the design and exploration of new relaxor ferroelectric‐based materials. Herein, the complex polar states and applications of relaxor ferroelectrics are first introduced. Attention is then focused on their electromechanical properties, where the relationship between local structural heterogeneity and the extraordinary electromechanical properties is discussed. Based on the understanding of relaxor ferroelectrics, potential strategies to exploit the local structural heterogeneity to design ferroelectrics for drastically enhancing their electromechanical performances are also discussed. It is expected that this article will stimulate future studies on the important roles of local structural heterogeneity in improving the properties of various functional materials.
Atomic-resolution electron microscopy of nanoscale local structure in lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics

Abstract:Relaxor ferroelectrics, which can exhibit exceptional electromechanical coupling, are some of the most important functional materials, with applications ranging from ultrasound imaging to actuators. Since their discovery, their complex nanoscale chemical and structural heterogeneity has made the origins of their electromechanical properties extremely difficult to understand. Here, we employ aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy to quantify various types of nanoscale heterogeneities and their connection to local polarization in the prototypical relaxor ferroelectric system Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3. We identify three main contributions that each depend on Ti content: chemical order, oxygen octahedral tilt and oxygen octahedral distortion. These heterogeneities are found to be spatially correlated with low-angle polar domain walls, indicating their role in disrupting long-range polarization and leading to nanoscale domain formation and the relaxor response. We further locate nanoscale regions of monoclinic-like distortion that correlate directly with Ti content and electromechanical performance. Through this approach, the connections between chemical heterogeneity, structural heterogeneity and local polarization are revealed, validating models that are needed to develop the next generation of relaxor ferroelectrics.

Since their discovery nearly 60 years ago, the complexity of nanoscale chemical and structural heterogeneity in these systems has made understanding the origins of their unique electromechanical properties a seemingly intractable problem. A full accounting of the mechanisms that connect local structure and chemistry with nanoscale fluctuations in polarization has, however, remained a need and a challenge. Abstract:Over the past decades, lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics have served as the model systems to unravel the relationship between electromechanical properties and local structure. Here, by employing pair distribution function analysis and the reverse Monte Carlo method, we investigate the local structural features and their temperature dependence in relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 with x = 0.15 (PZN-15PT), which has a tetragonal average structure, but displays frequency dependence at low temperatures. The refined atomic model suggests that ordered polar nanoregions (PNRs) originate from the strong atomic displacive correlation, and their polar directions are the same as the crystallographic symmetry axis. The dipoles in the disordered matrix have weak correlations and can be averaged into a global tetragonal symmetry. These findings establish a detailed picture of the local structure of lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics and provide a deeper insight into the nature of PNRs.

Abstract:The existence of polar nanoregions (PNRs) is widely accepted as a key signature of relaxor-ferroelectric solid solutions which display ultrahigh piezoelectricity. However, the exact structural model of PNRs is still under extensive debate. In this work, neutron atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis was performed to study the local-structural features of relaxor-ferroelectric (1 - x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-xPbTiO(3) with x = 0.28 (PMN-28PT) at low temperatures. The PDF profile reveals a much stronger correlation of atomic displacements in the very-short-r range structure compared with the medium- and long-r range matrixes. The structural modeling results suggest that the key factor differentiating the structures in the short- and medium-r ranges is the displacement correlation rather than the structural symmetry. Therefore, we conclude that the characteristics of the PNRs in PMN-28PT, including their formation and sizes, are governed by the displacive correlation. The temperature-dependent correlation change reflects the macroscopic dielectric properties. This finding provides a better understanding of the unique high-performance piezoelectric properties of relaxor-PbTiO3 materials.

Abstract:The existence of polar nanoregions is the most important characteristic of ferroelectric relaxors, however, the size determination and dynamic of PNRs remains uncertain. We reveal a re-entrant relaxor behavior and ferroelectric-paraelectric transition coexists in complex perovskite oxide 0.6Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3-0.4PbTiO3. Two dielectric anomalies (i) the low-temperature re-entrant relaxor transition and (ii) the high-temperature diffuse phase transition (DPT) were described by the phenomenological statistical model. The sizes of the two kinds of polar nanoregions (PNRs) corresponding to two ferroelectric states were obtained. The dynamic of PNRs were analyzed using isothermal electrical modulus, which shows three critical temperatures associated with the diffuse phase transition, the formation and freezing of PNRs, respectively. The temperature evolution of the PNRs evolution depends on the stoichiometry of bismuth. The results provide new insights into the dynamic behavior of PNRs and the modification way of re-entrant relaxor behavior.

Abstract:The structure-property relationships on different length scales and their connections to the macroscopic piezoelectric and dielectric properties are one of the most fascinating topics of relaxor ferroelectrics and need to be further explored. Here, we provide structural insights into the gap between the short-range structure and the long-range structure of the classical relaxor ferroelectric lead magnesium niobate (PMN) using a combination of theoretical simulations and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. Our study shows that PMN exhibits a disordered low-symmetry structure at the smallest length scale (1-10 Å) and a cubic crystallographic average structure at large length scale. A rhombohedral phase is observed at the intermediate length scale (∼ 20–70 Å), resulting from chemical ordered regions with the ordered local electric field and associated quasi-correlated Pb displacements. Our work advances the understanding of the structures of relaxor ferroelectrics at different length scales and the relationships among them.

Abstract:Relaxor-ferroelectrics are renowned for very large electrostrictive response, enabling applications in transducers, actuators, and energy harvesters. However, insight into the dissimilar contributions (polarization rotation, wall motion) to the electromechanical response from electrostrictive strain, and separation of such contributions from linear piezoelectric response are largely ignored at the mesoscale. Here, we employ a band-excitation piezoresponse force microscopy (BE-PFM) technique to explore the first and second harmonics of the piezoelectric response in prototypical relaxor-ferroelectric 0.72Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.28PbTiO3 (PMN-0.28PT) single crystals. Third order polynomial fitting of the second harmonic reveals considerable correlation between the cubic coefficient map and the first harmonic piezoresponse amplitude. These results are interpreted under a modified Rayleigh framework, as evidence for domain wall contributions to enhanced electromechanical response. These studies highlight the contribution of domain wall motion in the electromechanical response of relaxor ferroelectrics, and further show the utility of harmonic BE-PFM measurements in spatially mapping the mesoscopic variability inherent in disordered systems.

Abstract:Relaxor ferroelectric perovskites have experienced a revival of interest in recent years accompanying the deeply exploration of the fine local structure of polar nanoregions, which are thought to be the structure root for unique electrical properties. Interestingly, a new type of low-tolerance relaxor ferroelectric, which exhibits both cation displacement and large oxygen octahedral tilt, exhibiting anomalous microdomains were found in NaNbO3-based lead-free perovskites, breaking through the limits of the relaxor ferroelectric models proposed from classical relaxors. Atomic-scale annular bright-field scanning transmission electron microscopy images indicate that the microdomains are formed by long-range ordered oxygen octahedral tilt. At the same time, substructure of randomly embedded nanoregions with inhomogeneous polarization vectors can be mapped, being the main reason for relaxor behavior. Based on this special ferroelectric-improper ferroelastic state, delayed polarization saturation can be obtained under strong electric field, providing an opportunity for generating excellent energy storage properties. The results found in this work not only open up a new kind of relaxor ferroelectrics but also will lead to the reconstruction of relaxor models and theories built for more than half a century.

Abstract:In this work, we carry out molecular dynamics simulations based on an extended version of the bond valence force field to investigate the underlying physics of relaxor dielectrics with static temperature-stable dielectric response. We focus on the perovskite solid solution (1−x)Ba0.95Ca0.05TiO3−(x)Bi0.5MeO3(Me=Mg1/2Ti1/2,Sc,Zn1/2Ti1/2) , which has a flat dielectric response over a wide temperature range which was recently observed experimentally. Our molecular dynamics simulations can not only reproduce the temperature-dielectric relationship observed in experiments, but also provide an atomic scale explanation. Specifically, doping Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 into the (BaCa)TiO3 crystal reduces the spatial correlation length of electric dipole orientations to the minimum distance, which is only within the neighboring unit cells. This nearest-neighbor correlation even persists at high temperatures. As a result, in this perovskite solid solution, the correlation length and macroscopic polarization change little with the temperature, leading to temperature-stable relaxor dielectric responses. The relationships between our theory and previously proposed models, such as the independent local mode and correlated rattling cations model, are also discussed. Abstract:Introducing structural and/or chemical heterogeneity into otherwise ordered crystals can dramatically alter material properties. Lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics are a prototypical example, with decades of investigation having connected chemical and structural heterogeneity to their unique properties. While theory has pointed to the formation of an ensemble of ``slush''-like polar domains, the lack of direct, spatially resolved volumetric data comparable to simulations presents a significant challenge in measuring the spatial distribution and correlation of local chemistry and structure with the physics underlying relaxor behavior. Here, we address this challenge through three-dimensional volumetric characterization of the prototypical relaxor ferroelectric \ce{0.68Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O3-0.32PbTiO$_3$} using multislice electron ptychography. Direct comparison with molecular dynamics simulations reveals the intimate relationship between the polar structure and unit-cell level charge imbalance induced by chemical disorder. Further, polar nanodomains are maintained through local correlations arising from residual short-range chemical order. Acting in concert with the chemical heterogeneities, it is also shown that compressive strain enhances out-of-plane correlations and ferroelectric-like order without affecting the in-plane relaxor-like structure. Broadly, these findings provide a pathway to enable detailed atomic scale understanding for hierarchical control of polar domains in relaxor ferroelectric materials and devices, and also present significant opportunities to tackle other heterogeneous systems using complementary theoretical and experimental studies.

Slow and Non-Equilibrium Dynamics due to Electronic Ferroelectricity in a Strongly-Correlated Molecular Conductor

Abstract:Using a combination of resistance fluctuation (noise) and dielectric spectroscopy we investigate the nature of relaxor-type electronic ferroelectricity in the organic conductor $\kappa$-(BETS)$_2$Mn[N(CN)$_2$]$_3$, a system representative for a wider class of materials, where strong correlations of electrons on a lattice of dimerized molecules results in an insulating ground state. The two complementary spectroscopies reveal a distinct low-frequency dynamics. By dielectric spectroscopy we detect an intrinsic relaxation that is typical for relaxor ferroelectrics below the metal-to-insulator transition at $T_{\rm{MI}}\sim 25\,$K. Resistance noise spectroscopy reveals fluctuating two-level processes above $T_{\rm MI}$ which strongly couple to the applied electric field, a signature of fluctuating polar nanoregions (PNR), i.e. clusters of quantum electric dipoles fluctuating collectively. The PNR preform above the metal insulator transition. Upon cooling through $T_{\rm MI}$, a drastic increase of the low-frequency $1/f$-type fluctuations and slowing down of the charge carrier dynamics is accompanied by the onset of strong non-equilibrium dynamics indicating a glassy transition of interacting dipolar clusters, the scaling properties of which are consistent with a droplet model. The freezing of nano-scale polar clusters and non-equilibrium dynamics is suggested to be a common feature of organic relaxor-type electronic ferroelectrics and needs to be considered in theoretical models describing these materials.

Origin of Reentrant Relaxor Formation in Ferroelectric Solid Solutions

Abstract:Nanoscale compositional heterogeneity created by doping in ferroelectric systems leads to the formation of conventional relaxors in most cases, but reentrant relaxors in some unusual cases. It has remained a long-standing puzzle why reentrant relaxors rather than conventional relaxors form in these unusual cases. In this study, we use a binary ferroelectric system having a solid solution of a ferroelectric with cubic (C) to tetragonal (T) transition at one end and a ferroelectric with C to rhombohedral (R) transition at the other end, with nanoscale compositional heterogeneities, to reveal the origin of the reentrant relaxor transition. Our phase field simulations based on Landau theory demonstrate that the reentrant relaxor transitions in such a system are manifested by the formation of R nanodomains in the T microdomains upon cooling at compositions near the T/R phase boundary, which is accompanied by frequency-dependent permittivity peaks below TC. We found that the difference in phase transition sequence at different local compositions near the T/R phase boundary created by point defect doping is essential for the formation of reentrant relaxors. This work unravels the general conditions for the formation of reentrant relaxors and may shed light on the origin of other reentrant ferroic glasses.
Heterogeneous field response of hierarchical polar laminates in relaxor ferroelectrics

Abstract:Relaxor ferroelectrics are a class of materials that are widely perceived as deriving their exotic properties from structural heterogeneities. Understanding the microscopic origin of the superior electromechanical response requires knowledge not only concerning the formation of polar nanodomains (PNDs) built from individual atoms but more importantly the spatial distribution of PNDs over longer distances. The mesoscale PND arrangement is shaped by the interactions between these domains and, in turn, dictates the electric-field driven PND response directly relevant to the macroscopic material properties. Here, we show the emergence of mesoscale lattice order that we name "polar laminates" in the canonical relaxor ferroelectric 0.68PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$-0.32PbTiO$_{3}$ (PMN-0.32PT) using X-ray coherent nano-diffraction. These laminates are nematic with a size of ~350 nm and arise from the staggered arrangement of ~13 nm monoclinic PNDs along the <110> of the pseudocubic lattice. The spatial distribution of c-axis strain is directly correlated with the tilting of the PNDs and is most prominent between the laminates. Further operando nano-diffraction studies demonstrate heterogeneous electric-field-driven responses. The most active regions tend to reside inside the laminates while the spatial pinning centers are between the laminates. This observation reveals the hierarchical assembly of lattice order as a novel form of electron and lattice self-organization in heterogenous materials and establishes the role of such mesoscale spatial arrangement in connecting the nanoscale heterogeneity and macroscopic material properties. These findings provide a guiding principle for the design and optimization of future relaxors and may shed light on the existence of similar behavior in a wide range of quantum and functional materials.

Abstract:Ultrahigh-precision manufacturing and detection have highlighted the importance of investigating electrostrictive materials with a weak stimulated extrinsic electric field and a simultaneous large hysteresis-free strain. In this study, a new type of electrostrictive relaxor ferroelectric is designed by constructing a complex inhomogeneous local structure to realize excellent electrostrictive properties. A remarkably large electrostrictive coefficient, M33 (8 × 10-16 m2 V-2 ) is achieved. Through a combined atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy and advanced in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis, it is observed that such superior electrostrictive properties can be ascribed to a special domain structure that consists of endotaxial nanoprecipitations embedded in a polar matrix at the phase boundary of the rhombohedral/tetragonal/cubic phases. The matrix contributes to the high strain response under the weak extrinsic electric field because of the highly flexible polarization and randomly dispersed endotaxial nanoprecipitations with a nonpolar central region, which provide a strong restoring force that reduces the strain hysteresis. The approach developed in this study is widely applicable to numerous relaxor ferroelectrics, as well as other dielectrics, for further enhancing their electrical properties, such as electrostriction and energy-storage capacity.
Spin-Pair Correlation Dependent Dynamic Properties In Magnetic Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Abstract:In magnetic relaxor ferroelectrics, for the coupling interaction between the relaxor ferroelectricity and magnetic order, the dielectric constant exhibits a sharp increase around the magnetic phase-transition temperature. Based on the consideration that a polarization process is associated with the thermally activated flips of the polar regions, the reorientable polar regions have the main contribution for the dielectric behavior. Considering the specialty of relaxor ferroelectrics, a distribution function for the relaxation times is introduced to simulate the dielectric behavior of the magnetic relaxor ferroelectrics. It is indicated that the dielectric anomaly below the magnetic phase-transition temperature is attributed to the fact that the activation energy against dipole reorientation is amended by the spin-pair correlation via the magnetoelectric coupling. The obtained real part of dielectric constants and the magnetocapacitance are in good agreement with the experimental results. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Details of local atomic structure and dynamics play a significant role in determining the ferroelectricproperties, even though ferroelectricity is a highly collective phenomenon. They are most importantin disordered ferroelectrics, the relaxor ferroelectrics in particular. In this chapter we discuss howneutron scattering measurements enable us to see directly the local structure and dynamics and facilitatethe understanding of their role through the static and dynamic atomic pair-density function (PDF) analysis.The PDF provides direct information on the local atomic structure, even when the structure is disordered,and complements the conventional crystallographic approaches. Recent advances in the pulsed neutron sourcesand in spectrometers have made this technique particularly powerful for studies of disordered ferroelectricsolids. We focus on the role of Pb2+ ions in mixed ferroelectrics and the atomisticdynamic mechanism of relaxor ferroelectrics.

Abstract:An atomistic numerical scheme is developed and used to study the prototype of relaxor ferroelectrics, that is PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN), at finite temperatures. This scheme not only reproduces known complex macroscopic properties of PMN, but also provides a deep microscopic insight into this puzzling system. In particular, relaxor properties of PMN are found to originate from the competition between (1) random electric fields arising from the alloying of Mg and Nb ions belonging to different columns of the Periodic Table within the same sublattice; (2) the simultaneous condensation of several off-center k points as a result of a specific short-range, antiferroelectriclike interaction between lead-centered dipoles; and (3) ferroelectriclike interactions. Such origins contrast with those recently proposed for the homovalent Ba(Zr,Ti)O-3 solid solution, despite the fact that these two materials have similar macroscopic properties-which therefore leads to a comprehensive understanding of relaxor ferroelectrics.
