Abstract:Permanent-magnet vernier machine (PMVM) is a relatively new type of PM machines. An analytical subdomain model accounting for tooth-tips and flux modulation poles is developed to accurately predict on-load field distributions in PMVMs. Based on two-dimensional (2-D) polar coordinate and magnetic vector potential, this method solves the Maxwell's equations in slot, air-gap, flux modulation pole slot (FMPS), and PM regions. Consequently, the electromagnetic performance such as cogging torque, back-electromotive force (EMF), electromagnetic torque, power factor, and magnet loss are calculated. In addition, the model can also be used for the evaluation of demagnetization withstand capability. The finite-element analysis (FEA) and experimental results validate the accuracy of the developed analytical model.

Abstract:Based on the subdomain field model accounting for tooth-tips, the force distribution and unbalanced magnetic force of surface-mounted PM machines are analytically calculated respectively for open-circuit only, armature reaction only and on-load. The finite element results confirm that the developed model has excellent accuracy, while the complex permeance model shows a large error in the predicted unbalanced magnetic force and lowest spatial order harmonic of the force distribution, especially on light load.

Abstract:Purpose – Due to high electromagnetic torque at low speed, vernier machines are suitable for direct-drive applications such as electric vehicles and wind power generators. The purpose of this paper is to present an exact sub-domain model for analytically predicting the open-circuit magnetic field of permanent magnet vernier machine (PMVM) including tooth tips. The entire field domain is divided into five regions, viz. magnets, air gap, slot openings, slots, and flux-modulation pole slots (FMPs). The model accounts for the influence of interaction between PMs, FMPs and slots, and radial/parallel magnetization. Design/methodology/approach – Magnetic field distributions for slot and air-gap, flux linkage, back-EMF and cogging torque waveforms are obtained from the analytical method and validated by finite element analysis (FEA). Findings – It is found that the developed sub-domain model including tooth tips is very accurate and is applicable to PMVM having any combination of slots/FMPs/PMs. Originality/value – The main contributions include: accurate sub-domain model for PMVM is proposed for open-circuit including tooth-tip which cannot be accounted for in literature; the model accounts the interaction between flux modulation pole (FMP) and slot; developed sub-domain model is accurate and applicable to any slot/FMP/PM combinations; and it has investigated the influence of FMP/slot opening width/height on cogging torque.

Abstract:This paper develops an analytical model for predicting the magnetic field, back-electromotive force (EMF), and electromagnetic torque of surface-mounted permanent magnet machines accounting for magnet geometrical shaping and varied magnet property distribution. The magnets on the rotor are represented by the remanence, thickness, and magnetization direction functions. They are finitely segmented into magnet pieces of simple regular shape and uniform magnet property. The magnetic field of the machine is obtained by the superposition of the magnetic field due to each segment. The back-EMF and electromagnetic torque are also calculated. Using the developed model, the technique of mixed magnet material is investigated on a four-pole/six-slot machine. The analytical predictions are verified by both finite element and experimental results.

Abstract:This paper analytically predicts the slotting effect on the magnet losses due to open-circuit and armature reaction magnet fields in fractional-slot surface-mounted permanent magnet machines. An improved relative permeance model for predicting the open-circuit magnet loss is developed based on the 2-D magnetic field model, relative airgap permeance and Carter coefficient, while the conventional one uses a 1-D field model and neglects the Carter coefficient. Extensive comparison shows that the improved model has much higher accuracy. For the magnet loss due to armature reaction, the slot opening factor is used for evaluation of the slotting effect. The investigation shows that the slotting can reduce magnet loss due to armature reaction, but increases the open-circuit magnet loss. The finite element results confirm the analytical predictions.

Abstract:We present an analytical model of unbalanced magnetic force (UMF) in fractional-slot surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) machines having diametrically asymmetrical winding distribution but no static/dynamic rotor eccentricities. It is based on a 2-D analytical field model and accounts for the influence of both the radial and tangential force waves under any load condition. It is capable of providing insight into the generation, harmonic contents, and characteristics of the UMF and accurately predicting the magnitudes, rotation directions, phase angles of its harmonics and various components, such as the UMFs due to armature reaction only, mutual interaction between both PM and armature reaction fields, and radial and tangential force waves. The cancellation and additive effects between the UMF components resulting from the radial and tangential force waves are revealed for the first time by the analytical model. We show that such effects strongly depend on the UMF harmonic order, slot/pole number combinations, and the internal/external rotor machine topologies. We have validated the analytical model by finite-element analyses and partially by experimental results.

Abstract:Nowadays, frozen permeability (FP) has emerged as an advanced and popular method for analyzing permanent magnet (PM) machines, facilitating the separation of open-circuit and on-load components under high saturation conditions. However, due to the necessity of storing permeance at various positions of the core material, the majority of these methods are implemented based on the finite element method. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for analytically realizing the FP process, which is based on an improved two-dimensional Fourier model and a parameterized nonlinear lumped magnetic circuit model. The proposed method enables rapid separation of the on-load magnetic field, significantly reducing freezing time with minimal magnetoresistance number. Additionally, the separation of the on-load PM magnetic field, back EMF, and inductance of two saturated SPM machines using the proposed model validates the effectiveness and speed advantages of the algorithm. Furthermore, a correlation analysis of the salient characteristics exhibited by the surface-mounted PM topology after high saturation is conducted.

Abstract:In order to ease the manufacture process of very large permanent magnet (PM) machines, such as direct drive wind power generators, modularity technique is usually adopted. Although conventional fractional slot PM machines with all teeth wound windings show good performance, the coils located at the end part of each segment could be easily damaged because of being exposed to the air. In addition, the local winding faults could easily proliferate to the whole machine due to the physical touch of adjacent coils. Thus, a novel modular fractional slot PM machine with redundant teeth is proposed in this paper, while three phases within each set of winding are still balanced. The construction of the proposed modular PM machine having 42-slots/32-poles (42S/32P) combination is described in detail as an example, which can be treated as the integration of six 6S/5P segments and a redundant 6S/2P machine. The reason for using 6S/2P machine is to get rid of the undesirable unbalanced magnetic force (UMF), which usually exists in rotating asymmetric machines, such as 3S/2P PM machine. Since the end part of each segment in the proposed modular PM machine can be covered by half redundant tooth during the production, more protection can be provided for coils located in these regions. Furthermore, the separation of six segments can improve the fault-tolerant capability of the machine. The electromagnetic performance predicted by finite-element analysis (FEA) also demonstrates that the proposed modular machine will perform better if dual three-phase winding is adopted. Finally, the experiments on the prototyped machine validate the analysis in the paper.

Abstract:Doubly-fed flux reversal permanent magnet (DF-FRPM) machine with two independent armature windings accommodating in stator and rotor slots separately exhibits larger torque density than conventional FRPM due to higher utilization rate of rotor space. In this paper, the investigation is focused on the airgap field modulation and torque contribution of dominating harmonics in DF-FRPM machine. Besides the open-circuit airgap flux density, both stator and rotor armature reaction are qualitatively analyzed by magneto-motive force (MMF)-permeance model considering stator and rotor saliency since the two independently supplied armature windings both make contributions to the torque production. The pole pairs and rotating speed of field harmonics are addressed. Dominating field harmonics that contribute to electromagnetic torque are identified and validated by finite element (FE) analysis.

Abstract:This article proposes an improved analytical model of slotted linear permanent magnet synchronous machines (LPMSMs) to fast and accurately obtain the magnetic field distribution and detent force. Considering the secondary end effect can optimize the thrust performance in terms of machine control, while there are few research works focusing on this study. Combined with the periodic extension method, both the primary and secondary end effects are taken into consideration, which is the major contribution of this article. The analytical model containing seven subdomains (SDs) is conducted in Cartesian coordinates. The magnetic distributions in air-gap, slots, and end regions are obtained by solving Maxwell equations with various interface conditions. The thrust and normal forces are subsequently calculated based on the Maxwell stress tensor. The corresponding finite element (FE) model produces numerical results to validate the analytical results. A prototype is manufactured and tested. The experimental results show that the improved analytical model is accurate and efficient in no-load performance calculation. The investigation shows that this proposed method can be applied to all of the LPMSMs with similar structures.

Abstract:The paper presents an analytical model for predicting the open-circuit magnet eddy-current loss due to slotting in surface-mounted permanent-magnet machines based on the exact subdomain field model. The spatial and temporal characteristics of field harmonics due to slotting and corresponding eddy-current harmonics in the magnet are analyzed in both stator and rotor reference frames. The contribution of interaction between eddy-current harmonics having the same frequency but different spatial order to magnet loss is revealed for the first time by an analytical model. The magnet loss can be under-or overestimated if the interaction is neglected. The developed model is capable of providing both high accuracy and insights of loss generation. The influence of the slot and pole number combination, slot-opening to slot-pitch ratio, pole-arc to pole-pitch ratio, circumferential segmentation, and rotational symmetry order on the open-circuit magnet is investigated using the developed model. The finite-element results validate high accuracy of the developed analytical model.

Abstract:This paper presents an exact analytical subdomain model of slotted permanent-magnet (PM) machines, taking into account the diffusion effect. The model gives the magnetic fields, both the eddy currents and the power losses in the PM, the instantaneous and average torque. In the model, eddy currents are not assumed to be resistance limited, contrary to what is done in the conventional exact subdomain models of the slotted machines. The model is hence general and valid both at low and high frequencies. It shows that it is possible to calculate the power losses in the PMs, only knowing the fields in the air gap. The model takes into account the presence of tooth-tips. The comparison with conventional exact subdomain models shows that the model presented in this paper is more accurate. The model is validated using the finite-element methods.

Abstract:The paper presents an accurate analytical subdomain model for computation of the open-circuit magnetic field in surface-mounted permanent-magnet machines with any pole and slot combinations, including fractional slot machines, accounting for stator slotting effect. It is derived by solving the field governing equations in each simple and regular subdomain, i.e., magnet, air-gap and stator slots, and applying the boundary conditions to the interfaces between these subdomains. The model accurately accounts for the influence of interaction between slots, radial/parallel magnetization, internal/external rotor topologies, relative recoil permeability of magnets, and odd/even periodic boundary conditions. The back-electromotive force, electromagnetic torque, cogging torque, and unbalanced magnetic force are obtained based on the field model. The relationship between this accurate subdomain model and the conventional subdomain model, which is based on the simplified one slot per pole machine model, is also discussed. The investigation shows that the proposed accurate subdomain model has better accuracy than the subdomain model based on one slot/pole machine model. The finite element and experimental results validate the analytical prediction.

Abstract:This paper proposed a hybrid subdomain model (HSM) for calculating the magnetic field distribution of interior permanent-magnet (IPM) machine accounting for slotting effect, rotor saliency, and iron nonlinearity. In the constant permeability region, i.e., slots, slot-opening, and air-gap, three subdomains are introduced to represent their magnetic field. By applying the subdomains interface conditions and nonlinear boundary conditions, the analytical air-gap field solution can be obtained based on the governing Laplace and Poisson equation. For the iron region, the magnetic reluctance network (MRN) is proposed to account for rotor saliency iron and nonlinearity. The magnetic voltage source is introduced to represent the permanent-magnet (PM) while the air-gap flux source is used to replace the air-gap reluctance network, which is the key to guarantee the computational efficiency and high accuracy. The electromagnetic performances of both flat-shaped and V-shaped IPM machines are investigated to show the advantages of different IPM machine topologies analytically. The HSM predictions for both IPM machines are validated by finite-element (FE) analysis and experimental results.

Abstract:In this article, two doubly fed (DF) flux-reversal permanent magnet (FRPM) machines with different PM arrangements are proposed, both of which have an additional set of armature winding in their rotor slots to further enhance the torque performance. Together with their one-set armature winding counterparts, comprehensive analyses and comparison among these four machines are conducted. The operation principles and winding configurations of these four machines are firstly introduced. Then, based on finite-element (FE) method, the electromagnetic performances of four machines after optimization with the purpose of maximum torque are compared in terms of no-load, on-load, and over-load capabilities. The results show that the DF-FRPM machine with consequent-pole structure offers the highest average torque and lowest torque ripple, which make it a promising candidate for low-speed and high-torque applications. A prototype machine has been manufactured and the FE results have been verified.

Abstract:Analytical models show weakness in dealing with saturation in surface-mounted permanent-magnet machines. A hybrid field model (HFM) integrating complex permeance method (CPM) and lumped parameter magnetic circuit model (LPMCM) is proposed in this paper for predicting the on-load magnetic field considering nonlinearity effect of stator lamination. In the proposed model, the CPM calculates the field in the air gap and magnet regions, while LPMCM calculates the magnetic potential distribution inside the iron reflecting nonlinearity effect. The equivalent current sheet is obtained to replace such distribution on the stator bore. Moreover, local magnetic saturation of tooth tip is also transformed into equivalent current on the tooth surface. A solving procedure is proposed to calculate the equivalent current and guarantee the convergence. Compared with CPM, the proposed model considering the saturation effect significantly improves the prediction accuracy of the on-load performance. The HFM predictions are compared with finite element and experimental results. The excellent agreement validates its effectiveness.
A Novel Structure of Doubly Salient Permanent Magnet Machine

Abstract:Because permanent magnet (PM) penetrates into the slot, three phases of doubly salient PM machine (DSPMM) employing inner type flux focusing method have imbalanced slot areas in the conventional design. To enhance its torque performance, this paper proposes a novel structure, of which the side tooth next to the PM has two parts. Its tooth body is parallel to the middle tooth between two PMs, while the tooth-tips of all teeth are still kept uniformly distributed on the stator bore. The position of the tooth body of side tooth is optimized to have the balanced slot areas. The main parameters of the novel structure together with two conventional structures are globally optimized under the fixed copper loss and stator outer radius. Their performance comparison shows that by using the proposed structure, the average torque is increased by 25%-31%, while the ratio of torque to cross-section area is increased by 17%-25%.

Abstract:An effective analytical model of permanent magnet linear synchronous machine (PMLSM) is proposed in this paper, which considers the end effect by adding virtual slots and the slotting effect by adopting relative air-gap permeance. To employ this model, the open-circuit air-gap flux density of a slotless PMLSM with virtual slots is firstly predicted by Subdomain (SD) method, and then the complex relative air-gap permeance is introduced based on conformal mapping. By multiplying these two quantities, the open-circuit air-gap flux density of actual slotted PMLSM can be obtained. The phase flux linkage, back-EMF and detent force can be predicted accordingly. Moreover, the detent force is more easily depressed by optimizing the end teeth and slots via the proposed method. The predicted results are validated by 2-D nonlinear finite-element (FE) and prototype measurements.
