Abstract:A new method of preparing water-dispersible silicon quantum dots (QDs, blue spheres) has been developed by using an organic peroxide as a highly effective precursor (the lower left quarter, red and grey–green ball-and-stick model). The obtained water-dispersible carboxylic acid terminated Si QDs displayed strong and stable photoluminescence in the visible spectrum, which can be widely used in boimedical imaging. For more detail, see the Communication by S.-T. Lee, P.-F. Wang et al. on page 12872 ff. Lewis Bases In their Review on page 12852 ff., O. R. P. David et al. give an overview of progress made in the field of nitrogen-centred Lewis base catalysts from the point of view of physical organic chemists.1 Nanotubes In their Communication on page 12882 ff., J. R. Parquette et al. demonstrate the self-assembly of a new family of tube-forming lipid amphiphiles containing an n-type chromophore. Lysines functionalized with 1,4,5,8-naphthalene-tetracarboxylic acid diimide undergo aqueous self-assembly into 1D nanotubes. The nanotube assembly process is remarkably tolerant of headgroup variations.1 Gold Catalysis A simple and efficient AuI-catalyzed highly diastereoselective synthesis of tertiary amines has been achieved as described in the Full Paper by C.-M. Che et al. on page 12932 ff. This novel procedure occurs as a one-pot reaction from simple starting materials without the need of isolation of air/moisture-sensitive tertiary enamine intermediates, and under mild reaction conditions. A possible reaction mechanism involves intermolecular hydroamination via a monomeric cationic AuI–alkyne intermediate and subsequent transfer hydrogenation through a AuI-coordinated enamine intermediate.1
