Abstract:The Kerala Khondalite belt is a Proterozoic metasupracrustal granulite facies terrain in southern India comprising garnet-biotite gneiss, garnet-sillimanite gneiss and orthopyroxene granulites as major rock types. Calc-silicate rocks and marbles, occurring as minor lithologies in the Kerala Khondalite Belt, show different mineral assemblages and reaction histories of which indicate a metamorphic P-T-fluid history dominated by internal fluid buffering during the peak metamorphism, followed by external fluid influx during decompression. The carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of calcite from three representative metacarbonate localities show contrasting evolutionary trends. The Ambasamudram marbles exhibit carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (δ13C ∼ 0‰ and δ18O ∼ 20‰) typical of middle to late Proterozoic marine carbonate sediments with minor variation ascribed to the isotopic exchange due to the devolatilization reactions. The δ13C and δ18O values of ∼ −9‰ and 11‰, respectively, for calcite from calc-silicate rocks at Nuliyam are considerably low and heterogeneous. The wollastonite formation here, possibly corresponds to an earlier event of fluid infiltration during prograde to peak metamorphism, which resulted in decarbonation and isotope resetting. Further, petrologic evidence supports a model of late carbonic fluid infiltration that has partially affected the calc-silicate rocks, with subsequent isotope resetting, more towards the contact between calc-silicate rock and charnockite. At Korani, only oxygen isotopes have been significantly lowered (δ18O ∼ 13‰) and the process involved might be a combination of metamorphic devolatilization accompanied by an aqueous fluid influx, supported by petrologic evidence. The stable isotope signatures obtained from the individual localities, thus indicate heterogeneous patterns of fluid evolution history within the same crustal segment.
Identification of Multiple Thermal Events in High‐Grade Metacarbonate Rocks Using Carbon Isotope Thermometry: An Example From the Sør Rondane Mountains, East Antarctica

Abstract:Carbon isotope thermometry in metacarbonate rocks from the Sør Rondane Mountains, East Antarctica revealed multiple thermal events. Nine metacarbonate layers from the regionally metamorphosed terrane of the Sør Rondane Mountains in the Eastern Dronning Maud Land in East Antarctica were examined in detail for constraining the thermal events using carbon isotope exchange between dolomite/calcite and graphite. Equilibrium carbon isotope fractionation between dolomite and graphite suggested peak metamorphic temperature conditions reaching up to 802°C ± 29°C were estimated at the Balchenfjella locality, where multiple samples from six thick layers of metacarbonate rocks were examined. However, some of the samples exhibit lower carbon isotope fractionation reflecting the possibility of ultrahigh‐temperature metamorphic conditions, which is consistent with recent reports. Furthermore, several metacarbonate rock samples display large variations in δ13CVPDB values for graphite grains, despite dolomite and calcite showing homogeneous carbon and oxygen isotopic composition indicating signatures of retrograde metamorphism and fluid infiltration events. Detailed textural observation suggested alteration of δ13CVPDB values of graphite during retrograde metamorphism might have resulted due to the overgrowth of graphite crystals by the infiltration of low δ13CVPDB‐bearing fluids, the extent of alteration being a direct function of the fluid–rock ratio. Field evidence indicates the presence of carbonate veins cutting across the metacarbonate rocks suggesting that carbon isotope thermometry can also be utilised to understand the effect of external fluid infiltration. At Perlebandet locality the metamorphic temperature conditions were estimated to be around 915°C, whereas those from Tanngarden and Menipa gave lower temperature estimates. Detailed textural analysis of graphite in combination with isotopic composition provided clear evidence for retrograde events. Thus, our results provide tight constraints of peak and post‐peak metamorphic temperature conditions and a regional thermal structure for the Sør Rondane Mountains and further testify the usefulness of carbon isotope thermometry in polymetamorphic terrains.

GRAPHITE CRYSTALLINITY, A RELIABLE GEOTHERMOMETER FOR HIGH-GRADE METAMORPHIC ROCKS – CASE STUDY FROM TRIVANDRUM BLOCK, SOUTHERN INDIA

Abstract:Mineral graphite an allotrope of carbon occurs in a variety of geological settings throughout the geological history and is of common occurrence in metamorphic rocks of medium to high-grade and associated pegmatites. Graphite occurring disseminated in metamorphosed siliceous or calcareous sediments such as gneisses, schist’s and marbles are probably of biogenic origin. Besides their economic significance these graphite occurrences in the metasedimentary rocks are of great petrogenetic importance. The variation in degree of graphitization serves as an indicator of metamorphic grade and can be studied under various spectroscopic methods. In this work, the graphitization temperature derived from the degree of graphitization values of graphite from the metasedimentary rocks of Trivandrum block is calculated and an attempt is made to correlate it with the metamorphic temperature obtained by conventional geothermometry. An attempt is thereby made to validate the idea of graphite thermometry from its structural characterization.

Abstract:Incipient charnockites have been widely used as evidence for the infiltration of CO2‐rich fluids driving dehydration of the lower crust. Rocks exposed at Kakkod quarry in the Trivandrum Block of southern India allow for a thorough investigation of the metamorphic evolution by preserving not only orthopyroxene‐bearing charnockite patches in a host garnet–biotite felsic gneiss, but also layers of garnet–sillimanite metapelite gneiss. Thermodynamic phase equilibria modelling of all three bulk compositions indicates consistent peak‐metamorphic conditions of 830–925 °C and 6–9 kbar with retrograde evolution involving suprasolidus decompression at high temperature. These models suggest that orthopyroxene was most likely stabilized close to the metamorphic peak as a result of small compositional heterogeneities in the host garnet–biotite gneiss. There is insufficient evidence to determine whether the heterogeneities were inherited from the protolith or introduced during syn‐metamorphic fluid flow. U–Pb geochronology of monazite and zircon from all three rock types constrains the peak of metamorphism and orthopyroxene growth to have occurred between the onset of high‐grade metamorphism at c. 590 Ma and the onset of melt crystallization at c. 540 Ma. The majority of metamorphic zircon growth occurred during protracted melt crystallization between c. 540 and 510 Ma. Melt crystallization was followed by the influx of aqueous, alkali‐rich fluids likely derived from melts crystallizing at depth. This late fluid flow led to retrogression of orthopyroxene, the observed outcrop pattern and to the textural and isotopic modification of monazite grains at c. 525–490 Ma.

Abstract:Metasedimentary rocks commonly contain carbonaceous materials which derived from the evolution of organic matter originally in the host sedimentary rock. During metamorphic processes, this organic matter is progressively transformed into graphite or the carbonaceous materials with various degrees of crystallization, which is known as a reliable indicator of metamorphic grade. Raman spectroscopy is an effective tool in describing the degree of crystallization of carbonaceous materials. A linear relationship between metamorphism temperature and the Raman spectra parameters (R1 = D1/G, where G and D1 are carbon material Raman spectroscopy peak intensities; R2 = D1/(G + D1 + D2) , where G, D1 and D2 are carbon material Raman spectroscopy peak aeras) was firstly established by Beyssac et al. (2002a) , namely T(degrees C) = -445 (R2)+641. It is simple and practical and applied to study the thermal structure and exhumation mechanism of the Alps as well as Himalayan orogenic belts. Subsequently, Rahl et al. (2005) further refined the thermometer which is T(degrees C) =737. 3 + 320. 9R1 - 1067R2 - 80. 638R1(2), and extended metamorphic temperature calculation range from 100 degrees C to 700 degrees C. This paper reviews the basic principles, methods and application conditions of carbon material Raman spectroscopy metamorphic thermometer, summarizes their application in study of reconstruction and evolution of orogenic belt thermal structure. A systematic comparative analysis of metamorphic temperature estimated by the carbonaceous Raman spectroscopy thermometer and the traditional thermometer show that the carbonaceous Raman thermometer represents the peak metamorphic temperature and will not be affected by the late retrograde metamorphism and the results of two thermometers are consistent when traditional thermometer represents peak metamorphic temperature. Carbon material Raman spectroscopy metamorphic thermometers have been used in reconstructing thermal structures of the orogenic belt, revealing the thermal evolution of the exhumation process, and studying on thermal anomalies related to high strain zones and fluids. Although the effects of pressure, duration time of metamorphism, carbonaceous material precursor types and other factors on carbon material Raman spectroscopy thermometers need further study in the future, combined with the conventional thermometer, the peak metamorphic temperature ranges calculated by the carbon material Raman spectroscopy metamorphic thermometers in the orogenic belts can reveal the multi-stage metamorphism evolution during orogenic process.
Coupled Laser Raman Spectroscopy and Carbon Stable Isotopes of Graphite from the Khondalite Belt of Kerala, Southern India

Abstract:Graphite in high grade meta-supracrustal rocks provide an important proxy to characterize biogenic and abiogenic carbon sources. Here we investigate graphite in various associations within the granulite facies metapelites (khondalites) of Kerala in southern India with a view to characterize the textural varieties and their genesis through the application of laser Raman spectroscopy and carbon isotopes. We trace the increasing intensity of metamorphism from the Raman spectra of the different graphite types. The δ13C values of the graphite show two distinct origins; the relatively lighter values in the range of −17.5‰ to −20.7‰ represent a mixture of biogenic and magmatic carbon, whereas the heavier isotopes in the range of −11.7‰ to −13.8‰ are suggested to present graphite precipitation from CO2-rich fluids from sub-crustal magmatic sources. Our study provides insights on the spectral properties of graphite in relation to the intensity of metamorphism and also reveals both biogenic and abiogenic sources of carbon.
A Petrological and Fluid Inclusion Study of Calc-Silicate–charnockite Associations from Southern Kerala, India: Implications for CO2 Influx

Abstract:Recent discovery of wollastonite-bearing calc-silicate assemblages adjacent to gneiss–charnockite horizons in the supracrustal terrain of the Kerala Khondalite Belt, southern India, provides an opportunity to evaluate the carbonic fluid infiltration model proposed for charnockite formation. Petrological and fluid inclusion studies across these horizons in three representative localities are presented in this study. The calc-silicate assemblages define peak metamorphic conditions of ∼800°C at 5 kbar and define a low aCO2. Adjacent charnockite assemblages developed through dehydration involving the breakdown of garnet, biotite and quartz to produce orthopyroxene under low aH2O conditions. Retrograde reactions preserved in the calc-silicate rocks, such as scapolite–quartz symplectites, and the partial breakdown of wollastonite previously has been attributed to a near isothermal decompression during which infiltration of CO2-rich fluids occurred. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the earliest generation of fluids preserved in the calc-silicate assemblages are aqueous (with salinity ∼8 wt% NaCl equivalent), consistent with mineral phase equilibria defining low aCO2. The estimation of NaCl content in brines coexisting with scapolite, based on the Cl content of the scapolite, indicates the presence of up to 20 wt % NaCl during the formation of scapolite consistent with the saline primary fluid inclusions. Primary carbonic inclusions occur within the retrogressed calcite+quartz assemblage after wollastonite, and are considered to represent the post-peak metamorphic carbonic fluid infiltration event, synchronous with the development of charnockites in the adjacent gneisses. These inclusions have identical characteristics to those in the charnockites. We envisage that the Kerala Khondalite Belt fluid regime was largely internally buffered during the prograde path, and that CO2 infiltration post-dated peak metamorphism. Influx of CO2 was mostly structurally controlled, and occurred along a near-isothermal uplift path. Graphite-bearing pegmatitic dykes with abundant CO2-rich inclusions in these localities attest to the transfer of carbonic fluids through magmatic conduits.
Resetting of Mg isotopes between calcite and dolomite during burial metamorphism: Outlook of Mg isotopes as geothermometer and seawater proxy

Abstract:Magnesium isotopes are an emerging tool to study the geological processes recorded in carbonates. Calcite, due to its ubiquitous occurrence and the large Mg isotope fractionation associated with the mineral, has attracted great interests in applications of Mg isotope geochemistry. However, the fidelity of Mg isotopes in geological records of carbonate minerals (e.g., calcite and dolomite) against burial metamorphism remains poorly constrained. Here we report our investigation on the Mg isotope systematics of a dolomitized Middle Triassic Geshan carbonate section in eastern China. Magnesium isotope analysis was complemented by analyses of Sr-C-O isotopic compositions, major and trace element concentrations, and petrographic and mineralogical features. Multiple lines of evidence consistently indicated that post-depositional diagenesis of carbonate minerals occurred to the carbonate rocks. Magnesium isotope compositions of the carbonate rocks closely follow a mixing trend between a high δ26Mg dolomite end member and a low δ26Mg calcite end member, irrespective of sample positions in the section and calcite/dolomite ratio in the samples. By fitting the measured Mg isotope data using a two-end member mixing model, an inter-mineral Δ26Mgdolomite-calcite fractionation of 0.72‰ was obtained. Based on the experimentally derived Mg isotope fractionation factors for dolomite and calcite, a temperature of 150–190°C was calculated to correspond to the 0.72‰ Δ26Mgdolomite-calcite fractionation. Such temperature range matches with the burial-thermal history of the local strata, making a successful case of Mg isotope geothermometry. Our results indicate that both calcite and dolomite had been re-equilibrated during burial metamorphism, and based on isotope mass balance of Mg, the system was buffered by dolomite in the section. Therefore, burial metamorphism may reset Mg isotope signature of calcite, and Mg isotope compositions in calcite should be dealt with caution in studies of carbonate rocks with thermal history. By contrast, Mg isotopes of dolomite are less prone to post-depositional resetting due to a number of properties including high Mg abundance and high thermodynamic stability, and Mg isotopes in dolomite may be a more robust recorder for original carbonate precipitates.
Effectiveness of Ti-in-amphibole thermometry and performance of different thermometers across lower continental crust up to UHT metamorphism

Abstract:Metabasites are important constituents of deep crustal sections and are the favored rock type for studying lower crustal amphibolite to granulite transitions. However, metapelites may develop a larger number of temperature-sensitive mineral assemblages and are particular useful when extreme ultrahigh temperature (UHT) conditions are envisaged. A recent calibration of the Ti-in-amphibole thermometer by Liao et al. (2021) was supposed to make thermometry on metabasites quick and easy to apply. However, their calibration is based on experiments which were not originally designed to investigate in detail the temperature dependence of Ti in amphibole. In addition, a possible effect of a TiO2 and/or pressure on the Ti content of amphibole was not fully taken into account. This resulted in a calibration uncertainty of ± 70 °C (2σ), much higher than that of other single-mineral thermometers. In this study we firstly test the newly calibrated Ti-in-amphibole thermometer across the mid to lower crustal section of the Ivrea–Verbano Zone (IVZ; NW Italy) and compare the performance of different thermometric techniques across the sequence. Ti-in-amphibole thermometry records increasing peak temperatures from amphibolite (600–700 °C), transition (750–800 °C) and granulite (850–950 °C) zones. Titanium content of amphibole may be modified by retrograde fluid influx returning temperatures c. 200–300 °C lower than in non-altered domains. The comparison reveals that Zr-in-rutile thermometer in pelitic granulites seems to be more prone to post-peak resetting than the Ti-in-amphibole thermometry in nearby mafic rocks. This behavior is also confirmed by amphibole analyses from other UHT localities, where the performance of Ti-in-amphibole thermometry is comparable with that of Al-in-orthopyroxene in pelitic granulites. However, Ti-in-amphibole temperatures are underestimated in rutile-bearing samples and this limitation is not solely restricted to rocks containing high H 2 O contents as previously thought. Derived constraints on the diffusivity of Ti through amphibole demonstrate the robustness of the Ti-in-amphibole thermometer to later thermal disturbances. However, ad-hoc experiments are still necessary to improve the accuracy and precision of calibration and to extend its applicability. This advance will make mafic granulites routine targets for studies devoted to understanding the regional extent of UHT metamorphism.

A new experimental monazite-xenotime thermometer: Application to metamorphic environments

Abstract:Monazite and xenotime are common metamorphic phases that may be reliably U/Th-Pb dated to obtain absolute ages. The utility of these minerals is significantly enhanced if a crystallization thermometer can be developed and applied to better establish the temperature-time (T-t) paths of crustal terranes. Here we report experiments in which we have modeled the T-dependent Rare Earth element (REE) cationic exchange between coexisting monazite and xenotime to derive a new thermometer. We present a thermometer in which phosphates were co-crystallized from 1150 °C to 850 °C at 1 GPa in a Y-REE-P 2 O 5 NaCl-H 2 O system, with oxygen fugacity buffered at the Ni-NiO equilibrium. The composition of the phosphates was quantified using a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS). Results reveal strong correlations between log10∏XXntLREE×XMztY∏XMztLREE×XMztY (at. %) and 10 4 /T(K) and our preferred calibration is: log∏XXntLREE×XMztY∏XMztLREE×XMztY=−6714±2264TK−0.79±1.76 where LREE = La, Ce and Pr, α = activity of a cation in a phase, and ∏αMzt/XntY/REE refers to the product of activities of Y and/or REEs in a phosphate phase. The errors are 2 s.e. The greatest strength of this thermometer is its versatility. One can obtain derivative thermometers based on select elements rather than the entire suite of REEs. We showcase our thermometer's adaptability by applying it to two studies that have published REE data on monazite and xenotime from some quartzo-feldspathic psammites and garnet-bearing pelites that experienced amphibolite facies metamorphism from the Naver nappe in the Northern Highlands Terrane, Scotland. The main calibration shown above, as well as four derivative single-element thermometers (Y, La, Ce and Pr) were applied to the first study. Upon applying these thermometers, we find that the calculated metamorphic Ts agree well with the regional metamorphic facies. Thus, this versatile thermometer can be used in geologic environments where monazite and xenotime co-crystallized.

The Calcite-Dolomite Solvus Temperature and T-X(CO2) Evolution in High-Grade Impure Marble from Thongmön Area, Central Himalaya: Implications for Carbon Cycling in Orogenic Belts

Abstract:Impure dolomitic marble from the Great Himalayan Sequences (GHS) in Thongmön area, central Himalaya, is first systematically reported here concerning its petrographic features, textural relations, and fluid evolution. The Thongmön impure marble is characterized by the assemblage of calcite + dolomite + forsterite + spinel + phlogopite + clinohumite ± diopside ± retrograde serpentine. Three groups of calcite and dolomite occurring both as inclusions and in the matrix were identified: group I is represented by relatively magnesium-rich calcite (Cal) (CalI:XMg = 0.10–0.15) and almost pure dolomite (Dol) (DolI:XMg = 0.47–0.48), corresponding to the Cal-Dol solvus temperatures of 707–781 °C; group II is characterized by vermicular dolomite exsolutions (DolII:XMg = 0.45–0.46) in Mg-rich calcite and Mg-poor calcite (CalII:XMg = 0.05–0.08) adjacent to DolII, and the recorded solvus temperatures are 548–625 °C; group III is represented by nearly pure calcite (CalIII:XMg = 0.003–0.02) and Ca-rich dolomite in the matrix (DolIII:XMg = 0.33–0.44). Isobaric T-X(CO2) pseudosection at a peak pressure of 15 kbar in the system K2O-CaO-MgO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-H2O-CO2 suggests that the peak fluid composition of the Thongmön forsterite marble is restricted to X(CO2) < 0.04 at T > 780 °C due to a potential infiltration event of H2O-rich fluid. Alternatively, the forsterite marble is a retrograde product subordinated to the GHS exhumation process, and its fluid composition is relatively CO2-rich (0.6 < X(CO2) < 0.8 at 5 kbar, 750 °C) at a nearly isothermal decompression stage. In either case, we suggest that the carbon flux contributed by metacarbonate rocks in an orogen setting to the global carbon cycling must be considered.
A Unified Clumped Isotope Thermometer Calibration (0.5–1,100°C) Using Carbonate‐Based Standardization

Abstract:The potential for carbonate clumped isotope thermometry to independently constrain both the formation temperature of carbonate minerals and fluid oxygen isotope composition allows insight into long‐standing questions in the Earth sciences, but remaining discrepancies between calibration schemes hamper interpretation of temperature measurements. To address discrepancies between calibrations, we designed and analyzed a sample suite (41 total samples) with broad applicability across the geosciences, with an exceptionally wide range of formation temperatures, precipitation methods, and mineralogies. We see no statistically significant offset between sample types, although the comparison of calcite and dolomite remains inconclusive. When data are reduced identically, the regression defined by this study is nearly identical to that defined by four previous calibration studies that used carbonate‐based standardization; we combine these data to present a composite carbonate‐standardized regression equation. Agreement across a wide range of temperature and sample types demonstrates a unified, broadly applicable clumped isotope thermometer calibration. Carbonate clumped isotope thermometry is a geochemical tool used to determine the formation temperature of carbonate minerals. In contrast to previous carbonate thermometers, clumped isotope thermometry requires no assumptions about the isotopic composition of the fluid from which the carbonate precipitated. By measuring the clumped isotope composition (Δ47) of carbonate minerals with a known formation temperature, we can construct an empirical calibration for the clumped isotope thermometer that is necessary to convert from a Δ47 value to formation temperature. Many previous studies have created Δ47 temperature calibrations, but differences between calibrations have led to large uncertainty in final Δ47 temperatures. This study measures a large number of samples that span a wide range of temperatures (0.5–1,100°C) and include many different types of carbonates. These data show that a single calibration equation can describe many sample types and that when data are carefully standardized to a common set of carbonate materials, calibrations performed at different laboratories agree almost identically. We combine these data to present a carbonate clumped isotope thermometer calibration with broad applicability across the geosciences. Abstract:The quarry at Kottavattom in the Trivandrum Block of southern India contains spectacular examples of fluid-assisted alteration of high-grade metamorphic rocks. Garnet-biotite gneiss has undergone a change in mineral assemblage to form submetre scale orthopyroxene-bearing patches, later retrogressed to form an amphibole-bearing lithology. These patches, often referred to as arrested or incipient charnockite, crosscut the original metamorphic foliation and are typically attributed to passage of a low aH2O fluid through the rock. Whilst this conversion is recognised as a late stage process, little detailed chronological work exists to link it temporally to metamorphism in the region. Zircon and monazite analysed from Kottavattom not only record metamorphism in the Trivandrum Block but also show internal, lobate textures crosscutting the original zoning, consistent with fluid-aided coupled dissolution-reprecipitation during formation of the orthopyroxene-bearing patches. High-grade metamorphism at the quarry occurred between the formation of metamorphic monazite at ~585 Ma and the growth of metamorphic zircon at ~523 Ma. The fluid-assisted alteration of the garnet-biotite gneiss is poorly recorded by altered zircon with only minimal resetting of the U–Pb system, whereas monazite has in some cases undergone complete U–Pb resetting and records an age for fluid infiltration at ~495 Ma. The fluid event therefore places the formation of the altered patches at least 25 Myr after the zircon crystallisation in the garnet-biotite gneiss. The most likely fluid composition causing the modification and U–Pb resetting of zircon and monazite is locally derived hypersaline brine.
Exploring Hindered Decarbonation in Contact Metamorphism: A Glimpse into Marble Aureoles in Southern Tibet

Abstract:Fluid-driven contact metamorphism in the Gangdese Arc, resulting from Late Cretaceous intrusions, led to a diverse range of aureoles in carbonate sequences in southern Tibet. These include extensive carbon loss in calcsilicate rocks with minor calcite remnants and minimal carbon loss in predominantly pure marble formations. Many studies connecting contact metamorphism and decarbonation flux focus on metacarbonate aureoles comprising calc-silicate assemblages, while marble formations represent a less prominent endmember. To investigate the factors determining decarbonation extent, we analyzed the thermobarometric, geochemical, and isotopic signatures of two representative marble aureoles in southern Tibet. Our findings suggest that isobarically exsolved magmatic fluid from a neighboring similar to 64 Ma granodiorite pluton led to limited fluid-rock interaction in the marble aureole. Based on the petrologic observations, we present a conceptual model to elucidate this process. The heating and fluid infiltration were brief, likely due to short-lived intrusion events. Consequently, a thin ductile layer was formed adjacent to the pluton, while the majority of the country rock remained brittle. The lithostatic fluid in the ductile layer likely escaped through structurally weak zones, creating veins along the boundary between the pluton and marble. The fluids traversed the brittle-ductile transition experienced a sudden pressure drop from lithostatic in the ductile rock to hydrostatic in the brittle regime. The boiling fluid escaped by brecciating the brittle country rock and resulted in brecciation and stockwork of veins. In both cases, most fluid escaped through pathways, preventing infiltration into the country rock and decarbonation reactions. In contrast, a longer-lived heat source would have produced more extensive ductile country rocks, allowing for widespread fluid infiltration and calc-silicate formation. Thus, the thermal history of the intrusion and the rheology of the country rock significantly influence the extent of decarbonation in contact aureoles.
Subaqueous carbonate speleothems as paleotemperature archives – clumped isotope thermometry and stable isotope compositions of inclusion-hosted water

Abstract:Clumped isotope measurements of carbonates and stable isotope analyses of water trapped in fluid inclusions are both promising techniques to determine carbonate formation temperatures. Cave-hosted carbonate deposits (speleothems) are excellent targets for such studies, but kinetic fractionations and diagenetic influences frequently deteriorate the temperature data obtained from these methods. However, subaqueous carbonate deposits may provide reliable data, as kinetic fractionations are less significant in underwater environments. In this study, subaqueous speleothems, whose formation temperatures were directly measured in the water, were investigated. Additionally, temperatures calculated from the oxygen isotope fractionations between calcite and fluid inclusion-hosted water were compared with clumped isotope temperatures obtained for subaqueous carbonate formations in cave-hosted lakes. The clumped isotope temperatures fit the measured and calculated fluid inclusion temperatures within the analytical precisions. Carbonate deposits formed at elevated temperatures (~50°C or above) may undergo post-formational calcite-water oxygen isotope exchange, altering the composition of the inclusion-hosted water. In contrast, subaqueous speleothems formed at about 20-25°C appear to preserve the primary isotopic compositions. Our study shows that subaqueous carbonate speleothems are useful targets for clumped isotope and inclusion water analyses, making them valuable paleotemperature archives.

Abstract:Abstract Thermometry of high-grade metamorphic rocks is difficult due to fast cationic diffusion during slow cooling, but the titanium content of calcium amphibole (Ti-Amp) can retrieve amphibole-forming temperature as high as ~1000 °C. Based on pseudosection modeling and past research survey, we find that Ti-Amp is controlled by temperature under the conditions of oxygen fugacity <2 log units above the Ni-NiO oxygen buffer (ΔNNO+2), in subalkaline systems, and with the presence of Ti-phases (rutile, ilmenite, or titanite). We apply available experimental data to calibrate a new Ti-Amp thermometer for such conditions: T∘C=24001.52−logTiAmp−273$$ \begin{equation} T\left({ }^{\circ} \mathrm{C}\right)=\frac{2400}{1.52-\log \mathrm{Ti}^{\mathrm{A} \mathrm{m} \mathrm{p}}}-273 \end{equation}$$ where T is temperature and log TiAmp is the Ti content of amphibole in atom per formula unit (apfu) expressed in the logarithm to base 10. The standard error of the calibration experiments is ±35 °C. This thermometer can be applied only if the aforementioned conditions are fulfilled. Besides, caution should be taken when applying the thermometer to rocks under subsolidus water-unsaturated conditions, which can be observed as non-equilibrium textures or low bulk-rock water content (<1–1.5 wt%). The results of this thermometer may be underestimated if applied to rocks that are equilibrated above 850 °C and contain rutile and a significant amount of water (>3.5–4 wt%). The new thermometer can be successfully applied to amphibole-bearing natural igneous and metamorphic rocks. In addition, we propose the Si vs. Ti in amphibole diagram that roughly demarcates the boundaries among the high amphibolite, high-temperature granulite, and ultrahigh-temperature granulite facies. Although pseudosection modeling provides details of the P-T evolution of studied rocks, the Ti-Amp thermometer is quick and easy to apply. However, further research is needed to improve our knowledge of the behavior and stability of amphibole and to improve the accuracy of both pseudosection modeling and conventional thermometry.
Fluid Characteristics of High- to Ultrahigh-Temperature Metamorphism in Southern India: A Quantitative Raman Spectroscopic Study

Abstract:We report the first quantitative compositional data on fluid inclusions in Late Neoproterozoic to Cambrian ultrahigh-temperature (UHT) granulites from major crustal blocks and shear zones in southern India. Fluid inclusions in various high-grade minerals such as garnet, orthopyroxene, plagioclase, cordierite, and quartz from these rocks were studied in terms of petrography, microthermometry and laser Raman spectroscopy. Measured melting temperatures of the inclusions indicate that the trapped fluid phase is dominantly carbonic. Raman analyses confirmed a CO2-rich composition with only minor dilutants such as N2 (≤5.0mol%), H2O (≤0.50mol%), and CH4 (≤0.47mol%). The range of most CO2 isochores computed from density measurements in fluid inclusions from the UHT granulites pass below the peak pressure–temperature conditions of metamorphism indicating considerable resetting of fluid densities during decompression. In contrast, garnetiferous granulites from the Salem area along the Palghat-Cauvery Shear Zone System, which underwent high-pressure prograde metamorphism, contain very high-density syn-metamorphic pure CO2 inclusions. Such dense carbonic fluid inclusions in garnet and plagioclase coexist with carbonate minerals (calcite or dolomite), indicating probable derivation from deep-seated primary magmatic sources. Although models on the origin of CO2 are debatable, the ubiquitous association of carbonic fluids in the UHT mineral assemblages is in favour of large-scale infiltration of CO2-rich fluids during extreme crustal metamorphism associated with collisional orogeny and subsequent extensional collapse at the final stage of amalgamation of the Gondwana supercontinent.

Abstract:The carbonate clumped isotope (Δ47) thermometer has been widely used for paleoclimatic and paleo‐elevation reconstructions in sedimentary basins. Its reliable use requires that carbonates are free from later diagenetic alteration and retain their depositional Δ47 compositions, which is not always the case during the burial history of a basin. Therefore, identifying the alteration mechanisms that occurred during burial is essential for the correct interpretation of Δ47 signatures. In this study, we used the Δ47 thermometer to investigate possible carbonate alteration during burial of the Fenghuoshan Group (FHSG) in the Hoh Xil Basin, northern Tibetan Plateau, China. The Δ47 temperatures [T(Δ47)] of 30 carbonate samples through the ∼4.5 km thickness of the FHSG range from 51 to 132°C and exceed the surface temperature, implying the effects of thermal alteration on FHSG carbonates. The T(Δ47) values combined with the water‐rock exchange model, indicating that the alteration occurred under closed burial conditions at low water:rock ratios. The solid‐state reordering model fails to predict the Δ47 values, even with a modified time‐temperature history. In contrast, most measured Δ47 values are in agreement with predictions from recrystallization models. Therefore, the proposed alteration scenario is that FHSG carbonates underwent progressive microscale recrystallization during deep burial and subsequent exhumation, during which process recrystallized carbonate equilibrated with ambient burial temperature and therefore modified Δ47 values. This study highlights the potential of Δ47 thermometry and related models for evaluating the burial history and diagenesis of carbonates in sedimentary basins.
